Speaker 1 (00:00):
Onward to sports Brief now Oscar Bozz edition. But our
Big Red Insider Sean Callahan live and Lincoln Rosie well
a shadow and you have your first first team All
Conference offensive performer in uh eleven years. It's time for
an emergency Husker buzz. But this confirms that Emma Johnson
is the best background here since Amerabdullah.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Yeah a, you know, Nebraska joined the Big Ten. Guys,
they've never had the Big Ten running Back of the
Year the award. The award has existed for fifteen years
in the Big Ten and Amer Abdullah and Rex Burkhead
never won this award. So it does put in perspective.
You know, this is fairly significant in the year that
he had with the rushing numbers that he put up,

(00:43):
and I mean there was no metric really that you
could not give it to him. He not only led
the league in rushing in all purpose yards, he also
led the league in rushing during conference play. Only it
wasn't just you know, non conference yards that kind of
inflated his number. You know, sometimes a guy might get
two hundred four hundred yards and the conference non conference games,
and what he did was in the real games. So

(01:05):
one of the better running back years and in fact,
one of the top ten rushing years in program history
all time at Nebraska.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
In fact, he got better as the season went along.
He started out well, but when you got to the
Penn State game, in the Iowa game, he was really
running the ball very, very well, and his lateral movement
was very reminiscent of.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Abdullah Yeah, you know, just the cutbacks and the moves
and the toughness he had. And any way, em it's
not a big breakaway back. I mean, I think that's
what's different between him and like Jeremiah Love from Notre Dame.
But he was really good at making people miss. I know,
they keep track of that stat on provo focus how

(01:46):
many tacklers do you make miss? And he led the
big ten in that. So he was extremely good at
making people miss. And I believe he was one of
the nations leading receiving running backs too, in terms of receptions.
I mean, he put together also of the all time best,
if not for that one year Marlin Lucky had Jim
and O seven where he got all the checkdown throws
from Tanner Lee or not Tanner Lee, Sam Keller, the

(02:11):
you know, im it's perception number could have been up
there too. I mean he put together not just a
rushing year, but also the receiving numbers.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
In fact, as a running back, you think of Nebraska
over the last forty years has been a really great
running back school, and it has been. But this is
the first All conference running back for Nebraska since Darren
Ddrich in two thousand and one.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Well, no, no Rex and a mirror All.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Conference first team first team.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Oh yeah, Rex was for sure with Monti Ball in
twenty eleven in a mirab Doula I believe was as well.
I mean that, but you had those was like a mirbdula.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
All those guys.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Yeah, there's two backs in the All conference teams. So
those guys were all conference. But you know, this is
the first one since. But they just weren't named the
conference back of the year. Monty Ball and Melvin Gordon
and guys like that, and there was an Ohio State
back I believe too that you know, took those honors
from them. But now Nebraska's never had it. The only

(03:13):
other offensive player they've had win a position Player of
the Year award was Austin Allen Right in twenty twenty one,
and it was kind of one of those years where
he had big stats. But you know, Jake Ferguson was
probably the best title in the Big Ten that year.
Austin just had a really good stat year.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
All right, let's talk about Matt Campbell. This is the
head coach at Iowa State. He's been there ten years,
he's done his time there, and now he appears to
be the candidate for Penn State or is He seems
to me that if Matt Campbell wanted to leave AMES,
he could have done it a long time ago.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Yeah. I always thought if he left Ames, though, it
was going to have to be for you know, a
really good Midwest job, and you know, Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska,
maybe Penn State. And so this wouldn't make sense because
he has turned down a lot of other places. I
believe he's in Ohio Native, so he's from somewhat that
part of the country. It would be a good fit

(04:04):
for him. And look, I don't think they could do
worse than that. I'll put it that way. And you know,
you're getting a culture guy. But he will be walking
into a tough situation. But what else can he do
at Iowa State? I mean, how much further? Can he
take them all those kids that designed their letters of intent,
everything that's happened with that this week, and then you

(04:25):
lose your coach. It's a tough colleg Football is a
tough business right now, and you know if they get
Matt Campbell that that would be a pretty good rebound
after the month that Penn State has had.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Would you suggest that it's not necessarily because he's unhappy
at Iowa State, but because a the money situation there
is acutely troubled problematic. They have one hundred and fifty
million dollar athletic department budget deficit at Iowa State, and
it's his desire to win a national championship. Otherwise, like

(04:57):
I said, wouldn't you have left already?

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Yeah? Yeah. They sent out a letter a while back
to their fans Jamie Pollard that they won't be able
to fully do the rep share at the highest level.
I mean that that's a huge setback at that point,
when you can't even afford the twenty and a half million,
which goes up to twenty three next year, I mean,
when they can't afford that number on top of the

(05:22):
money over the top people are paying, you're just going
to be limited, and you know you're going to be
kind of stuck in that seven to eight win area
and you're not going to be able to probably beat
in the big twelve. Now it's BUYU and Arizona State,
and you know Texas tech teams like that are going
to be operating at a higher level with what they're doing.
Do you think he's going to go if he's got

(05:43):
this one makes sense unless unless there's something internally there
that he doesn't want to be a part of. This
one makes sense for me for Matt Campbell because of
just his background. Interesting though, this is the first job
you've really heard his name on in a while. I mean,
he was the hot thing couple of years ago, but
we haven't heard Matt Campbell's name come up much in
a while, all

Speaker 1 (06:04):
Right, Sean, Thanks our Husker insider, Sean Callahan
