Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now, let's get to sports Brief the Husker Buzz edition
with Sean Callahan and Jim Rose Aishano. Kyle Willingham, the
coach of Utah, said, I'm in the transfer portal?

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Now?

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Who isn't in the transfer portal? He was joking around
since he's announced his retirement from football. But these guys
are getting kind of brazen now, Like the starting quarterback
for Missouri has declared his interest in entering the transfer
portal before their Gator Bowl game. Is there no end
of this? Number one and number two? The big question
is which other Huskers are going in any indication from you?

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Yeah, it's hard to say, is that no one else
has declared. I think the next step will be what
guys are there? Guys that aren't going to play in
this bowl game that we don't know about. But yeah,
there's money involved. When you declare, you might lose money.
So you've seen some guys maybe hold out and play
through December because you might lose them once paid if

(00:55):
you go on the portal. There's a business side to
this now, and for some guys that could be over
a hundred thousand dollars in one month or several tens
of thousands of dollars. But you know, we ad till
January second, the Whittingham News, you know, when it came out,
that was kind of what they said. It wasn't a retirement,
but it's just odd to me that it played out

(01:16):
that way in the school. He's done so much for you.
Are they making him do this is my question that
you taught, and if they are, it's pretty odd.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Yeah. I was very austounded by that because he has
done a fabulous job there. They've been very, very competitive.
Now they haven't won national championships and played in the playoffs,
but they've been very competitive in the Big Twelve Conference
as it has expanded and added, you know, everybody from
BYU to Central Florida. So that was a very strange

(01:45):
kind of sequence of dialogue out of Utah. But we
are seeing Malachi Coleman back in the portal. Malachi is
turning into the Marco Polo of football. He goes to
Nebraska and then he goes to Minnesota. Now he's back
in the portal. He didn't play a lot for them
last year. What's the issue with Malachi Coleman, who, by
all accounts might have been the number one prospect in

(02:07):
Nebraska as a senior at East.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
High School, and yeah, it just hasn't clicked for him.
Even at Minnesota, he didn't play that much. I mean,
I'm looking at his snap count. He played in eight games,
one hundred and seventy four total snaps on offense. So
what was not a big receiver for them, had five
catches Jim for eighty three yards. And it just what's
kind of one of those things where I'm guessing he

(02:32):
was expecting to play more than he did when he
got there, and down the stretch of the year he
is playing more. Played twenty five snapskins Oregon, thirty two
against Michigan State. But yeah, I don't know if it
was mutual on their end or strictly his, but it
will be hard to imagine him landing at a better

(02:52):
school than Minnesota, if you're being honest, It'd.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Be hard for him to land at any power for
school at this point. He's going to probably have to
go to the FCS or maybe the Big Sky Conference,
maybe a Wyoming go someplace where they throw the football
a lot.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Mal like guy.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
That's the first question to him. The other question to
me involves coaches Now, I was astounded that LeVar Woods
left Iowa for Michigan State, but I'm even more astounded
that they're going to let him coach in the bowl
game they're playing in the like rely a Quest Bowl.
Why would they allow him to do that knowing you
can take players with you to your new place.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Well, Kirk Parents and Papitzgerald have long been, you know,
mutual close friends, so I think there is a good
relationship there. And this too is maybe you know, a
lot of people thought Woods could be the successor to Parents. Well,
now Farens wants to go maybe longer, two three more
years longer in Iowa City, and maybe this is a
way for him to go somewhere else and then come

(03:50):
back to Iowa. I don't know what the thought was,
but it seemed like of you know that they had
a press conference together to announce this. For a long time,
he was considered the internal person that would replace Parents
someday and is highly respected in the Iowa fan base
and the community and throughout college football. So that is

(04:11):
a major hire for Pat Fitstgerald to get arguably one
of the best special teams coaches in the game to
leave to head the Michigan State.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
Yeah, I think he's number one. All right, Chanad, thanks,
have a great weekend. That's Kave Husker Christmas Sean. We're
not going to talk to him on Monday or Tuesday
of next ye we're not. Okay, well you said that
yesterday I did.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
Yeah, it's Seano's constantly handy in the event, but he
has the knowledge of ten men, as you know.
