Speaker 1 (00:00):
At your service. On this Friday morning, we go on
to Sports Brief Now the Husker Buzz Keys to the
Game edition with our Big Red Insider Sean Callahan Live
and Lincoln Rosie.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Keys to the Game, shot out, don't get injured anything else.

Speaker 3 (00:14):
Yeah, I think it's the key is the energy level
and playing with the standard and where this team needs
to be. You know, two weeks in a row, it's
when his last time, two weeks in a row, Nebraska's
kind of put together a game like we saw last
week and do it again this week. You know, they
haven't hadded back to back shutout since then, I think
in nineteen ninety seven. I mean that that should be

(00:34):
a goal going to say let's get a shutout. I mean,
let's get let's get one for the first time. But
the run defense, you know, Houston Christian will want to
run the ball at Nebraska and that and that will
be I think a good challenge. I mean, they're averaging
two hundred and twenty eight rushing yards per game. They've
got a capable tailback as well, and so I do

(00:54):
think the run defense needs to take a step forward
this week. Knowing what you have and also the running
game on offense. You know, they're okay with how the
old line is run blocked, but I think they would
like to see better play from that group in this game.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Yeah, this is an interesting dynamic for this one because
you're thinking, all right, this is the game where you
want to get a bunch of running backs in there,
take the load off Riola. Don't have him stand in
the pocket and all of that get drilled on one
of those mad dog blitzes. You don't want that. But
at the same time, here's a chance for Royola to
really pad his stats. And that's that's important in the

(01:30):
NIL era because the big numbers drive clicks and drive
Internet and drive social media level you know, attention. So
you know you're at you're sort of on the horns
of a dilemma what you want to do with your
best players, because really, this is a game where you
want to run the ball, make it short and get
off the field.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Yeah and yeah, I think there's this sentiment within the
program with Matt Ruhl and that Dylan Royola doesn't he
gets kind of disrespected nationally. I mean whatever, whatever reason,
whether it was recruiting ranking, the Mahomes stuff, you know,
last year seven and five record as a freshman. It
was good but not great.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
The comments from Behio State and Georgia.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
So yeah, he's got a lot of I don't know,
detractors or you know this. You know, you see these
quarterback lists, like top twenty five quarterbacks in a country
were put out by CBS. He's not on that list,
and he is one of the top twenties. I mean,
I believe that, I truly believe he is that type
of quarterback and he should be on a list like that,
But he doesn't get that kind of respect yet. And
so I do think Matt Ruhle recognizes that, Hey, for

(02:30):
this ship to rise and everybody to go up, Dylan's
a big part of it. And yeah, I wouldn't be
surprised if we see another three hundred yard passing day
for him, and he's on a pace to break all
the single season records. The school record for touchdown passes
remains twenty six, that's Zach Taylor and he's got six
right now. The completion percentage record is seventy one. He's
at seventy eight right now. The school passing records like

(02:52):
around thirty six hundred yards and he's got a pretty
good chance. I think to go after that record this
year as well. One might be tough because Joe Ganz
had a five hundred yard game in there in some
other big days. But you know, there's a lot that
could happen this year with Dylan Roola.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Yeah, And I think rather than detractors, Sean, I think
what you're saying is there are skeptics out there. They're
waiting for Dylan Rayola to lead Nebraska to a win
over a good team Illinois. Last year was a big opportunity,
and he made a couple of great throws, and he
had a couple of really bad throws, and that was

(03:29):
at a big stage against a good team. So I
think it's his coming out party. Could be Michigan. It'll
be a two thirty CBS national telecast against a name
opponent that will strike you. And if Dylan can just
say all right, hey, you know, I don't care what
people think of me. I'll show you in the Michigan.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Game, It'll all be good, no doubt, and get through
this Saturday and then you've got a big one next
week at two thirty. And you know, but three and
ohs three to O and Nebraska's have been three to
oh to start a season very often in this game
conference era. So they're going to be in a great
spot if they take care of business tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Let me ask you about a couple of other games tomorrow.
The people of Iowa have about had it with this offense.
I mean they really have. This is a two million
dollar quarterback and he looks like two cents. What is
going on over there? What is the problem? Why can't
they move the football?

Speaker 3 (04:23):
Did the receivers? They don't have elite receiver play, They
don't have the tight ends they used to have, and
their own line is not as elite as it used
to be. But he still has a formula that wins
them seven to nine games. It's not a formula that
people tend to enjoy, you know. It's other than beating Nebraska.
You could argue that if Kirk Farrence is not beating
Nebraska like he has the last seven eight years, at

(04:45):
the end of the year, his whole tenure is defined differently.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
There.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Yes, because that final win on Black Friday bumps them
up to a better bowl game. Everyone's happy, you know,
and that is kind of solidified the end of his career.
By owning Nebraska. If Nebraska winning some of those games,
the conversation would be interesting. In my opinion.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
At Iowa City, he might not even still be there.
But I know somebody who owns a hotel in Iowa City, Okay,
and their attitude is, we won't even get people to
come in for the game unless they complete a forward pass.
They cannot complete a forward pass over there consistently. That's
a little bit facetious. But this offense is beneath bad.

(05:27):
It's just it's non existent.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
You know what's interesting about that, guys, As this has
been I think when we were all texting last Saturday,
it's like twenty five years the same thing, and you thought, Okay,
here's an upgraded quarterback. Brian Farrens is going it's the
same offense, same thing, It's the same, it's the same.
And this is this is hard to believe that they

(05:50):
can get players good enough to win them seven or
eight games. If you watch Mark Gronowski when he was
in South Dakota Staten, he was a good quarter back,
an extremely productive quarterback. He threw for over ten thousand
yards in leading an FCS team to national championships, and
yet all of that is still in Brookings, Okay, it's

(06:12):
not in Iowa City anymore.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
It's got to be the program. It can't be.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
Him Sean About a minute here, I got to ask
you because others are noticing, Uh, there is not an
orr after the name a gunner Goatula at left offensive
tackle anymore. So what he Pritchett apparently is not making
any progress?

Speaker 3 (06:35):
Yeah, I don't know a million, right, And these are
the tough decisions and conversations you're gonna have to have now.
Every year in college football you go all in and
look if you just had a pro scout come to
Nebraska's practice and looked at players. Pritchet's the best looking
guy and arguably the best prospect on the team. But
it hasn't equated day to day as far as practice

(06:57):
and what you need. And so they've got him number
two or three, however you want to care.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
They got him by They got him by third behind
the gatol On course.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
That's a tough deal. And Gatula is not as tall,
doesn't have as long as arms. It's pretch it, it
doesn't have near the frame. But he's done his job
at a highly consistent level. And give him credit, and
I think, and I.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
Think he plays for the end. I really I do too, Hey, Sean.
