Speaker 1 (00:00):
Onward too. Sports Brief Now the Husker Buzz edition, we
have Sean Callahan our Big Red Insider Live and Lincoln
Scott in for gym rows.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Sean, before we talk about current Huskers and coaches and
recruiting weekends and so forth. I've got some people here
in the inbox saying, what can you guys tell me
about what happened to the owner of Pizon's, a very
popular pizza wings joint near Omaha Scott High School? And Sean,
as you know, this is a former Husker who runs
(00:28):
this place. What can you tell us?
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Yeah, Matt Burzol sadly passed away yesterday. And I just
saw Matt on Friday last week. He was in town
for the National Championship reunion and ran into him with
his sister and brother in law, and they were out
and enjoying the town and just a guy that everybody knew,
not only from being a player at Nebraska, but for
(00:51):
years he owned and operated some of the most popular
restaurants and bars and Lincoln. He was one of the
owners of Lazari's Pizza at Lincoln the Bar on Town,
which were popular Oa Street establishments. Head coached football at
Omaha Scott with Matt Turman for a number of years
and then most recently obviously he has ran the Paithon's
restaurant as well. So just a guy that touched a
(01:12):
lot of people, did a lot of things for a
lot of people over the years and this sad news.
Was also the color analysts for the Class A State
football finals on Nebraska Public Media probably for about the
last ten years. Him and Damon Benning did those duties together.
And Damon has been coaching in those games almost every year,
so he would always be our Class A analyst. And
(01:35):
you know, we was looking forward to working on Matt
and he was actually scheduled to come on big gerd
wrap up with us here in a couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Yeah, just a tough deal.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Fifty one years old, worked down the street at our
friends at the Zone for a long time here and
played for the Huskers during author right right.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
Yeah, he was a part of part of those teams
in the nineties and you know, played with so many
great players again and was loved by and it really
had made a name as an analyst, I mean, just
his thoughts and opinions and he was not afraid to
say what he thought about things, and you know.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
And then that was those guys weren't afraid of anything. Well,
that's sad. I don't know what happened, Sean, do you know?
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Yeah, I don't want to speculator to day, but it did. Definitely.
The news is out there. Yeah, and again a guy
that has touched so many people.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Indeed, indeed, well, uh, you know, you talk about a
prep football coach here in the high school ranks in Omaha.
Let's start here talking about football, Sean, with some of
what happened when some of the prep scores last night
here seventy seven nothing, Miller South Winds sixty three six,
Elcorn South Winds, north Over Northeast forty two seven, Milbern
(02:53):
north Over, Brian fifty six nothing. I mean, this is
getting ridiculous, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
There's not a lot of desire to want to pack
the family up on a Friday night to go to
games when you see these scores right now. But they
are trying to get in front of this. For the future.
They're going to create in Class A, for example, what's
called an emerging district, and the teams that are like
the ones that just got beat are going to only
play each other, and that's going to start next year,
(03:22):
and then the other teams will only play each other
and there'll be more geographical games that makes sense. There
will be games where Omaha Brian is traveling the North
platte you know, you know, just things that don't make
sense with what they've kind of done with scheduling and
things over the years. But the main pieces that everybody
knows they've got to kind of eliminate these kinds of games.
(03:44):
But heck, Lincoln Southeast, one of the proud programs, got
beat seventy seven to nothing. That was their worst loss
in history. Millard South did that earlier this year to
Miller North and Millard West, handing them all their worst
losses in program history. You know, Millard South right now
is going to finish as the most dominant team in
state history in terms of scores and Division IE players.
(04:06):
And you know that's the elephant of the room. Well,
the roster building.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Yeah, it's preposterous, and I'm glad they're doing the rejiggering
the schedule model. They also need to. I mean, it's
it's sad Sean that these schools don't have the identity
of their neighborhood kids playing schools with their neighborhood kids.
You know, yes it is, that's gone. Yes, it's just bad.
They need to address.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
The enrollment and plus sean as you know that. Coach
Rule and others are heading out for some recruiting this weekend.
How are you supposed to judge potential in state recruits.
I'm sure Millard South obviously has some fantastic athletes, but
how can you really get a beat on them as
a recruiter when they're just doing a track meet against
some team seventy seven to nothing.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
Well in the summer, but yeah, it's tough. I mean
they have twelve Division one kids I think in their
senior class right now. I mean that's the most I've
ever seen in the history of doing this job. Their
quarterbacks going now Bama, their running backs going to Illinois,
their tight ends going to Missouri, their main receivers going
to Iowa State. I mean, they are loaded across the board.
Coach Roll on the road. He was in Texas last
(05:12):
night watching a Mott Hudson, a Louisiana tight end who
was playing in Midland at Midland Lee. Coach Roll probably
be in Chicago today. Is my understanding to check out
their quarterback recruit Trade Taylor, and he might even swing
out to South Dakota as well to see Cooper Twilliger,
a four star tight end in Pierre, South Dakota.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
All Right, so what's happening with the Oscars Now? They
off till they're going to resume their their regular week
routine starting Monday.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Yeah, they practiced yesterday all three days this week, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
Took Friday off today and then Saturday off. Sunday's actually
when they begin, so they'll be up there Sunday full day,
at work full week, and then Monday's actually they're normal
off day. I don't know if that changes a little
bit with the bye week, but they'll get back at it.
From Michigan State. They've had a good week of practice
(06:01):
and this will be a tough game, guys. I haven't
seen the early points spread, but it's probably gonna be
about a touchdown from Nebraska. Maybe I don't know how
high old get, but I think Nebraska will be a
favorite in this game, but it won't be by much.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
Very good our Husker insider Seancallahan from Husker Online dot Com,
and he's with us every morning and with Emery in
the afternoon, and then USCAR Online Show tonight and every
Friday six to seven on news radio eleven ten KA
