Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, this is Carol Miller. Welcome to our Get the
Letout calendar. Fifty years ago. On August fourth, nineteen seventy five,
Robert Plant's family vacation on the Greek island of Rhodes
came to a stop when he was among five injured
in a single vehicle auto accident. Robert awoke in the
front passenger seat, discovering what bad shape his wife was
(00:20):
in behind the wheel. Maureen's injuries were life threatening. Their
daughter and son were in the back seat with Jimmy
Page's daughter. All three children were relatively unharmed. Robert didn't
realize yet the extent of his own injuries. He had
to flag down help in a remote location, concerned for
the loved ones under his care. On August fifth, nineteen
(00:53):
seventy five, led Zeppelin's management sprang into action responding to
Robert Plant's auto accident in Greece. Robert's wife, Maureen had
lost a lot of blood, so she needed a supply
for blood type flown to her. To her manager, Richard Cole,
stepped into the rescue. Robert's injuries were too extensive to
be treated locally in Greece, so he needed transport elsewhere,
(01:15):
even if it meant being released in the dead of night.
Robert was loaded into a helicopter and flown to the
rooftop of a medical facility in London. The late Richard
Cole facilitated all of this. On August sixth, nineteen sixty nine,
(01:42):
a review by a lady named Anne Sachs was carried
in the Dallas Morning News. She said that a supporting
duo Southwest fob outshined led Zeppelin at the Texas State
Fairs Coliseum. Underneath the headline stating quote fob flies over
the led zebbe, she states local boys made Good easily
(02:03):
stole the show from the top build led Zeppelin unquote
and leaves out the four standing ovations that Zeppelin received
and to the encores, and Jane Ferguson's piece for the
Richardson Daily News mentioned those ovations. Jane also conveyed band
members after show remarks. Jimmy said the audience and their
four ovations were quote fantastic. On August seventh, nineteen seventy one,
(02:27):
Led Zeppelin played in Montreux, Switzerland, to a crowd of
two thousand inside the casino, more fans outside who couldn't
get tickets heard the show anyway thanks to a carefully
placed outdoor sound system. Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant had
the idea to let those people outside here. Promoter Claude
Knobs made it so, and a number of that overflow
(02:49):
audience captured the first of two nights on tape. It
includes a rarely ever performed snippet of ramble On, although
ram Milan was in led Zeppelin's two thousand and seven
(03:10):
setlist in London and I was lucky enough to be there.
On August eighth, nineteen sixty nine, led Zeppelin played San
Bernardino's Orange Showgrounds at the Swing Auditorium. Robert Plant added
the numeral one into the album title he was discussing
here here at the time. The only known audio from
(03:36):
the Swing Auditorium show favors Jimmy Page because his guitar
drowns out everybody else. Only when Jimmy lays out can
you make out the others in led Zeppelin and even
their audience. This is Carol Miller. Thanks for Getting the
