Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to community viewpoints. As Jeannie feeling blessed and highly favored.
On this Sunday morning, we are empowering our communities around
the globe and around our city. Today I have Katherine Hawkins.
She is the executive director of Safe. Catherine, how are
you today?

Speaker 2 (00:16):
I am doing great.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Excited to talk to you today because I think what
we're talking about is pretty beneficial to our community and
to people. So, Catherine, before we go into Safe, tell
us a little something about Catherine.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Well, pretty much my life is safe. I started with
Safe as a foster probably teen years ago. I was
offered the position of manager of the Charasure Beach Adoption Center.
And when our beloved founder and press passed away a

(00:50):
year ago last July, I was offered this position. And
since what we do is vital, so important to the
community as well as saving pets, and.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Catherine allow us to understand the meaning of safe.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
What does safe mean?

Speaker 2 (01:10):
Safe stands for saving animals from euthanasia, which typically that's
our mission. When the pets time at the animal control
is up and they're scheduled to be euthanized, that's when
we step in. That being said, that's not the only
way that we get pets, we're contacted by the community

(01:34):
for a variety. In fact, this morning, I just got
a call from someone who found a German shepherd with
her puppies, and they found the mama dead this morning
and they're wanting us to step in. So it's not
only from the animal controls for euthanasia, but we also
serve the community community.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Johnnie speaking to Catherine Hawkins. She is the executive director
of here to empower us and to give us hindsight
of what these pets can do for us. Now, I
know you take these pets in and you share with
the community. Talk to the community, Catherine about you know,
how many pets you've rescued, and how the community can

(02:17):
get involved.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
There are many many ways for the community to get involved.
And we'd just like to say we are so grateful,
so very grateful for the support of our community. Hodges, Mazda,
the radio stations are volunteers. Oh my gosh, they are amazing,

(02:40):
and we are blessed. We are truly, truly blessed.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
And you know what, this is a blessing for me.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
I am a lover of pets and I think pets
should be in the home and it helps stabilize the
home somewhat and people, So Catherine, talk and tell to
the community. I see here on your website there's a
lot going on. Your gallery is full of beautiful pictures.
But I do see that donate button. How can the
community get involved by donating and or fostering with safe

(03:10):
All of.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
The above are so important to us. Volunteering there are
many ways to volunteer. For instance, we have the adoption
event on Saturday the twenty fifth, from eleven to three
at Hodges Mazda. The address is one one six '
five Marketplace Drive, Saint Augustine. That would be by State

(03:32):
Row two O seven at I ninety five. And you know,
we're always looking for people to help out with the
dogs at the event. It's a lot of fun. It's
a great outing. You get to meet people, but most importantly,
you get to meet some of the greatest dogs on
the planet. We have volunteer availability at both of our

(03:53):
thrift store as well as our adoption sitters. You can
bathe dogs, hanged with dogs, walk dogs. And did I
mention that our thrift stour is run by an amazing
group of volunteers and they're always looking for help in
the thrift store. So in fostering, for instance, the puppies

(04:15):
that I mentioned, I'm hoping that I can find a
foster home for them. Fostering helps save lives. We can't
take all of the dogs that eat us because we
have a finite amount of room for pets, so foster
waves lives. We can save more lives is people invite

(04:35):
a pet into their home temporarily. And what really helps
with fostering is we're able to tell potential adopters what
that pet is going to be like in their home,
because the way pets are in the shelter is not
necessarily the way they will be in a home community.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Shawnie speaking to Katherine Hawkins.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
He's the executive director for Safe and Catherine, I, I'm
so excited because what you do empowers the community. But Catherine,
tell us about your five oh one C three nonprofit
organization and how the community can get involved and donate
and create the win win Well.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
Because of our five O three status, we are tax exempt,
so donations that you make to us in a monetary
sense can be used as a tax write off, so
that is a win win for both the donators as

(05:35):
well as the pets.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
And Catherine, I understand that this organization is near and
dear to a lot of people's hearts. But what I
gather from this is the animal, the dog, the pet,
and please share with us why it's important to have
a pet in the home to create balance or why
we should adopt to create that balance.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
They just bring so much joy into people's homes. In
a fact, we recently did a post a couple of
posts on our Facebook of people just coming back with
photos and you know, the thanks and how the pets
have changed their lives. It was so heartwarming because this

