Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the NFL Draft.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
I mean to you live from the Virginia Mason Athletics Center.
This is the twenty twenty five NFL Draft and brought
to you by cors Light, by R and R Foundation
specialist the Queen Anne beer Hall, and by Fox thirteen
on Sports Radio ninety three point three KJR FM.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
All right, boys and girls, back here at the NFL
Draft at the Virginia Mason Athletics Center.
Speaker 4 (00:26):
A big thanks to our sponsors, Queen A.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Beer Hall, Fox thirteen, R and R Foundation specialist Frostburg
cours Light. The Raiders are on the clock, rat right
now at number fifty eight. Bet Carroll's made a ton
of moves, a ton of trades, by the way, in
this draft so far, moving down to accumulate as many
picks as possible. The latest pick, Tate Ratlin's guard from Georgia,
went to the Lions at fifty seven, preceded by your guy,
(00:51):
I know you've been a big fan of this guy,
Ozzy Trapil from Boston College offensive tackle.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
IM I was a big fan of Ratlets.
Speaker 5 (00:57):
That's right.
Speaker 6 (00:58):
Just all my pass just went to the Bears. Oh
he were fifty six. Oh, Tate Ralets just went to Lions. Yeah,
they already have a good line. I'm going in reverse
order here.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Trey Harris wide receiver ole miss Chargers fifty five, So
Raiders on the clock right now at fifty five, and
just took Jack Beck the wide receiver from Texas Christian. Again,
just recapping everything the Hawks have done. You've been working.
You got a real job. You can't pay attention to
the radio watch the draft all day long like we can.
Seahawks yesterday taking Gray's Abel Garden from North Dakota State
(01:29):
at number eighteen. Today they traded number fifty two and
eighty two, moved up to thirty five with the Titans
and took safety Nick m and Wari from South Carolina,
and then at number fifty just moments ago, they drafted
tight end Elijah Arroyo from Miami.
Speaker 7 (01:44):
He was the fourth ranked tight end coming out of
high school in the country.
Speaker 5 (01:46):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
I love it.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
There's only one man that we would have on to
talk about Miami Hurricane football, only one person that trust.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
Unfortunately that guy is not available.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Static. We have our friend Mark James.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
Mj in the midday joining us right now.
Speaker 8 (02:02):
How are you, pal, Hey, softy Dick Q. What's going on?
I'm just the later right now. John Schneider's three for three.
Not even Ted Williams could get anywhere near batting one
thousand in this drafts.
Speaker 9 (02:13):
Are on fire. No, seriously, em and worry.
Speaker 8 (02:16):
I mean that guy, Oh my god, that's a first
round talent in the second round. And you know, I
know a little about Elijah Royal, a lot about Elijah Royal.
And I feel like I manifested this into the universe
of ninety three to three and kJ R talking about
it and Hugh knows this and over and over and
over again, and finally it's come true.
Speaker 9 (02:36):
Thank you, John Schneider, Thank you.
Speaker 6 (02:38):
Well, there's no question that you've been beating this drum
for ever since you got to Seattle. So you, for
those who don't know, you're a lum of the U.
You're a decades long fan of the UH. You've seen
many of these games, you know, you know them intricately.
Give us a scouting report on Elijah Arroyo.
Speaker 8 (03:00):
Okay, first and foremost, his freshman year, he played all
twelve games. His sophomore and junior year, he only played
a total of eleven games because he got hampered by
knee injury, so that was his sophomore in junior year.
This past year he was able to play the entire season,
was healthy for the first time since his freshman year.
Speaker 9 (03:20):
Hugh, I've done some notes that you're gonna like this,
all right.
Speaker 8 (03:23):
He makes rout adjustments to help a scrambling quarterback. Now
that doesn't really bode well for Sam Darnold because he's
not a scrambling quarterback, but just so, he's got soft
hands that can catch the ball and he comes off
the ball with low pads and listen to initial contact.
Speaker 9 (03:40):
Is that okay with you?
Speaker 1 (03:41):
You liking yep? So far?
Speaker 9 (03:44):
Yeah, okay, I will say this.
Speaker 8 (03:49):
He's gonna need more blocking technique work at the NFL level,
and his routes can be a little choppy, so he's
not perfect. There's a reason he's in the second round.
He didn't go where Lovelin went last night to Chicago,
but that can be worked on. He has blocked well
because that's what Mario Christobal and the O line coach
at Miami required him to do. In addition, Hugh, you
(04:12):
were at the game. He had a great game against
Florida in the swamp to start the year. So I
think this is a home run kick. I just can't
believe it because I wanted it to happen so bad.
I was really upset when Mason Taylor went off the
board because you know, we could have. You know, been
great to see Joey Taylor come to Seattle.
Speaker 9 (04:29):
But Elijah Royal I made Elijah Arroyo. Thank you. Thank
you John.
