Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm Jeff Stevens. Thank you for listening once again to
Miami Valley View. We're always delving into great things that
are happening around the Miami Valley and this one is
near and dear to my heart because I'm actually involved
in this, which we'll get to in a second. But really,
this is one of the coolest things that I've seen
in a long time. It's called Holiday Hits for Hope,
and it's for all residents of not just the Daton area,

(00:21):
but well beyond that have a chance to hear some
great local artists and benefit an awesome charity. And Terry
O'Brien sitting to my left here as you're listening to
the radio. Terry, first of all, welcome and I just
want to commend you on this was your brain child.
This is pretty impressive.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Well, Jeff, thanks very much. What are you think of
me so far?

Speaker 1 (00:41):
It's impressive. It's impressive just to sit next to you.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
So thanks for having us here today, because this is
a great opportunity to kind of plug this a little bit.
We've had over seventeen different area musicians, bands, singers come
together each.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
To record a holiday track.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
Yeah, and then we're that holiday track online for free.
People can download it for free, play it off the
website for free, whatever they want to do. But we're
hoping that they'll get in the holiday spirit and then
hit the donate button, because then we're going to be
donating some money if they're willing to fund a little
bit to a charity that we're.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Supporting, Yeah, the Oasis House, which we're going to talk
a lot more about that here in just a second.
I think anybody that now, first of all, at which
point Terry, because this is this is your brain child.
You know where I'm going with this. When did you
bring in my man Gary here?

Speaker 2 (01:30):
All right?

Speaker 3 (01:32):
It didn't take long. Gary and I do a podcast
where you were part of the podcast.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Everybody has podcasts. We're all sharing podcasts together.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
It's the thing. It is the thing to do.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
But Gary Knight from the Fries band, and it's got
to be the Fries band, not to the Fries, not Fries.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Yeah. He you know, he has.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Every connection you could ever imagine. He knew you, he
knew all these other area bands. So I was basically
a man on my own until I reached out to
Gary and said can you help me? And he actually
called all these people.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
Well, Gary, everybody loves the Fries band, and I know,
being a stranger, we love playing some shows with you,
which I think we get to do next summer, which
is really fun, little little summer hint stubs park. But
who's you know, who's calling that out? But you knew
a lot as Terry was saying who to reach out
to about saying, all right, which band is going to

(02:28):
basically give their time, their studio time, their efforts, and
and you knew who to reach out to.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
Well, it was a win win situation. When I heard
Terry's concept, I just thought, goodness, this is, you know,
reaching out to the musicians, and if there's some kind
of charity involved, I'm diving in head first and saying
it's win win. So yeah, I just happened to know

(02:55):
a few people in a few bands, and he does.
And yeah, you know, doing is as long as I've
been doing it, I've been in contact with a lot
of really cool people and and anyone that I reached
out to they jumped on board.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
Yeah, I was very And what's funny about this is
it really didn't take off till you said yes, and
he said yes. Once you get the king I will
call you the Kingpin Bands, but you're the more popular
acts in the area.

Speaker 4 (03:25):
Right.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Once you guys said yes, the other ones felt like, shoot,
I gotta do this too. So well, that's nice of
you to say, yeah, everybody came on board.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
Well and and again when when you hear that, it's like,
first of all, I was like, oh, this sounds so great.
You know local Dayton area musicians, some who have been
some who are like brand new, like happening and ascending
right now, and some like you know, like the Fries
Banded Stranger who have been around for a minute descending.
I didn't say that, Yeah, you were thinking on the

(03:56):
descending side. Uh, you know, the fact that you know
they were all involved. I thought this will be such
a great thing because it's been a while. There used
to be like, you know, local compilations of local artists
and songwriting and different things like that. You know, in
the nineties, eighties and nineties and two thousands. Nothing like
this has been done in a while. So when you
said it, I thought, oh, the guys will be in.

(04:17):
I mean I basically spoke for him. I'm like, the
guys are in, We're in, and and then obviously you
know Alexis Gomez and Elise Wilkinson and and you know
some folks that I and actually actually Martins tracks. I
love brass tracks. So you've got all these holiday hits,

(04:38):
most of which are cover songs, some some originals on
there too. But what a chance to explore what's going
on with Dayton's music scene and then also benefit a
charity that just that just puts the that just puts
the bow on the present.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Yeah, if you will, well, you know, if I'm allowed
to speak briefly about the charities, we love the Oasis House.
They were so positive when we reached out to them.
She was very excited about it. We said, we don't
know if this will work, but we're gonna try. Are
you willing to take a risk with us or She
absolutely jumped on board.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
She was again the approach win when you know, hey,
if we say yes, if we make twenty dollars, you
know that that's nothing but helping our group.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
You know.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
It was funny when I reached out to other charities.
I placed phone calls and emails. They ever replied.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Back, really amazing, amazing, it was.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
I was kind.

