Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome on in.
Speaker 2 (00:00):
This is episode three of our series with Roley Jenkins,
who along with his brother, is biking thousands of miles
to raise money for charity. We'll get into that. Raleigh
joins us again as always, and unfortunately we were supposed
to do this last week or even two weeks ago,
(00:21):
I think, and it was right at the time of
the tragic flooding that took place up in central Texas,
and it's something that affected you and your brother directly.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
It did. I mean talking about horrific flooding and just
the results of what happened on the Guadalupe River and
all through Hunt. You know, my kids, my brother's kids
all went to Mystic, so we're big Mystic fans, and
so Bobby's granddaughters were there at that time. They were
(00:55):
bubble in as the one that basically washed away, and
they were in the cabin right next to it. Francis
the youngest one, she floated on our mattress and all
the way up to the ceiling. Her head was touching
the ceiling and they were just fighting, you know, staying
in one spot while the storm would reside. And it
(01:15):
was a very scary time because we got phone calls
like for here around six am, and we were just
glued to the screen. And Bobby's niece, she's one of
the girls in bubble in that they never found her
until I guess the Monday after they found her body.
And it's just it's wrecked our life, wrecked our whole
(01:39):
you know, persona of what was going on. So we
went home, and we went home for funerals. We went
home just to kind of shore our families up a
bit because they were very shooken up by it all
and still are. And then we started some fundraising that
we can do internally with ABC to help support all
the cleanup and everything that's going on in Curville and Hunt, Texas.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
So, I mean, and oh, one of the things I
admire about you is how you always try to turn
things into a positive. And I didn't have kids, at
least I didn't have two legged kids. I got a
four leg a child, right, So I cannot imagine what
you guys were going through. First of all, you were
(02:23):
onlike the opposite side of the country, in another country
for that matter, when all this happened. You're trying to
do this, you know, thousands of mile bike ride raising
money for charity. Your phone's going off constantly, and then
the worst possible news that you guys can get you get.
(02:43):
I just I don't know how you guys. I don't
know how you guys did it.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
My heart goes out for all the people of Curville,
all the parents that their children's were at camp, and
especially for all the parents that lost their children and
the people who were lost at the camps alongside that river,
and the families that have their homes washed away. It's
just it's broken. I mean, that's just never would we
imagine that level of a flood, thirty six feet of
(03:11):
a rise is just beyond comprehension. And I just hope
everybody comes together and they continue doing that, trying to
bring Curville, Hunt, Texas back together again and somehow they
find peace. So it's it's incredible, just incredible.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Wellie, how do you come back from something like that?
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Well, we got back on Tuesday, We got back on
our bicycles, and I will admit there wasn't a lot
of talking. There's no we're not fired up. We're just
botanically doing the bike ride because we know we made
a commitment we're going to do this bike ride. And
there's nothing more that we can do at home. So
first day was just silence, and even at the end
(03:53):
of the day, everybody it was a real you know,
push to just finish the day. And then every day
gets a little better. And so today's Thursday. We've got
sixty five miles were doing today and we're feeling a
little bit better. It's still on the forefront of our minds,
on our hearts, but yeah, we've set out to do this.
(04:14):
We've got two important causes. We're doing this for sudden
unexpected death and children. And if we could find a
way to stop children dying for no reason there was
some early warning that could happen, that would just be
amazing that that could happen and families don't have to
do that that children don't die any more because they
don't know that it's coming. That would be a blessing.
(04:36):
And then the other is helping the people, the children
and the communities around Haiti. I mean, doing all the
things that they do through Mission Lazarus is just off
the chart. So that's where our focus has to be.
And I will admit when we get on the bike,
it's a reminder we do a prayer before we set
off our own little journey just to keep our heads
(04:56):
and minds straight as to why we're doing this, and
then we get on our bikes and we do it
and it feels better. Fortunately, we're in Williams Lake right now,
which is, you know, a little south in Canada. We're
about three hundred miles from the border. Yesterday we got
to you know, the radio station here pulled us in
and we were able to do an interview and really
talk about it, and that just fills our heart because
(05:19):
we're telling people about two big missions that are important
to us and sharing it with other people so they
can be aware of it. Is a big part of
why we're doing this. You know, it is a financial
raising funds for these to charities, but it's also just
bringing the awareness so people can be aware that this
happens and there's need in Haiti that we would like
(05:41):
to have people just kind of know about, pray about,
and hopefully contribute to.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
For the families affected by the flood. Though, how do
you come back from that? I mean, unfortunately your family
has experience in childhood tragedies like this on more than
one occasion. What advice can you give to the people
affected directly by what took place in Central Texas.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
It hurts, you know. What happened in Central Texas is
something that no no family should have to go through.