Speaker 8 (04:35):
By the way, when I say thank you, John Schneider,
I'm not putting yo you, I'm just putting the letter you.
Speaker 9 (04:41):
Thank you, Josh Sneider.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
The you, Yeah, thank the you. Yeah, I got it.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
Mark.
Speaker 7 (04:45):
I'm impressed with the touchdown numbers, I mean eight in
his last twelve games, but you know, the overall the
catches in the yards, why didn't they get him involved more?
If he is this much of a stud With the
nation's best.
Speaker 8 (04:55):
Quarterback, right Jacolby George, you had Xavier or Strepo, what
you had the most explosive offense in the history of
NC double A And listen, I'll tell you this. I'm
gonna give you Shannon Dawson is one of the best
offensive coordinators in the country. There was a lot to
go around, and you know, Cam had to keep everybody happy. Now,
(05:16):
with that being said, let me just give you a
synopsis of what how Miami season ended. They're up twenty
one to nothing against Syracuse, so they blew the lead,
but they get towards the end of the game, they
have no timeouts left. They can't stop Syracuse Kyle McCord,
Trevor Paanea Ronde Gapson Junior. So Miami's down at Syracuse's
eight yard line with two and a half minutes ago,
no timeouts left, its fourth and goal at Syracuse eight
(05:39):
yard line. Miami's down by seven. Mario Crystobal game day.
Dumbass takes a field goal, so they kick off to Syracuse.
Don't even try to don't even try to squim it
or anything on sidekick. Syracuse runs out the clock because
Miami's defense couldn't stop a nosebleed instead.
Speaker 9 (05:59):
Of cam Ward throwing it to a six foot five
Elijah Royal in the end zone.
Speaker 8 (06:04):
Either getting a touchdown, pass interference or both. Yeah, and
that's why, you know, so you got to understand something.
I know you look at the numbers, like, whoa why
did they Tyler Warren? Who else was Joe Aller throwing
to cam board had an embarrassment of riches on that offense,
including Xavier or Strepo, Jacobe George. This team was absolutely
(06:24):
Samuel Brown transferred from Houston.
Speaker 9 (06:26):
So there was a lot to go around.
Speaker 8 (06:29):
And that's why you don't see the Gudie numbers at
touch for touchdown catch.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
Yeah, Mark, how much speed have you ingested so far?
Speaker 5 (06:36):
Today?
Speaker 3 (06:37):
And caffee Mark James with us MJ and the Midday
with us on the radio show, And yeah, you're right.
If this guy played for Penn State instead of Tyler Warren,
maybe he puts up a thousand yards right, and you know,
guess in that offense for sure. But there's been a
lot of great tight ends that have come out of Miami,
obviously Jeremy Shockey, Kevin Winslow, Bubba Franks, Greg Olsen, David
(06:59):
and Joko. Where would you I mean, obviously those guys
were bigger names maybe at the time than this kid is.
But where would you put him on the list of
the all time great Miami tight ends?
Speaker 9 (07:09):
You think, oh, that's a saftie.
Speaker 8 (07:11):
That is a really tough question now, going you mean
in his career it's gonna have to be just based
on his career at Miami.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
So far, what skill, what you think he'll do moving forward?
Speaker 5 (07:21):
Now? Right?
Speaker 4 (07:21):
Whatever?
Speaker 8 (07:22):
I think it's I think his his ceiling is higher
than a lot of those guys.
Speaker 9 (07:28):
You Jimmy Graham's to get his tight end to ever
play it right. There's no doubt about that. Olsen was
good too.
Speaker 8 (07:34):
The problem with Olson and I went to school with
Greg Olsen in Jiny Graham Olsen. As soon as you
he can never make it past the initial point of contact.
Speaker 9 (07:43):
As soon as you touched him, he went down. That
was his biggest issue.
Speaker 8 (07:47):
Jeremy Shockey was amazing for a little bit and then
injuries hampered him. Bubba Franks, I would put him softy
somewhere down that list because you're talking about like major,
major tight ends who are absolutely unbelievable. So I would
put him a little bit down below there, probably below Olsen,
but maybe a little maybe prior maybe above Bubba friends.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
Yep, all right man, good stuff.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
Yeah, no appreciating guys.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
Enjoy the weekend and try to keep your pants on
if any more Hurricanes get drafted.
Speaker 9 (08:19):
All right, pal, well it's two. I already took him
down one.
Speaker 6 (08:22):
So Jay in the midday o'clock on Monday morning recapping
everything happening in the draft.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
All right, So, I mean I feel pretty good about
what the Hawks have done so far. I mean I
just got a vibe for what do you think John
Schneider and Mike McDonald have done. Gray's Abel yesterday, Nick
emm and Warri today. Arroyo from Miami. I'm just looking
this up that who is the kid from Carolina that
barely played at Carolina quarterback? He played like a year
or two and got drafted high Trubisky.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
Correct.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
They just drafted three guys that have played a combined
one hundred and thirty five games of college football. Six
for Elijah Royo, thirty seven for m and Warre, and
sixty two for Great Exable.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
These guys are ready to go now.
