Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to community viewpoints and Shannie feeling blessed and highly favored.
On this Sunday morning, I have the privilege to speak
to the one and only Jacoby Pittman. So many accolades
behind her name, but the woman that empowers us in
the city and is a staple in the city for
(00:21):
just taking care of the city. So today, good morning, Jacoby,
how are you goom born?
Speaker 2 (00:27):
And I am wonderful? How about you?
Speaker 1 (00:30):
You know I'm steady because everything is happening and the
world is in crisis, and one thing I know every
year is that Jacoby is going to feed the city.
Jacoby is going to make sure people have a December
to remember, and Jacoby is going to have her hands
in everything so that we could uplift our community. So
(00:52):
before we get into the events that are coming up,
for those that don't know you, and I don't know
who those people are, says iHeartRadio, so it's global, just
introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about Jacobe Pittman.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Hello everyone, good morning. It is indeed and honor to
be with you this morning along with my friend Shane,
because we have been at the Hill for how many
years now, Shanie.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Lots we won't tell lots lots.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Of years again. My name is Jacoby Pittman. I'm the
CEO of the Clara White Mission and I have been
there for thirty five years, carrying on the legacy of
Ertha and Clara White, who is a mother and daughter
team who was excited about helping people in the community.
(01:42):
And it started right where they were. You know, it
wasn't any type of cookie cutter program, but people came
to the storehouse to all, which is the Clara White Mission,
which is located at six thirteen wes Ashley Street, who
gives people a second team answered life. And so you know,
for me, Shani, I have always been the voice of
(02:06):
many people. Even growing up in high school. Someone to
ask me a question the other day and say, have
you always been for the people? Always fighting for the people?
And you know, I said, you know, ever since I
can I could remember, I've always been the person that
(02:27):
speaks up for the underdogs, you know, and I've never
been afraid to do that because people need to be
at the table, sitting at the table because there if
they're not, they're on the menu. Right. So all my life,
you know, I have been doing that. And you know,
I come from a family that believes in kicking up
(02:52):
for people, you know, and so that's my background. That's
where I come from. I know my purpose and God
has allowed me to live purpose through people and through
volunteers to help me get to the finish line. So
for me, it's just continuing to carry on the legacy
(03:14):
of Ertha and Clara White who started the organization, and
so you know, I've been there for thirty four years.
The organization is one hundred and twenty two years old,
providing you know, meals for the homeless, servant veterans, culinary
program to help people get their life back, and then
(03:37):
the workforce. And our new program is the Earth's Farm
and Market on Montcree. We have a ten and a
half acre farm where we provide and grow fresh produce
for our neighbors that live in close proximity. And then
it's also a place of destination for individuals to come.
(04:00):
All the money Shanny that we bring for our organization
goes directly back and to the program that we.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Have community Shawnee speaking to Jacoby Pittman, she is a
light for those that may be experiencing some dark times
Jacoby Pittman has been a pillar of strength for those
that are looking for a light. She's also one of
the best council women that I have seen serve in
(04:30):
this community. Every weekend, most every day.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
She's live.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
She is boots on the ground, as I would see it,
just pouring into her community with love and service. Today
we're here to talk about she's continuing that service. iHeart
V one on one point five ninety three point three,
the beat, the masses continue, a divine nine, the Eastern
(04:56):
Stars and Masons. We all come together and we all
we will join her with one of the many events
that she does, which is one of the events we're
talking about, Feed the City. Jacobe, you talk to us
about feed the City. We're going on twenty seven years.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Can you believe that twenty seven whole years.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
When a thing is good, it lasts forever.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
It lasts forever. Well, I want to say, first of all,
thank you and to the Station for continuing to support
the efforts of the Clare White Mission. And one of
the first events that we did and with the Station
was see the City in the Streets, and it was
(05:43):
something that was overwhelming. Not only the homeless came to
eat on Ashley Street. We closed the street off jso
they come and provide security for that event. We have entertainment.