(06:24):
is I call it a bipolar profession. You really have
the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, and
to be able to share the heartwarming success stories makes
all the hard work worthwhile, really does.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
And I know this is hard work, but I hear
it in your voice that you have a passion for this.
So Catherine, I want to thank you for allowing me
to get to know you and interview you, but allowing
the community to understand what's Safe is all about. And
we hear that you know in the Saint Augustine area
that this is one of the things that we are

(07:00):
trying to promote is helping our neighbors and creating a
safe environment for our pets.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
So, Catherine, is there anything.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
Else that you'd like to share with the community on
Safe Talk to me and tell me about how the
community can pour into safe and how at the end
of the day we can create a balance with a
perfect pet, our best furry fan.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
I would suggest if you are looking for pets to
add to your family, it's best to visit the adoption centers.
Our location and hours are listed on our website, and
I would say that if I was looking for a pet,

(07:45):
I would talk.

Speaker 4 (07:46):
To the staff.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Typically, potential adopters are only in the shelter for a
brief amount of time. Well, our staff and volunteers work
on a day to day basis with these pets. They
know their personalities. So if you're clear about what you're
looking for, the staff and volunteers can be a real
asset to assist your search.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
And Katherine, I understand there's two locations that our community
can go and check out our forever furry friend. What
are your locations?

Speaker 2 (08:20):
We have four locations. The Hollister location is a unique
location and we do have a special fiction on our
website for Hollister, I believe that any rescue that is
as large as Faith are going to have pets that
are not going to do well in a home environment.

(08:44):
Well safe is no kill, So we have a sanctuary
the pet primarily in our Hollister Sanctuary Love Love, Love Love,
the dedicated volunteers and the dedicated path. However, I do
not do well with strangers, so that facility is appointment

(09:06):
only and the address one twelve Norma Street and Holliser.
We also have an adoption center in Palatka. That address
is eight nineteen Moody Road South and the hours open
to the public will be ten to three. Then we
have our two Saint Augustine adoption centers that are both

(09:30):
on the beach. The thrift Store adoption center is unique
because not only do we have dogs available for adoption,
we have a free range cattery in addition to our
outstanding thrift store, and that's another opportunity for the community
to assist. That's where we get the items for sale

(09:53):
in our thrift store, so that's always an option as well.
Then our primary adoption center would be our Treasure Beachchen
Center and that address is one six zero one A
one A South and we have three suites there. We
are open to the public every day of the year
from eleven to three. All of this information you can

(10:16):
see on our website.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
Community.

Speaker 1 (10:18):
If you would like to see all the information about Safe,
it is on our website so that you could check
it out and get involved help save our furry friends. Catherine,
anything else that you'd like to share with the community.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
At this time, Well, Shanie, you have been very very thorough,
not to mention absolutely pleasant, So no, I think that
I think that we have covered everything.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
Well, thank you so much for your time on community viewpoints,
and I know that there is a lot of people
looking for a forever furry friend, so community be sure
to check out our community calendar page. All the information
is there on the upcoming event that.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
Would be Hodja's most us and the event is Saturday,
January twenty fifth, eleven am to three pm. The address
is one one six ' five Marketplace, Saint Augustine at
State Road to zero seven at I ninety five, and
the information is also on Facebook.

Speaker 1 (11:23):
Thank you so much for your time and thank you
for being a part of Safe and you know we
hear your passion and due diligence. So thank you for
doing what you do as the executive director of Safe.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
You are most welcome. It's been absolute pleasure.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Community.

Speaker 1 (11:40):
Get out there and find your forever friend. As we
continue community Viewpoints, we are highlighting the Deltas as they
celebrated their anniversary this past week.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
Welcome to Community Viewpoints.

Speaker 1 (11:53):
As Shawnnie feeling blessed and highly favored on this Sunday morning,
wanting to strive and thrive in the community, so wanted
to share a message from someone that I've seen growing
in the community, empowering our community. So today I have
Andrea see Scott in the studio with me. Andrea, how
are you this morning.

