Speaker 1 (00:00):
Right now, we go to Sports Break Oscar bozz Edition,
Sean Callahan Live and like a Rosie.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Okay Shano first day of practice, your impressions, well.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Just the overall look of the team. You know, it's
always interesting to get in there the first day and
you know they look lean. I mean, I think the
new training table. You know, I've talked a lot of
guys and they have access to whatever they want. And
you know, you can get ten steaks a day if
you want ten steaks a day. You can get ten
salmons a day. If you want ten salmon's today. I
(00:31):
mean it's and that's not an exaggeration, by the way.
J Ferrari, the new wrestler, was telling us that to
on our show. And so I think just the physical
look of these guys on top of the weightlifting they do.
You know, it's an impressive looking group. The linemen look
big and trim on both offense and defense. And it's
(00:52):
a year three now from Matt Rule, and I think
what's different about this day one compared to my previous
years is there's a lot not a lot of new
faces that were were that weren't here in the spring
because of all the early enrollees. You know, all those
guys are already here, and then there are no There
weren't any walk ons. They didn't sign a single walk
on this year because of the roster rules that they
(01:15):
have to battle, So there was only about ten new
players that joined this roster that weren't already here in
the spring. So it's kind of just a business as
usual day one.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Do you really believe there is a competition for Elijah Pritchett.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Elijah Pritchett was bought and paid for to come in
here and start. This notion that there's a competition for
his spot, I don't believe it. What do you think?
Speaker 3 (01:37):
No, I mean, he's making over a million dollars as
a left tackle, so he started twelve games for Alabama
last year, so it it. I would be shocked, you know,
if you know. But on the other side, I mean,
Williams win Airy is in a similar financial category and
he's probably not going to start this year for Nebraska.
(01:58):
But I do think Pritchett is the guy at left tackle. Jim,
I think four of the five spots are probably locked
in right now. I mean Pritchett, left Latowski at left guard,
Justin Evans at center, rock O Spiller at right guard,
and then it's really the battle is that right tackle
between Tyler Knack, Teddy Prohoska, and Gunner Getula. Those are
(02:19):
the three guys that will battle for that that right tackle.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Spot in the mix somewhere. But he's hurts still, those
still hurt.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
He's limited them in terms of how he's practicing right now.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
What about the overall depth of the offensive line. You're
gonna have guys that are gonna get hurt. Where is
the depth past those five guys you talked about.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Well, they have eight. They have eight really when you
go to Corcoran at that point, So they have eight
players that have played and started Division one major college football,
and I think it's pretty impressive. When I mean to
have that many on one roster, it's not easy to do.
So I think the depth as good as it's been.
And behind that there is this group of younger players
(03:03):
like Gibson Pile and Grant Bricks and you know down
the line, Sam Sledge, Jason Matchacheck. They've got a good
group of players for the future. But those top eight
will be the focus that will be out there playing
this year. And that's a good number because there is
versatility with that group in terms of players that can
(03:25):
play guard and tackle and in different spots on that
old line.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
That's great. That's huge more depth than I think we've
had in recent seasons. And I think Seana could say
the same, uh for the D line just in terms
of pure numbers. And we've got some unproven players, but
we know they're capable and they can stay fresh with
the numbers in place ra helpful.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Yeah, you really hope that Keona Davis, who looked incredible
just eyeball test yesterday, makes a big jump and Tyler
van poppol Riley van Pop excuse me, makes a big
jump in their snap counts and their production. They really
need williams Henery, who again looks as impressive physically as
any player though, to make a jump and give them
(04:13):
quality stats. Elijah Judy Campbell n Hard. I mean, yeah,
they have a solid core, uh you know, six seven
guys there to play those three D D line spots
and then the edge, which is the jack they call it.
I mean they've got three guys that play that jack
with the Sam McCullough and mcgahey and you know down
the line at Choa, it's it's Newton. Yeah, there's there's
(04:37):
a good group right there in the linebackers too. I mean,
so I do think this defense, as long as they
get the play they need from that defensive line, has
a lot to work with this year.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
It's going to be a challenge. You take three guys Butler,
len Hart and hutt Macker I'm sorry, Butler, Robinson and
hut Maker out of there. They were very, very consistent,
and they were old. You know, this is one of
the things that is is a little bit mislaw. I
think lost in the calculation. You miscalculate how valuable experience
and age is. I mean, Robinson was an old guy
(05:09):
for a college football player, and you can't replace that
physically mentally.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
The example I'll give on that is go back to
seven when Character and Stu Bradley and j Moore graduated.
Look at the drop the defense took that year for
Nebraska and seven when they lost three NFL players on
the front, and it's hard to replace. You're right, especially
when you're talking about three fifths six year type.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
Players and there's sad news out of Big Red. I'm said, yes,
that's that Keith Mann announced that all Media Guys will
now be digital only. One of the great traditions is that, yeah, well.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
My annual text from you to make sure I pick
up the media guy.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Yeah, I gotta tell you, you know, it's just another
just another gigantic beam falling from this burning building right Nebraska,
word picture right there. We're all watching this thing come
crashing down. I can't spend my three hours at Benamartin
library and swimming that thing anymore.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Like I sean. Thanks. We'll check back, of course tomorrow
on every day with a buzz
