Speaker 1 (00:00):
This scam Aby's Morning News six forty eight onward to
sports Brief the Husker Buzz ediion, we have Sean Callahan
live and like, all right, Seano.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Tomorrow we have a full scale scrimmage, and I'm sure
the BTN will not be there with its TV cameras.
What do you expect out of the first game type
scrimmage of the spring?

Speaker 3 (00:16):
Yeah, it's I mean the seven said it yet officially
with expected that they'll probably scrimmage this Saturday and next
Saturday because they're off the weekend of Easter, and then
twenty six is the final weekend and we know that's
not a spring game anymore, but this would be practice seven,
kind of a mid term type deal. I would expect
some information would make its way out of there because

(00:37):
they are holding the coaches Clintic, so they'll probably be
five hundred high school coaches watching practice as well. And
I would imagine too, you'll see a lot of the
key veteran players, you know, guys like Deshaun Singleton, players
that have played a lot of football here at Nebraska
maybe not playing these scrimmages. That's what Matt Rold did

(00:58):
last year with ty Robbinson now, Shaun Monker, I want
to see some younger players, and he kind of watch
what some of these younger players might have for the
future as well. So that wouldn't surprise me at all
either if we see them go with that approach.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Now, everybody is all excited about Dylan Royola, who apparently
is not two hundred and forty pounds and actually boxed
in the off season, but that doesn't mean None of
that means anything if his knee takes a left turn
and his body takes a right turn. So who's the
backup quarterback and what's the capacity of the backup quarterback
now that Danny Kalin is out?

Speaker 3 (01:32):
Well, yeah, and Heina Carberg is a tight end. I mean,
that's that's the other thing there that really changes the
room from a year ago. But Jayalen Graham's dad, you know,
he came in last year to a tryout camp too,
but he was the NAIA national player of the Year
at Northwestern in Orange City, Iowa. And you grew up
in small town of Iowa, but was a Husker fan

(01:54):
his entire life, you know, always wanted to be a Husker.
Just showed up unannounced to the tryout camp and earned
a spot on the roster, just got a roster spot
last year, and you know, with about a month worth
the summer workouts, he was able to at least make
the travel roster last year and and and be the
play signaler and do a lot of things. And then
by the end of the year he was the number

(02:15):
two quarterback for the ball game. And and he's been
a really valuable asset for Dylan Royola is having an
older veteran that has played a lot of football, almost
kind of like a coach now for him as well.
So him and Dylan have a great relationship. And he
currently is working in that number two role because he
knows the system right and and you know, he's he's

(02:36):
a small town Iowa guy as well, just like Dana
Holgerson is. So they I think the two of them
get along well and and and and he's kind of
been a good fit to be that guy next to
Dylan while these other two quarterbacks, Marcos Stavila and t J.
Latif continue to try to learn the system because this
is just their second week of doing the Dana Holgersson system.

(02:57):
And you know, in a practice setting, yeah, and.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
A physical and mental demands are far higher and more
demanding than any high school kid thinks their imagines. But
I can tell you, if you're the NAIA National Player
of the Year, you're a player. I mean it's a
smaller level, there's no question about it. The athletes aren't
the same. But when you're the very best player and
an entire division of college football, you can play.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Yeah, because people from that division go on to the
unveilment all the time.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
I mean, this guy, I don't know, maybe it's because
of his overall size, but if he had been a
bigger kid, given what he did in high school and
what he did in the NAIA at the nai level,
he would have been a big, big draw in the
transfer portal.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Boy, he was a three time captain, and you know
that's not easy to do either. I mean, it tells
you how respected he was of the program he came from,
and he played safety his first year. Then he took
over when their starting quarterback got hurt as a junior,
and that's when he won the national championship. They in
the next year they were national runner ups, and then
he was the player of the year at Northwestern. See,

(04:04):
he's got a great story. It's sad to think that
stories like this, though, won't happen much anymore after this
year because of the one hundred and five man roster.
That camp that he tried out at, that camp's not
happening this year. They're not gonna be able to do
that camp because they're not going to have roster spots
to get out. So there's a lot of things that
as we get to April seventh and the hearing settlement
case happens, you know, things like this, Jalen Graham said,

(04:26):
we're talking about it, it won't really be that type
of story anymore.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
If you were the parent of a high school football player, seano,
because nobody knows of recruiting better than you do, and
you had a kid who might actually physically be a
late bloomer because of the walk on scenario and the
camp scenario that are going to disappear, what would your
strategy be to try and get to a Division one,

(04:50):
a Power for Power five conference school by the time
your eligibility ran out.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Well, if you have a group of five offer, you
have to take it seriously. You can't can't slow play
those and we've seen it, you know locally. I mean,
there's a few kids here in Lincoln and Omaha that
you know, jumped on like a Northern Illinois offer right
away just to just to get a spot on the restaurant.
You know, you got to get a table, you know,
and get in there at least, and then if you

(05:16):
get bigger, you get bigger. If you don't, you're going
to a good school to develop and play. I do
think Iowa Western will become really a lot more viable,
but they have roster limits too. They can only have
so many active players on a junior college football team.
It's not like everybody gets addressed out at Iowa Western.
But you know, you and K's of the world are
going to become probably more popular too, and you'll see

(05:38):
Division two really pick up. But yeah, a Division one
double A FCS offer that as well is something I
think a lot more kids will have to take seriously
because there's just not going to be as many. Now.
With that said, we've seen Iowa State. They've come in guys,
and they've offered over ten local players. I believe it's twelve.

(05:58):
I mean, I've never seen Iowa State coming to Nebraska
this year an offer like they have because they're playing
a different game. They don't have near the nil money
of a Big ten school, so they are trying to
find high school players that they can kind of get
at the entry level price versus going out and having
to pay for a higher profile high school player or
even a more expensive transfer portal player.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
Yeah, and then Nebraska's not going to be able to
take them all right, Sean, thanks, have a great weekend,
and we'll reconvene here early Monday.
