Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, this is Carol Miller. Welcome to our get the
Letout calendar. On December eighth, nineteen sixty nine, Led Zeppelin
had just played their last gig of the year, a
show in the suburbs of Paris, France. Before that, they
toured the US four times during that year. Zepp's many
American tour dates throughout nineteen sixty nine really paid off
well for them. They had released two US singles while
(00:22):
they were touring, and the second one wound up cracking
the top five singles in the US. In January of
nineteen seventy, Whole Lot of Love hit number four on
the Billboard Hot one hundred. Robert Plant compared his current
band to a prior group with John Bonham that also
jumped with him. Robert told the press quote, I knew
(00:42):
Zeppelin would be bigger than the Band of Joy, but
I had no idea it would reach the kind of
proportions that it has now. On December ninth, nineteen seventy one,
Led Zeppelin played the Locarno Ballroom in Coventry, England. Dave Pegg,
who was the bassist and mandolinist for Fairport Convention from
their fifth album right on through today was in that audience.
(01:14):
Dave had previously played bass in a band called The
Way of Life with drummer John Bonham. Bonhaman played in
the Way of Life since its beginning in June nineteen
sixty six, and Dave Peg played bass on the last
dozen or so of John Bonham's gigs with the Way
of Life. They both left that band in October nineteen
(01:35):
sixty seven. All just so you know. Fifty years ago,
on December tenth, nineteen seventy five, Led Zeppelin went to Jersey, England,
but they weren't doing a show. Zeppelin were actually playing
as the backup band for a pianist named Norman Hale.
Robert Plant sat on a stool because he was unable
to walk due to a serious auto accident. From that summer,
(01:58):
fast forward thirty two years years later to another December
tenth show in two thousand and seven, the three surviving
members of led Zeppelin plus Jason Bonham played another unique gig.
It was the O two Arena Reunion charity gig in London.
The show's official recording came to be known as Celebration Day,
(02:22):
Hey Honor. On December eleventh, nineteen sixty eight, a TV
show called The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus was
filmed in England. There were many famous artists on the
show besides the Stones, but the show never made it
to TV because Mick Jagger wasn't happy with it. It
was finally released in nineteen ninety six. John Lennon appeared
(02:46):
with Yoko Ono and Eric Clapton and called themselves their
dirty Mack. Maryann Faithful, who was Mick Jagger's girlfriend, sang
on the show. Jethro Tell and the Who also appeared.
That new band led Zeppelin were considered but were ultimately
turned down from the show. Director Michael Lindsay Hogg gave
them a demo opportunity, but it came down to Mick
(03:07):
Jagger's decision. Quote Mick thought led Zeppelin's demo was a
bit too guitar heavy unquote. On December twelfth, nineteen seventy two,
led Zeppelin played a second sold out show at the
Capitol Theater in Cardiff, Wales. Zeppelin played back to back
nights like that one at just about each venue on
that tour. Led Zeppelin kept their sets pretty much the
(03:29):
same from one night to the next, but these double
gigs gave Zeppelin an opportunity to change things up. When
it came to Medley's. Zeppelin was starting to play Elvis
Presley songs as part of their medleys. An audience recording
of the second Cardiff show begins with two Elvis songs
that lead into I Can't Quit Your Baby. This is
