Live from three months three to experiencein fabulous downtown Las Vegas. It's the
podcast that celebrates our city. Thisis Living Las Vegas and Monday. It's
a day that parents have looked forwardto for the past couple of months.
Maybe it's the week, the weekof country in the code. What what
do you think I was going totalk about? Okay, people stay say

(00:23):
about back to school? Yeah, yeah, I was talking about I thought
we were doing a podcast about backto school. And then you did that
old cliche about parents are so happythe kids are going back. I guess
my question is is that true? That's still true? Parents are real excited
the kids go back. I don'tknow. I guess it depends. Yeah,
depends. That's not the sense forsomeone like me, a single parent

(00:44):
who has to, you know, get home now earlier to make sure I
get him at the bus stop. It's a little bit of a stressful time
for me. For parents who arestay at home moms, not that that
isn't a job. Your kids areyounger versus Tony's kids. Oh true,
but I mean a twelve year old. But he And this is not a
jab at you or working parents atall, but the stay at home moms

(01:04):
or or dads for that matter, now have some time back during the day
where for the last couple of monthsthey've had to worry about finding things for
the kids to do, making surethey get some lunch. Okay, And
that is not a jab at anywayat anybody whom the hard. Yeah,
because a lot of extra things youhave to do. So for some it's
a stressful time. For some it'san exciting time. I guess it depends

(01:26):
on how you look at. Forus, it just puts a crimp on
the availability for three day weekends likethe getaway, like getting the trailer and
you know, uh and do acamping trip, you know, somewhere for
three day. It just kind ofit cuts into my time that I enjoy
with my kids because they've got togo to school. And we do go
back to school very early there.Yeah, although I remember going back to
school when I was a kid wasafter Labor Day. That's when we were

(01:49):
going back to school. We'll stilldo that in Oregon, they still do.
My daughter, who goes to schoolin Northern California, went back this
Monday, thirty first of July.Guys. Yeah, she's three days into
school. Four days into school now, and so we're talking about CCSD.
The private schools don't all go backon Monday. I don't know what the
schedule is on They probably vary, right, I think they vary. Yeah,

(02:10):
it does seem early though, Imean we're still in the heat of
summer. Yeah. I feel badthat they don't get the full It felt
like we used to get a solidthree months, Like last week of June
we were out. We go backto what she said late Labor day.
Yeah, so I feel bad,But at the same time, get them
back to school. Let's let's getthem edgemycated. We still got a couple

(02:30):
of years to catch up on fromthe pandemic, which I don't know how
it affected your kids, but Ifeel like my kids missed out on some
learning. Yeah, socialized, Ican't. We're in a unique situation,
so I can't speak to you know. What I said about my kids going
back actually sort of makes me sad. That's a unique situation, right,
you know, And it also meansend of summer, And did we really

(02:51):
maximize the summer and get all thejuice out of it and really enjoy it.
And the answer is, I meanwe always wish we could have done
more, and that kind of thing. Right, it's the time kind of
slipped by, by the way,you will and we did a lot this
summer, you will always feel likeyou could have done more. Of course,
that's always going to be. Thekid is your daughter going back to
college. So I got a collegeaged kids. She's going back to Reno.

(03:12):
They don't go back for I don'tknow another month after this, like
it should be like yeah, regular, and then I have a son who's
going to go to CSN for afor a semester or two. Cool,
that's awesome. Um, what wewant to talk about some places if you're
needing some assistance. Look, weknow this can be an expensive time of
year. I was I wish Icould remember what the exact number was,
but I saw that the back toschool amount per family has risen like twenty

(03:37):
percent this year, and it's averagingto like three hundred four hundred dollars per
family per kid. Yeah, perfamily, So it's a lot, and
we know that this can be atough time, So we want to talk
about some places. It's mostly sneakers. Yeah, that's that's just Tony,
that's George's budget my last year,my son was like, I want these
two hundred dollars pair of sneakers.Yeah, no, I don't know,

(03:58):
Yes, I said yes. Andwhy did I need ziplock bags? Because
I've been seeing that on a lotof like back to school supply lists,
where they need ziplock bags so theycan take the candy to school and sell
it for a five markup and makethat paper for the entrepreneurs of the grade
d I used to totally do that. How much is a protractor these days?
There's no protractor Probably don't even usethose anymore. There's no protractors anymore.