We also have haircuts and clothing giveaway and entertainment. We're
(06:08):
also collecting food for Thanksgiving and so we've done this
event sort of like a free Thanksgiving meal in the
middle of the street. Our students that are enrolled in
our culinary Arts program, they actually prepare the food for
the homeless. This year, we're doing something a little bit
(06:31):
different with one of our volunteers who have been a
staple with Jade Stanley and her business as well, where
she has been able to get vendors to prepare the
food this year along with some of our students that
are graduating and actually this Friday, and we want to
(06:55):
make sure that I give them a shout out because
they have really been working hard to make this happen
and so we're very excited about something new with the
culture that we have been doing for twenty seven years.
We normally feed anywhere from twelve to fourteen hundred people
(07:17):
on that day from eleven to one, and it's Saturday,
November the twenty second, from eleven to one at Clara
White Mission at six thirteen West Ashley Street. And so
we want the community to help us in our efforts
not only to feed the City for the homeless, but
(07:40):
also for Thanksgiving. You know about what's going on, you know,
with the SNAP program in we have people who have
never been to our doors coming to our doors in
continuing to need support and help. And you know, I
know that we have seen an increase in the number
(08:03):
of families that are coming and we're expecting that even
at Feed the City. So we're asking the community to
step up for us. You can make a donation. You
can go on our website to www Dot Clara White
Mission dot org and go to PayPal and make a
(08:24):
contribution to our efforts, especially around the holidays time. This
is the time for a hand up, not a handout.
So whatever contribution that you're making, not only just for
Feed the City but other holiday events that we're having,
it would help the individuals who look just like you
(08:47):
and me. You know, people have had jobs at one
point and time, have failed on hard times, and so
Clara White Mission continues to be that faith net for
families that are needing our support.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Community.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Shawnee speaking to Jacobe Pittman here is a servant ready
to help those in need. And I'm reading this Earth
of White stood for the Claire White Mission, restoring dignity
and serving our neighbors in need, understanding that we will
have the sit down, and I love coming out and
(09:24):
serving that day. I put my gloves on, and you
know I am everywhere.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
You're a mistress of ceremony for the day. We just
have us a good.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
Path, you know.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
And it's a pleasure to serve, just to see those
that are less fortunate and then they see us serving.
It builds some kind of stability to understand that we are.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
In this together.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
So community, if you can donate, they are trying to
raise approximately fifteen thousand dollars and also collect food donations
to ensure no family goes hungry.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
This holiday season, Jacoby.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
They can go on the website and donate and they
can drop off items at the Claire White Mission.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
Yes, they can do both. They could write a check
and nail it, or they can come by and drop
it at the Clara White Mission at six thirteen with
Ashley Street, or they can make a donation one line
to PayPal community.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
This is a call to action. This world is in crisis.
The Claire White Mission is a staple in our community.
Every year Feed the City happens that this is the
twenty seventh year.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
This is for homelessness, people.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Who are homeless, for low income families, those that are
in need.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
And it's free for all.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
Including haircuts, clothing, and of course entertainment. I know your
son is going to be on the ones and twos
with me again this year.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
It's a family affair.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
Community and we are here to serve. But the giving
does not stop after Feed the City. No pittment keeps going.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Yes, like the ever ready battery, right, so you know
I might get I might get a little rest about
a week, but you know it's the next thing that
that's going on. And you know after Feed the City
will still be taking in items down perishable items, you know,
like assorted cans, goods, canned food, crit can soup and fruit,
(11:23):
and things to make a Thanksgiving dinner, turkey, ham, chicken,
gift certificates, all those things that not only for Thanksgiving
but just you know, for a daily meal or even
from for some of our homeless clients that come small
(11:44):
items that they can put in book bags because a
lot of times you know, they might just get that
breakfast meal. Uh, so we make sure that we not
only give them breakfast, but we provide snaps for them
as well. And so as you know, it takes money,
it takes resources in order to make that happen, Shody,
(12:06):
And you know, we're appealing to the community and asking
them to help us during the holiday food drive that
we're having. And also you know the wish list that
I just mentioned to you as well. So you know,
together we do better, and when we know better, we
(12:26):
do better, you know what I mean. So, if you've
never volunteered to serve for the city, I'd like to
give you the name. Her name is Jody to volunteer
and her number is seven o four eight six zero
six nine eight two. And now if you'd like to
(12:47):
give a donation or would like to be a vendor,
because that day we also again give out clothing, We
do nails for the ladies and haircuts for the men
because you know, Seannavie want them to have dignity. You know,
a lot of people don't want to be in the
(13:08):
situation of being homeless. You know, it's kind of like
they've lost their way. But the Clara White Mission is
that organization that will pick them up, give them a
hot meal. In addition to providing training and culinary arts.
