Speaker 1 (00:00):
Friday addition, KMA Baby's Morning News, we go to sports
Breath and a special Husker Buzz updated edition with Sean Callahan,
our Big Red Insider live in like Scott.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Shawn Is coach Matt Ruhle, Okay, he was out of
the College World Series last week flipping burgers.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
Yeah, he actually didn't attend the game, but yeah, he
took part in the Omaha Steak Smashburger competition. I had
the tough drawing to go against him, and we held
our own. But obviously you're not beating Matt Ruhling a deal.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Like that, and he was out there posing for pictures
with fans and having a great time out there. It's
great to see the coach and some of these players
going around and being so involved in the community. It
would have been hard to see like coach bo Palini,
for example, out there doing something like that. You think
you're going to beat me in a burger flipping content.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
We've done yout well.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
We not a terrible time right now with those who
have committed to and then in one case we had
a defensive back de commit from Nebraska. What's the latest
on all these commits?

Speaker 3 (00:58):
Sean, Yeah, I mean I think a week from now,
we'll be having a much different conversation kind of where
things are at. So recruiting this weekend is the last
weekend you can bring visitors in for two and a
half months, and it's kind of a mad dash this
weekend for a lot of schools to finish things up,
and recruiting now is so different that it used to

(01:20):
be because of the rev share. Rev share means the
schools are going to start paying these players directly. Nebraska
football will roughly have around fifteen million dollars internally to
kind of build the rosters with, along with whatever they
can drum up as legitimate nil. So with your money
and how you manage the roster, there has to be

(01:41):
some strategy of what you want to spend on high
school players and maybe what you want to spend on
transfer portal players, and obviously then your current players the
retention value of it. So with the recruiting class, you're
trying to find some players that you know are going
to be good roster editions that aren't going to cost
you a lot of REP share, that you feel like
you and obviously you have to almost find you know

(02:02):
a handful of guys that you're going to invest in
almost like an NFL draft class. So that's the job
of the new GM Pat Stewart. They've got a lot
of those guys coming in this weekend, They've had a
lot of them come in last weekend, and many of
those dominoes will begin to fall as the spot still
everywhere in the money fills. I mean a lot, a
lot of these kids aren't going to have the luxury
to wait out recruiting deep into the season because the

(02:25):
money that schools have for particular spots is going to
be going to be gone if somebody else takes that spot.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Well, there are a lot of Husker fans that if
they see someone who was either who has already visited
here or was scheduled to visit here and then they
end up committing to a different school and their names
are things like Tank or Hooey White from Honolulu or
something like that, you know, they Husker fans look at
this and go, man, we didn't get the Tank. He's
an edge rusher from Irvine, California, and his name is Tank.

(02:56):
He must be awesome. We didn't get him. What happened
was some of these guys that already visited here and
ended up committing someplace else.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
Well, they've gotten a couple offensive linemen and you know
that they already landed two of them, and so some
of the other linemen they had they move on from
at that point because they only have limited spots. They're
only going to take like fifteen kids in this class,
and you know, so they'll get there pretty quickly once
they begin to fill. But yeah, you'll you'll see like
Ryan Merritt from Miami, Old Miss Nebraska beat Old Miss

(03:29):
for one of the guys. Well then Old Miss went
all in the land Ryan Merritt. They were kind of
in on a couple of the same players. So there's
a lot of that that goes on. But yeah, CJ.
Brown now decommitted. He had been visiting places all year
and he's a good player, obviously four star corner and
you know he's from Florida and the Gators came in
and you know in Florida State was on him and

(03:52):
he switched. But that's gonna happen. I mean, there's still
and you know, Nebraska is trying to flip a couple
of kids as well. That the visitor that were commits
to others schools, they had a Florida State visitor in
this week that's committed to Florida State, and so you
know they're trying to recruit a kid this year. One
of their higher profile guys is actually from Sweden, Valdensonier,

(04:12):
a defensive lineman, and they're in a battle there with
Florida as well. So yeah, there it's coming together. And
I would say by July four of the.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
Comment from that kid, he's also a musician, that kid Sean, right,
and a chef, the kid from Sweden. Yeah, all right, sorry.
You know, the I known of money changes everything and
it helps a little, but the Riolas here, but it's
still it's hard to get those Simon kids away from
the West Coast.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
Isn't it. Yeah, you have to have kind of the
culture and you know, the in place. And Nebraska had
one yesterday at camp a kid that's going to be
a sophomore. But he's from Provo, Utah, and he's got
a buyu offer and you know he's want of top
receivers coming up in Utah. But with the Riolas here,
they have a good Polynesian back They've they've added two

(05:08):
of the top Hawaii players in the state the last
two recruiting classes on the offensive line. Houston Canaina Torres
and Preston Talmua are both on the roster. So they've
actually had as much success with the Polynesian recruiting as
we've seen in a while. But you know, you're not
a West Coast I mean a lot of those kids

(05:29):
stay on the West Coast. But they, you know, with
the Ryola is now leading that charge, they've had much
better success. What about in state kids, Well that that's
in you know, it's one of the smaller groups we've seen.
There have been years like this. You know, there's a
they're gonna probably have a chance of too. They have
Jase Reynolds Milporn North and then the other end state

(05:49):
commit or they have the guy they want, it's Darien
Jones from Omaha North. They couldn't go on Jet Tomala
from Milliard South because they've already got Dayton Ryola. You know,
they've already got dealing TJ Latif, Marcus Davila and then
for the future, Trey Taylor. So they've got a jam
pack full quarterback room in terms of their nil money

(06:10):
and how they want to operate it. And Jet is
the top player by far the state of year. He's
going to Alabama, which is an unbelievable opportunity for him.
But you know they in state wise, Yeah, there have
been years like this. When Sam Cotton was an in
state recruit, he was the only one that year as
a tight end. Josh banderis the year he came out,
he was the only one in the class. So this

(06:31):
is not unheard of to have one or two in
a class, and it's kind of trickled back. But Iowa
State's going to take six this year from Nebraska, which
is the most I've ever seen any out of state
power for school take in one year.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Sean, Thanks, let's stay in touch. I have a great
summer and we'll be we'll be chatting our Husker insider,
Sean Callahan
