Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sports briefly huskar Bos signing the edition with Sean Callahan
live and Lincoln. Here's Jim Rose.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Okay, thanks Avner. Here we go, Shana with signing Day,
which used to be a really big deal in Nebraska.
It was always the first Tuesday in February and it
culminated a crazy month of January when we were out
there trying to get visits, trying to take a guy away.
It doesn't have that anymore. Number One, it's in December.
Number two, because of the transfer portal. A lot of

(00:27):
schools have drifted away from high school kids in Nebraska's
one of them. It looks like ten in the class
today will sign. What's your take on the class and
who do you think has a chance to see the
field next year?

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Well, yeah, it's the smallest class really in the history
of high school recruiting with Nebraska football. And that's all
are Obviously, back in the day they had unlimited scholarships
to take classes of forty fifty high school signings as
they wanted to. And obviously, you know, usually we'd see twenty,
maybe even twenty five. We've seen over thirty before, but yeah,

(01:03):
just ten. I still think, you know, a lot of
it has to do with the roster numbers. As we've
talked about, they only have nineteen seniors. They're gonna bring
ten high school guys in. They're probably gonna bring ten
portal guys in. I mean, that's kind of the blend
of how he wants to do this. I do think
Danny Odom is an outstanding addition. He's their highest ranked guy.
He's a five star by one Service. We have him

(01:24):
as a high four. He's a corner out of Orlando.
That's clearly one of their bigger nil rev share. Siginees
Claude Puma would be another one to tackle, but you know,
I don't know if a freshman tackle can come in
and play right away. I think the receivers both can
play early Nayland Scott and Larry Miles, but Luke Soorns
and I really like the tight end out of California.

(01:46):
They won't only wanted to take one tight end in
this class, and this is the guy that they zoned
in on out of Anaheim's survey. One of the powerhouse programs.
And lastly, Jamal Rule, the running back out of North Carolina.
He had an outsider standing senior year over two hundred
pounds six foot two five, so a bigger physical back

(02:07):
they're bringing in that you know, you just never know
its running back. They could come in and play right away.
It is notable too. Guys. They signed a kicker, Michael
Kisas out of Australia and the meaning about Kyle cunanan
or John Hole. But they wanted to get another guy
on the roster for the future. So he's a freshman
sinee kicker out of Pro Kick Australia, which is mainly

(02:30):
known for punters. But they're going to get a kicker
out of there now too.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
All right, I'm looking at the Nebraska list. There is
one Nebraska kid on this list, and according to Rivals,
he is the number thirteen ranked player in fourteenth ranked
player in the state, Jace Reynolds, the linebacker hybrid from
Elkhorn North. But the top thirteen guys in Nebraska's class

(02:53):
this year are going somewhere else, led by Jet Tomala,
the quarterback of Millard South now Shana. This is going
to be hard for a lot of Husker fans to swallow,
given that Millard South had the best high school football
team in the history of the state and not a
single one of those guys is coming to Nebraska.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah, you know, they offered Isaac Jensen the tight end
on that team, but they got Luke Sorenson. I mean
the type of tight end they needed. He fit that
need better. That's the guy they went with. That tight end.
Jet Tomala's recruiting has been well documented. At that time,
Dayton Royola was committed two months Excuse me, he's committed
in September. Jet Tamala did even get its first Division

(03:37):
one offer until January, so the recruiting of Tamala hadn't
even begun really nationally until they had already had Dayton
Riola's commitment. But other than that, in state wise, Darien
Jones Alamaha North chose Iowa or Nebraska and that was it.
I mean, I think the way Matt rules season, Hey,
some of these guys, they're going to go to Iowa State.

(03:58):
If they do well there, we'll take them back. I mean,
that's just the reality of recruiting. Now. Playing in the
Big twelve is completely different than playing in the Big Ten,
and I think people have to understand that the type
of player and the SEC in the Big Ten now
is a higher graded player and maybe it will be
better for some guys to play in a lower conference
than move their way up, you know, they get to

(04:20):
that level bit. The draft Ada everything out there obviously
shows that. I mean, those are the two leagues, and
it takes a pretty special player now out of high
school to be recruited in those conferences.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Well, like the other one that I think is a
little bit of a question mark is the van Segern
kid from Millard South who went to Illinois. Now, this
was the kid from Grand Island. Correct, he was originally.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Von Siegreins and old Lineman transfer from Papio South. You're
thinking about Nelson Wheeler.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Nelson Wheeler, Yeah, the running back from Grand Island. Nelson
I big part of ye Nelson Wheeler the running back.
Now running back is an interesting position in the year
twenty twenty five. But I look at this list of
the kids and I see a peeper in this list,
you know, like Leyden Burbach from Norfolk Catholic who's going
to Northwestern. He's the number four ranked kid in the state.

(05:08):
It used to be that we would take a kid
and say, yeah, now we didn't have the transfer portal
back then, but we're going to turn you into a
three or a four year kid like Iowa did with
Kate Peeper from a Norfolk Catholic. Why is it the
Nebraska's coaches don't think that way anymore.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Well, because the roster limitations of one hundred and five.
They have one hundred and twenty five guys right now,
and they're just they're not, you know, like they have
nineteen seniors, so they're not going to be able to
overly be aggressive. You saw guys Matt Ruhl do that
his first couple of years. He took more in state
players than really any coach recently the last couple of years.

(05:45):
This is the one outlier, and he's already taken a
few guys. But you can no longer go overboard with
just say, you know, let's make room for this guy,
let's let's bring him in. You know, Jace Reynolds, you
could argue as that type of player. I mean, he
really didn't have a whole lot in recruiting, but they
see a developmental guy at a position that makes sense.

(06:06):
But yeah, it's just a different era, and I know
it's hard for traditionalists to follow, but you know, most
college teams are going to be a little bit more
careful with how and what they do with their high.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
School recruiting, right, all right, Seonathan's right, that's that's that's
the system now. But it's pretty hard to see Nebraska
kids do well somewhere else, and it's a little arrogant thinking, well.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
That'll be good at I was to get them back
here insider from usc online dot Com. That's Sean Callahan.
Here's six fifty four