If they're interested in going through our fourteen week program
(13:32):
at the Clara White Mission and they provide the hands
on training for them to get their surf safe. It
allows them to do hands on training in front of
the house in the back of the house as well.
And we have many we have over two thousand, I'm
sorry to a dozen of restaurants and hotels that work
(13:55):
with us that hire our students. So even if you're
looking to hire some students, give us a call. We
like to give them an opportunity to work in the community.
And also before they graduate, they have to do an
internship at some of the businesses here, and as you
would like an opportunity to do that and perhaps even
(14:18):
even hire them after they've gone through their internship program,
we embrace that and we'd love for you to give
us a call. And for that, you would call the
Clara White Mission at nine zero four, three five four
or one six two and you would ask for Sharon.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
Wright, Community Shawnee speaking to Jacobe Pittman here to serve
but show that she is connected to our community. Please understand,
the Clara White Mission is a nonprofit organization and at
this time any donation is a taxable write off, So
please understand your giving also allow you to get and
(15:02):
I'm sure Jacoby or anyone of her staff will be
able to help you understand that once you give, you
will get a receipt so that you can help with
your taxes. Jacoby, I just wanted to throw that in
there because we do know that there are some people
out there that can assist monetarily, and that is one
of the avenues that will help you continue at.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
The Clara White Mission.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
But as we go into the holidays and we know
that the world is in crisis, our spirits are still
with our community and we are getting ready for the
thirtieth annual December to Remember. And there is a story
behind this event where it goes way back, way back.
But today as we fast forward, the Divine Nine is
(15:47):
still intact. The Divine Nine is still serving.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
Now.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
You may see them out in their colors and they're stomping,
but they serve in the month of December.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
At December to Remember.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
If you would just tell the community a little bit
about why you brought Nissember to remember to Jacksonville.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Well, first of all, it was a joint project with
the radio station where we have been doing this for
thirty years to make sure that families. We selected five
families and their stories were read over the radio. And
(16:27):
so for many years we would work with nonprofits in
the community and we would select and receive about over
one hundred volunteers and the Divine Nine would come in.
What we would do is they would select each of
(16:49):
the Divine Nine would select the family, and we would
read their stories, compelling stories of what has happened and
how they've made it through their challenges. And I got
to tell you, doctor McGowan has been our sponsor for
these families for over seven years and that is a
(17:12):
really really big commitment. And not only that, we have
their party at the Legend Center, and this will be
the thirtieth year, Shotty that we have done this awesome program.
And we could not do it without you, because without
your stories, without the information on social media and your website,
(17:36):
families would not know about this, and nonprofits that submit
the stories to us for us to consider, we wouldn't
know anything about it. And so we have had families
you know, the kids go out and go to college
and they come back and they tell us about their experience.
(17:56):
So this year, celebrating our thirtieth years, we have asked
some of the families to come back and tell their
stories to us. So we are looking forward to that.
It is upcoming the Christmas Party, the closed party to
(18:18):
those families that will be receiving support from the Divine Nine,
and so we want to make sure that this year
is over the top for the families that are selected
and their stories that are being read to our community.
And you know, my shout out to the community as well.
(18:39):
They have been able to donate to those families when
their stories are read over the radio, and we should
be doing that in the next you know, three weeks
or so, because Christmas will be here before you know it.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
You know, Jacobe, I was just saying that the year
has flown by, and while we are in crisis, we
are still in the mood to give. We are still
in the mood to uplift here in Jacksonville and in
our community community. Shawnee speaking to Jacobe Pittman. She is
here to talk to us about just engaging and supporting
our families. December to Remember is a event that is
(19:16):
emotional because we are helping people who are in dire
straight and their stories will tug at your heart because
there are children involved and as you know, life is lifing.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
It is lifing, it is lifing, and you know, this
year we want to make sure that we have more
sponsors for the event along with doctor McGowan and his
wife as well, and you know, they bring their children
out to the event every year because you know, it's
(19:49):
important to give but it's also important to volunteer to
give back and they are examples and role models as
parents when they their kids to the event, and so
we want to make sure that you know, one he
gets recognized for being and doing good deeds in the community.
