Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, this is Carol Miller. Welcome to our get the
Leadout calendar. Fifty years ago. On March seventeenth, nineteen seventy five,
Led Zeppelin's show at Seattle Center Coliseum should not have
broken anybody's bank. That's because an inter office memo within
Atlantic Records said, quote, because of the current concern for
concert attendance and existing economic situations, led Zeppelin has fixed

(00:24):
a top ticket price of eight dollars and fifty cents unquote.
Scalpers did not necessarily share that mindset. Seattle police arrested
two suspects who were accepting twenty dollars bills in exchange
for tickets that were actually worthless. One of those suspects
had pocketed nearly fifteen hundred dollars cash. Victims of Seattle's

(00:45):
scalpers could not enter with counterfeit tickets. On March eighteenth,
nineteen sixty nine, filming for the movie Super Show took
place in England. We used to say it was March
twenty five, fifth when led Zeppelin arrived to participate, but
led Zeppelin's own official website now says it was March eighteenth.

(01:06):
An organ was already at the studio but John Paul
Jones never got to play a note. Everything he played
on Dazed and Confused was on bass, and that's the
only song the filmmakers needed led Zeppelin for. Then they
were excused. We had to sort of sandwich ourselves between
everybody else's equipment, and we were prepared to play two numbers,
but they only wanted one. We did Days and Confused.

(01:26):
I said, what about communication, Baker, OHI it's not necessary.
Don't worry. Jimmy said. He was impressed with how they
employed various camera angles, including over the top of the band.
Led Zeppelin eventually bought the original footage and have been
putting it to good use ever since. Fifty years ago.
March nineteenth, nineteen seventy five, led Zeppelin's second Canadian tour

(01:48):
stop of the year took place in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The crew brought with them, as usual, John Paul Jones's
stage piano used on his interlude during No Quarter. For
the main theme of No Quarter, John Paul turned to

(02:09):
an electric piano with a wobbly effect courtesy of a
phase shifter. With his feet, John selected the speed of
the phase shifter slow, medium, or fast We're hearing Fast.

(02:31):
Fifty years ago. On March twentieth, nineteen seventy five, Led
Zeppelin played their second straight night at Pacific Colosseum in Vancouver,
and the riffs and rhythms were just flowing out of them.
Even during the encores. They were seeing where the music
might lead them next. Whole lot of love had just
steered them into the world of funk music, with Robert

(02:52):
Plant quoting lyrics from James Brown's Licking Stick mixed with
Viking Whales kind of like immigrant song, And then a
recently crafted riff came out of Jimmy. Three and a
half years later in Stockholm, Sweden, led Zeppelin reshaped this

(03:14):
riff into Ozone Baby. Fifty years ago. On March twenty first,
nineteen seventy five, it was a good night for unexpected
lyrical references as led Zeppelin played their second show at
Seattle Center Coliseum. All within a few minutes. Robert Plant
quoted famously recognizable lyrics from Buffalo Springfields for what It's

(03:35):
Worth and Joni Mitchell's Woodstock. When the groove turned into
kind of a scar reggae backbeat, Robert quoted Bob Marley.
Robert Plant was on such a role that night that
he inserted, for the first time lyrics from Gallows Poll
into their nightly version of Trampled Underfoot. He called this

(03:57):
trampled under Gallows and made a habit of it, including
all five nights at London's Earl's Court Arena. This is
Carol Miller. Thanks for Getting the Letout. Check back next
week for another Get the Letout Calendar podcast.