Speaker 6 (09:08):
Yeah, I agree with you, and I think that there
is a little bit of a injury factor. You had
a torn acl by a Royo and and so he
missed uh uh, I mean he played he had just
where I'm sorry that I lost the staff for a second,
But prior to twenty twenty four, he hadn't done much
(09:29):
in twenty twenty two and twenty twenty three of anything.
I think he had seven catches in those two years combined,
and and so you know that that undoubtedly dropped him.
Some can I interrupted for this is Mike Green just
went to the Ravens at fifty nine?
Speaker 4 (09:44):
How about that.
Speaker 6 (09:45):
Baltimore freaking Ravens just got Mike I got, and they
got Malachi Starks? Right, first, how does this happen? And
the Ravens in the AFC, the Eagles in the NFC,
It's like there's there's some organizations they they linger in
the back and then everybody just thinks that all these
players I don't know positional, but I don't know.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
What they think.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
It's amazing.
Speaker 6 (10:08):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, So they they got they got
the safety uh that they wanted obviously because they could
have taken uh em and Warri right, that's right. And
so they got the number one safety on their board.
And I don't know the top dressers. Yeah yeah, well
the sack leader in all of college seventeen.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
Back to your.
Speaker 6 (10:27):
Comments about Arroyo, Sorry, no, no, I think that that
clearly impacted him. But I'll tell you, I can remember
watching some of those tapes when I was studying cam
Ward that the thought never occurred to me that that
was a tight end, and you know, there's just a
smoothness and a speed.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
So when you're watching the game in person, because Clay's
down there, Yeah, you're watching the watch, You're watching this
kid run around the field, You're not even thinking tight end,
you know.
Speaker 6 (10:54):
I I had other thoughts on my mind. I maybe
a few more thoughts inside you. But when I bar,
I just remember Miami. MJ's right. I mean, they had
a ton of playmakers. It's like everybody they had, they
were just they were going down the field and they
were catching passes. But I particularly a couple of the
(11:18):
ones in the bowl game, I don't know, he just
doesn't move like a tight end. So good on the Seahawks.
Speaker 7 (11:24):
I kind of feel like I did in twenty twenty two.
I was going back through the Seahawks draft list the
last few years and trying to remember how I felt
sitting in this exact chair at the exact time after
they'd taken their first and second round pick. And I
certainly feel better than I did last year. But last
year we had a first and a third, so that's
not exactly the same. Witherspoon, I was worried about Jackson
Smith and Jing I like, But I go back to
(11:45):
twenty twenty two. You take an offensive lineman first in
Charles Cross, like they did this year. You take a
pass rusher that we didn't know a ton about in
boy A Mafy. I think it was more excited for
him and Worry than I was for boy Mafy. But
then I was super excited about Kenneth Walker. So I mean, overall,
I'm about as fired up as I was in twenty
twenty two, and that turned out to be a pretty
darn good draft for seating.
Speaker 5 (12:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
Well, we're sitting here right now at number sixty. Denver's
on the clock and the Hawks are still thirty two
picks away. If they got a whole round to go
before they make their next pick right now, excuse me,
eighty two my fault, So twenty two picks, no, no
time out, Rewind, I'm getting krabby, I'm getting cranky. I'm
getting tired. This one happened when I was thirty years old.
This is this is the fifty one year old softie.
(12:27):
They are picking at ninety two. They gave up fifty
two and eighty two to get em and Wari, so
the next pick they have as of right now, is
number ninety two overall in the third round. That is
the pick the Seahawks got from the Raiders for Gino Smith.
So as it sits today, and let's as we sit here,
if the Hawks don't move up, they're gonna be waiting
a while to make their next selection. Let's talk about
(12:47):
some of the storylines happening with the draft guys. Shador
Sanders obviously is trending all over social media right now.
I mean we are looking at number sixty. And don't
forget Dion Sanders got into a spat with the I
believe it was the father of a player that left
the football team a year ago, and he quoted the
guy saying that my son's going to be a top
five pick in the NFL draft. You remember that when
(13:07):
Dion Sanders said, I don't remember, well, I can show
it to you. I've got it.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
I totally believe you asked me if I remember.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
He said he's going to be a top five pick
in the NFL draft. And here he is at number
sixty and Shador is still sitting there. There was a
little controversy over the quote that was given to Tom
Pelasero from the NFL network, and clearly is a This
is a thought that a lot of people are on
the NFL share about this guy because there's been team
after team that need a quarterback and they're not touching
(13:35):
this guy, at least not yet.
