Speaker 1 (00:00):
A lot of sports breed now Huscar Buzz edition with
Sean Callahan Live in Lincoln, Rosie. Well, this is a
hell of a celebration for volleyball these days, and yet
it's nothing new, Sean. Oh Nebraska volleyball has been the
premier program in the country for the last ten years.
They have obviously the premier facility, They have nil money
for them. They play in football stadiums in front of
(00:22):
one hundred thousand people. So volleyball is now it around
here and as a cultural touchstone, how do you place it?
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Well, yeah, it's you know, I mean, volleyball right now
in the state is like when I grew up in
the nineties, what football was. You know, every boy wanted
to play football at Nebraska, wanted to do whatever they
could to get there. Well, that's volleyball right now in
the state of Nebraska. And my daughter, I have one
daughter that's him. Was the second grader, was the first
grader last year and she was playing just like developmental
(00:51):
start out volleyball. And I couldn't believe there are hundreds
of little girls playing volleyball every Sunday, you know, And
that's a testament that on cook you know, what he's
done to this state where every little girl in first
second grade is starting to try to learn how to
play the support of volleyball. I can't envision that is
the case in a lot of states around the country
of any but I think the social media era and
(01:15):
some of the things that really helped brand this volleyball
team too. I mean that people feel like they know
these girls, They like these girls. I mean, even ones
that have left Nebraska a leet bait and horse has beloved.
So I feel like the state just feels like they
connect with these players and know them, and they do
as good of a job of branding themselves and the
(01:37):
images that they put out on social media and videos
and tiktoks and whatnot of any sport at Nebraska, and
you know that John Cook has got something going. It's
fun to watch.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
And you play in front of ninety two thousand people
in a football stadium and it becomes the global news
story of the day. You can't buy that in a
hundred years. So they pulled that off, and they've got
all these athletes now that want to play here. The
question is how long can it go on in the
NIL era? In your view and we'll talk about nil
for football on a second. In your view, can Nebraska
(02:10):
maintain this in an nil era?
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yes, because in a revshare world, there's only going to
be a handful of teams that put that kind of
nil and rev share towards the volleyball athletes. Nebraska is
going to lead the pack in that. I mean, I'm
sure Wisconsin in Texas and Penn State, maybe Pittsburgh now
to a level, but Nebraska will lead that because not
(02:33):
only will they have probably as I have, a reb
share number that goes towards volleyball, and the rep share
number is the twenty million dollars that will be allowed
to pay the athletes. There's twenty two and a half
you can do, but two and a half that has
to go towards scholarship money, and then twenty million host
towards paying the athletes. Nebraska will put as big of
a piece as you can that makes sense towards volleyball.
(02:54):
In my opinion, they should because it's one of three
women's sports in America that makes a pro after all
their bills, which is you o a like Iowa women's
basketball and be curious what they made. But a lot
of women's basketball programs don't make money. Volleyball is not
supposed to make money. Nebraska makes money on it, so
(03:15):
they will invest in volleyball heavily. And you know they
John Cook doesn't recruit, He select right, I mean, they
don't really miss out on too many people.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Yeah, that's the old mike Y Chefski approach. We don't recruit,
We go out and pick who we want. All right
to football update on the portal. What do you know?
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Well, the big storyline to watch now are two key
wide receivers will be coming into Lincoln over the next
couple of days. Naysa Hunter from Cal just got in
last night. He was Cal's leading receiver. He's six two,
one ninety two. He's got three years of elisibility. And
Dane Key, who played for daikiel Schwartz, Nebraska's new wide
receiver coach at Kentucky. He was Kentucky's leading receiver. He
(03:53):
will be in Lincoln as well over the weekend. So
those are two guys to watch much closely. Nebraska is
going to have a Georgia edge player in town here
today tomorrow as well. Samuel and Pemba out of Saint
Louis originally a former national top fifty recruit. Similar situation
(04:16):
to MJ. Sherman, just couldn't get on the field. But
they've got to get their offensive line thing figured out.
Isaiah World, the top top tackle in the portal, was
here in Lincoln this week. He was in Oregon. Well
last night he committed to Oregon. So Nebraska's got a
Washington State guy they have got on campus. That's probably
their number one priority locking up as a tackle, because
(04:38):
that is, you know, with what they've lost, they want
to get one really good offensive tackle for sure in
this recruiting class. Andrew Marshall, a defensive back from Idaho,
a really really good FCS player, an All conference player
for a top fifteen, top twenty FCS team. He's here
and their coaching staff just left Idaho as well, So
he's open on the market, and I think Nebraska who's
(05:00):
got a really good chance to lock him up. He's
getting a lot of attention.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Though, Yeah, I really wish Nebraska would zero in on
star FCS players and not reserves. In power for programs.
This is the Indiana construct. They went and got guys
who were impact players at the FCS level. Minnesota did
that with Max brosmer. If you go get a guy
who ain't playing for a Power four team, there's a reason.
But you get a guy that is a starter and
(05:23):
is a star at an FCS level, you got a winner.
Nil money, still plentiful, got about a minute to go here.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Yeah, they've got the rev share money now, so everybody's
got money. I mean, Nebraska is going to have fourteen
to fifteen million in house and then whatever eighteen ninety does.
You have a budget, though you have a certain amount
of money per room you want to spend, you like
in a tight end room is a great example of
that when you're paying big dollars to other guys in
that room like Fdoni and Heiner Karberg is now a
(05:53):
tight end and Carter Nelson and a number of other players.
It doesn't make sense to this throw another couple hundred
thousand towards a guy when you already got three or four.
They're gonna play manage your room with a budget as well,
which is a whole new concept. Sean.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
Thanks our Husker insider Sean Callahan. Every morning
