Speaker 1 (00:00):
From my Heart Radio. This is Scott Stevens. We are
excited for the Kroger Stampede Championship Rodeo going on this
weekend at the Salem Civic Center. It's something great to
do in the winter time. It's after the holidays, we're
a long way from spring. Well, this will be exciting
this weekend at the Salem Civic Center and to talk
to us about it, as the rodeo director himself, mister

(00:20):
Kevin DeBusk, thanks for joining us, sir.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Well, happy New Year to you and everybody else. I'll
tell you what I'm great. I'm excited to be back
up here again. You know, this has been going on
this year will be fifty seven times and I've been
a big part of at least the last eleven or twelve.
So it's exciting to be back here and siting for
some of the new things we've got going on.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Absolutely it is I've been able to go the last
several years and get to talk to you ahead of time.
And first of all, let me mention folks, tickets this
thing sells out. I mean there's not many things that
will fill up a civic center in January, but this
is definitely one of them, so you don't want to
wait around on getting your tickets.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Hey, you're right, this has been you know, especially since COVID,
it has been extremely popular, more so than even before.
And there's a reason that's been here this long. But tickets, definitely,
I would say get them in advance. And hey, you
know it's going to be a little cold, and they
said maybe a little snow. So what better way. Give
those tickets in advance. You don't have to stand in line,

(01:24):
you don't have to possibly be in the cold. You
can get indoors, and once they get in those doors,
it's not going to matter how cold it is. They're
not going to need a blanket. They're not going to
need a coat, They're just barely going to need the
edge of that seat.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Absolutely, and it's always fun to watch, and of course
the cowboys and cowgirls are going to be there, and
especially those bull riders.

Speaker 4 (01:45):
Man, it's been some amazing bull riding.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
To me, some of the bull riders under there, it's
just like watching those national bull riding competitions that you see.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
Over on ESPN. There's some really good bull riders coming out.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
For Absolutely, you're in, you're out. We have some amazing
bull riders. And what people don't realize is there are
a lot of great bull riders here in Virginia and
even in this Roanoke Valley area that come out. We've
seen some of them walk away with the end of
the show money and win the whole thing before. And

(02:21):
some of these cowboys and cowgirls that you're going to
see are going to be world champions. Some of them
are doing a final tune up to make to the
International finals next weekend out in Oklahoma City area. And
some of these guys actually compete on some of those
bull riting PBR and so forth you see on TV.
So you're getting the cream of the crop when you

(02:42):
look at these cowboys that are climbing on back of
these fifteen hundred to two thousand pound animals.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Man, I tell you, I get scared getting around those animals.
Sometimes Kevin has taken me near the cages before the
rodeo and for some reason, when I'm standing in front
of the cab, I don't know if it's my iHeart
Radio shirt that I'm wearing with a great big red
heart in the middle of it, but those bulls I
swear Kevin, I don't.

Speaker 4 (03:07):
Think they like me.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Well, I tell you what, you know, you get back
in that pan area. Uh. And it seems like these
bulls they see these broadcasters and you know, TV and radio,
and there's just something about them. I don't know what
it is. You know, it was hilarious watching you. Your
eyes got you know, as big as saucers the last time,
and your daughter was there and she was just like,

(03:31):
they're so cute.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Yeah, And I was like, yeah, they're cute, all right,
But that one was staring me down that year and
he was huge.

Speaker 4 (03:40):
And uh. I think it's kind of like bees. They
can sense fear.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Oh absolutely, And that's one of the things they're they're
good at sensing the way a person feels. I've got
people that walk in to our pens with our bulls,
and I've seen reporters do a live broadcast from in there.
I've seen others that they can sense that little bit
of fear and you know, they stay way on the

(04:06):
other side.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
Yeah, we're gonna we're gonna do that.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
We're gonna do some live video for Facebook and social
media there hopefully with the bulls if they're in place,
maybe about Thursday, we're gonna stop by and take a
look at everything going on. But it's not just the bulls.
We've also got that brock riding and barrel racing. I
love both of those events.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Oh absolutely. That's what's unique about our event that's been
coming in here year in year out, is we're a
full rodeo. You're getting bull riding, you're getting barrel racing,
you're getting breakaway roping. I mean, where can you go
see young ladies competing and possibly win an event in
as little as two seconds.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
Wow, that is amazing.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
A lot of great family fun and speaking of fun,
rodeo clown I mean, now you've got some of the
best through the years. You've got a great one lined
up for this year, I'm sure as well.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Absolutely, Mike Wentworth is returning. He's been a huge fan
favorite for the last couple of years. He's a nine
time Clown of the Year and he's nominated again for
the twenty four season for Cloud of the Year. He's
also been nominated as a top five clown Act of
the Year. So we've got an amazing award winning rodeo clown,

(05:21):
probably one of the best in the industry today. And
adding to that this year We've got a young man
eighteen year old actually autistic, mister Lucas Maynard. He's going
to be coming in. He's a trick wroper and whip
artist and we're going to bring him out there. He
was in twenty twenty four he was recognized as one

(05:42):
of the top specialty acts in the International Professional Rodeo Association.
So not only is it a clown, but our special
act is award winning as well.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
That is awesome and of course a great activity for
kids as well to try to get them started in
the rodeo world.

Speaker 4 (05:58):
Early. You got the mutton by planned up again this year.
We do.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
We've been very blessed over the years with boot Barn
coming on board to support the mutton busting and unfortunately
the gentleman who originally was with boot Barn and helped
partner with us, David Hughes, he lost his life due
to some lung issues this past year, so we're going
to kind of remember him doing this. But you know
this is this is a way that a lot of
the bull riders learn is by getting on back of

(06:23):
these sheep and coming out of the bucking shoots. And
we're going to take the first ten ages four to
six and under fifty pounds that fit our safety equipment.
Each night about intermission, they'll come out on the arena
floor and come out of the bucking shoots. We'll do
the registration forum on during the pre show there on
the arena floor. So you know, if you've got kids
in that category of four to six and underd fifty pounds,

(06:46):
I would say, you want to make sure you're there
when the door's open, because it doesn't take long to
fill those ten slots. Everybody wants to be part of
the mutton busting.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
No doubt about it. And of course you've got some
great sponsors. Gosh, Kroger's been sponsoring us as long as
I can remember, also Davis Heating and Air, and of
course Berglan Automotive. You've got good sponsors that bring the
rodeo to town.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
We do.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
We've got some amazing sponsors, you know, and we just
continue to see more and more come on board each year.
And I credit all of this to the community, because
there's no way we could do any of this without
a community that truly believes in us, a facility like
the Salem Civic Center that partners with us to make

(07:29):
sure everything we need and everything that the fan might
need is in place so that we can put on
the best show possible.

Speaker 4 (07:36):
Folks, you need to plan to come out this weekend.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
It's Friday seven thirty, Saturday seven thirty, Sunday at two thirty,
or excuse me, Sunday at two.

Speaker 4 (07:45):
But you do not.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
Want to wait and get your tickets there, you might
get disappointed because we expect them all to sell out,
So go by the Salem Civic Center box office, or
you can go to the link on the website through
Ticketmaster at Salem Civic Center. Kevin DeBusk, the rodeo director
for the twenty twenty five Stampede Championship Rodeo this weekend
at the Salem Civic Center, thank you for your time

(08:09):
and we look.

Speaker 4 (08:09):
Forward to seeing you hey.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Thank you folks so much. We appreciate seeing you guys
every year, and we look forward to seeing you later
this week as well.
