Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, I'm a sports breed huskar Bob's edition was Sean Callahan.
I have been like an, here's Jim, Well, you know Seano.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
In recent years, there's been a big build up to
the starting quarterback, especially if it's an open position, a
returning starter, or maybe a situation where the kid didn't
play particularly well. And I look at the situation today
with Dylan Royola and I don't think do you really
think we need some kind of a big announcement. Is

(00:27):
there any confusion as to whether he's going to start?

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Yeah, I don't think it needs to be much of
a public parade down O Street. I think that everybody
knows where it's heading. Is a matter of how Matt
Rule wants. I mean I could just see him just
casually is yeah, and you know, obviously we're going to
deal in a quarterback. I just kind of a casual
drop like that, or just the depth chart comes out,
and I mean he has a reporter you'd have a

(00:52):
hard time with a straight face like saying how did
you guys decide on Dylan coach? I mean, I don't
know if any of that would be necessary, but yeah,
they'll become a point here. Maybe by next week where
you know he might drop that. I'd imagine the week
of the game, they'll put out the depth chart like
they always do, and Rule is not one of those

(01:13):
guys that hides on putting a debt. We've seen some
coaches not like to put depth charts out before the opener.
You know, the transfer portal too has changed there. Used
to be used to be kind of fearful to put
out that depth chart too early in August because then
a guy could actually enter the portal and then transfer
to a new school. Now you cannot do that anymore.
The portal is closed. You can't transfer right now or

(01:36):
enter the portal as a new entry. So that does
take a little heat off the coaches for all positions.
I mean, anything back to twenty eighteen when when Scott
Frost named Adrian Martinez over Jebia Jebia one in the
portal the next day and was able to get to
Oregon State, you know, to join them that school year
still and you don't have to worry about that now
as a coach. As far as making some of those

(01:58):
announcements in depth.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Chart, I've often wondered why is it that coaches even
released a depth chart. I know it's great for the
fans and maybe Tom Osborne never thought it was a
big deal. But what's the value of releasing a depth
chart other than the informing fans and media?

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Yeah, you nail them. I think it's that's important. Well,
but mans, no team. I mean, ninety some thousand people
are eighty some thousand people come to the games and
millions watch. You know, there's a lot of interest, and
I think it's your duty to, Hey, these are our
guys we're playing with this year. And but yeah, I

(02:38):
think we could pretty much name ninety five percent of
this depth chart right now, if not more. I think
there's a couple of spots here and there, but I'm
not expecting a lot of big surprises. I mean, it'll
be interesting which freshmen make that depth chart. Besides Ryola,
you hear a lot about Keona Davis, a defensive lineman.
Could he actually play more? We know Vincent Shavers will

(02:59):
be on there, Carter and Elson, Jacry Varney, but we'll
a guy like Kiona Davis, a new defensive lineman they
brought in from high school last year. Is he a
guy that could get some action this year as well?

Speaker 2 (03:10):
I look at it this way. It's Christmas morning. We're
going to open up the present and see who's in
the box. What as opposed to you know, a big
build up during the week that this guy's the starting
left tackle and this is the second string left tackle.
Wait until Saturday, then we'll know for sure. We'll know
who the starters are by who's on the field.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Christian Jones from West Side is probably at least considered
by many the number one high school recruit in Nebraska.
He tells the paper that he'll decide by the second
week in September. Doesn't like talking to forty year old
guys anymore, wants to talk to people his own age.
Handicap this one for a shato.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Yeah, you know, he's looking to make the early announcement.
And I think Nebraska and Oklahoma are the two teams
with Miami, you know, right in there in the mix
as well. And it'll be interesting to see what visits
he takes in the fall if he can get out
to a couple more campuses in Nebraska wants him now,

(04:04):
and they did lose Will Hawthorne, a linebacker, decided to
stay home at Iowa State. Right, He's right from nearby
and Gilbert, Iowa. So a linebacker is a priority in
this class, and obviously Christian Jones is that that priority.
I think he's really diligently taking his time. You don't
see a lot of recruits anymore, and let you know,

(04:26):
take it this deep. Usually you're going to make your
decision in July or August. So he's the rarity of
a guy that's taking it deeper into the year. But
you know, clearly he's got the luxury to do that
with both Nebraska and Oklahoma high on him at this point.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
So he's made officials to Auburn, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Do
you think he'll make any more officials before the decision
is made, given that the season is here for him.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Yeah. I mean Miami, I think is one to watch.
Wisconsin's been one he's talked about. It just depends. Yeah,
it's hard to take officials in this season, you know,
because generally that means you're traveling on Saturday morning early
to get somewhere and you got to hope the game
time is somewhere. It'd be hard to get to Miami
even you know, if Miami played at two thirty, it'd

(05:13):
be hard to get there on time for the game.
You can make it. But you know that's the thing, Like, yeah,
Lincoln will be no problem. As we know Oklahoma, he
can get down there pretty easily too on a Saturday.
So yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if he made a
couple of more visits here before he get there. But
he's done things kind of his own way this process
as far as where he's gone, how he's announced that,

(05:36):
how he's done things, and so nothing would surprise me
at Christian as he's gone through this process.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
You heard from Tony White yesterday, right defensive course.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
Tony White and Rob Devorceek.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
Yes, anything worth taking away.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
You know, it's just that grind of camp. You know,
Week three, another big scrimmage. He thought the tackling was
a little sloppy in that first screen image, and you
know they would like to see a little bit better
tackling moving forward this week when they scrimmage again, especially
on Saturday, because Saturday will be for all intents and purposes,
be their their their, their biggest scrimmage of camp. You know,

(06:14):
they'll get a lot of work done here this week
and then they'll probably start to begin utech preparations at
some point the following week.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
You know, it's, uh, what's true at this point in
a fall camp. Uh, the the positions that are truly
up for grabs, all the guys know, and all the
guys know which ones are locked down. So it's the
ones that are locked down that they got to they
got to be mentally tough to keep pushing because they

(06:43):
you know. But the ones that are fighting for the job,
that's where you see the hustle.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
Especially with the nil component. You know, if you're getting
paid a bunch of money, sometimes it takes the pressure off.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Indeed, yeah, they're not.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
They're not paying a bunch of money to have a
guy sit on the bench.
