Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, this is Carol Miller. Welcome to our Get the
Letout calendar. On June sixteenth, nineteen sixty nine, Led Zeppelin
recorded a studio session for the British radio show Tasty
Pomp Sunday. They were between tours of America and preparing
their second album. Host Chris Grant asked how similar Zeppelin's
second album would beat to the first, but the question
(00:21):
kind of fell flat. The full band interview did not
make the broadcast, but Zeppelin's music did. Their new song
What Is and What should Never be benefited from having
studio overdubs. In other words, it had multiple layers of
Robert Plant's vocals and Jimmy Page's guitar forty five years ago.
(00:53):
On June seventeenth, nineteen eighty, led Zeppelin performed live for
the first time since the previous summer Networth Festival in England.
A tour of Europe was going to have them playing
gigs almost every night for four weeks. Robert Plant remarked
on stage in Dortmund, West Germany, how long it had
been between gigs. Every time we seem to do gigs
(01:13):
now we always have to say it's been a long time.
Let's say it's somely been ten months since the last one.
Robert dressed comfortably for the show. His sleeveless T shirt
proudly displayed a wolf's face, a reference to the Football
League's championship team, the Wolverhampton Wanderers forty five years ago.
(01:39):
On June eighteenth, nineteen eighty, the Sports All in Cologne,
West Germany filled up with eight thousand people anticipating a
good evening. Blood up. Jumie Page stepped up to the
(02:00):
mic between songs. This was kind of uncharacteristic of him,
but Jimmy Stick on this tour involved delivering the same
on stage greeting as his bandmate Goodning. Robert Plant offered
the catchphrase once again ahead of led Zeppelin's encores. It
always had the desired effect. Evening never files. On June nineteenth,
(02:27):
nineteen seventy seven, Led Zeppelin played at the San Diego
Sports Arena. This was the only performance separating their six
nights in New York from six nights in Los Angeles.
Throughout the version of Sick Again in San Diego, John
Bonham kept the beat slow and steady. A song led
Zeppelin used to finish in under five minutes was now
stretching across six and a half minutes, a new record length.
(02:50):
Their tempo experiment gave Robert plenty of time to spit
out some rapid fire syllables. Jimmy Page likewise found ample
room to pull off some rapid fire guitar licks. Forty
(03:15):
five years ago. On June twentieth, nineteen eighty, led Zeppelin
played at Forest National in Brussels, Belgium. This was their
third show on the European tour. It was also their
third time ever performing at the venue, and the number
of songs common to all three of led Zeppelin shows
in Brussels was three. Black Dog and Stairway to Heaven
joined Whole Lot of Love in being Zeppelin's most repeated
(03:38):
anthems in the city. Whole Lot of Love had been
half an hour long back in seventy two, but they
shortened it to under one minute in seventy five. This
last time, they split the difference and kept that final
encore going for almost twelve minutes. Got all those numbers.
(04:04):
