Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, this is Carol Miller. Welcome to our Get the
Leadout calendar. On October twentieth, nineteen forty, the British drummer
known as Phillimore Lincoln was born in Sherwood in Nottingham.
Ahead of his thirtieth birthday, Epic Records was preparing to
release his debut album, The North Wind Blue South Late Yardbird.
Chris Drea took a photo of Phillimore Lincoln that made

(00:22):
it onto the back cover of the album. He had
also photographed Led Zeppelin for the back cover of their
debut album. Two engineers manned the London recording sessions. Glenn
Johns had engineered led Zeppelin's debut album and his brother
Andy Johns had helped out on led Zep two. Jimmy
Page recorded a guitar solo for Phillimore Lincoln's US single

(00:43):
You're the One. On October twenty first, nineteen seventy six,
Led Zeppelin attended the West Coast premiere of their film
The Song Remains the Same that took place at the
Fox Wilster Theater in Beverly Hills, which is now the

(01:04):
Savan Theater. Jimmy Page said he enjoyed seeing the film
as part of an audience because quote, you could see
people getting off on things, applauding and laughing at the
right time, generally vibing unquote. Led Zeppelin's Beverly Hills after
party was held at the Bistro restaurant. Photos taken there
include Robert Plant and a sweater sharing a table with

(01:24):
fellow musicians Linda Ronstadt and Ronnie Wood. Other openings that
Dave took place in San Francisco, Dallas, Chicago, Boston, and Toronto.
Each of these led Zeppelin premiers donated proceeds to the
Save the Children Federation. On October twenty second, nineteen sixty nine,
led Zeppelin succeeded in releasing their second album in one year.

(01:45):
To achieve this, they had recorded in thirteen studios while
they were touring. As John Paul Jones has said, yeah,
I'm looking back, I can't imagine how we wrote and
recorded it. I wouldn't plan something like that.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Now ever, but just seemed the time to do it.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
We wanted to get a record, and we were playing
so much. Actually, it was in very exciting times. The
Beatles Abbey Road came out in Zeptember and it had
become the highest selling album of the year so far. However,
led Zeppelin two accumulated half a million orders in the
US prior to its release. That album wound up selling
more in the final two months of nineteen sixty nine

(02:24):
than Abby Road or anything else. On October twenty third,
nineteen sixty nine, Led Zeppelin three was released in the
United Kingdom. Critics decided it was a departure for led Zeppelin. However,
guitarist and producer Jimmy Page did not see it that way.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
A lot of the criticism of the third album was
the fact that people wanted to put us in a
bracket and they couldn't really understand why there was a
this acoustic musing. They hadn't paid attention to the first album,
where there's quite a lot of acoustic music. One that
I mean, it's all there.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
Robert Plant deemed led Zeppelin three a huge success by
anything the critics had to say at the time. We
wanted to try and shock ourselves to see exactly what
we could do, and that's what we did.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
It was probably one of our finest moments, and the
fact that we deemed that we had to do it
at all is a fine moment.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
On October twenty fourth, nineteen sixty nine, Led Zeppelin played
at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland. The show was called
quote a Scorpion Exposition one evening filled with music, love
and peace. Opening act Grand Funk Railroad were due to
start performing at eight pm. They got started only after
a twenty minute delay and played for nearly an hour.

(03:32):
This was their fourth and last time sharing a bill
with led Zeppelin. People were relaxing on blankets on the
floor while watching led Zeppelin from the aisles between seating sections.
When this was found to be a fire hazard, they
were directed to the seats. One newspaper account outside of
Cleveland mentions the Hell's Angels motorcycle club provided security at

(03:53):
the show. Quote nobody hassles a Hell's Angel unquote. This
is Carol Miller. Thanks for Getting the Letout. Check back
