(00:15):
And welcome to Backstage past. Iam Austin James. Thank you so much
for listening in twenty twenty three, and we are looking forward to being together
in twenty twenty four with lots ofgreat events, lots of concerts, lots
of guests. It's going to bea fantastic here, I do believe for
twenty twenty four. I also wantto give a shout out to a lot
of veterans who are listening right nowoverseas. We have a lot of listeners

(00:40):
overseas, probably at some military basesout there, So thank you so much.
Thank you for your service, andwe are looking forward to for you
to come back and be at homeright here. So let's talk about some
different things like New Year's Eve.It's like Your's Eve is not one of
my favorite holidays. I love Thanksgiving. I love the week of Thanksgiving,

(01:06):
the days leading up to that Thursday, going to my mother's house, opening
the door, and just the aromaof the food is just amazing. I
love Thanksgiving week because it kicks offthe official kickoff to Christmas season, and
everybody's in a good mood. Youcan see them putting up decorations and driving
around with the tree in the backof the truck and that kind of stuff

(01:29):
and Christmas parties. It's all good. I like it. Christmas Eve is
one of my favorite nights. Ilove it. Love going to church,
then driving around looking at Christmas lights. It's a good tradition. But Christmas
Day comes around and you get togetherwith family and friends. It's all right.
You know, you might be watchingTV a little bit, and you
know they're talking in the kitchen andwalking around the back patio or whatever,

(01:51):
and then you eat and then it'slike three o'clock comes around, four o'clock,
Okay, time to go home. And then but then New Year's Eve.
Ugh. I used to love NewYear's Eve when I was a kid
because we'd always stop and purchase fireworksand pop those in the backyard or in
the street or something like that. But now you know with new city ordinances

(02:15):
about not popping fireworks in the neighborhoods, And I understand that, I really
do, because you could disturb somepeople who might not be feeling well.
They may be ill, they maybe bed rest or something like that.
So I understand that maybe going outto an empty field or something like that
and popping fireworks, but then there'sa danger if the field is really really

(02:37):
dry and you're popping fireworks, itcould set fire to the field. So
that's another situation. One of themain reasons why I don't like New Year's
Eve. And I've I've said thisbefore and I'm not trying to harp on
or anything like that, but myfather passed away on New Year's Eve of
two thousand and four. We wereat a hospital. My mother was there,

(02:58):
my cousin was there with me withus, and I think a couple
of other people. They may havegone in and out of the ICU waiting
room or I should yeah, Iguess waiting room, lounge, whatever you
want to call it. And thenapproximately about eleven oh three pm, I
was watching the ball drop in NewYork City on TV, and then the

(03:21):
doctor and a couple of nurses camein and told us that his blood pressure
went low, and they gave himall the best medications that they had and
did everything that they could, butthey couldn't revive him. So that was
obviously a horrible time for my motherand I. I don't have brothers and

(03:42):
sisters, so it's just me.I mean, after I was born and
with a few years they said, okay, I think we're good with just
him. But anyway, it wasjust a horrible night and it was tremendously
foggy. I remember driving back fromthe hospital. I was following my mother
and my aunt and I was behindthem very very closely, and she's originally

(04:09):
from Donalsonville. My mother so wentback to her house. My aunt left,
and my mother got ready for bed, and I was just resting there.
I guess, just kind of deliriousas to what happened that night.
And I can't remember if a friendof mine contacted me and asked how my

(04:31):
father was doing, or maybe Icontacted her, but I told her that
he had passed, and I guessthis was about one point thirty in the
morning. She said, give medirections to your house. And I said,
are you sure you want to dothis? And she said yes.
I said, all right, andshe drove from Walker, Louisiana to my

(04:53):
mother's house in Donaldsonville, which isprobably a good night maybe an hour and
a half hour and forty five minutes, if you really I want to calculate
it out, and especially in thatfog, I'm telling you it was one
of the foggiest early mornings I've everseen. I mean, you really couldn't
see five feet in front of you. But my friend drove from Walker.

(05:13):
Her name is Christy. She droveall the way from Walker to my mother's
house in Donaldsonville and came there toconsole me. My mother was sleeping and
she could sleep through anything, butshe drove over and just to be there
to console me. I want tosay thank you to Christy for that.
She's a part of my life,a very good friend. I know her

(05:38):
daughter real well, her husband andall that, and I just wanted to
say thank you to Christy. Thiswas two thousand and four New Year's Eve
of two thousand and four. It'salmost twenty years ago. I can't believe
that. Just cannot believe it.But anyway, that's one of the reasons
why I hate New Year's Eve.Plus quote unquote, it's the end of
the Christmas season into the holiday season. People are starting to go back to

(06:01):
work and get back into a regularroutine. And I just like the holiday
season where people are starting to takeoff of work and you know they're not
coming to the office, and youknow you're there by yourself and it's kind
of cool, you know, really, and it's it's past, but I

(06:23):
will say you could always look forwardto the next Christmas season. And that's
what I'm going to do. I'mgoing to try to do something every month
to get ready for the Christmas season, be it, I don't know,
maybe putting out my spotlights a littleearlier, maybe running extension cords in the

(06:45):
in the flower beds a little earlier. Maybe taking a look at Christmas in
July sales or something like that. But I will say this, if you
are thinking about Christmas shopping, doit in August our septem because I mean,
it comes upon you like that. But anyway, I didn't want to

(07:05):
bring you down with that story.I just want to let you know why
I hate New Year's Eve for theobvious reason, but many other reasons.
You know, it's like the endof the holiday season and blah blah blah.
But there is a great Bowl game. They have a whole bunch of
great Bowl games on TV. Sothat's kind of cool too. And spring

(07:26):
would be right around the corner.I love spring. I love spring,
and I love fall. Don't carefor winter, I don't care for summer,
fall, and Spring I dig Iwant to wish you and your family
a very happy new Year. Ihope your Christmas and holidays were very good
and blessed, and I certainly hopethat we make it a safe one in
twenty twenty four. I am AustinJames. Thank you for listening to Backstage
