Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, he's wanting news onward the sports brief. Now, how
Scarbaza with our big red insider Sean Callahan live and
like a rosie.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Okay, Sewana. How good is the Penn State defense? We
know that they've got at least one All American on
the defensive line, uh mister Danny and Dennis. But the
truth is they've given up a lot of yards and
the other team controls the ball on them. So just really,
how good are they in your view?
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Well, they've got a lot of you know, they still
have draft picks on the team. I mean, I think
that's the key. You got to know they've got athletes,
draft picks, and you know, they've had some bad moments
this year, but as of late, they've played better. I mean,
look look at the Indiana game. I mean they've played
the Hoosiers as well as anybody has in the country.
So I think even look at the games they've lost,
(00:45):
every one of them other than Ohio State has been close.
They lost the Northwestern by one, Ucla by five, Iowa
by one, Indiana by three, the obviously the outliers Ohio State.
But you know, they they it's not like they've played
terrible I do think their coverage on the back end
at times has maybe been an issue in a couple
(01:07):
of their losses, but other than that, they still have
material up front.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
I think if you give up thirty minutes of time
of possession a game, that means you've got some systemic issues,
and I don't know exactly what those are because I
haven't watched a lot of Penn State football this year.
I thought they played pretty well defensively at Ohio State,
and I thought they played really really well defensively against Indiana.
One of Indiana's touchdowns came as a result of a
(01:35):
fumble at the end of the first half or one
of their field goals. So I don't know. It's this
one's a toughie because we thought they'd be really good
preseason number two. But you can't ignore the issues in
the program that they've endured this year.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
What you look at it got. So they go out
and they hammered Nevada and Florida International and Villanova, and
then they have that great overtime game with Oregon and
that just trickled down. What was that sean six in
a row after that?
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Yeah, the UCLA road trip after you know, the late
night Oregon game. Then they had to travel out west,
but they were heavy favorites against the UCLA team that
had previously lost the UNLV in Nevada or UNLV had
beat him, and then New Mexico had just beaten them
in Utah, so that that should have been a win
for him, and then they fell apart, and then Northwestern
(02:27):
was a huge underdog and went into state college in
one and then the wheels came off at that.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Point, what do you what did you hear of interest
from the coordinators yesterday?
Speaker 3 (02:38):
You know John Butler obviously for him this is a
meaningful game for a lot of reasons. But he coached
at Penn State. He's from Philadelphia, grew up following Penn State.
So I know he is excited, you know, to get
out there and coach and get his guys ready for
Dana Holgersson. He knows the challenge of Jim Knowles. I
think they've been studying and watching a lot of even
(03:00):
last year's Ohio State game film because they went against
Jim Knowles in that game, into seeing the crossover of
some of his calls and what he does. But they're
ready for a lot of pressure. I think they know
Penn State's defense is going to try to bring numbers,
just like Jim Knowles did a year ago in Ohio
State when he did the same thing to Dylan Royal.
And remember how upset everybody was with all the screens
in that game, because all the blitz is that Ohio
(03:23):
State product. So you wonder how much pressure is going
to be called, and you know the screen the screen
calls that you might have to check into to combat
the pressure.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Well, this is also going to be a funky night
relative to just the typical home field atmosphere the Penn
State has provided. It's one of the better in the country.
We've been out there and we've endured it. It's a
lot of people and they're really very passionate. But it
looks to me like tickets are not exactly a hot
(03:55):
item out there. Under ten dollars for a seat to
a Penn State football game, even up there where they
put the hobbiy hoys, you know, high above one of
the end zones, about seven stories in the air. That's
not good. You're going to see a lot of empty seats,
which is something to which they are on a custom.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Yeah, I mean you could get a fifty yard line seat,
which would be like the best ticket at Nebraska for
East West Stadium type seat for fifty five bucks. I mean,
you know normally, you know, Jim, how much money those
tickets are worth out a place like Penn State. So
it's one of those games where you could literally be
behind Nebraska's bench on the fifty yard line for fifty
five bucks right now. And so yeah, I do think,
(04:35):
you know, maybe see some Nebraska fans there, but again,
it's so hard to get in there and get a
place to stay and then leaving there after a night game.
They don't generally play night games at Penn State this
late in the year. I'd be curious to know if
they've ever played the night game this late before.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
We don't know.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Well, uh, they've got a lot of talent on offense,
but there Kate tron Allen is They're pretty he's good,
and Singleton is good and Dinkins is good. These are
on offense. I think this would be a great test,
and this young quarterback has played pretty well. But they
don't scare you on offense, like.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
The receiver to guys, the receiver other.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Than other than Dinkins yeah, you're right, they're not. They
don't have the great tight ends that they've had. They
don't scare you on off it. Singleton came into this
season they thought he was maybe the best back in
the Big Ten, and he's not been awesome. They have
a young quarterback who's getting better, but they The one
thing about it is Seawn you could see them turning
the ball over against Nebraska. Uh, you could see a
(05:38):
couple of takeaways for the Husker defense.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
Those backs don't fumble though. I mean, that's the one thing.
I think they have one combined fumble in the year,
so it's got to be through the air. They got
to figure out something with the secondary this week.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
You know, Amma Johnson doesn't either. That's one of the
terrific strengths. That's a big deal.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
I hang on the ball just nine and a half
spread out.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
You're not buying it.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
I don't know about this.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