(20:10):
And we have a new partner this year as well
as Walgreens, and they're doing a toy drive for us
for those families that have children and those that will
be selected for the December to Remember.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
Jacoby Pittman on Community Viewpoints Shawnee, just enlightening the community
about the servants in our community. Jacoby is one of them.
You see her pounding pavement, you see her boots on
the ground, definitely making sure you know where to get
the groceries nowhere to get free food. Jacoby Pittman is
(20:47):
boots on the ground for families this holiday season. She
is empowering everyone through her giving of her spirit, her time,
and this energy that she has the day of December
to Remember.
Speaker 3 (21:02):
It's a total.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
It's amazing. It's like h Sanna is in the building.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
Sannah's gonna be there too, Shiny. I know you've taken
your picture every year with Sannah and tell him what
you want for Christmas.
Speaker 1 (21:16):
And Jacobe, you said that with the December to Remember,
families are chosen, you receive letters. How can those that
wish to submit a family in need get in touch
with you?
Speaker 2 (21:28):
Well, actually we've already selected the families for the upcoming year.
But usually you can either submit your letters to the
Clara White Mission and the upcoming years for that. But
we've worked with the Housing Authority, We've worked with PAL,
(21:49):
We've worked with SOS, We've worked with kill Top Apartment.
So every year we tried to work with different organizations
as well, and so we want to make sure that
those families are taking care of during the doing the
holidays community.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
December to Remember is all about dedicating to uplifting the
spirits of deserving families who just fell on hard times.
Speaker 3 (22:20):
And as we move.
Speaker 1 (22:22):
Towards the new year, know that the giving doesn't stop.
But as we embrace December to remember this year, understand
it's a different level of crisis that we are in.
So if you can give, if you have energy to
(22:42):
or any avenue to provide something special to these families,
to the Claire White Mission, who is the sole source
of both events, pushing to ensure that our community is
taking care of I find it humbling when I do
these events because because I see people who are in
dire straight but they are still so thankful Yes to
(23:06):
the Claire White Mission. So if you can give to
the Claire White Mission, know that you are empowering a
people in your community that can you know, help your community.
Some of these people are just falling on hard times
just for a moment, and the Claia White Mission helps
them up so that they can keep going.
Speaker 3 (23:24):
Jacoby, you have a saying.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
Miss Earth or White has a saying. You used to
say it all the time in our interviews.
Speaker 3 (23:30):
It's like.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
And I still have it. I still have it, and
it says, do all the goods you can come on shining,
say it. Do all the good you can, do all
the good you can, and all the ways you can.
Speaker 3 (23:43):
And all the ways you can, for all the people
you can, for all the people you can, and.
Speaker 2 (23:50):
All the places you can.
Speaker 3 (23:52):
And all the places you can while you can, while
you can.
Speaker 2 (23:56):
That's it. That's a mouthful right there, and listen. That
is the best way to live, you know, because it
is an opportunity to live what you preach and provide
good deeds to people in our community who depends on
organizations like the Clara White Mission. I couldn't do anything
without the support of my board of directors and also
(24:21):
the staff of the Clara White Mission and the many
volunteers that it takes to put the work out that
we provide to the people who are so deserving community.
Speaker 1 (24:32):
If you wish to help the Clara White Mission, be
sure to check out our community calendar page. You will
see the Thanksgiving drive that they're having wild feed the City.
You'll also see December to Remember and how you can
help empower our community. Your community and people who are
just having a hard time right now and maybe not
(24:55):
of their own will.
Speaker 2 (24:56):
Correct And I would say to you as well, Shannie.