Speaker 4 (12:12):
I'm doing wonderful, Shanni. It's so great to be here.
How are you, Andrea.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
It's the end of the year, and I wanted to
bring in one of the sisters that I see just
always doing something. And I think that's the motion when
we go into twenty twenty five, we all have to
have action plan and be in action. So Andrew, if
you would talk to us and tell us a little
something about Andrea see Scott.

Speaker 4 (12:34):
I am the woman of many hats, which most of
us are I'm an entrepreneur at heart. I have been
an entrepreneur full time since nineteen ninety six. I am
a believer, I am a wife. I am an immigrant
from the wonderful island of Jamaica, just like you, and
I love people. I love empowering and enriching women's lives.

Speaker 1 (12:57):
Community Shawnee speaking to Andrea see Scott empowering our community
as an entrepreneur, there is a journey of uncertainty. But
if you believe, as Andrea said, and one of the
things we have to do in the holiday season is
to believe.

Speaker 3 (13:13):
But if you believe, you can't achieve.

Speaker 1 (13:14):
So Andrea, talk to us about how you came to Fruition,
because I know you've had a journey. So tell us
or talk to us about your journey and how you
have empowered women and communities across the globe.

Speaker 4 (13:30):
Shani, I truly believe that it was God ordered. I
have had a love for helping women first of all,
for serving the community period and I've always found myself
in those places, whether it was in ministry, whether it
was through my sorority del Stigma theyve sorority incorporated, whether
it was through my entrepreneurial endeavors. I've always always believed that,

(13:54):
first of all, women are amazing, and two that whenever
God puts a in your heart, he gives you provision
and so you got to want it. And absolutely that
belief factor is huge. If there's no belief, honestly, there's
no moving forward. And so part of what I do
in empowering women is to help women to really believe.

(14:17):
And not just myself, but myself and my husband we
are in partnership together with our company. We also coach.
We help people to bring their dreams to fruition or
whatever they're already working on, to help to scale.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
That between these Shawnee speaking to an entrepreneur a community
advocate in our city around the globe, Andrew, I know
you started off with just helping people look beautiful. Talk
to us about how you transitioned from that piece of
your journey and how you are thriving today.

Speaker 4 (14:49):
Thank you for that. Johnny. You know, I like to
start by saying that I knew in my twenties that
I was meant to be an entrepreneur because I didn't
hate work. I just hated going to work, like going
to the same place every single day. It's just how
I'm wired, and there's some people that are wired like that.

(15:09):
And in my twenties, I knew that I needed three
types of freedom in whatever career endeavor, whether it was
a nine to five job or an entrepreneurial endeavor, I
knew that I needed three freedoms. One was freedom of time,
freedom of income, meaning to be able to create the
amount of money that I wanted, And location freedom. I
wanted to be able to work wherever I wanted to work.

(15:33):
And so what I found was that the traditional job
market was not fulfilling those three needs. So I either
got bored real fast or I got like, oh, I
love the people, but I hate the job. I love
the job, but I hate to pay and you know whatever.
And so I was introduced to my very first entrepreneurial
kind of side hustle. People call it right now, we
call it you know, we're in a kind of gig

(15:54):
economy where people are doing different things on the side. Well,
I fell in love with a cosmetic line that most
people know, Mary Kay Cosmetics, because my mother was selling
mary Kay and she introduced me to the product. I
loved the product, and then she talked to me about
earning some extra money, and that's how I got started.
I got started with mary Kay. It was not ever

(16:16):
on my radar, but most of the things that were
successful at are usually not on our radar. But God
knew that I needed to be in that community of
women for such a time as this. I started when
I was twenty seven years old with my own business
with mary Kay, and I grew it and became the
youngest Black woman to achieve the top position in the
history of mary Kay. Even today, twenty one years later,

(16:39):
I still hold the distinction of being the youngest Black
woman to debut and to become a national sales director,
and so I'm really really proud of that. I learned
a lot of principles of success with mary Kay, and
in twenty twenty, after twenty six and a half years
with the company, I made the decision to retire and

(16:59):
start work work, building a business with my husband.

