Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, this is Carol Miller. Welcome to our get the
Leedout calendar. On October sixth, nineteen seventy two, Led Zeppelin
took a break from their tour of Japan. With a
few days off, they were able to visit Hong Kong.
Nobody in led Zeppelin had ever been to Hong Kong before,
but their four albums were all sold there. When they
arrived at the airport, led Zeppelin fans were ready to
(00:20):
greet them and ask for autographs. That night, Peto Young
reportedly quote took the boys on the town and forgot
to fork out the cash. Peto was a benefactor of
Hong Kong's music scene and managing director of Just Good Productions.
Three months later, Petro helped to bring the British singer
Tom Jones to perform in Hong Kong and not led Zeppelin. Incidentally,
(00:44):
both Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones had played on
some of Tom Jones's hit records long before led Zeppelin.
On October seventh, nineteen seventy two, Led Zeppelin gave a
press conference in Hong Kong. Reporters and photographers met them
at the Mandarin Hotel, where all four members of Led
Zeppelin sat side by side at a table and answered
(01:04):
questions while they hoped to play in Hong Kong some day.
This particular visit had other goals in mind. John Paul
Jones said he hoped to collect some Chinese musical instruments.
Robert Plantt said Led Zeppelin were interested in music around
the world, which he termed street music. Zeppelin had just
started to perform their own untitled new song, later called
(01:26):
the Song Remains the Same Hong Kong. We went away
for two days and came after Hong Kong were wet
neck kid of a brain, which too had yet to
find the day and for the campaign. On October eighth,
nineteen sixty three, the Rolling Stones played in Cheltenham, England,
as part of a month long tour organized by Don Arden.
(01:48):
Don's daughter, Sharon, was turning eleven years old the very
next day. She would become Sharon Osbourne in nineteen eighty
two when she married Ozzy Osbourne. Behind the scenes, Peter Grant,
Zeppelin's manager in the future, was working as tour manager
for Bo Didley, The Little Richard and The Everly Brothers.
All of those acts opened for The Rolling Stones on
(02:09):
that tour, including in Wolverhampton, where they played the day
after Sharon's birthday. Local resident Robert Plant was fifteen when
his aunt and uncle took him to his first concert.
Robert recently told The Wall Street Journal Bo Diddley was
the most important act for him that day, quote, I
loved the rudeness of his sound, his odd rhythms and
(02:29):
lurching feel. On October ninth, nineteen seventy two, Led Zeppelin
played in Osaka, Japan. They played pretty much the same
songs each night on that tour, their second time through Japan.
One exception to this came during their encores, when they
played a brilliant six minute rendition of stand By Me
by Benny King. While Led Zeppelin were not varying their
(02:49):
set list from night to night, there were still areas
in which they could explore, and if a song came
to them in the moment, they would let it fly.
Case in point, Robert Plant remembering some lyrics from Neil
Young's Down by the River. On October tenth, nineteen seventy two,
(03:19):
Led Zeppelin completed their second tour of Japan. The final
show was the shortest of the tour. They played for
only an hour and a half in Kyoto compared to
the two hour affairs they had been putting on previously.
That's mainly because they skipped a few songs they ordinarily played. However,
they weren't out of new song ideas. Nobody could have
predicted led Zeppelin would cover Brenda Lee's nineteen sixty one
(03:41):
single Let's Jump the Broomstick. Led Zeppelin did not intend
for this to be their final tour. They wanted to
return in nineteen seventy five, but had to cancel their
tour plans. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant made up for
(04:02):
that with an extensive Japanese tour in nineteen ninety six.
