Speaker 1 (00:00):
On to Sports Break Huscar Buzz edition with our Husker
insider Sean Callahan. I have been link on ahead of
the big game tomorrow Scott before he is in for
Rosie on Sports.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Break Sewn Scheming and fighting. That's kind of what the
coach has been talking about this week. Where do you
see the vibe of this team in terms of taking
on the fight that Northwestern represents before Tomorrow's game.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Yeah, that's the thing. Northwestern is one of several five
and two teams in the Big Ten right now. I mean,
so there's a lot of teams in the same boat
where they can take their season one of two ways
Saturday and then they're coming in wanting to get this win.
And they're going to test Nebraska's run defense. They they're
going to run the ball about forty times in this game.
They average four yards per carry after contacts, so they
(00:45):
get a lot of extra leaky yards as both Palini
once referred to them as. So the tackling's got to
be sound. Upfront's got to be sound. But they're not
a big throwing team. So I think the key if
you can get them in there and he's throwing downs,
the advantage flips to Nebraska, but they don't want to
be in that situation. They've been very good at getting
(01:05):
themselves in a lot of third and shorts, and it
will be a unique test for the Black Shirts.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Yeah, but it comes by if Northwestern pops off a
long run, as we saw a Minnesota do last week,
a long play. It comes down to being able to
just being able to collect yourself and go all right,
one play, let's try and get back out here. But
to see the same thing happen over and over again.
And now we're looking at the offense here where quarterbacks
(01:32):
holding onto the ball, people aren't blocking form, receivers aren't
getting open, We're not changing our scheme to more running
or more quick passes. That's the kind of scheme that
Husker fans I think will really be looking at tomorrow.
And I know coach rules addressed it. What have they
done in practice to be able to address it?
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Yeah, I know. It's been an intense week behind the
scenes with the film sessions, the player meetings, the coaching,
the extra work the coaches have done with the players.
I mean, there's been a lot that's gone on, you know,
from what we've heard, and you know, the offense in general.
I think getting the ball out of Dylan Royal's hand
(02:12):
quickly has to be a huge emphasis in this game.
He can't. You know, Northwestern has some good edge rushers too,
so you can't expect him to run around back there
and you know, do what he tried to do last week.
This is not going to work this week. The balance
again has to be there. Emma Johnson not getting the ball.
He only had thirteen carries last week in that game.
(02:34):
I mean, he needs to be more involved in this offense.
He needs to be over twenty carries for Nebraska to
win Big ten games where you know the points spreads
are under a touchdown or you know, close spreads like
we're going to get every week. Emma Johnson has to
have the ball over twenty carries. I mean, that's how
they beat Cincinnati, that's how they've won a lot of
(02:56):
these other games that they've won this year. So what
we saw last week with only thirteen carries for the
Big Tens leading rusher by the way, that will go
a long way and kind of helping a lot of
other things around.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
Dean Rayola, Yeohn, go ahead, Gary, Well, just question Sean.
I you know, you know, I bled the big Red
and I devoutly hope for a win tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
I don't want to hear a butt out of you
right now.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Here's the deal I'm trying to imagine. I'm looking at
think comparing these two teams and their records. What possesses
the oddsmakers to make Nebraska seven and a half point
favorite in this game home field? I guess anything else.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
They have a big edge at receiver. I mean, if
Nebraska's written they're going to run that shell defense. They're
not going to you know, you know, kind of like
what Cincinnati did, So there'll be a lot of short
throws in Rayola has proven he can hit those throws.
But Nebraska does have better players across the board. I
mean his matchup, there's no doubt about it. Just a
matter of the game plan and executing it. And I
(03:59):
mean the general you always have better roster than Northwestern,
and Northwestern figures out ways to win a lot of
these types of games. And maybe Penn State guys on
the road. They got James Franklin fired. We think about
what they've done. That's what I MEANLA win the impressive
win too.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
They lost to Tulane the season opener, and they lost
at Oregon by twenty points. But other than that, they've
ripped off four straight, including pens. I mean, I just, Sean,
what else do you see? This thing could go sideways?
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Those vaunted keys to the game, Sean, what else do
you see?
Speaker 3 (04:34):
They get the ball out, Emma Johnson touches, the run
fits and angles on defense. Teams are gonna kind of
spread Nebraska out defensively and put them in these compromise positions.
And the edge play what teams have been doing, and
John Butler talked about they run those outside zone run
plays where it really requires edge discipline and if one
(04:56):
guy makes a wrong angle or does something wrong with
their run fit, all of a sudden, it's a huge play.
Michigan did it, Minnesota did it. So that's expect outside
zone and guess who does that late in the year, Iowa, Iowa.
That's like their bread and butter play. So Nebraska's got
to get that cleaned up too, because they're going to
see a lot of it in this game.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
We got to get Gary back, another Husker faithful, come on,
Big Red and seany what do you mean get me back?
I don't like what I'm hearing out of you. Well,
I'm just hearing. I'm hearing butts. I don't want to
hear about your butt. Sean with Emory Songer with the
game picks today at five oh five, Right, Sean, you'll
have your pick with Emory, right.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Yes, sir, I'll have a prediction this afternoon at five
o five and the Dodgers.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
You got the Dodgers, I assume.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Yeah, it's been the longest week of my life having
to wait it like eight days for this game.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
And the Husker Online show at six right here on
Big Red Radio. Thanks Sean.
