Speaker 1 (00:00):
We go to a sports Breed now the Husker Buzz
edition with our Big Red Insider, Sean Callahan Live and
Lincoln Rosie.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Ok.
Speaker 3 (00:06):
You know, thanks a sad all right shouto. There was
a little bit of internet buzz yesterday. Some of the
Chinese are not too happy about the hiring of Rob Rich,
defensive coordinator at San Diego State. I looked at his
record as a player. He was a really good player.
He's an All American Division two or f what they
call FCS All American and has climbed his way up
(00:28):
the ladder. And his team's defensively in very offensive minded
conferences have been very stout. I think, what do you think?
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Yeah, I spoke with all to say, a head coach
in the Mount West and then he had great things
to say about him and said, the brass is getting
a very good one. And you know, I think he's
a cultural fit number one, he's a schematic fit. That's
the other key. As Matt Ruhle moves into this, and
I think the personnel on this roster is going to
(00:58):
fit better moving forward with what he wants to do.
I mean, Keona Davis and Williams Winery has true defensive
ends and not three four down linemen. Completely different players now,
Kate Petschock, Briley Van Poppel on a four to three
on a four man line look way different. Even a
guy like Christian Jones in a four to two five,
I think now has a home where I think in
(01:19):
a three three five, I don't know where he fit
as well, So they're there. I think there are some
definite pluses to move to what he wants to do.
And that's why Matt Rule also wants to move to
this four two five because unless you have Ty Robinson,
Nash hut Mocker, you know, twenty four year old d lineman,
it's hard to consistently run the three three five at
(01:40):
the level it needs to be run at to win
in the Big ten.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Yeah, and there's this factor too, and it's it's probably
not as apparent to the average fan because they see
a coaching staff as very cohesive. But Matt Rule is
a defensive mind. And sometimes you don't want too many
roosters in the henhouse, Okay, you want somebody at the
top of the food chain who tells somebody else what
to do, and you don't want in fighting because a
(02:05):
lot of veteran defensive coordinators who've had a lot of
success come in and say, well, this is how I
do things, and you're paying me a million dollars to
do that. Maybe that's the case with this hire.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
Yeah, you know, he did something similar Dana Holerson bringing
in a guy he had no familiarity with just to
run the show and he stays away from the offense.
And I think it's similar to this. He has still
Snow though, kind of his ultimate consultant that will still
be involved as the senior assistant coach of the defensive staff,
(02:41):
and we assume Snow and obviously Addison Williams are going
to be the two that will be retained. Now, there's
been no other staff movement, and I think some of
that might just kind of take place after the Bowl game,
but you get the sense there could be a change
on the d line staff and some of the other
positions as are at kind of puts things together, and
(03:02):
that's a big deal. If you're coming here with no connections,
you want to have a couple of lieutenants with you
that you're familiar with you and in what you do.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Sean, you don't think Snow and those guys will try
to change up the defense for the bowl game.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
To you, I do, I mean, I think you'll see.
I think you'll see Snow kind of pull a little
bit of Bill Bush where he'll he'll come in after
Shenander and kind of line things up right. And because
they've had some alignment issues and some of the things
they were doing late in the year against Iowa and
Penn State, I think you'll see Snow have kind of
(03:37):
a cleaner feel to this defense and have them ready
to go right.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
But they're not going to try to They're not going
to try to switch to the fore man front.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
But I have it. I mean, like the UFC game,
they ran four man front like seventy percent of the game.
So I wouldn't be shocked if they did some of
that in this bowl game. Utah's got a couple of
first round tackles, and some of their key guys probably
won't play in this game. That will be something all
so the tab to see how many of Utah's top
guys are out from this game. We don't em It's
out for Nebraska and Rocko's out right now. Mccullaugh is going.
(04:09):
He announced he's going pro. He's a senior. I don't
know why you do it, but he's still playing in
the bowl game. That was a little confusing on Sunday
with the Sam mccullaugh, but he's playing in the Bowl
for Nebraska. So well here today from rule if there's
any more guys not playing, but Rocco and Emmitt are
the two right now.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Yeah, rock okay, so he's out anyway, all right, Sean,
thanks our Husker Insider
