Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sean Callahan live in Lincoln, right, Okay, everybody all together now,
it's Shatos twenty ninth birthday. So yeah, it's all saying
happy birthday and whatever language Utuay birthday.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Well, I appreciate that, guys. I always enjoy kicking off
the day with you on my birthday.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Of course, if you don't get what you want on
your birthday, it's your own fault. That's just the way
you gotta live.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Big boy.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
You don't get what you want on your birthday, but
you don't blame but yourself.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
So let's talk about Husker football.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
It's a game simulator game day, Simulator day today.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
What does that mean exactly?

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Well, they're gonna basically live out the schedules that they'll
have on Thursday in Kansas City, and it's a long one.
I mean, they're gonna be at the hotel, the games
not until eight o'clock at night, and you know it's
one of the later kickoffs. She'll see Nebraska play in
Central time zone. So for the team, you know, they've
got to just kind of mentally lay out the schedule

(00:55):
in terms of the meetings, and I mean, I think
you're going to have the chapel services today for players,
all the different things that they would do at the
hotel and then downtime and whatnot. And they're going to
go to a local area high school in Kansas City
for a walk through kind of just get out of
the hotel type of deal. So yeah, that will be
and they're in I think we talked about this. They're

(01:16):
going to bust down to Kansas City, which they haven't
bussed to a road football game since twenty ten. I mean,
he's been that long since they've had one this close.
So there's so many elements with the later start time,
the bus ride, but then they'll fly home, so they
don't get back at four in the morning. They'll they'll
they'll fly home after the game and get back probably

(01:36):
around midnine or one, I mean what that.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
Fly will be, so oh the earliest, maybe even two.
It'll take.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
Yeah, let's say the game ends at eleven, you know,
and then you've got your hour and a half, you know,
just post game, shut down, news conference, pack up, shower,
get on the bus. If they have a police escort
out of there, which they will need, it's probably twenty
five to thirty minutes to kCi. Even the charter area

(02:05):
and then to go through security. It'll be at least
one thirty or two by the time they get home.
But yeah, if they went with a bus, it'd be
at least four or four point thirty. And I'm not
sure what the difference makes. They'm not playing the next day,
but you know, Matt Rule probably doesn't want to get
home at three thirty four o'clock in the morning. I
remember doing that one time on a Husker road trip.
It was no fun. Uh okay, So we have all

(02:26):
of these positions handled now except for placekicker. Are they
going to divide the placekicker duties? You kick the short ones,
you kick the pats, you kick the long ones.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Is that what we're going to boil down to.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
I don't know. I mean, I think Friday, though, we'll
get a better picture. We'll hear from Matt Rule. The
official game notes get released, and generally a depth chart
is in a game note. So it wouldn't surprise me
at all if we see a depth chart and get
some clarity on this. But I all the intel I have,
says Kyle Kuonan, and probably has the edge to be

(02:59):
the guy. But yeah, then would somebody else handle the
kickoff specialist duties or whatnot. And I mean, yeah, there
are different roles. You know, Archie Wilson's the punter, but
you know they all kick it about the same distance.
Kananan probably kicks it the hardest though. He's the best
ball striker and that's what's going to separate him in

(03:19):
my opinion, when you play in the wins that we
have in this part of the country, you know, if
you know the way you strike the ball matters because
he can cut through the wind, where if you don't
get a good strike on a ball that still travels
fifty yards, the wind can pull your kicks. And I
know I've heard Mike Eckler, I've heard Bradh Or I've
heard former kickers talk about that, and I think that's

(03:40):
why they brought Counan in here.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
Yeah, it is very, very challenging, and when you get
into November, the balls heavier.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
Okay, seanl get your take.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
We were talking about Harrison Phillips who was transfer transfer
traded from the Vikings to the Jets yesterday for a
couple of draft picks. This was the Gatorade Nebraska Player
of the Year. He was no sleeper and uh bo
Polini slow walked this guy, meaning he just delayed delay,
didn't really recruit, and Stanford came in and took him.
What do you remember about his recruitment to Nebraska or lack.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Thereof, Well, I watched his workout at camp that summer.
It was, you know, the big workout, a lot of
eyeballs on it, and it was with him and mixed Stoltenberg.
I believe we're both there together Greton alignment. That ended
up being a commit. But they kind of waited and
waited and they didn't make the offer immediately to Harrison

(04:31):
at the camp, and I think there there they weren't.
They didn't know how much his body for sure would
develop and grow, because you know, just his frame, you know,
just when you compare him to other guy. That was
I think their question. Well, they waited about a week
U c l A. And Stanford offered him, and then
Nebraska followed up the next week with their offer, and

(04:54):
I think at that point they ran behind. I think
the family or Harrison felt, you know, he was kind
of second fiddle. So Stanford then moved up to the
top position and they were a top program at that
time too. Stanford's top education, so you know you can't
follow him. Obviously, go to Stanford was a great opportunity
at that time, played.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
Rose Bowls, but there was also both typical philosophy of
not really making a big deal out of recruiting until
the last couple of weeks. He'd crammed for the test,
as I think you described one time, which is not
very healthy anymore.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Hey Seano, happy birthday again.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
I have a wonderful day and we're down to the
countdown now, just a week away from the first game.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
That's Sean Callahan, our Husker Insider every morning here
