Speaker 1 (00:00):
On word to Sports Breeve now huskar Boz edition, but
Sean Callahan live and like Rosie, all right, Seana, let's cook.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
And we got baseball, we got football. You got some
key stuff here that nobody else knows.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
Yeah, you know, obviously in caa baseball tournament around the corner,
but you know, for football, starting on June one, camps
begin and visitors begin, and and this is really recruiting now.
The month of June is so big for Matt Rule
and his coaching staff. They're going to have over thirty
official visitors over three weekends. But they're also going to
(00:33):
host the seven on seven event, you know, coming up
here at the beginning of June, the Boneyard Bash, and
they're gonna have sixteen of the top seven on seven
teams take part in a camp on June sixth. But
it's also a tournament, you know, in an event, and
eleven of Adidas is top sixteen seven on seven programs
(00:56):
are the of their top teams will be coming to
Lincoln from all over the country. And there's over around
fifty four and five star guys on these teams, so
there's a lot that will be brewing here in the
month of June, you know, with football in the camps
coming up here as Nebraska gets really ready to try
to build this recruiting class and it's an unknown era
(01:19):
as we kind of try to build rosters as we
know that too.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
I don't want to sound facetious Seano, but frankly, why
does Nebraska waste any time on high school recruits? In
the era of the transfer portal? You go to the
mid majors, you go to the Northern Iowas, you go
to the one double A level programs, the college football
lower division program met America, Why mess around with high
(01:41):
school kids? Will wait until they can prove they can
play at the college level and then recruit them here
out of there.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Well, I still think you need fifteen or so high
school recruits a year. I mean, you're not going to
fully go away from it, but yeah, you're going to
still go out and try to find guys almost like
you treat it like an NFL draft, like you have
money allotted for your draft class for first round or
second round or third rounders, et cetera. And maybe even
(02:09):
some undrafted free agent type guys that are that are
you know, developmental recruits. A few of those guys too,
but you're not going to just fully go away from it.
And look, the portal is expensive. You know, if you
find a guy in the portal, that's good, Odds are
a lot of people see the same guy you're watching,
and it's going to cost you a lot more money.
Just like in the NFL, free agents that are highly
(02:31):
coveted costs more than rookies that you draft. So you
need to have a good blend. And that's why Pat
Smiths here at former NFL general manager because the model
is not much different now when you're trying to manage
the money and then how you take these players.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yeah, and I wonder. I think Pat obviously is a
very accomplished NFL talent observer executive. His record is impeccable,
But I think there's a big jump between a high
school kid and an established college football player. And I
just wonder how long the learning curve is for somebody
like that to be able to look at a high
school kid and be able to project like you can
(03:09):
for somebody that's been playing for a year or two
at a college football program.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Yeah, there's certain positions where high school players are ready
to come in and play, right away receivers, maybe one
of them, maybe running back, maybe corner, but it's hard,
as you know, linebackers can but when you're talking a
line of scrimmage player, those are the guys that are
costing the most money. O linemen and edge players and
d linemen out of high school and obviously quarterbacks at
(03:33):
the top of that list too, And oftentimes some of
those guys don't play right away as Shrew freshman. You know,
Jackson Cantwell is represented by Drew Drew Rosenhaus out of Missouri,
and he evidently got two and a half million dollars
from Miami.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
Nice. Hey, Sean, I want to get to baseball, but
before we do, we've got some big town schedules dropping
later this week, right.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Yeah, Thursday. We'll get weeks zero through three kickoff times.
So what that means is we'll get the accurate in
the Houston Christian games. We might learn Black Friday too,
what time the Iowa game kicks, and possibly the Friday
night kickoffs two for Big Ten and hopefully when Nebraska
is a draw home game. I would be shocked if
they did play another, but pretty good chance we'll be
(04:19):
on the road for a Friday game this year.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
Pretty good a bout a minute left. Pretty good draw
for Nebraska baseball compared to some of the regions that
could have been cut too, don't.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
You think, Yeah, Holmo's got a first rounder type guy
they might see. We don't know, maybe they'll save them
for the second game, but that first game will be
you know what you'd expect in a two to three
matchup with then on the road in North Carolina. There's
no easy regional draw really when you look at it,
but for Nebraska to be in this situation, you know,
(04:49):
Creighton got shipped down to Arkansas, Kansas, and you know,
naturally when you're in Nebraska, that's the one you always
gravitate towards the Arkansas's hosting. That's the closest one, and
they generally send you to the closest regional. Creighton and
Kansas got that draw this time around instead of Nebraska.
So you know, usually we've seen Nebraska to go to
Stillwater or Fayetteville a lot over the years. At this time,
(05:12):
they're going to go somewhere completely brand new.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
Okay, Sean always got to have a Huscar catch up buzz,
you know what I mean, Just kind of stay in
touch all right, big guys. Thanks Sean Callahan,