Speaker 4 (13:36):
In the second round. In the second round is two
picks away.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
From being over.
Speaker 6 (13:40):
We have no way of being in everybody's head. There's
gonna be a lot of discussion and conjecture about how
much the don factor may or may not hurt Shador Sanders.
That's a fair question. But when you look at the
tape there, if you if you watch a highlight tape,
(14:01):
you're can go this guy looks good. If you actually
study the games and you see his pocket movement side
to side, he habitually will drift over to the side
he wants to throw. If he's throwing to his left,
he's almost in the lap of the left tackle, he
creates pressure for himself. Same thing going to the right.
(14:22):
His sack tape was the worst that I have studied
of all potential number one draft picks that we've studied
in the twenty seven years. Of the forty sacks that
he took, I had sixteen of them.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
All thirty two.
Speaker 6 (14:36):
Quarterback coaches would say those sixteen sacks are on the
quarterback period, and I had another six that would be
debatable some quarterback coaches. Right, So that's upwards of twenty
two out of forty over half.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
Right.
Speaker 6 (14:50):
He has a lot of quick game completions. There are
some downfield throws, but not as much as you would
expect from a number one. Number of impressive throws for
example that cam Ward has, it's like exponentially higher than
what you see, and and and Shuduar Sanders' last game
(15:11):
against b YU was about as bad as you could
ever imagine. Uh, I mean they got down twenty eight
to nothing to be byu they. I mean he was
missing just simple concepts, like like it's like his mind,
wasn't he in the game? He had two horrible interceptions.
He had in the entire game. I counted it two
(15:33):
impressive throws and the first one didn't happen until six
fifty six to go in the third quarter. And so
I just think that there are a lot of substantive reasons.
And then you take his proda where he's throwing wobbley
passes and he's he's lolly popping uh with with an
(15:54):
arc on outbreaking routes that were caught and they were
accurate throws, but they had such an arc on him
the receiver ran out of field and they were caught
out of bounds, Like like, that's that's nuts to me
that you would have a pro day that you would
choreograph that's your day. It's one thing if you go
to a team and on their workout, yeah, and they
(16:15):
and you run through and you're doing their route treet
for the first time. If you choreograph a pro day
and you throw two balls out of bounds, that that's
just not something you'd see.
Speaker 10 (16:24):
From first round draft.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
There's that tweet from right there by the way May
May first of twenty. Yeah, read it, read it, he
says he quote just quoted quoting he will be a
top five pick. Where is your son going?
Speaker 6 (16:36):
L L L L.
Speaker 4 (16:37):
I got no time today, L L L L, says
Dion Sanders.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
Yeah, And now he's sitting there. He's still there at
number sixty two, And.
Speaker 7 (16:45):
We got two of our big questions answered. They were
probably the most wagered on in Vegas, and that is
how many quarterbacks will be taken in the second in
the first round, and who will be the second quarterback taken?
And I think we haven't talked about this yet. I
am still trying to figure out what the Giants were
doing giving up two third round picks to move up
back into the first round ahead of the Falcons don't
(17:09):
need a quarterback, the Ravens don't need a quarterback, the Lions,
the Commanders to move up.
Speaker 4 (17:13):
Just who else besides them wanted to move up though,
and get that spot.
Speaker 6 (17:16):
That's the point that's potentially you get the with the quarterback,
you get the fifth year. So you'd much rather be
late first if you're the team, you'd rather be late
first than early second, because then you get an extra
year and so and you have to be you're right,
You're absolutely right. All those teams at the end of
(17:38):
the draft they have quarterbacks because they're good teams, right right,
You got you got twenty seven Baltimore they got a quarterback,
twenty eight Detroit they got a quarterback, twenty nine Wash
Commanders they got a quarterback thirty.
Speaker 7 (17:53):
My point as a quarterback didn't even go until after
their pick was going to be, meaning like nobody else
took a unless unless you're telling me that the Cleveland
Browns would have absolutely taken a quarterback with the first
pick in the second in the second round, what the
teams wanted to quarterback?
Speaker 6 (18:10):
What's relevant is the Giants their state of mind about
their perception of who might move into the end of
the second round. So now let's let's let's let's say,
for the sake of uh, there's some all knowing football
god that knows that Cleveland doesn't want Jackson Jackson Dart,
(18:32):
nor should centers. Cleveland's sitting there with what what do
they have today? Thirty thirty four? So they had two
early second rounds. They they may be the Giants may
be sitting there going Cleveland. They might not like Sitar Sanders,
but they might love Jackson Dart, right, they might trade in,
and so let's just make we love Jackson.
Speaker 7 (18:52):
They were ahead of they were ahead of what they
were already ahead of the thirty six. It would have
only been the thirty three that could potentially been problematic.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
What about other teams that wanted to trade up that
were behind the Giants.
