Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now time for a sports brief on Big Red Radio.
I'm Scott Vorhees and for Gary Sadelmeier. N Jim Rose
welcoming from Lincoln before he heads out to Maryland. Sean
Callahan eleven ten Kfab Husker Insider with the Husker Buzz, Sean,
good morning, Good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
He had Scott the team actually in Bethesda, mary Maryland
as well. They got him last night and that's where
they're staying and they'll have a practice out here today.
And kind of a new approach a lot of Big
ten teams have taken this year, Scott with travel with
some of these longer trips. I know, Nebraska I think
initially had thought this would be an eleven am game,

(00:40):
and you know, on a deal like that, they don't
get to their hotel the six, seven, eight o'clock at night,
and it just felt like, you know what, we want
the extra time to kind of mentally and physically be
prepared to play early. And then the game got announced
as a two thirty, so they kept the schedule. I
know that they had originally had planned, but you're seeing
the whole Big Ten do that this year with any
kind kind of trip of length, that's you know, the

(01:02):
three hour plus or in some of these teams cases
five plus hours. They're going out a day earlier just
to kind of acclimate and get ready to go. So
the Huskers are in Maryland ready to ready to go
for tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Well, plus they get to stay in hotel rooms. As
Matt Ruhle told us yesterday, all of our guys are.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Really really excited to get in the hotel and spend
two nights together and you know, chill and at the
same time go work for a common goal.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
We've been comparing that to like a fifth grade birthday
party at a hotel here. But you know, this looks
like this team is really having fun. The one guy
who's maybe not with them. What's the situation on Malcolm Hertzog.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
No, he's battling and the injury, and they've been real
discreet about what it is publicly, so I don't want
to speculate, but yeah, he's been out. You know, I
think there's a thought now in a lot of people's
minds that, hey, if this continues, he's only played in
two games, he could take a four game red shirt
this year and play later in the year. So we'll
see how they play that with Malcolm, but probably not traveling.

(02:05):
You're restricted to seventy four players, so you know you
can get a waiver to take seniors. So when Matt
Rule made it sound it may not be smart to travel,
you know, whatever kind of injury you might be battling.
So Rex Guthrie had been back there starting. Donovan Jones
plays one of those corners while Cia right moves into
a nickel with Andrew Marshall and Deshaun Singleton. That's kind

(02:28):
of been the group that they've rolled out with lately
in their secondary.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
Yeah, last week, whether it was a factor with that
wind and heat really in Lincoln tomorrow, potential for rain
in Bethesda.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Right, Yeah, just some light rain. But they've been preparing
for live practice all week in different situations and whatnot.
But wet ball and that rule said, I'd rather have
a little bit of rain and wind. I mean last
week really was you know, made it tough for both
teams as nearly all of the points came with the

(03:01):
win behind you. You just you just didn't see a
whole lot of offense happening going into the win. So
I don't think it's going to be like we saw
last week, Thank god, but I do think they're prepared
for a drizzle or a lighter rain. I'm I'm not
expecting a hurricane, monsoon or anything like that. But last
time we were at Maryland actually in twenty nineteen, it

(03:21):
did rain for that game as well.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Well, when do we I trying to remember if we
won that game twenty nineteen. We probably didn't.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
No, they did. That was okay with Mike Loxley's first season,
and that they went on the road and actually dominated Maryland.
And it was, you know, Scott Frost that that was
the week after he got an he got a contract extension,
if you remember in twenty nineteen, that was the first
game after the big contract extension.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
Right, And is it true that with the win last week,
Matt Rules now tied Scott Frost for most wins as
a Nebraska head coach. Yeah, yeah, that's a sobering Uh yeah,
all right, let's just look ahead on this one.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Here.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
We've got Nebraska Maryland tomorrow afternoon, two thirty Omaha. Kick
Sean Callahan, what are your keys to the game?

Speaker 2 (04:09):
I was wondering, we're the keys where? But yeah, the
keys for Nebraska Scott their offensive line, protecting Dylan Ryola.
I think the strength of Maryland is their front four.
They've got a couple of true freshmen that they'll start,
and they've disrupted quarterbacks. I mean, they're starting front four
has fifty eight quarterback pressure plays this year over five games,

(04:32):
meaning hits, sacks, hurries, and they will get after Dylan.
They don't even need to blitz a lot. They can
do it with just those four. So that's the matchup
to watch. And then the other thing for Nebraska, you know,
can they disrupt the true freshman quarterback Malik Washington from Maryland?
Maryland leads the country or they're one of the nation's
leaders and drop passes. They have twenty one drops as well.

(04:54):
I just think John Butler, I'm sure has tried to,
you know, come up with a plan and a scheme
to get the true freshman off balance. They now have
five games of film to watch him, study him a
little bit. This is not a running team either Maryland.
They average under one hundred rushing yards a game. Washington
also not a runner. So there's a lot of things
about this matchup that really match up with Nebraska's defense

(05:19):
in terms of Nebraska's strength.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
What's your take on this Sean as Royola has gotten
in trouble as he's hung out in the pocket or
tried to scramble. Is it the lack of blocking for him?
Is he hanging on to the ball too long? Is
he hanging on to the ball too long because receivers
are covered. What's going on there?

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Yeah, I think it's a little bit of everything. And
I know it's an easy answer there. But one of
the things Nebraska might have extra people protecting tight ends
and back So when you do that, that's less people
out on the route trees and you might only have
three people out and there could be six people guarding three.
So sometimes people aren't just open or just not there.

(05:56):
Sometimes Dell might be missing it. I mean, there's a
lot of things on these plays. But yeah, when you
hold the ball for over four seconds, that's not a
good thing. I mean, a game of football is not
meant for the quarterback to hold over four seconds in
the pocket. You want him to get rid of it,
you know, in a probably a two and a half
second count where it's one, two, three, throw and you

(06:18):
get it out pretty quick. So hopefully they can get
the ball out of Dylan's hands. Quicker and I think
they will have a plan in this game to do
that because of the pass rush that Maryland's going to
bring at him.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
Are you going to be able to join Emory for
a live Husker bus this afternoon and do some game Contentionis.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
That is the plan? Okay, travel, We got a flat
Omahan travel on a flight into DC, and the plan
is to join Emory and obviously the Husker online show
later tonight at six o'clock.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
Absolutely right here on Big Red Radio. Shawn, Safe travels
and enjoy the game.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Thank you, Scott, appreciate it.
