Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right on the Sports Bring Nout Oscar Bozz edition
with Shawn Callahan. Life in Lincoln here, Jeff, all right,
shout up.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
You know, the newcomers, this is the nature of college
football today. You're going to have fifteen to twenty new
guys every year, transfers, free agents that were brought in.
And in your view, what has been the impression so far?

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Well, yeah, this group of newcomers is the biggest we've
ever seen. There's twenty nine of them here right now,
thirteen high school recruits and then sixteen transfers all here
for the spring. There's still seven more freshmen that will
get here later. But I think immediately you notice who
these guys are, and I think that's the nil era.
Now You're going to go out and invest in some

(00:42):
roster acquisitions now every offseason, and when they show up,
you're going to notice them right away. I mean, Elijah
Pritchett and Rocko Spindler on that offensive line, you know
you knew right away, Like those are the guys the
Sam mccollaugh when you see him, or Williams win Area
on defense, those are the guys that they've invested in
here on this defense and then the receiver position to

(01:04):
me is the most impressive. There's four they added. All
four are probably going to play this year. Dan Keyen,
Isaiah Hunter hardly Gilmour, don't sleep on him from Kentucky.
He is a second year player enrolled in Kentucky. When
he arrived there, he was I believe he was still
sixteen seventeen years old. He went, he left his high

(01:25):
school career year early to start at Kentucky, and I
think he'll make a big jump in. There's Cortes Mills,
the true freshman from Florida. So there's four really good
receivers you notice immediately on this football team along with
some of those other guys.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Oh that means clearly, It says to me and I
think anybody else who's sober about it, this is going
to be a pass oriented offense, probably a seventy thirty
maybe a sixty five thirty five split because you just
don't bring in those kind of receivers to m stand
on the sidelines or shuttle in option plays. Well, that said,
talk about holgar Person's behavior in a practice the other day, Well, you.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Know, Dana Holgerson said on Thursday, you know they're they're
fifty to fifty, and that's just not accurate as far
as sixty five. I mean they're going to They're going
to run the ball, Matt rule. That's a big part
of how you have to win this league. On their
Thursday practice, they ran twenty four scripted plays of inside
a run with three different groups, and Dana Holgerson said

(02:25):
he's never ever seen or he's never been able to
do that ever because they don't usually have the numbers.
But that just kind of gives you an idea. Yeah,
they have good receivers, they're going to utilize these receivers,
but they are going to run the ball. I still
think they need a second running back established though, to
get to that level, to run it effectively at a
fifty to fifty pace, because right now it's Immit Johnson

(02:48):
and then you don't really know who that other one
is going to be. Besides, you could be quitting eyes,
it could be a Kind Nelson, it could be somebody
else at this point, and you know, to get to
be a fifth fifty run team, I do think they
need to establish who that second back is going to
be and can they can they do it? Can they prove?
And I do think the jet sweeps can be a

(03:08):
part of the run game too, and they've got a
lot of speed jo Hory Barney you know, can do that.
So you're probably you'll probably see you know, five six
wide receiver carries in the run game this year every game,
as well as what they do with a tailback, which.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Is fine, but you're right, Uh, there's no way you
can be a fifty to fifty run team with one
running back, not in the Big Ten conference. Uh, if
you're going to run the ball fifty percent of the
time and that would include jet sweeps, probably there's just
no way one running back will hold up for the
whole year in the Big Ten with nine conference games.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
No, the you know, very few backs in this league.
Even average twenty carries a game, you know, usually eighteen
is towards the top of the scale, you know, and
Emma Johnson's been a thirteen to fourteen carry type guy
in his peak. So that's canny get himself up and
other four or five carries a game and doesn't sound

(04:02):
like much the average listener probably what it is. It's
a big big jump in this league to go you know,
two additional series a game maybe and take take those
hits every game for two more series.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Sean Kelly on here. Quinton and ives has been around
for a while. Sean, is there an issue with him
or is it just a matter of maturity development or what?

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Yeah? I mean he scored a touchdown the Bowl game.
He's just you know, he said, been here two years
and they've always been high on him. They just they've
just had other backs here. Now now the road is
clear for him to make a run at that number
two job. They really like Makai Nelson, who most people
probably don't know much about. He was a late edition
last year. They added him to the roster in like July.

(04:48):
I mean he didn't show up till late and then
he got here in August and and joined the team
for fall camp. But they're really high on him too
as a long term guy. Then there's a couple trew
freshman Connor Booth and Jamarion Parker as well to keep
tabs on.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
So how's your bracket? Did you make all all the
number one seeds in the final four?

Speaker 3 (05:11):
I think I got two or three of them. I
have to go back. I did two brackets, but I
know I had Duke. I have Duke playing Auburn. But
I'm it is like one of those years that I mean,
it's it's just gonna be hard to win your bracket
pool and when it when it goes for ones like
this and there's I think six of the eight top
two seeds advanced the elite eight. I mean, it's just

(05:35):
there's not a lot of science in these bracket No.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
All I got to do is look at payrolls and
that that's the best way to determine.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
That's right.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
But your cheat of but I'm a disappointed shadow. If
you did too, that means you don't have a sheet
of integrity. And I thought if anybody in America had
a chet of integrity, it would be Sean Callahan.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
I think they're pretty close. I might have one game
off with the other, but my final four is the same.
I had you beating Florida. I thought, yukon't going to
beat flight. I picked you. That was my big upset
I thought, and it didn't happen. So that kind of
threw me off a little bit.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
All right, Thanks Sean Callahan. He's back with us Wednesday
of spring ball continues here