(04:20):
Calculate They probably don't even use calculatorsanymore. There was a calculator on
the list. I went through thelist. Do you want me to go
through the loose Yeah? I thinkI want to know what kids are are
needing or what are what are teachersasking parents to supply their kids with.
Well, we've already had my son. Just for clarity, if you don't
know, my son is going intosixth grade. So he's going to be
going to the same school as mymiddle child, my daughter who's thirteen,

(04:43):
going into eighth grade. Okay,so they both go to school out in
Henderson. Um, they're excited togo to school together. Yeah, probably
not. Layla is going to belike, oh man, there's there's some
there's like a rivalry thing going onalready. So the way the school works
is you get chromebooks. They probablydidn't have that when I know they didn't
when I didn't have a chromo phonebookwasn't a thing when I went to Schoolcause
I'm old, I'm trying to pullup I'm trying to pull up the webs.

(05:08):
I just talked to somebody on thephone about this is a complete side
rail about being old. They're talkingabout eighties nostalgia and uh, I said,
oh, you should send out viewmasters. And she's in her twenties
and she said, oh, what'sa view master? Okay, but you
just say view master and I canfeel it in my hand. I can
feel the disc, Yes, youknow, I can smell the tony,

(05:30):
I can smell the paste. Idon't know what a view master? Sure
you do it. You're not thatyoung? Ice is that? I mean
you're up the age or he shouldknow what you've seen it. You just
don't know that. When we saythat, you don't know what we're talking
about. I didn't know. IfI saw it then I probably know you'd
remember it. And you're much youngerthan I am. So you know what

(05:51):
I missed that that cement glue paste, right, that it is something cement,
right, there's like and I usedto smell it. I got it.
I was a weird kid. Butfor glue stick. Yeah yeah,
oh yeah, they're still they stillhave to go to school with a glue
sticks. No, the first two. The first two are very twenty twenty

(06:14):
three chrome book and wired headphones anda mouse. First three. Then you
got the usual pencil pouch, highlighters, pencils, colored pencils, redpened two
pocket folders, glue sticks, viiralnotebooks on pocket pocket folders. Right,
it gets around, got it.Give you some California Love, divider's reading
book, pe uniforms, basic calculator, graph paper, regular paper. That's

(06:38):
basically it, right, Okay, okay, it was always weird. When
my son was in fifth grade andfourth grade, they required in to bring
like six boxes of Kleenex. Ohinteresting, and let the teacher cried a
lot. I don't know, uh, yeah, that's not a thing in
middle school, I guess. Butthere's a lot of random things. And
when I first moved here three yearsago, I did the whole go out

(06:59):
to every store and get it.And I did it the week before,
thinking that, oh it'll be fine. Yeah right, no pick through and
parents who are doing school shopping thisweek. No, if you go out
to let's say Walmart, you're gonnafind maybe half, maybe a third of
the items. The rest of themare sold out or picked through already,
and you can't find what you need. So you go to a Target,
or you go to another store, and next thing you know, you go
to three stores and you still havelike five random things you need. Yep.

(07:20):
And even though the short list likethat, it's not like a crazy
long list for sure. So whatI did a couple of years ago and
I'm now this is my tradition.Order it all on Prime. There's a
two day Prime Day in the middleof July. Get ahead of it.
The lists are usually posted by thenboom boom boom, boom boom, done
at your doorstep within forty eight hoursand you're done. Nice. It looks
so proud of yourself. I amvery tony. I was so stressed out

(07:44):
and I don't know if it wasa combination of waiting till the last minute,
being a prastinator, a single parent. But I was so stressed that
year because I wanted it because ofmy first year having the kids living in
Las Vegas with me, and Iwanted it to be perfect. And I
was so pissed that I couldn't goto a store and just get everything all
at once. Right, And maybeif you do in early July, you
can, but the week before isnot the move. Parents, if you're
doing it, you know what I'mtalking about. You still have time.

(08:07):
It's Thursdays, couple days. Yeah, I mean, if you order it
now, you can probably get it. And think about this, Most schools
don't start until another month from now, right, so it's not like Prime
is going to be sold out beinga nature of my companies. Think about
that. That's true. That's mypro tip for there for school supplies,
back to school shopping, No,No two hundred dollars sneakers. Good for
you for doing that, though.Well, it was his senior year last

(08:28):
year, and we wanted the guyto look the way he wanted to look
first. I mean, you dosome of this when I think for them,
you want to senior confidence, right, and that's a part of your
Your look is part of your confidence, so especially your senior year. Right,
do you remember what kind of shoesyou know? I don't. He's
still hassle, right, he's takingcare of them exactly, still good.

