Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, this is Carol Miller. Welcome to our Get the
Letout calendar. On June ninth, nineteen seventy seven, Jimmy Page
braved the rain in New York City to give a
radio interview. Led Zeppelin' stretch of six performances at Madison
Square Garden was longer than ever before. Jimmy said having
a day off after two nights on gave necessary rest
to Robert Plant's vocal cords, and it also allowed for

(00:22):
regular maintenance to amplifiers and other back line equipment. Jimmy
mentioned he had broken one of the eighteen strings on
his double neck guitar during Stairward a Heaven the night before.
He said he had vented his frustrations during the solo
the way he had when he was a teenager first
encountering the guitar. On June tenth, nineteen seventy two, Led

(00:54):
Zeppelin played an evening gig in Buffalo, New York, but
it wasn't the first event on there itinerary for that day.
Jimmy Page had earlier caught Elvis Presley's only matinee performance
in New York City. Elvis performed with the TCB Band,
featuring lead guitarist James Burton. After his two thousand and
one orchestral opening, Elvis came out and broke into a

(01:17):
song that led Zeppelin also had covered live. RCA Records
happened to be recording Elvis's Madison Square Garden performance for
live albums. The next time Led Zeppelin played at the Garden,
they would record their first live album there. The soundtrack

(01:38):
to the song remains the same. Forty five years ago.
On June eleventh, nineteen eighty, Led Zeppelin rehearsed in London
for their fourth day on the Ell Stage at Shepperton Studios.
They had a limited touring schedule ahead in Europe and
apparently some kinks to work out. The point of rehearsals
is to get the mistakes out of the way so
you could learn from them, and certain trendsositions during Kashmir

(02:01):
were still kind of dogging led Zeppelin after five years.
In this instance, Jimmy Page was out of sync with
the rest. He strummed the G chord that should only
be heard in a later section of the song. Well,

(02:25):
that's why there's a rehearsal. On June twelfth, nineteen seventy seven,
Led Zeppelin's recent show at Greensboro, North Carolina, was the
subject of a newspaper column in nearby Burlington, Elbert Marshall's Journal.
The article clocked the show's length at three hours and
twenty seven minutes. Elbert justified the subsequent ringing in his ears,

(02:45):
quote here, it's been twelve days since seeing and hearing
led Zeppelin, and the ears still ringing. But it was
worth it. Unquote. When this went to press in Burlington,
North Carolina, ears must have been ringing in New York.
Listen to the pitch shifting and echoing effects applied in
real time to Robert Plant's voice while he introduces John

(03:06):
Bonham's drum solo. On June thirteenth, nineteen sixty nine, Birmingham
Town Hall became the first UK venue to host led
Zeppelin following their second tour of America. Birmingham is the

(03:26):
major city in the Midlands where John bonhaman Robert Plant lived.
Led Zeppelin launched their tour there, hitting several cities on
a package deal with fellow British groups Liverpool Scene and
Blodwin Pig. They would give two performances in London on

(03:53):
opening night of the Royal Albert Halls Pop Proms, a
seven night series also featuring Fleetwood, Mac and many more.
This is Caroll Miller. Thanks for Getting the let Out.
