Speaker 1 (00:00):
We go to sports Brief Now at six forty eight
Huscar Buzz edition featuring Sean kallahand here's Jim Rover good Scott.
All right, Seana, The first big question for Saturday is
the status of a couple of offensive linemen. It looks
like Pritchett's fine. He served his suspension, so he's back.
But what about Spindler. You don't really recover from emergency

(00:20):
hand surgery in a couple of days.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Well they yeah, I mean I think they'll they'll cast
it up and then it'll go from there and we'll
see if he wants it, wants to play with the
cast on me. I think that's where it's at right now.
And you know, my understanding is I think he will
try to give it a go, but you just never know.
Vincent Shaver's had a surgery this last week. He tried

(00:43):
to give it a go at Minnesota and could not.
So it's obviously a pain tolerance thing and player how
much they want to go through. But his finger pretty
much came out of place and had to put it
back in the place. And you know that was done
in Minneapolis initially. I think some stuff had to be
done in Lincoln yesterday as well, But we'll see kind

(01:06):
of where it goes here in New Hoo from Matt
Rule today about that, Well.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Let's visit about what's going on on defense too, cause
we've seen the emergence of a guy that was fairly
beneath the radar at the start of the season, and
that is the defensive back Rex Guthrie from Littleton, Colorado.
He's out there a lot, in fact, two hundred and
thirty five snaps so far. What happened to Marquis Buford,

(01:30):
He's played a lot as a red shirt freshman, Gut
three has is it his job now?

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Yeah? It sure looks that way. Over the last five
weeks he's played two hundred and thirty five snaps compared
to ninety by Marcus Buford junior. So he has been
the starter. You know, was not in a black shirt
as of last week, but it would not surprise me
if he's in black this week from what I heard
last night. But yeah, I think gut three is the guy. Buford.

(02:00):
Veteran players play a lot of ball, but he was
one of the key culprits of the big run that
Minnesota had in that game. You know, the seventy one
yard play, just took a bad angle on that and
just has not been playing his best football. And Guthrie
has been who they've gone in with and played in
those situations, and he may not be.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
The super athlete, but he makes the tackle. And that's
one of the other things that's very frustrating to a
lot of Husker fans right now and certainly to the
ball club too, and that is the tackling by the
defensive backfield has not been great by comparison to say Minnesota.
Minnesota may take a while to get to you, but
once they get to you, they make the tackle.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Yeah, there was. I mean, Donovan Jones is another guy
that has had just some missteps of this tackling. You know,
he's got seven miss tackles on the season now, which
is tied with Shavers for their team lead. But you know,
there's those key situational third down type plays where you know,
appears the right calls made by Nebraska, just the tackles

(03:02):
that get made and and you know two or three
of those a game where they get a first down
because of that. That is a huge deal when you're
like playing the game within the game, and we've seen
that the last couple of weeks where Nebraska has been
seemingly in the right position, but then a key tackle
gets missed. I mean there was a play though Saturday
or Friday, excusingly where there was there was a hole

(03:25):
that was called, you know, and that was a big
moment in that game early seven to six in the
third quarter. It really really turned me. Nebraska had the
game at seven to six, the balls down the two
yard line. At that point, You're like, Okay, they can
get field position and retake the lead in the third quarter,
and then they give up the ninety ninety eight yard drive,
which really completely turned turned the game at that point.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
Yeah. You can talk all you want about statistically on defense,
who's good and who's bad, and what supports success and whatnot,
but if you can't make the stop, the key stop
in the games. And the Huskers have had trouble with
this for a long time, not just this season. It
goes all the way back to when Bowl Pollini was
coach here. They would give up key long drives in

(04:08):
games when they just needed a stop to get momentum back.
It hasn't happened, and it's a frustration that has to
go away. But the tackling, I gotta tell you, Shanaut,
the tackling has just not been fundamentally sound consistently all year.
Can you do anything about that seven games into the year.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Yeah, it's you know, the way you practice on Tuesday
and Wednesday, you can ramp it up. And I don't
know if there's an answer on that other than just
being in a better position to make the play. I mean, they,
I think know what's coming. In most cases, we got
to be in the right position. And guys are tackling
a little higher, it appears, and they should be. You know,

(04:48):
there's just little things like that you can look at
on film. But you know what Northwestern's gonna They're not
a fancy outfit with their offense. They're a very good defense, though,
an opportunistic defense that shut out Perdue. So this is
gonna be another one of those probably low possession, premium
point type game again this week. Just what the way

(05:09):
Northwestern plays when they help Penn State as we know,
in the low twenties and a shutout last week. They've
got to win over UCLA as well. I mean, so
this will not be a picnic. I mean, Nebraska is
favored this week, but you know what kind of game
it's gonna be with Northwestern.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
All right, Well, we'll talk about their two to defensive
ends and Toe Stocky and Michael Kilbain later in the week.
But that's the last thing any Husker fan wants to hear,
is that the other team has two good defensive ends.
All right, stay right there, Shanta. We'll talk later in
the week.