Nobody should be bearing their own child. It's just not
meant to happen in that order. All I can tell
you is this is that every day you get a
little bit stronger. I don't think you ever get over it.
It will be a struggle for for the rest of
(06:34):
your life. And you need to remember that child or
that family member that that was taken. But at the
same time, you've got to go on. Just like this
bi ride, You've got to get on and just keep
on peddling. Even though the hurt is so intense, You've
still got to go through the motions and hopefully, prayerfectly
(06:55):
it will get better little by little every day, and
that the healing will never heal. That hole in your
heart will be there forever. But at least you can
function and you can see some good days on the horizon.
They are coming, but it's going to be tough for
everybody that's gone through this.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
All right, So my next question is this, in terms
of schedule, I mean, you guys were supposed to end
this whole thing in College Station. I think it was
going to be on September sixth something like that. Does
that now get pushed back by a week or do
you guys try to make up for the time missed
and still try to end at the same time.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
We did push forward. So Number one is we had
a schedule to take a break in Napa, so we
were going to take you three days there and another
two days further down the road just to kind of
take a break. So those breaks have now been canceled.
So we're on schedule. We're going to be there on time.
(07:57):
We're going to push and do everything we can do.
We're riding into College Station, We're riding into Kyle Field.
We can't we can't let that down. That we're excited.
That is the big push. Why I mean to be
able to be in front of one hundred thousand people
and tell our story to the people in College Station
for that game. We can't, you know, we can't let
(08:17):
that get pushed with stopping at NAPO or another some
other breaks that we were going to take. So it's
easily pushed. We're gonna be there on time. We're excited
about that you know, that is the horizon we're all
shooting for.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
All right, So I you know, clearly I'm not the
endurance athlete that you are doing all these you know,
doing all these thousands of miles, my paltry nine a
half marathons. Notwithstanding, I know that last year I was
training for a half marathon and then we went to
(08:49):
Italy for my nephew's wedding. That was supposed to be
a ten day trip and turned into more than two
and a half weeks because my mother in law passed away.
You don't train the same way while you're on that break,
and it pushes your training back, It pushes your performance back.
So what's your physical situation like now that you had
(09:10):
to take this break. How much did it actually benefit
you in terms of recovery or did it push you
back a little?
Speaker 1 (09:17):
You are so correct that it is hard to get
in shape. I mean it takes time and energy and
effort to get yourself in shape. It is so easy
to get out of shape. I mean we were you know,
that was a five day hiatus that we took, and yeah,
we could feel it. I mean our backs and everything.
Our legs are tighter today than they were, you know,
(09:38):
before we took our break, but we can see that
we're going to get back into that spot probably in
another couple of days. All the sores, the saddle sores
from the bike seat had gone away, and now they're
starting to resurface again. But we'll get back where we
need to be and we'll keep on pushing through it.
And you know, we're we're ready. We are, our minds
(09:58):
are straight. You know. To have the focus of praying
for and thinking about the families in Curville and and
Hunt and the families across Texas that were affected by
this flood, you know, really allows us to keep our
focus stronger on the why and bringing that awareness to
adding that to our equation has become a big part
(10:21):
of it.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
All Right, how can people follow you and how can
they donate to the cost?
Speaker 1 (10:27):
Please just take a moment go to brothersbike dot org
brothers bike dot org and what you'll see is what
we're blogging in there, so you can see our adventures.
We're going across the country or I won't say across
the world, but the continent almost, and you can at
that spot, you'll see SUDC a spot for moss Pratt
(10:49):
Foundation and you can donate there, or you can go
to Mission Lazarus and you can make your donation there
and read a little bit about those two missions and
why why we have chosen these and why we're strongly
promoted them as we venture across the country.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
All Right, until next time we speak, happy peddling.
Speaker 1 (11:10):
Thank you very much. I look forward for it.