Speaker 7 (19:04):
Okay, so you're saying, so you're saying, maybe I'm doing
revision's history.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
Now I'm going I mean, who knows, right, that's the point.
Who knows.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
I'm just saying that the Giants paid that price for
a reason.
Speaker 6 (19:13):
Any team, the Saints, the Saints, they took Tyler Shuck,
what you're the Giants? The Giants weren't looking at the
quarterbacks at those at the positions at the end of
the first round. They're not looking at their quarterbacks, right,
They're they're saying thirty one. Other teams could put correct
or at least all teams that want a quarterback could
(19:34):
not thirty one. Obviously, all the teams that could even
remotely want a quarterback, right, might have the potential to
move up at twenty six.
Speaker 7 (19:42):
With the ranks, But in hindsight, can we all agree
that most likely Jackson Dart would have been there for
the Giants at thirty five?
Speaker 1 (19:50):
Thirty four?
Speaker 4 (19:50):
I don't know, because that because they got him at
what twenty six?
Speaker 1 (19:53):
Is that correct?
Speaker 4 (19:54):
So thirty five we're talking they got him at twenty five.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
They they got him at twenty Houston and the next
and the giants next selection was what again, thirty four?
Thirty four? So we're talking how many picks nine thirties
even right? Okay, again, that's that's that's eleven picks where
another team that was sitting behind the Giants maybe in
the late thirties early forties, could have jumped them and
(20:19):
moved ahead and taken him Raiders name what exactly. So,
by the way, the Bears just made a selections Jamar
Turner defensive tackle, Texas A and M just went off
the board. So that means we're two picks away from
the second round being over Chiefs on the clock right now, Philadelphia,
and then we'll get round number three going. The Hawks
will be on the clock in the third round at
(20:39):
number ninety two. Steve Hutchinson, by the way, sat down
with us a few hours ago and talked about Gray's abel.
He interviewed him at the Senior ball What does he
make of this kid? We'll get Hutchinson's thoughts on the
first round draft pick for the Seahawks from yesterday next
on ninety three three KJRFM.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
Welcome to the NFL Draft.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
Out back to the Virginia Mason Athletics Center and the
twenty twenty five NFL Draft and brought to you by
gors Light, by R and R Foundation specialists, the Queen
Anne beerh and by Fox thirteen on Sports Radio ninety
three point three KJR.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
FAM Soon, girls, Dave Softey Maller with you from the
Virginia Mason Athletics Center. Hope you're enjoying the draft so far.
I know I am more with Humelon Dick fan in
just a moment. Big thanks to Jessmon McIntyre for producing
on the spot here at the vMac. Thanks to Shane Beemer,
head coach at South Carolina for joining us as well. Seahawks,
(21:37):
if you haven't heard, moved up earlier today. They traded
pick number fifty two and eighty two to the Titans
and drafted Nick Amanwari safety South Carolina at number thirty five.
They then turned around at number fifty and took tight
end Elijah Arroyo out of Miami.
Speaker 6 (21:54):
As of right now, the Hawks are off the clock
for a while. Next up they'll be at number ninety
two in the third round. That is the pick the
Seahawks got from the Raiders in the Geno Smith trade.
Grey's Abel obviously was the selection yesterday at number eighteen,
and an old familiar friend, Steve Hutchinson Hall of Fame guard,
highest drafted guard and Seahawk History stopped by the radio
(22:17):
show a couple hours ago, gave us his thoughts on
his role with the Seahawks and what he makes of
the newest guard from North Dakota State.
Speaker 10 (22:24):
This is my seventh draft, and uh, you know, I
work primarily on the on the on the college side,
working strictly with the offensive line. So I and you know,
like those that know the scouting world, you know, we
have we have great guys that work in this organization
and there you know a lot of them are signed
to areas, right, so you have a geographical area of
the country that encompassed those schools in that area. Well,
(22:45):
unlike them, guys, I don't have an area I kind
of handle. So I get like all the top names
of like draftable and some of the top priority free
agent guys, and that comes to a list in me
and I watched them and over the course of the
fall and in the winner, and I write my reports
on them and put my grades on them, and then
and then in the once the the All Star season starts,
(23:07):
that's kind of when I start traveling. I'll do a
little traveling here or there, watch guys in the fall
on some occasions, and then go to the combine with
the rest of the guys and up here for draft
meetings and then you know, ultimately up here for this
week and and you know, it's the great thing that
John does, is you know John, and I tell John
all the time, he does a really good job of
letting everybody kind of put their two cents and ultimately
(23:29):
it's his call and who gets picked where and that.
