Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sports Brief, the Huskar Buzz Edition with Sean Callahan and
Jim Rhoades. Okay, thanks Scott, Let's bring in Shana. We
had the Head Coach Collin Show last night featuring Matt Ruhle.
Apparently he had his cap turned backwards. He's now an
assistant coach, at least his acting like one. And he
had a little bit of a light to shine on
Dylan Royola Shano, but not a lot. What have you
learned about the Riola thing since the big announcement on Monday.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yeah, I just think it's one of those things everyone's
kind of moved on from. And you know, Troy Danen
was on with k TV this week as well. Bill Shammerton,
you know, said it wasn't a surprise at all that
Dylan Royol left. I think, you know, people they're smart
enough to know kind of what was happening. I mean,
the brother moved on, and I know they'll they'll say
(00:44):
that these things weren't linked, but you know, just things
kind of happened to get to this point. I think
Nebraska was ready in anticipating this day. And as Matt
rule said, there's a lot of quarterbacks now that are
very interested because obviously Nebraska is in a position well
they'll be very competitive to bring in another quarterback and
you know we'll see TJ. Latif and kind of where
(01:05):
he fits in this discussion as well. And you know,
it's time, I think is now as a program to
move forward.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
So in essence, what we have with TJ. Latif is
a tryout. He is the man for the next well essentially,
you know, ten days before the bowl game and then
you have two weeks really and then you have spring
practice or the bowl game, I should say then spring practice.
So if he looks really good over the course of
the next ten days and in the bowl game, that
(01:32):
could alter Nebraska's quarterback strategy, could it not.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Yeah, But the issue is the hamstring injury. They've been really, really,
really careful with Latif in Lincoln and you know he's
being kept out of the team drills. They don't want
to overdo it in terms of the running on a
hamstring and having a tweak. So when they get to Vegas,
they will you know, it's it's the game. I mean,
how will he play in Las Vegas? Yeah, if he
(01:57):
goes out there and they pull off an upset win
or play very very good. I mean, Nebraska is that.
I think it's up to sixteen and a half points.
I mean, it's the largest point spread they faced this season.
So there's a lot against TJ. Latief going into this game. Now,
Utah is going to have probably they've had one of
those offensive lineman. They have two of the top five
offensive tackles in college football. One has already opted out,
(02:20):
the other probably will. I mean, they're gonna have some
guys that opt out too, but it's still gonna even
without those players, it's gonna be a very tough game.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
Yeah, and Dan Pierre is the best run pass quarterback
I think in the country today. All right, let's visit
about something that I think is easy to connect, and
that is the hiring of coaches and the luring of players.
Nebraska now has an offensive line coach and an assistant
offensive line coach named Lonnie Teasley who is brought in
here from South Carolina, and yesterday one of his best linemen,
(02:49):
Trovon Baw, entered the transfer portal, or at least his
agents said he's entering the transfer portal. That's the construct, now,
isn't it, Sean You hire somebody for who he brings
with him.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Right, Yeah, there's a huge bonus in that now. I
mean Matt Campbell's bringing people, He's bringing coaches, recruits and
players put them to Iowa State. And you know that
that's the model where you know it used to be
sexy to bring over the NFL guy. Well it's great,
but he can't bring his players with them. And you know,
I think even with g Wade and Rob Orrich, I mean,
(03:22):
you hope that some of these guys have players that
are that are going to follow them here to Nebraska
and and and make the transition easier that Kurt Signetti,
James Madison, the Indiana model, I mean, everyone has noticed
how powerful it can be if you bring the right guys.
No one's saying you bring the whole roster, but just
a few of those players, if they come with the coach,
(03:43):
you know, it could be a big deal. But it's all,
it's all. It doesn't always work out, that's the problem.
And I think everybody expects it to be like Indiana,
and Indiana has kind of been the the one in
a one hundred story that obviously led out to possibly
a national championship, and the deal.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
With Indiana is they don't go for the high price
free agents. They go for the FCS level kids. They
specifically have a list of specifications that the kid has
to meet to get to Indiana. And it's working for them,
maybe that'll work for somebody else. I was also interested
in you're taking on what PJ. Fleck had to say yesterday,
head coach of Minnesota. He says the most exciting and
(04:19):
interesting reality show would be if you put a camera
on the shoulder of a kid in the transfer portal
and just take the video and turn that into a
reality show. He says, one half of the nil deals
are real and the other half are not. What does
he mean by that.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
I think there's a lot of agents that fish for
numbers and then they put those numbers into the heads
of a kid. But then when it comes down to
signing or getting the real number, it might be different.
But the agents do drive a lot of these discussions
to get to drive up the market for players, and
they put numbers like, hey, you know, I've talked to
(04:56):
these teams and we can get you two hundred thousand
dollars more if you go in the portal. We've got
four teams interested and so I do think there's a
lot of that going on, and it really upsets the
coaches when just the power these agents have, and it's
the same thing with coaches though when they're on the
job market, the agents drive up the money. They're doing
it with the players now too, and there's just no
(05:19):
cap and there's no transparency on what these guys do.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
All right, buddy, that's Sean Callahan, kayfabsker info strong man.
As we've said, he has all the information of now
twenty men and you're gonna want to be with us
every morning. So he'll be with us the rest of
this week and then we'll do as needed through the
ball game