Speaker 4 (05:31):
I called her and asked her if we had permission
for her to be in the running because there were
other I think Saul Gomez was going to look into
some other charities in the area. And she said, if
we're just even mentioned, I'm on board.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
I'm on board.

Speaker 4 (05:50):
And I said, I can't guarantee you it will be chosen,
And then when it was chosen, she was just ecstatic.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
That is so cool to hear. And by the way,
all the other charities that are listening right now are like,
wait a mint, I want to do this, but we're
glad to be doing this for the Oasis House. And
in case you're wondering, reading from their website, Oasis House
offers hope and support to female survivors of human trafficking.
It's unfortunately, a very real topic. It is, and it's

(06:17):
very real around here. Unfortunately. It promotes healing, empowerment, and
restoration through Christ's unconditional love. And a little bit about
what they did last year alone, over twenty six thousand
hours of safe housing where survivors could heal from trauma
and rebuild their physical health as they reclaim their lives.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
I mean, let me tell you a quick When I
called Donna, I said Donnie, you know this doesn't feel Christmasy, right,
I said, the charity doesn't feel like it's toys for tots.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Toy.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
Yeah, you thought it was a little dark.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
And then I thought, well does this fit?

Speaker 3 (06:50):
And then she went down this path to saying the
people she deals with it helps. When we're there were
kids did not have a chance to have a normal
Christmas all problem. Yeah, right, and I said, oh my god,
that's exactly what we need to help.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
Yeah. Yeah, it was really perfect.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
So yeah, you might not initially think it's a Christmas charity,
but wow, what an important time for these folks to
be able to have a Christmas. Correct, is obviously coming
up and the whole thing if you're just tuning in
talking to my friends Terry and Gary here, we're talking
about the Dayton Holiday hits for Hope local musicians. Seventeen total, right, yep,

(07:28):
seventeen total local musicians have done songs that you can
download for free. Soon we should talk about coming up
on November twenty fourth. It'll be on the Apple and
Spotify platforms, right.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
Correct, Right now, it's on a dedicated website that anybody
can get to and download for free. But we also
want to make the songs available to those people who
are locked into iTunes and things like that Apple Music,
so you can get them in download from there if
you want to.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
And the current website is somebody wants to listen right now.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Current website is Holiday Hits for Hope dot org.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
Holiday Hits for Hope dot Org. I mean, that's just
that's meant to be.

Speaker 4 (08:06):
I know, it's a little fun alliteration.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
I'm surprised the website was available, but we got it.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
I know, that's impressive. So you could listen right now
at Holiday Hits for Hope dot org or starting on
November twenty fourth, everything will be on the on the
streaming platform.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
Spodify, Apple, the whole works.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
Yeah, Gar These again, these are free for people except
when they get them from Apple.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
Apple will be trying to charge you for them.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
So if you don't want to pay Apple, just come
back to the free website and get them from there.

Speaker 4 (08:35):
Now. If you already have an Apple account.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
Oh, it'll be on there.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
It's on there.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
It's on there.

Speaker 1 (08:39):
Good, that's what we Yeah, that's that's that's a very
good point. I'm glad you said that. The The other
thing is, as we were saying benefiting the Oasis House.
You're you're not. It's not like a portion of the
proceeds or anything like that, because it's all free. So
what we're asking for you to do is to enjoy
the songs on there, enjoy the artists. Maybe here's some

(09:00):
artists that you've never been exposed to, and hopefully you'll
feel compelled to make a donation.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
Right, not mandatory, it's an optional thing.

Speaker 3 (09:08):
Click the button if you want to donate five to
ten two dollars, it doesn't matter.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Anything will help.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
Yeah, and all of that will benefit the Oasis House. Gary,
what did you guys, What did you guys talk about
say when you said, all right, here's what we're going
to land on for the song we're going to do.
Let's hear about the be a touchy subject. Oh boy.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
Yeah, it's a song that the trio had done and
it was a remake kind of of Bare Naked Ladies
doing We three Kings and Gentlemen, and we blended those
two and then I thought, well, you know, we have
four main vocalists, so we're going to really rearrange this

(09:48):
so each person has their own vocal. Okay, so lead
vocal lead vocal, lead vocal, and so we took turns.
Most of us uh showed up over at Terry's and recorded,
and one didn't, so I had to. We used a
trash track that was supposed to be used for our

