Speaker 1 (00:00):
We go to sports breaking. Now the Husker fizz edession well,
Sean Callahan live in Lincoln. Here was Jim Well, you.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Got to say one thing. It used to be Seano
that we would perform on a Saturday and have our
own coaches fired. Now we're getting other coaches fired as
Purdue runs Graham Harrald, their offensive coordinator after that performance.
But it really was more expected at of Nebraska. We
expected the Black Shirts to play like they did in
the second half.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Well, and guys in the first half of Nebraska had
six possessions that went inside the forty yard line, so
that they were moving the ball. E're on offense. But
the black Shirts, you know, Nick Staban said this quote,
good defense is travel and on the road in nebrask
That's what they did. I mean Purdue really had no threat.
I mean, their their drive that they scored the field

(00:46):
goal on was a thirteen play in like fifty five
yard drive. I mean they were they were just still
pounding a hammer on a wall at that point. I
mean they were getting three or four yards here and there,
but the defense wasn't allowing them much. I mean a
real threat was that tied end. Max Claire and he
had a couple plays and other than that, you know, yeah,
the defense set the tone allowed Nebraska to get through

(01:08):
those mistakes and the field goal situations. And when you
look at this game coming up this week, Rutgers is
one of the best kick blocking teams under Greg Ciano
in the history of the game. So that should get
your attention. Under Greg Ciano, Rutgers has blocked seventy one
kicks over the course of his coaching career, and you

(01:29):
know that spans back fifteen years at Rutgers, but he's
blocked forty one punts, seventeen field goals, thirteen extra points.
He's scored sixty three non offensive touchdowns during his time
at Rutgers. So there's a lot there to chew on
as Nebraska goes through their issues they've had with some
special teams.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Well there's that, and Nebraska's are perfectionists, but they're also
frustrated that here we are into week four or five
of the year and still some special teams gaffes. Shana,
but also penalty. There was a lot of talk about
the phantom offensive pass interferes penalty, and that was a
legitimate complaint by Nebraska. Brutal but there were other flags.

(02:09):
There were a lot of flags in this game, and
it wasn't just the officials, and this is something that's
hard to tolerate if you're a Nebraska football fan.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
Yeah, we've seen the personal fouls two weeks ago two,
but it was one of the most penalized games ever
in the history of Nebraska football. Perdue on one end
gave Nebraska six or excuse me, eight first downs of
off penalty alone, and that set a record. The previous
mark was six. So Nebraska has given eight first downs

(02:43):
just from Purdue alone. The thirteen penalties that Purdue had
for one sixty five that wasn't the most in history.
Nineteen forty eight, Notre Dame somehow was penalized twenty times
for only one hundred and seventy yards against Nebraska, so
they were close to that record in terms of the
total yard we had. Nebraska's issue. It wasn't a bad

(03:03):
I mean, it wasn't a terrible game. But yeah, the
passitor I've never seen so many pass interferences called in
a game before, but they were the right call in
this cases. When Purdue was draped on Nebraska on those balls, Oh.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Yeah, they're a very poorly coached team. If you look
at the difference between Nebraska and how it plays past
defense and how Purdue played past defense as if they've
never been coached, because they just went they just went
clocked our receiver fundamentally very unsound.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
It was almost like they intended.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Yeah, they were very legit. All of those DPIs were
legitimate flags. There were very few borderlines.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Sean, do you think Matt Rule will get the question
that I had his Monday news conference, which he should
is special teams coach had Foley on the hot seat.
Will anybody ask that question?

Speaker 3 (03:49):
I don't know in that direct of well a phrase,
but yeah, I think in the big picture, you know,
what changes can you make to address some of the
issues you've seen on special teams? I mean, the kicker
situation is what it is with the injury to Albano,
But yeah, a long snapper one is tough because that
should not be an issue. I mean, in the history

(04:10):
of US doing these reports, we've never talked about long
snapping before, and I know that it's just it's not
an issue. It's not should never be a talking point.
It's like making a free throwing basketball. You've better have
guys that can make though. I mean, it's you know,
it shouldn't be this type of a problem. And now
you've got a team coming in with a history of
blocking kicks and punts under a head coach this week

(04:32):
that doesn't really have a high powered offense, but they
find points that way. So this week it really needs
to be emphasized, even more so seeing what it looked
like this past Saturday.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Well, not only that we don't cover punts very well,
we can't return a punt, we can't return a kickoff,
we can't make a field.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
It's a full boat of problems.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, And the thing that you should worry about this game,
Rutgers is not a spectacular offensive team, but they are
a control of the ball team. And Kyle and I
guy is the best running back we've never heard or seen.
He's really he's an NFL caliber back. He's very tough,
he's shifty, he runs with short strides. He's going to
be really tough. He's gonna get you your four or

(05:12):
five yards. He's not gonna get you forty, but he's
gonna get you four or five to seven. And they're
going to keep the chains moving, which is going to
cut down on possessions for Nebraska, which puts an even
greater emphasis on special teams.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Well, now, last week on Friday, Washington put up over
five hundred yards on them. They just couldn't score. They
couldn't capitalize in the red zone.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
They miss field they missed three field goals.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
And but my guy or he averages twenty five carries
a game, So you know what they're gonna do, and
you've got to wrap up. You've got to tackle and
caliamants he's not he's not got a big arm, but
he's a lot like the Illinois guy Altmeyer. He'll he's slippery.
They'll run those RPOs and he'll dump it out to
guys for six or seven yards on third down and

(05:57):
they'll just keep drives alive. You're right, Jim, this will
be another game where you've got to put Cali Montis
in some throwing situations because if it's third and four,
that's right where they want to be with him. Yep.