But like so, you know, I try to give from
my perspective. You know, there's a lot of a lot
of talk these days about you know, all these systems
and how to find and and what's the best way
to find the guy? And I always try to remind
these guys in this position group talking offensive line, there's
a there's a sense of in tangibles that you always
(23:49):
want to try to relate to. Now again, at the
end of the day, the guy's got to be a player, right,
But but how he's gonna fit with the guys that
that room's a you know, and you know, like that
room's got to be on the same page from personality
and a pushing and a competitive standpoint. So I always
try to add a little bit of that into it
when when I'm giving my two cents.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
Well, Steve Hutchinson's with us, and this kid is the
highest drafted guard since you yeah, right, seventeenth, So plug
and play. I mean, obviously he's got to come in
right away. Right from a player perspective, you mentioned all
the intangibles.
Speaker 4 (24:21):
There is he a fit culturally all that stuff?
Speaker 5 (24:23):
Oh yeah?
Speaker 6 (24:23):
From a player perspective, what is it about him that
you really really love?
Speaker 10 (24:27):
Well? First is his athleticism, his ability to finish, like
his mentality. That's what I like, you know, that's what
I look for when I look at these guys, especially
in today's college game. You know, everybody's you know, it's
funny when twenty five years ago, when I came out
like every guy could get in a three point stance
and run block like you like if you watched nine
(24:48):
on seven drill, you think everybody was a first round pick.
Then you get to the pass protect you're like, oh,
well that's why this guy's not being talked about, or
he can't move his feet or something. Now kind of come,
you know, flip completely opposite. Now, these guys are so
big and strong and fast and athletic, and everybody in
the game in college is so predicated along the pass
and getting you know, guys in space and moving their
(25:09):
feet and mirror and stuff. And with the zone scheme
now it's a little different. So when you see a
guy that has some of these old school traits in
the characteristics, is like wanting to come off and drive
and finish guys down the field and put guys on
their back and take that mentality to it, but also
have the finesse part of his game where he can
do all that other stuff. It's you know, they don't
(25:30):
come around all that often.
Speaker 6 (25:32):
So Hall of Famers Steve Hutchinson with us, and as
you're watching him, you know, the concern of the question
maybe some Hawk fans and say, okay, he's the FCS
and you know, played nine hundred and sixty one snaps
at left tackle last season and he's played some guards,
so about fifteen percent of his snaps were at guard.
Speaker 1 (25:49):
So is that a.
Speaker 6 (25:51):
Challenge for you watching the tape in two respects, you're
you know, he's left tackle for a lot of it,
or right tackle, and then the fc S level, how
much of that is a challenge for you?
Speaker 10 (26:02):
Yeah, I mean on paper you look at it and
goes out of concern, but you know, what you got
to understand is there's probably in the last five to
seven years, I think there's five or six, you know,
high quality starters in the NFL that came from North
Dakota State just that college, you know, and so whatever
they're doing there, they're preparing them guys. Whatever their coaching
staff and whatever their level competition is, they're they're they're
(26:24):
making the transition pretty easy. You know. You can just
look at the last two three years alone at the
senior ball. Some of the standards have been from NDSU.
You know Cody Mock you know, a year or two
ago that's in Tampa now, you know, guys like that,
So they I don't know if I would I would
consider from an from an off offensive linement standpoint of
(26:46):
NDSU being a sub you know, however, you want to
classify a Division one, double A whatever they call on
the FCS, like, I don't. I don't know if because
like I said, they put them out there. As far
as left tackle thing goes that that that just shows
his his his ability to move in space. Right, that's
that's a plus. This guy has played guard in the past. Uh,
(27:08):
obviously that's where we're talking about using him here now.
But the other thing he can do is he could
play center. So you've got a guy that can line
up at five positions. Now, do we want him the
line up five positions? No, because that means we haven't
figured other things out. But we'd like him to find
you know, the key to is get your best five
on the field at the position that you think they
will help everybody out. Right now, we're you know, I
(27:28):
think Mike is not saying anything. I don't think anybody
already knows we're playing out a left guard. But that's
why you go through the OTAs you see who's healthy,
who's who's who's back, who fits where they We think
that they should give us the best chance and start
building some continuity in that room.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
Steve Hutchinson joining us way back at three o'clock today, Uh,
pretty good to have the Yoda of offensive line whisperers
right on your staff working with Gray's able man. So
good stuff from him. I thought his point about North
Dakota State eight and Mike Holmgrian kind of backing it
up that this is not like you're just drafting a
lineman from an FCS school. You're drafting a lineman from
a school that has a habit of producing offensive lineman.
(28:09):
The twenty twenty one offensive line I believe won the
FCS Championship all five of their lineman plus two backups.
Now we're in the National Football League in twenty twenty two.
Jalen Sundell who's with the Seahawks. Obviously, Cody Mock who
started thirty four games for Tampa the last couple of years.