(10:11):
bass player and he never made it over, so he
use my trash track, which would have been nice to
really redo. But you know, Terry's been bombarded for the
last couple of months because I think when we came
in and put our guitars on first was the first

(10:31):
week of September.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
Yeah, I was just I was looking back at my
emails when you first sent I think it was the
first week of September. So really this project has been
has been cooking for about three months and a lot
of work. So we do have to give Terry a
big shout out because you had a big shade a
parade of musicians coming to your house up and down
the steps and going into that cool studio down there,

(10:54):
and you gave a ton of your time and Gary,
I know you have to.

Speaker 4 (10:59):
And he he didn't quite have the space for a
band like brass tracks, right, So we brought in another
recording studio. In the first first flight recording in Fairborne
and Mike Stark took care of I think three of
the bands.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
So Alexa recorded in Nashville somewhere.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
Yeah, yeah, normal studio.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
She records that you recorded it, you record some at
my place, but then your guy down at Mountain Road record.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Yes, yes, in uh Cincinnati area but yes, So shout
out to to Mark Leggot and Jerry Last guys. Yeah,
he's we've we've everything we've recorded over the last five
or six years has been with him, and so he's
got us dialed in. You know. The first thing we
had to remix with him, you know, probably it was
it probably felt like it took weeks. But now, I

(11:44):
mean he just knows what our band is about and
can just dial it right up. So it's it's pretty
impressive how they're super talented. They worked with Blessed Union
of Souls and they currently work with Joe Jordan who's
having a great, great launch in the country, world world
around the area too. So he's streaming, you know, millions
a day and that's all coming right out of that studio.

(12:06):
Y the fantastic, but a lot of collaborations, but I know, Terry,
a lot of it landed on your studio.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
So I was happy to do. I love to record,
love to mix, love to write. So it's all right
up the old alley, so to speak.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
Yeah, all right, well, I want to thank you guys
for joining me. We have just a few more minutes
so to kind of wrap this up. If you're just
tuning in, it's called Dayton Holiday Hits for Hope, and
your mission was basically to use the power of music
to bring.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
Yeah well again.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
It was just to kind of get the Airy musicians
back together, focus on one project cond like we used
to do in the eighties where they had the best
band and dateon kind of thing what it was. It
was kind of to do that, but focus it on
Christmas music and let everybody take their own choice for songs.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
Yeah, well it worked out great. Again there's some hits
that you know and love from the holidays. I do
want to give a shout out to our keyboard player
Brian Elias from Stranger, who decided to an original great
song and he wrote I told her the first time
he played it for me. He played me the demo.
I said, Brian, you've crafted a classic Christmas song.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
I don't know how you do that, but yeah, yeah,
so I need to check his phone for like AI
or something mixture, just kidding, just kidding, Brian. No, he
really wrote a classic sounding Christmas song could take off,
I know, so how fun would that be? But so
Brian did a great job of that and then he
basically corralled the rest of Stranger here. So but we

(13:31):
really hope that you guys will go out and listen
to this. We hope you enjoy the songs. Every musician
is right here in our backyard that you get to
hear of all seventeen tracks and many of which you
see playing at coffee shops and festivals and if that's
all over town, yeah, and beyond in some cases. So
but the big thing we do want to make a

(13:51):
big push in the last minute here for Oasis House.
They are doing work that none of us can probably imagine.
What they what they see and what they go through,
and they're doing it. They're doing it. So all you
have to do is basically it's you know, it's not
like how many times you listen to the song or whatever.
We hope you enjoy the music. Let the music remind

(14:12):
you to give from your heart or a donation of
as Terry, as you were saying, basically, any amount.

Speaker 2 (14:17):
Any amount, we'll take it. Just to let you know.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
If you like a song, shout out somehow, let us
know that you like that particular song. I know Gary
would love everybody to tell us how much they like
We Three Kings.

Speaker 1 (14:28):
Yeah, and that's a good point too. If it is
something where you listen and you like some of the songs,
hey share them on social media. Spread the word out
there with your own social media following to get the
word out there, because the more people that hear this,
the more donations could come in for the Oasis House.
That is correct, Terry and Gary, thank you guys so much.

(14:49):
It's Holiday Hits for Hope dot org. That's the website
and remember it launches on all of your favorite streaming
platforms on November twenty fourth, dayton Holiday Hits for Hope.
Thanks for coming in, guys, Thank.

Speaker 3 (15:01):
You, thank you.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
