Speaker 1 (00:00):
We go to sports Breeve now the Husker Buzz edition
where our Husker insider Sean Callahan live and like and Rosie.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Well, I did it have a big game feel at
the big AA meeting yesterday known as the press conference,
Sean Callahan, did you sense that this was a big
game buzz?
Speaker 3 (00:17):
Yeah, it was a you know, they're being careful. I
think obviously they know the challenge of him, but this
is the biggest game Matt Rules coach since he's been
in a Lincoln, I mean Colorado game. We could make
an argument for last year was up there, but just
the stakes to get this team to four and oh.
They haven't started the year four and oh since twenty sixteen,
(00:37):
and they haven't beaten a ranked opponent since twenty sixteen.
So there's a lot at stake this week for Nebraska
when you start to, you know, see where they could
take their season. And we know what the point spread is.
It's nearly a pick in Michigan's about two and a
half now, and you know this team has had three
games to kind of get its sea legs and figure
(00:59):
it out, and you get the sense they're all looking
forward to this challenge.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
This reminds me a little bit of last year's Nebraska
Indiana game. For Indiana, people were saying, all right, is
this for real?
Speaker 1 (01:10):
Are they good? You know?
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Now, they had one a conference game at UCLA, and
we found out that wasn't much of a big deal.
But when Indiana came out and really took it to
Nebraska and blasted the Huskers at Bloomington last year, that
elevated everybody's expectations and it went on to an eleven
and one season. So I'm feeling the same vibe. Are
you connecting the two or is it different?
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Well, that's a good analogy because there were a lot
of people that were picking Nebraska to be Indiana a
year ago. I'm just kind of assuming that Indiana was
a fraud because their schedule, they hadn't beaten anybody, you know,
that was notable at all, and they were blown out
really bad teams. That's kind of like Nebraska. No one's
necessarily giving Cincinnati a ton of respect, even though they
(01:55):
are playing really well the last two weeks, but no
one's putting a lot of stock in the stats Nebraska
has put up against Akron in Houston Christian But I've
watched a lot of football here in twenty five plus years,
and what we saw the last two weeks doesn't happen
very often. Or you put up the kind of points,
the kind of yards you execute, you don't turn it over.
This offense has one turnover over three weeks. Still, Royla
(02:17):
has no interceptions, The defense continues to get off the
field on third downs, the special teams that are greatly improved.
There are things that you can zone in on the
last three weeks that tell you this is a much
better football team than it was a year ago. And
I think we're all excited to see now what it
will look like against a Michigan team that's not going
to have its head coach. It has a five star
(02:38):
true freshman quarterback, but a defense that lost most of
its star power from a year ago.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
They do except Jayshn Barnum is legitimate first jound draft choice.
He's number one for Michigan. He's their beast of a linebacker.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Isn't Ernest Ausman still there?
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Ernest Hausman is there, and he's had a good year.
He's a very good player, and he's a really good
person too. Let's visit for a second about transfers. We
are one fourth of the way through the season, Sean
On and as you recall, Rosie declared that Andrew Marshall
would be the premier most impactful transfer. How's that prediction
holding up? I think actually there's somebody ahead of them
(03:15):
by a nose in the transfer derby. But in your mind,
who's been the best transfer so far?
Speaker 3 (03:23):
It's debatable. I mean, Dankey and Isaiah Hunter would both
have an argument. Dankey's second in the Big ten and
touchdown receptions right now at this point on the O line,
you know, it's hard to really say. I mean, they haven't.
They haven't given up a sack or a quarterback hit
in two weeks. They haven't done that to Cincinnati, So
you could argue Spindler would be in in that conversation too.
(03:45):
But then on defense, yeah, you mentioned Marshall, Saw McCollough,
Williams win Aery leads the team until quarterback curries right now,
so it but Mayol Marshall would be in that discussion.
There's no question in the kicker Kyle and we're not
talking about him that much, but he's he's been near perfect.
He has been perfect all year.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Yeah, he's my guy. He's he's the most impactful transfer
so far. Uh, this was a huge problem for Nebraska
last year and it's not now. Nobody even thinks about
the problems on special teams. But as much as I'm
going to hang on Marshall, and the only reason I
think Marshall might still emerge is because you're gonna see
(04:27):
passes down the field. They haven't had to do that.
Nebraska secondary has been taking the games off because the
teams have been, you know, so dominated by the front three.
But you got to give to Sean McCullough a lot
of credit for the difference he's made. He is a
genuine physical present.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
Maybe it's Kevin Gallack the most impactful the long snapper guy.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
This secondary hasn't given up a pass of longer than
nineteen yards all year. Yeah, that's impressive, like over three
games to not allow one covered break at all. And
Seer Wright has only allowed one completion for four yards
all season in three games on the other corner spot.
So the corner play has been really really good early
(05:09):
and nobody's even trying those guys because they've blocked up
their players so well.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
I think John Butler is going to have to get creative.
I guess that Michigan mccallaughy. They paid a lot of
money to get to Shawn mccallaugh in here. He needs
to have a big game shown. Thanks our Husker insider
