Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sean Callahan's on with the Husker Buzz every morning at
six forty eight, except this morning. He was in the
air at six forty eight on his way to stay
at college. Pennsylvania's on a layover in Chicago and joins
us now. Sean, good morning, everything.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Good, Yeah, good morning, early, good travel so far. No weather,
so that's always. It's going to rain, I think in
the morning tomorrow and stay college, but it's going to
stay away for the game. Let's getting on the grass surface.
We're not going to be deal rain during the game
or anything.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
And and thirties I guess upper thirties probably, so it
should be decent football weather with no no rain, rain,
no college students. Yeah, what about that? What do we
know about their crowd tomorrow night?
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Sean, Well, it's interesting. Yeah, you mentioned the student break
begins today. They're gone for a week, so kids could
stick around. The dorms are open through Saturday. They can
stay there for the game if they want. This is
the latest night game in terms of on the calendar
Penn States ever played at home. To put it in perspective,
their previous latest night game was a year ago. It
(01:02):
was a November ninth, so they've never had a night
game this deep endo November. It's a really hard place
to get into from Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, wherever you're driving
in from, and that night, it's really hard to drive
out there late after a game. We did in two
thousand and two after the Nebraska game and I'll never
forget to drive back to Harrisburg. It was miserable. So
(01:22):
you just wonder how many of our fan base are
going to want to deal with that colder night traffic
getting home late. Already, pay about four or five hundred
bucks a night to stay in a hotel in State College.
I mean, it's you would think that you're staying at
at Ritz Carlton. It's a hamp and in for about
five hundred bucks to night. I mean it's it's a
unique place to get a hotel room.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Is your layover in Buenos Aires or Shanghai. All right, Sean,
let's get into the keys of the game. What do
we got?
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Well, that biggest key I think for Nebraska is the
run defense. You know, can can can they stand up
and slow down Nick Singleton and k Tron Alley. I mean,
I think those two guys are the key to this
Penn State offense. Ethan Grunkmeyer not a real big passing threat,
so I'm not worried about that. How will John Butler
(02:10):
adjust the scheme? TJ Latiff? What do you put on
his plate? He looked out standing in week one at UCLA?
What do you build upon off that? And and you
know you're gonna deal with some adversity, whether it's crowd noise,
whether it's colder conditions, hard hits. How will Latif handle
the adversity? I think that's the other biggest key for
(02:33):
this game for Nebraska.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
They're both going to try to basically do the same thing, right,
you know, slow down the other team's run game. That'll
be the key for each one of these teams. I
think the difference from what I've gathered John their quarterback
is not a statue, but he's not as quick as
Latif is, so that could be the difference, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
He's not. I mean he can move a little bit,
but not in terms of like mobile quarterbacks that Nebraska
is seen this year. Of the ten qbs or eleven
we've seen, he probably ranks towards the bottom. He's not
a real threat to break a big play. So they
can play that differently. Again, though, they're not going to
put a lot of high risk situations on grunk Meyer
(03:15):
because he's a true freshman, So his throws will be
roll out. It's a little dump out passes to the
tight end or the running back. You're not going to
see him throw it deep down the field, especially against
this Nebraska secondary, which has proven that they are the
real deal. I mean, the USC game, I know's got
a lot of people's attention in the Big Ten, the
way they shut down like kay Lemon, who's one of
(03:35):
the best receivers in the country, and they've done that
all year, every year, every week. So I don't expect
a lot of big downfield shots. Probably a lot of
underneath throws that they'll disguise as run plays and they
roll out the quarterback and try to dump it out
and keep drives going. It's gonna be one of those games.
They could be, you know, under three hours if it
plays rut both sides of the ball.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Sean. I say this as a Huskar fan, and I
can't be the only one seeing this. The reason the
teams have not been throwing the ball over the field
is because they've been running the ball up and down
the field against us, bad schemes, bad tackling players, not
in the right position. And I've seen too many instances
the last couple of years where a non mobile backup
quarterback looks like herschel Walker out there against our defense.
(04:20):
Am I the only one seeing this?
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Yeah? You say that, though, But Nebraska is still they'll
run defense one hundred and sixty whatever yards a game.
It's it's not good, not great, but they've been okay.
I think it's those runs from the quarterback on like
third and eleven. How many times has the mobile quarterback
been able to run for the first down. That's what's
killed us. A lot of these times where you get
him on these third downs and then all of a sudden,
(04:43):
the quarterback's able to run for a long gain. And
Nico was a unique deal because I think Nico, the
way he ran, he'd do that to everybody. I mean,
but you know, you also got a concussion. So if
you want to run your quarterback like UCLA did and
get him a concussion and play a game with a concussion,
that's on you. I mean. John Butler said that these
teams are running high school offenses because that's all they
(05:05):
can do running the quarterback at Nebraska. But yeah, I
don't think that will be the case. It'll be more
the tailback. It will be more like the Michian game
when they had Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall the way
they ran him at Nebraska.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
So the week off we all like because it gives
you a chance to heal up and get your legs
back onto you. Is this Nebraska roster all healthy or
are there a couple of players we're concerned about.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Yeah, if you guys should be back to Sam McCullough
practice all week, you'll get Dawson Merritt back. So that's
big for the front seven of the defense. Rocko Spindler's hand,
two more weeks on that deal. You know, he just
had tape on his finger and I saw him the
other day. So I don't know if you'll cast that
up for Saturday, but I think yeah, the extra week,
(05:52):
especially this time of the year. Remember they played six
straight weeks in a row in the conference. That's a
physical toll when three of those six are row trips
in there too.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
Wait, last question, John, who do you think is playing
for more Tomorrow night? On the season.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Oh, that's a great question. I would. I mean there's
two sides too, because I think Latif's playing for a
lot right now to make a statement, to win the
job or make a shot to be the quarterback here.
But for Penn State, they want to make a bowl game.
It's it's big for them still to salvage this crap
sandwich of a season. And if they can beat Nebraska
(06:30):
and beat Rutgers, they're going to play in the pen
Stright Bowl probably, So I do think there's some momentum
now for those players to get to six wins and
Nebraska's at seven, and you know they can get to
eight or nine, which'd be great. But I still think
Penn State right now is probably playing for more to
see even try to get boiled.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Crap sandwich is apt because if you look at it,
you know, you put the schedule three wins, sex losses,
three wins, that's a sandwich, right.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
Yeah, they didn't get our coach. You know, it's a
bad deal for Penn State.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
On a thanks man, and uh you'll be He'll be
back with us tonight, of course with the Husker Online
Show at six news radio eleven ten k F A B.
