Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sports Breathing Now the Husker Buzz edition with Sean Callahan
live in Lincoln spring Ball. Here's Jim Rokay Seana.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
The big story in college football this week is this
idea that Dion Sanders has floated of playing another team
in your spring game. We used to slice the roster
and half half of them red shirts, the other half
white shirts and then have a scrimmage. Now they're talking
about bringing another team in at Colorado Syracuse and Matt
Rule didn't rule it out. What's your take on this?

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Well, yeah, he said, yeah, if it was within the rules,
yeah he maybe consider it, but it's not. And I
don't think he thinks it would be something that would
be allowed within the rule. It's just kind of a
perfect offseason thing to throw out there to generate clicks
and then the talk, and it's Dion Sanders on top
of that. So and then you had a coach at Syracuse,

(00:51):
Fran Brown, who Matt Rule knows very well because he
coached for Matt Rule Baylor, you know, got on social
media and said let's do it. But I just there's
a lot of reasons why it wouldn't happen. I mean,
I think the injury risk to your team is probably
the biggest one. But you know, a place like Nebraska,
what if you lost a game like that in the spring.

(01:14):
I mean you say people wouldn't overreact, but at a
place like here South Dakota State or Kansas State, Hamorrhage
in a spring scrimmage, you know, the natives here would
would would be unhinged all spring and summer. I mean,
I just think a lot. I mean, it'd be fun, though,
there's no doubt. The only way, you know, they'd have
to prove it. But then there have to be a

(01:36):
lot of money to be made on it. They're not
doing this just for social media clicks. I mean, it
would have to actually turn some revenue, and you know,
good spring games would obviously generate some television viewership. But
I think we are a long long way from even
thinking about something like that.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Well, the NFL does it. They do split squad scrimmages
on Saturday during training camps. They'll bring them Vikings in
to play the Chiefs when they were up in Whitewater,
Minnesota or Wisconsin and all of that. And it was
more about Okay, well we're just going to see another team.
I don't think it would be an official game. And
the other question I ask is why ask the NCAA

(02:13):
for permission? Who cares? There are no rules anymore. The
n c two A has virtually no purview over college
football anymore. Every time they get sued, they lose. But
to me, it's it's just like an NFL model and
everything else is going to NFL in college football.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Yeah, who's paying for it though? I mean the hotels involved,
the traveling of equipment. College teams are double triple the
size of a pro roster. I mean, there's a lot
more other variables on a college situation that you'd have
to deal with that would make this a lot harder
to do. And then even then you worry about some

(02:51):
of your guys that they perform well, that are younger,
all of a sudden they're starting to a transferport request
to leave your roster because they looked good in the spring.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Strim Well, that was his original concern, Matt doing a
spring game.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
The TV exposure and injuries. Okay, talking about the team
other than Heinrich Harberg, Am I missing any other major
position changes down there? Or is that pretty much it now?

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Jaden Dawes moved back to receiver. He's gone from receiver
to DV back to receiver. Rowdy Bauer, a young man
from Norfolk, has moved from running back to safety. He
was a state champ class a long jump guy last year.
They like him. I think Matt Rul just wanted to
see him and play some safety. But right now it's
very quiet on that front as far as true positions.

(03:35):
I mean, those are the only two big ones of
note right now.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Hey, I want to go back to something just we
touched on Monday, and I know it's a big storyline
this spring and going forward with this team. We're talking
about a lot of guys who have a lot of
experience on the offensive line that are out this spring
with injuries. Do we know anything for sure Sean about
their state? Are they Are they out for the spring

(04:01):
but they'll be ready on the fall or is it
a big question mark or what?

Speaker 3 (04:05):
Well? Turner Corkoran and Teddy Prosca, Yeah they're out for
the spring, Teddy coming off a knee injury, Turner a
hamstring surgery, but yeah, they're expected to be back for
the summer. Henry Latowski had shoulder surgery. He is going
to be limited this spring and kind of what he
can do. And there's some discussion about him being a

(04:26):
right tackle. You know, I think he'll start. It's a
matter of where they move him around to. And then
Gunner Getula's shoulder surgery. He's out for the spring. He'll
be back. That's the big question. Can they figure out
who that other tackle is. We know Elijah Pritchett's going
to be one of the tackles. How will that shake
out with Latowski, Getula, Corkoran p Hosca. They've got to

(04:48):
figure out kind of that puzzle that combination. Sam Sledge
is going to get a really good look at center.
I think Jason Mitchachak will be in the conversation. You
got Justin Evans back, who can play guard, he can
play center. And then Rocko Spindler is going to be
a starter from Notre Dame. So they have a core
of veteran players. It is a matter of figuring out
how they want to puzzle that thing together.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
This is this is the year for the offensive line.
This offensive line has to be impactful this year.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
What about that big lug we got from Io. Remember
we're pulled a semi over there.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
Yeah, Grant Brick and he is only going into a
second year. He red shirted. He's going to be a player.
It's good that we're not thrown out a red shirt freshman, though.
I mean, I think he'd like to keep developing these
guys and getting them ready. He's a big, massive human being.
He played a level of football that'd be probably comparable
to Class C. So I do think just developing him

(05:40):
and getting him stronger, getting him used to this level.
I mean, Preston Talmot was another impressive looking young lineman
they brought in. He's going into his red shirt freshman year.
Every lineman now, I believe in the program is red shirted.
I mean, so they've done a good job of kind
of building this thing up and not having to play
true freshman right away.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
A young guy a little yeah, and it's hard now
the portal if they're not playing. In some cases they go, well,
I got to go where I'm going to play. But
this is the year for the offensive line. The time
has come. They need to They need to dig holes
for running backs and they need to protect Riola. We
can't have what we've had for the last ten years

(06:19):
on the offensive line.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Donovan Royola needs to channel is inner Milt tenor pro yes,
which I'm sure he will. All Right, Seawan, I will
talk Friday. Thanks Sean Callahan, our big Red insider with
a Husker buzz