Once a month. We also do a food distribution at
Earth's Farm and Market. It is the third Wednesdays every
month from three to six am orun till we run
out of food. I would tell you last month was
(25:17):
an indication of what this month would be like. And
so you know, last month we said about four hundred
and fifty people that came where Joe through the Farmer's
Market and we provided food to them. And partnership with
(25:38):
Feeding Northeast Florida as well, and we also have a
partner with Blue Zone and so they make sure that
we have the items we need. But I also want
to give a shout out to Representatives Wyman Duggan who
made it possible for us to have appropriation along with
(26:02):
Senators Tracy Davis and also Senator Clay Yarber, and I
just want to, you know, thank them, because if not,
we would not be able to do what we do
is provide the additional food. Wyman Representative Wyman Dougar was
the one that provided the appropriation for us to do that,
(26:25):
and his colleagues on the delegation from Jacksonville supported that.
So for those families that are in need, the third
Wednesdays three o'clock to six at forty eight fifty Moncreef Road.
I will say that again because we'd love for you
to come by again. It's Earth's Farm and Market. It's
(26:50):
forty eight fifty Montcreefe Road from three to six pm.
Speaker 1 (26:56):
You mean the Shawnee speaking to Jacoby Pittman, a leader
in the community, and Jacobe I wanted to top the
interview off with how you house veterans, but you have
also helped the veterans and have helped them with housing,
just seeing them through through a transition. Give us a
little snippet on that and how veterans could connect with you.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
First of all, I'd like to just think our founders again,
Artha and Clara White, who provided an opportunity and a
safe haven for veterans that are being served over the
years and we are still providing that legacy. And so
what we have is permit housing, transitional housing for veterans
(27:43):
who live with us at the Claire White Mission. Some
of them have been individuals who were homeless at one
point in time, and so we have been able to
transition those individuals for being homeless on the streets to
now in housing that we provide to them on a
(28:06):
temporary basis and long term we provide three meals a
day mental health drop in dat center for homeless veterans
that are on the street where they can come take
a shower. If they don't have an address, they can
utilize the Clara White Missions address. And so we want
to take care of those men and women who have
(28:29):
given their lives over the years and we appreciate them
for their service and for what they've done for the
United States. And so it's more than fitting for veterans
who may have had some challenging time shining that we
are there for them. And a lot of them have
(28:53):
you know, going through trauma and they've lost their families
or you know they've had at an issue with drugs.
We want those veterans to know that we are here
to help you and take care of you.
Speaker 1 (29:09):
Jacoby Pittman, never stopping, always serving in the community as
a councilwoman, as a leader. Thank you, Jacoby for never stopping.
I know the work is hard, but you you don't stop,
and you make it look easy.
Speaker 3 (29:24):
So thank you.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
Thank you to the Divine Nine, thank you to the volunteers,
thank you to everyone that makes feed the City Possible,
which will happen on November twenty second and December to Remember,
which happens on December thirteenth at the Legend Center. If
you would like to donate to the Claire White Mission,
go to our website all the information on how you
(29:48):
could connect so that you can help bring light this
holiday season to family and friends and community.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
Please do so.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
Jacoby, anything else that you'd like to share with the community.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
Well, Seani, first of all, I'd just like to thank you.
You have never changed from the day day one that
I met you, and you've always been here to help
us along with the team at the station, and I
just want to say how proud I am that we
have been your partner as long as we have, and
(30:22):
so kudos to you. I see you everywhere you represent
the station, and I just want to let you know
it hasn't gone unnoticed. We really really appreciate what you
do for the Clara White Mission and promoting what we
do to make sure we are taking care of our community.
Speaker 3 (30:41):
Well.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
In twenty twenty six, I am going to say this,
I'm going to volunteer more at the Claire White Mission.
I think that sometimes you got to be boots on
the ground and Jacobe, I know volunteers are important for
the organization. Could you please give us the information how
one can volunteer and who to contact.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
Yes, you can call the our White Mission at nine
zero four three five four four one sixty two. And
when you call you can just ask for our volunteer
coordinator and that is Mss Kala and she will put
you in the right place that you need to be.
But if you are interested in making donations regarding the
(31:21):
food drop off pick up, if you would, you can
call and ask form is this Sharon right at that
same number nine oh four three five four sure one
six two.
Speaker 1 (31:33):
Thank you Jacoby for your service, for your hard work
and for doing your due diligence for our community.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
Thank you, thank you.
Speaker 1 (31:41):
Thank you for listening to community viewpoints. Be a blessing
and have a blessed day.