Speaker 1 (17:02):
Community Shawnee speaking to Andrea C. Scott Thriving in the community,
empowering each and every one of us as she speaks
to us about her journey today, I wanted to share
Andrea with you because with every season, we have to
pivot and change and Andrea has done that, and she
has been successful in doing that. Andrea talk to us

(17:24):
about the feeling having been with a company, thriving, being successful,
holding distinction, and then having to pivot to another place.
How would you say the community or anyone listening, how
would you say they should start that journey?

Speaker 4 (17:44):
So I would say the first thing to start with
is faith. It's faith in yourself. It is very scary
to be in your fifties closer to retirement than you
are starting over, and then the side to reinvent yourself.
So it's not easy. It's very very scary. So you

(18:06):
need courage and you need a great support system. And
I'm actually feeling real emotional right now for some reason
because I just remember just taking that first step. And
so definitely you want to make sure you've got good
people that are in your in your space that will
encourage you. Because most people love familiarity, they love safety

(18:26):
and security, and I am all for it. But sometimes
while it doesn't feel safe to take that leap, and
as a believer, I believe that when you leap that
God will catch you. So for me, in taking that
leap and leaving behind everything that I knew, I had
a built in fan club, I had status, I had

(18:47):
a great income, and you know, it was it was easy.
But sometimes when God wants to move you to another place,
he kind of makes you uncomfortable and shakes you out
of the nest like the birds, and you gotta fly.
You just gotta fly, spreader wing, the fly and so shiny. Honestly,
for anyone, any woman or man for that matter, But

(19:10):
I know that women are my focus that is looking
to reinvent themselves, whether it's starting a new career, whether
it's going to get your college degree, whether it is
starting a business. Just know that you can do it.
You are enough. You are absolutely enough, and if you
can dream it, you can achieve it. Have some good

(19:32):
folks get in your corner, because sometimes people, if they're
scared themselves, they'll try to put that beer on you
and say, girl, you're close to retirement, why are you
doing something else? Or girl, you should just stay a
little longer, or are you sure you can do that?
Those type of things. You want to flock those people
out of your ear, your air gates, and your eye gates,

(19:52):
because they will try to discourage you, and they just
really think that they and so our friends and families,
they really do want to save us, so to speak,
and spare us from pain. But I'm going to tell
you that sometimes the pain of change is greater, has
to be greater than the pain of staying the same.

Speaker 1 (20:14):
Unity Shawnee speaking to Andrea. See Scott empowering us this morning.
A lot of people are making changes as we move
into a new year, and retirement is one of them,
or just making a change to pivot to find a
new journey or a new place. And Andrew is here
to help us understand that this journey is all about

(20:35):
believing and having a leap of faith. Andrew, I know
that with what you do today coaching, that there are
principles in life or things that we need to do
to help our vision board. What does your vision board
look like for twenty twenty five?

Speaker 4 (20:51):
Okay, so my vision board looks more like experiences with
the people that I love. Stop chasing money because sometimes
you tate money and this collateral damage because people get
hurt and it depends on you, know what it is

(21:12):
that you do. So my vision board now looks like
what my husband and I are doing to help people
to be a blessing to people sharing ideas. I do
have a new home on my vision board. Let's let's
be clear. Okay, the busesn't money answers all things, but
it's not the primary thing, because I believe when you

(21:34):
serve people that you will be rewarded for that. So
I've got my new home or my vision board, and
I also have experiences with my mom. I want to
be able to travel and take my mom to places
that she's never been before, and so having those experiences
and now it's more about the people that I can help.
So people are on my vision board and just just

(21:57):
just peace, just peace. I think I've kind of settled
into God. Whatever you have for me in this season
is the what I want. The material things are great,
but really my vision is how many people can I
help in their endeavors.

Speaker 3 (22:12):
Community.

