Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sports Brief Huskar Buzz edition. We had our big Red Insider,
Sean Callahan live and Lincoln Rosie.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
It was a wild weekend, Shana. You earned the massive
sums that they pay you at on three over the
weekend because you were chasing all sorts of stuff. Let's
begin with offensive line Geep Away. First of all, Nebraska
has never had an assistant coach named Geep before, but
we get one now, and this guy really likes to
run block.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Yeah it's pronounced jeep like the car.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Well, I'm gonna call him deep anyway.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
We gotta go ahead, but yeah, Jeep. Wade comes from
Georgia Tech, where he obviously had a pretty good run
there with Yellow Jackets, and agreed to a two year contract.
You know, he's gonna make about seven hundred eight thousand
dollars peryear. I believe it's about a two year deal.
Worked roughly one point five million over the two years.
(00:48):
But he's a guy I know. Matt Rule had talked with.
He expressed interests and he's going to start right away.
He'll be at practice today. But it ended things that
quickly with Donovan Riola on Saturday. I think Matt Roll
delivered the news to Donovan Royola what direction he was going,
and on Monday, jeep way, he'll be here and then
(01:09):
you know, that's how Matt Roll operates on decisions like this,
and he'll be able to coach the guys for the
bowl game. But it will be interesting to see what
that offensive line group looks like now for this bowl game.
And you know just how some of those guys react
to the news of a coaching change. But Wade comes
in with a very good background and he's very experienced
collegiate offensive line coach.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
In your opinion, does this signal a philosophical change with
regard to Nebraska's approach? This guy is about blocking for
the run. This guy has had teams in a pass
happy conference the ACC lead in rushing. And if that
is so, where does this fit Dylan Royola's profile?
Speaker 3 (01:52):
Yeah, I just think in general four years of Donovan
Royola and look, this was supposed to be a really
good offensive line this year for Nebraska in terms of
what they experienced the experience coming back, but they gave
up seven sacks to Michigan, nine sacks to Minnesota. I mean,
you could argue those two moments those two games really
(02:13):
turned the season for Nebraska, giving up sixteen sacks and
those two losses. So I just think in general it
was time for a change. I mean, you had Royla
four years. The development wasn't there, the consistency hadn't been
there for this conference, and you're right. I mean the
run game is a huge part of it, and just
(02:36):
seeing how he can make this group better moving forward,
because I don't know how much better they were getting. Yes,
Imma Johnson led the conference in rushing, but a lot
of that was Imma Johnson as he led the conference
and making tacklers miss at the stat they keep track
up and he forced more tacklers to miss him than
any player in the Big Ten.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Do you think that Dylan Ryola's uncle's departure has anything
to do with his personal future in the program.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
You would think it would, but I don't know if
it's as big as you think. I don't know if
the relationship was as close over this season with the
two brothers, Dominic and Donovan. You know. Yeah, Look, things
were no picnic this year. When you give up nine sacks,
seven sacks, injury happens. I mean, I think it was
a pretty stressful year. Across the board. I mean, the
(03:27):
big thing with Dylan Riola is his injury coming back
from the injury, and he's under a pretty significant contract.
So there's a lot of other factors in play with
Dylan Riola than just his uncle not being here now.
And we'll see how things play out on the you know,
in the next couple of weeks here. The portal doesn't
open till January second. But you know, nothing yet as
(03:50):
of now. But obviously these things happen very quickly when
they do happen.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Okay to Rob Arich, this was the defensive coordinator at
San Diego State and on the Way Coast. As y'all know,
they like to move the ball, but people did not
move the ball against his defenses there or in Idaho.
What do you know about this former South Dakota guy.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Yeah, ol Rich is a Midwestern guy, so fits the
part of the country. I spoke last night with a
coach in the Mountain West that went against him, a
head coach, and he said he's outstanding. You know, their
their defense was one of the best. I mean, what
I'm interested in now is, well, a couple of those
players come with him from San Diego State, is they
had a few really good players of their defense, but
there's no doubt, No, he's a four to two five guy.
(04:32):
So you will see Nebraska get out of a three
three five as a base. And they had been running
some four man front but out of his base, and
they're going to make the move to a four two five.
And you know what excites me about that is you'll
see Keona Davis, for example, and Williams win Airy lineup
as two true defensive ends in a four to three
(04:53):
And I think that fits those guys better than being
you know, down lineman in a three three five. So
you'll you'll see kind of a change in phil philosophy. Now,
he won't be here for the bowl game. He's not
going to coach the bowl game or be a part
of that, but he'll be in Lincoln and he'll pop
in and out, i know, over over the next couple
of weeks. But it will still be Phil Snow running
(05:14):
the show here for the defense before old Rich comes
in here and takes over.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
That's what it boils down to now anymore, who's who
you bring in with you? And I'm sure there was
a significant discussion with Matt Rule and these guys. Okay,
who can you bring with you from Georgia Tech and
San Diego State? Who can win in the Big ten.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
You've got a couple of big, fat guys for the
middle of that defensive line that are quick and strong.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
You know, fat guys are usually not you know what
I mean.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
You got to the NF, you got to have.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
An aircraft carrier, So Seana, overall, you're pretty happy with this.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Yeah, I just think how quickly Matt Ruhle moves on things.
He doesn't drag his feet. But look, he's got money
to work with too. I mean, these guys are ultimately
get great contracts. O Rich has got a three year
deals our understanding, so you know, when he sees what
he wants, he operates on it as quick as we've
ever seen a Nebraska head coach. He is not drabting
(06:12):
firing Ryola the way they did on a Saturday. We
haven't really seen that happen at Nebraska.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Well sewn. This will do it for now, right, except
for breaking news, which there may be more of as
we go.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
Yeah, both practice starts up today. I mean, and there's
gonna you always shut her down. This is this is
the buzz season.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
I'm ready, I'm ready to keep going if you year.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
This is the time of year when the Chinese really
really want to know what's going on.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
All right, well, Sean, we'll talk to you tomorrow. That's
our big Red insider, Sean Callian and like