(08:48):
My son is growing so fast allof a sudden, so shoes. And
this is my favorite thing about mykids. I love my kids. There's
a lot of great qualities they have. But as far as uh sholo and
shoes, they're not a name brand. A group of kids love that.
They don't want it yet, No, I don't know. I don't.
I don't see them as being thosekinds of kids though, Like they're cool

(09:09):
with going to like Ross and likeMarshall's target, Like my thirteen year old
starting to develop look cool, she'sstarting to develop a sense of style,
right, So, but it's likea thrifty kind of a sight, like
should go to Goodwill and pick outand find what they're looking for. My
son order these shorts on Prime, order to get these shoes at Walmart.
I don't care. Like he's finewearing shacks to school, you know what

(09:30):
I mean? Not the three boxpumps or the air Jordan's or whatever,
the Henderson In middle school, they'renot wearing uniforms. No, No,
we have uniforms where my daughter goes, and it's a public school. Oh
wow really yeah wow. My oldestdaughter goes to a charter school in California,
always have and they've had uniforms andstill have very tight dress codes now
that she's a sophomore. But theydon't have uniforms in high school. But

(09:52):
I've loved the uniforms. Yeah,I said uniforms. It's probably more like
dress code. There's certain things youcan wear, you have to wear,
like collared shirt and certain kinds ofpants. They're very strict on what you
can and can't wear. Wow,I actually love that. And again at
public school it's Brent there in CCSDand Centennial. I don't know if I
love that. You're not allowing themto express themselves. Yeah, I mean

(10:16):
the expression gets sideways quickly in middleschool. So I think that's part of
the one. Because in high schoolthey don't have any kind of dress code,
right, there's certain things you can'tdo. But yeah, so it's
it's a middle school thing only,Okay, And I think it's also there
partly to save parents money because theclothes you get for this are less expensive

(10:37):
probably than you know, whatever elseyour kid's going to try and get to
get ready for middle school. Ithink yeah, and it creates less of
a distraction. And that's true especiallyup until high school. You know that
those are very important developmental years andyou don't want to do anything like we
had to do with the pandemic thatcould distract from edgumaication. So stop saying
it like that, because I'm notgonna start believing that's how we say it.

(11:00):
I have a way with word totalk to you after the show about
that. Yeah, we might haveto have a sidebark. I'm gonna get
learned it after this. Um mine. With the dress code, yes,
my middle school kid has lots ofexpressions of her own look and styles,
whether it's how she does her hairor the tennis shoes or whatever that she's
wearing her Okay, so the shoesare not a part of the dress code.

(11:22):
It's just pants in the top andthe top and you can wear the
hoodie, right, you can wearthe hoodie with the school logoing, okay,
which you won't need for a fewmonths. No, not so air
conditioned. Yesterday you were freezing inthis I was called yesterday, so you've
got to kind of prep for theair conditioning to be blowing. I would
think the schools have budgets. Iwent to the walkthrough this week with the
with the sun and he it wasit was quite warm in the school,

(11:43):
So I don't know if they havethe EC cranked up yet or be a
thing. Um, there are placesdoing discounted or free haircuts for back to
school time, because that's part gotto get them pictures on point Monday,
you know, Um, do youwant to go through some of these places
that are doing a school supplying backand backpack drives as well? Yeah,
a couple tomorrow and on Saturday. So tomorrow we'll start with Tomorrow Lutheran Social

(12:05):
Services of Nevada Headquarters. This isfrom nine am to noon. This is
actually cool. They're making like abig event out of it. They're gonna
have a dunk tank out there.I love those bounce houses, snacks,
door prizes, face painting, andthe kids who go will receive a free
backpack, school supplies and other educationalresources. So I think that's a cool

(12:26):
one to go to if you wantto have some fun and get hooked up
for the school year. If youaren't working tomorrow, it's a good time
nine to noon. You said,is there a criteria like, do you
have to is there a certain incomelevel you have to meet or anything?
Nothing that says right here, right, I think you can just pop on
by man and then on Saturday, this is happening at Skyview YMCA, located
at a thirty fifty East Centennial Parkway. This one's from one to five in

(12:48):
the afternoon. Free food, backpacks, and school supplies will be given out.
Wall supplies last, So just keepthat in mind too if you plan
on going out and maybe get thereearly. And then we have another that's
happening at the City of North LasVegas, the end of Summer back to
School Pool Party, dude. Sothat's happening on Saturday at the Silver Mas
Recreation Center twelve to three. Moreactivities, swimming of music with a live