Speaker 1 (22:13):
Shaanni speaking to Andreas Scott empowering us this morning on
how we need to envision life and how we need
to move forward, always trying to empower the community with
the messages each and every Sunday. And Andrea has a
life journey that is empowering and she has not stopped.
Just know that Andrea has many hats, as she said,

(22:34):
and with all her hats, she still had time to
talk to me and allow me to introduce her passion
of living. And Andrea, I know that with life there's
punches and bumps and bruises. What would you say going
into twenty twenty five? What would you say would be
a mantra for twenty twenty five?

Speaker 4 (22:57):
My mantra, I'm a whole ye twenty twenty five? And
what does that mean? That just came to me actually
a couple of days ago, And it doesn't actually rhyme,
but it is. Everybody has a vibe, and for me,
it is about being my authentic self, being real, being

(23:18):
the person that I was created to be. You know,
I've had a lot of bumps and bruises. I've had
all of the things that a lot of people go through.
I've gone through divorce. I've gone through the loss of
my dad, the loss of my sister, the loss of
my pastor several years ago, but it was all gone
through health issues and just having all of those things,

(23:40):
and a lot of people are still mourning and burying
family members that will never see twenty twenty five. I've
had my share of phone calls, and so really I
want to come alive. But I want to be a
vibe I want to be a whole vibe in twenty
twenty five where people see me and look, what you
see is what you get. What you see ist that

(24:00):
you get. So I'm running. I'm running for it.

Speaker 1 (24:04):
And when you say health issues, I know that health
is one of the things that we need to talk about,
but we'll also need to address right walking and talking
or just what do you do to keep your body
healthy so that your mind stay healthy.

Speaker 4 (24:19):
Oh, I'm so glad you asked that, Shani. So one
of the things that my husband we've been we got
married in twenty sixteen and so we're closing our eighth year,
going into our ninth year. One of the things that
we promised each other was that we would take our
health and wellness seriously. We want to be the healthiest
that we can be so we can live longer, stronger together,

(24:42):
and so we work out. Matter of fact, my husband's
at the gym right now. I'm getting ready to go
to an event. So but usually we'll walk, well, we'll
lift at the gym. I'm about to take a karate
class I'm excited, or a self defense class. I can't
depending on which one, you know, is making me feel like, hey,

(25:03):
you know right now, it's like it's between those two.
But also eat changing the way we eat. Matter of fact,
my husband and I we change the way that we shop.
We shop more wellness. We have an online wellness business.
We're wellness advocates, and so we take care of ourselves.
We take our vitamins, We definitely watch all of the

(25:26):
sugar and all of those things. My dad was diabetic,
my mom is a cancer survivor, and so health and
wellness absolutely is at the front of our minds. So
definitely moves your body, even if it's thirty minutes a day.
It doesn't have to be anything crazy, but thirty minutes
a day, it just go walking or gardening, or you know,

(25:46):
skip rope and you're in your houses you have to
jump rope. But anything like that is being proactive to
maintaining your health, get your screenings and all of those
type of things.

Speaker 1 (25:57):
So thank you so much Andrea and Scott for joining
us on community you voice today, empowering us understanding that
as we move through life, life will throw us many curves,
but if we believe and have a leap of faith,
we can achieve whatever we put our minds to. Thank
you so much for that message today, Andrea, anything else

(26:19):
that you'd like to share with us?

Speaker 4 (26:20):
Oh wow. The only thing I will say, Shannie, is
if there is a woman out there that is struggling,
you know that you're meant for more. You know you've
got this giant inside, but you just can't seem to
get her to come out. You're a lioness. You've got
it going on, but to get it going out is
what you want. And if you need help, feel free

(26:42):
to contact me.

Speaker 3 (26:43):
I believe in you, Andrea.

Speaker 1 (26:47):
How can a woman who would need this empowerment get
in contact with you?

Speaker 4 (26:52):
You can contact me. My email is Andrea NSD like
Nancy Sally David, So my first name Andrea then NSD
at dot net. Or you can look me up on
my social media Facebook Andreas c Scott and Instagram be
Andrea c Scott. So just message me or email me

(27:13):
and I will be more than happy to share and
to be a blessing.

Speaker 1 (27:18):
Thank you so much for listening to community viewpoints. Be
sure to check out our community calendar page for what's
going on in the community.
