Speaker 1 (00:00):
Go to sports Bree the Husker buzz Edision with our
big Red insider Sean Callayan live in Lincoln, Rosie.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Okay, thanks to Sandler. Well Seana, we have some heads
rolling down the steps at the time Osburne Performance Center.
Starting with John Butler's out, He goes he wasn't even
here for a spring practice.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Well, no, yeah, Butler was. He got here July July
fourth of twenty twenty four.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Uh yeah, that's twenty twenty four. I thought it was
last Okay, so he was here, you know, for a few,
you know, for you know, basically two seasons.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Yeah, yeah, two full seasons. He replaced Evan Cooper as
secondary coach and was a defensive coordinator for the bowl
game when Tony White left for Florida State. But yeah,
it just existing click. I mean, you know, they didn't
force a lot of punts. They obviously struggled against the run,
giving up nearly five yards per carry on the season.
(00:53):
I believe it was I mean a number of ten
plus yard runs and twenty and fifteen plus yard runs
was very large too when you when you sample size
just the number of plays they played per game. So
I think things in general upfront weren't working, especially down
the stretch Iowa, Penn State, and you could even say
usc the way the Trojans ran the ball, they had
(01:15):
ten or runs of ten plus yards And you know,
was it a personnel thing? Was it a scheme thing?
I think that's really debatable at this point right now. Well,
I was able to be a better personnel.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
I was alarmed at Cincinnati. You know, they ran for
two hundred and two yards in the opener.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
Most of it was quarterback running.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Yeah, a real twelve. The other guy that got run
out of yesterday is Troy Vincent. This was the player
personnel director. How important was he?
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Ye had not somebody that was really heavily involved in
like the actual main operation or recruiting. I mean as
far as me writing his name down and anything I've done,
you know, I never did. So it wasn't somebody like
just his name is probably what is most significant. His
dad is Troy Vinson's senior number two in charge of
the NFL, behind Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Well, then he'll have no trouble finding another job. Okay,
let's visit just a second about Matt Rules staff. And
I think this is a concern the Nebraska fans have now,
Remember he was run out of Carolina and had a
lot of time on his hands in that stretch between
the time he was coaching the Panthers and hired by Nebraska.
Usually a coach spends that time assembling a staff. Thoughtfully,
(02:29):
if you have to assemble a staff in a very
short period of time, most head coaches take the guys
that are with him now and move him to the
new place. That way, they don't have to do it.
In the case of Matt Rule, he didn't have that luxury.
He had a lot of time. He's looking at a
third defensive coordinator in three seasons. He's already been through two. Well,
he's into his second offensive coordinator. He's into his second
(02:50):
special teams coordinator. We have other staffers that have come
and gone. People are wondering if he knows how to
assemble a staff.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
It's it's a fair point. And I also think it
just speaks to the volatility of the game. I mean
the days of what we were used to many years ago,
with the continuity. This is not the norm. I mean
what what Iowa has with Phil Parker, that's not the norm.
You'd love it to be. But there's so much more
money now in the game and pressure and coaching shelve.
(03:22):
Lives of head coaches especially is shorter, and you know,
so you see more staff movement. And I don't think
Matt Rule could have just shut her down after Iowa's
we're good with what we got, We're moving forward to
next year. I mean, I think there were some issues
that you know, he didn't like with what he was
seeing and and does that mean they did so three
(03:42):
three five? Does that does that mean you know, what
does he want in this next defensive coordator? I think
is probably the most valid point. And you know, but Butler,
I'm not sure if he was ever meant to be
the guy. But he was here last year, right place,
right time, did a great job for the bowl game,
but it just didn't work. It never really, you know,
their past. Their Their leading sack guy this year was
(04:04):
two and a half sacks on the team and they
lost a lot of guys. So princeivlle Uman Yellen was
one of the guys they lost. He had six and
a half sacks this year at Old Miss. So I
think they lack some things. They lack development up front
for whatever reason. And they lacked some talent. I mean,
I think they didn't have a lot of guys that
(04:25):
could play at the Big ten level on the defensive front.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
The challenge, of course becomes, we got to start evaluating
people in the portal because chances are an incoming high
school kids not going to be able to play a
lot of snaps against the big ten. So you got
to go into the portal, Well, do you get the
player first of the coach first? And if they get
a defensive coordinator, how much input are they going to
have on the personnel up front?
Speaker 3 (04:48):
And sure, yeah, the cordator higher will be big and
you just will he bringing the guys with them your
your right gym on that.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Do you think do you see any more's changes coming
on the staff?
Speaker 3 (05:00):
I think you could, and it might be after the
Bowl in some cases, I don't know if any other
ones at this exact moment would makes sense, but you
might see a guy move on, you know, after the
Bowl game too, with their contracts and how it plays out.
Signing day is today or tomorrow, and I think we
need to get through signing day. We're going to hear
(05:20):
from Matt Ruhle on Wednesday morning, at eleven, So that
will be a big point that he can address that.
But a lot of guy at times, guys that are
getting fired don't get fired, They just kind of leave organically,
and what happened with Butler is not necessarily how it
usually plays out. Or you just outright make a.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Move on a guy, right all right, Sean, We'll be
in touch always with the buzz. Sean Callahan, our Husker
insider here on campab's morning News