Nash Jensen who played for Carolina now playing in the NFL,
(28:29):
and then Mason Miller graduated. He's trying to make his
way to the NFL like Gray's Abel has. This is
a school that's got a habit of putting lineman into
the National Football League and some of them staying there
but joining us right now on the air from the
News Tribune.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
He's got the tight new haircut. Baby.
Speaker 4 (28:45):
Our friend Greg Bell, how are you man?
Speaker 11 (28:47):
I'm well, guys, good to see what do you make
come out here? It's you know, it's interesting to hear
Steve Hutchinson in that role. Yep, I covered the poison
pill in Tom Condon in that whole mess.
Speaker 5 (28:56):
Oh, and how the relationship has come full circle?
Speaker 4 (28:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (29:00):
Oh, he's a guru of offensive.
Speaker 3 (29:01):
No question, Well what do you make it with the
Hawks have done so far? Gray's Able yesterday, moving up
for Am and Warri today and then Arroyo the tight
end from Miami.
Speaker 5 (29:08):
This is the people's choice draft.
Speaker 11 (29:11):
It is usually everybody can see what their urgent needs
are going into every draft, right, and then we all
hope at the top and we all think at the
top of the draft they're going to address those needs
so that we think they're gonna zig. And then John
Schneider's eggs well, so far in three picks, John Snider zigging,
he's doing everything that we thought they need to do.
Address the interior of the offensive line with a first
(29:32):
round pick for the first time since Hutchinson in two
thousand and one, and address him with an FCS player
that they've never.
Speaker 5 (29:38):
Done in this regime in the first round.
Speaker 11 (29:41):
Nineteen ninety nine is the last time they had a
lower division player round on Lamar King. You remember in
the defensive end.
Speaker 4 (29:46):
Oh yeah, don't bring that up to Mike.
Speaker 5 (29:48):
All right, it starts. I waited.
Speaker 1 (29:50):
I waited till he left the building.
Speaker 11 (29:52):
But that's the last time they went outside the Football
Bowl Subdivision Division one for a first round pick. I
thought they had to get tight end. Suddenly no offense
in the last year of his contract. Again they keep
re upping him on short term deals. He just has
a two year contract. AJ Barner is just in his
second year, although an impressive rookie season. And then that's
about it. They just knew Brady Russell from tight end
(30:13):
to fullback, so they needed a tight end. They go
get one an Elijah Royal who has a more stretched
the field, down the field tight end who needs to
work on his in line blocking to get a lot
of reps as a rookie, because that's what this offense
and Kyle Kubiak's outside zone'm gonna do. And then Nick
emm and Worry is such a Mike McDonald pick. They
Emma Worry was really open with us on the speakerphone
(30:34):
call about how McDonald has already said you're gonna be
like Kyle Hamilton for us. He flat out mentioned, we're
gonna use you like I used Hamilton. Yeah, And of
course Hamilton sixty four two twenty and used him all
over the field near the line of scrimmage outside inside
Nickel safety posted that's.
Speaker 7 (30:52):
What they're gonna try to do now with a six
four to two.
Speaker 11 (30:54):
Twenty m and worry and of course he's gonna be
the people's favorite for saying Cam Chancellor's off.
Speaker 3 (31:00):
It's very smart. By the way, the third round has begun.
Giants Touck Darius Alexander defensive tackle Toledo at sixty five,
and the Browns and the Chief Sorry after a trade
took Ashton Galatti Louisville edge rusher. So the Brown's now
up at sixty seven. Third round has begun. The Hawks
are next up at ninety two as well.
Speaker 6 (31:20):
I think it's interesting on the on the tight end
piece because ag Barner, you know, you know he's going
to make the team, right. But you go back and
you mentioned Clint Kubiak offensive coordinated for the Saints last year. Now,
they had significant wide receiver injuries Chris o'lavey and Rasizi
heat that point notwithstanding, I'll just say the numbers as
(31:40):
they were, that the percentage of plays where the offense
had two tight ends or more on the field, Seattle
last year twenty fourth in the NFL, the New Orleans
Saints first. Correspondingly, three plus receivers. Seattle was third in
the NFL. The Saints were thirty first, so that doesn't
(32:03):
mean it's going to carry over. But you've got an
offensive coordinator a year ago posted those numbers with his
personnel usage. So you can see the twelve personnel, which
is one running back, two tight ends. You one would
figure that that's going to go up if you like
how Royo and Barnard developing right to the two young Titles's.
Speaker 5 (32:25):
Where his blocking comes in.
Speaker 11 (32:27):
He's he admitted on our call, he's got to improve
in that all college tight ends do right. Sure, you're
not going to get drafted if you're not catching passes
in college football today, So that's an obvious need for him.
Speaker 7 (32:36):
Let's go back to yesterday and Zabel, when you were
talking to John Schneider, and a couple of things jumped
out of me. One he I thought, he admitted without
admitting that they would have taken Booker over. Oh yeah, Grazabel, absolutely.