(13:11):
DJ, and back to school backpackgiveaway. So there's just a lot of
stuff going on. Richard Harris LawFirm is throwing one on Saturday. M
Clark County Board of Commissioners is throwingone on Saturday, so and that another
dollar loan center that one had justpassed. What is the source of that?
Just so people can go and lookthat information up. I'm looking on
news three. Okay, news threedot com, News three LV dot com,

(13:33):
News three LV dot com. Yougot it. They have all that
info there. Wow. Tweet hangout real quick. Richard Harris Law from
twelve thousand backpacks full of supplies they'regiven out. Wow. Really twelve thousand,
that's insane. It's incredible what RichardHarris does every year. Yeah,
that's awesome, that's great. Goodfor them. I know, that's cool
that they're giving back. And there'sagain no income level requirements or anything that

(13:54):
you have to meet. No,doesn't say that. Here here providing free
haircuts. That that one's happening atthe Clark County Board of Commissioners like you
were saying, it's like licensed peopledoing the haircuts, right. No,
yeah, they got the county commissioner. I'll cut your kids there, wuz
right. I wanted a mohawk,I couldno, but there is definitely help

(14:16):
out there, and if I couldgive my two cents, man if I
was a parent, smoke Man unfortunatelyis not going to school this year,
but he does go good checkups, then he does, I gotta take them
today, But I would say goodWill. Man. Good Will has always
been my go to, whether it'sclothes or so cleaning supply, just anything,
man Like, I'd love going togood Will. You never know what
you're gonna find. And they've beenpromoting a lot lately on their social media

(14:37):
that you know, take hey, where your one stop shop for all your
back to school needs? And theyhave plenty of locations throughout the valley over
and thrift shopping seems to be back. I don't know if mack Lamore's sparked
out. Maybe my thirteen year oldswears my good Will I love it,
man. I remember I was wearingties before Avril Levine was wearing ties back
in the day, and I wouldgo to Goodwill pick up these ties.

(15:00):
At school, man, people arelike, oh, that's cool, and
then here comes Avril Levine, like, oh, you're copying Avril Levine.
So yeah, I know what it'slike. I remember what it's like being
a kid back in school. Man. Well, the dress code allows it.
A dress code allows it. Makesure you let your kids express themselves.
That is important. It's part ofthe development and you know, if
they go too far with it,their friends will tell them real and back

(15:20):
a little bit. No, though, I've learned within reason. I mean,
obviously there are certain dress code violationsthat can come into play, but
the mid drift, I remember,No, you cannot expose the mid drift.
I think that one's still going.Yeah, I believe that. Yeah,
no, that's still a thing. No spaghetti straps. But yeah,
if even if you're inside those boundaries, you still can get made fun of

(15:41):
and things from other kids. Andmy kids have learned before that if they
do something others can make fun of, they tend to adjust themselves quickly.
And I don't have to jump inas a parent. I told you not
to wear that goofy vin. Soyeah, either way, make sure you
get those photos, and we wantto see I'm sure with us, obviously

(16:02):
we'll be sensitive about reposting other people'skids, but I always think they're back
to school picks are cool. Someparents get creative with these. By the
way, I miss the laser backdrop. That's cool. Yeah, I had
one of those. She doesn't rememberthe view master. She does remember the
laser back I'm gonna look this up. Yeah, you're gonna look it up,

(16:22):
okay, and then I'm gonna belike, all right, I know
you're gonna be remembering what that isyet, because it's not just a bag.
You had it when you were fine. Yeah, yeah, I've had
this, Okay, I didn't knowwhat it's called. A view master looks
like a projector or screen or something, a projector Like they're like like a
kaleidoscope type kind of. Yeah. The technology really erased the need for those.
I mean, it's such an archaic. Let's look at seven only seven

(16:47):
photos. Yeah, I think thevirtual reality headset is a step is a
step forward? Yeah, a littletwenty steps. Yeah, no kidding,
Well, I have a great safeback to school. Are they doing free
lunches again this year? Oh?I need to find that out. Ever
since the pandemic, Ever since Imoved here, the kids have always had
free lunch and everybody gets it.My son still requires me to make a

(17:10):
lunch because the lunch lady said across thing to him one time, and
now he refuses to eat like heis going up. I didn't pack his
lunch one day last year he wenton hunger strike, did not eat line.
I'm like, dude, go getyour slice a pizza? What are
you doing? So? I don'tknow if that's the thing I haven't heard
otherwise, so I imagine that's stillin play. Um I think so.
Yeah, So I have a safeback to school. We'll be back next