I mean by saying I'd rather not talk about Booker.
Speaker 11 (32:51):
They but he talked about book being already had a
nickname for him as being a great guy, and Booker's
most people think he is like the best off field
guy in the first round.
Speaker 6 (33:02):
Can I just seed for one second. Yeah, I believe
the Seahawks had Grazabel the number one guard on their board.
I'm just gonna say, I'm just gonna say that precisely.
I chose my words careful, as the number one guard
on their board.
Speaker 1 (33:20):
Number one guard on the board was not.
Speaker 12 (33:24):
Booker.
Speaker 1 (33:24):
Is that because Booker was on tackle on it? No? No, no,
he was, he was. He was a guard. He was
a guard.
Speaker 6 (33:32):
I believe that the Seattle Seahawks had Grazabel number one
and Booker number two.
Speaker 7 (33:39):
Okay, And then along those lines the other thing that
I think I caught him in where and maybe you
did as well. He said, we felt that eighteen two,
and he he was he stopped himself. It almost sounded
like he was going to give another number, like eighteen
to twenty five was a sweet spot for interior offensive lineman.
But he said, we felt that eighteen to two where
(34:00):
we were was the sweet spot. So that tells me
they were absolutely trying to trade into the twenties and
weren't able to do it, so they just all right,
we'll just use eighteen.
Speaker 12 (34:09):
Is that is that how you feel?
Speaker 11 (34:10):
He said that, He said, we discussed trades, but nothing
was worth agreeing on we didn't get it in His
other words were it was very quiet that he didn't
have Usually he has multiple offers to pick through and
he picks his best one, and that's why he trades
down so much. The other thing is at eighteen other
than when they are at twenty and twenty one and
twenty four.
Speaker 5 (34:29):
We've talked about this.
Speaker 11 (34:30):
H When you're at twenty four, there are many years
of sales don't have twenty four first round grades on
that board. So why are you going to pick a
slotted first round contract with a fifty year option on
a guy who thinks second round talent. That's why they've
traded down so manything right, But at eighteen, they're more
apt to have a.
Speaker 5 (34:45):
First round grade, and obviously they had one on the table.
You know.
Speaker 3 (34:48):
The Browns just took Harold Finn and from Baldhead Green. Well,
here's the thing, it.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
Was our next quarterback team.
Speaker 3 (34:54):
Yeah, well that's what I was looking at here. Well,
I mean, my head's been down. Jets are the Jets
are quarter all? Yeah, suck, They've all had they've all
had multiple bites at this year. Raiders in theory would
be wekay i Rader Tom Brady connection.
Speaker 4 (35:10):
Yeah, we'll see he's got.
Speaker 6 (35:12):
You know, right now they're saying, Oh, it's got to
be here, he'd got to be he'd be perfect with
Pete too.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
Well, let's find out. You want to air this live?
You want to can we go to the to the podium,
go ahead.
Speaker 13 (35:23):
Commitment to excellence, and we are thrilled to get. With
the sixty eighth pick in the twenty twenty five NFL Draft,
the Las Vegas Raiders select Darien Porter, defensive Iowa States.
Speaker 3 (35:37):
Okay, so the the Browns have had four different picks
and they and they went ahead and passed on Shador
Sanders every single time. The Las Vegas Raiders uh and
Pete Carroll so far uh after that selection have had
three different picks and they passed on Shador Sanders. The
New Orleans Saints have had two different picks, and they
(35:58):
took Tyler Shuck with one of them. The New York
Jets earlier today, excuse me, the Giants took Jackson Dart
so they're off the board. The Jets have had two
picks the past and they've Yeah, Jets are next on
the clock. Pittsburgh has had how many picks as Pittsburgh
had so far because they took Derek Harmon. By the way,
sad story, Derek Harmon's mom died last night, if you
(36:20):
guys caught that or not, but she was able to
see her son get drafted. Oh and then she passed away.
The Steelers have only had the one pick so far
in Derek hard So the Jets are up in five
picks and then Pittsburgh's at nineteen. What do you make
of this story though, with shad Door Sanders falling like this.
Speaker 11 (36:37):
Well, one is, we all know quarterbacks get inflated because
of the importance of the position. But I'll see you
have to wonder if there's a Dion Sanders effect and
a blowback here. There were accuracy issues at his pro
day from NFL people I talked about, and I think
you I heard you mentioned if you inaccurate the pro
day that's as orchestrated and as scripted as you can get.
(36:57):
And there's a little bit show so yeah, show over substance.
Maybe that's some of it. You just you gotta wonder,
you hate the day retribution for Dion Sanders, a Hall
of Fame player, but an oversized personality within the league.
Speaker 5 (37:12):
I haven't been told that, right. You have to wonder
how there were so many people so off on him.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
Maybe not retribution for anything he did, but just don't
want to deal with something he may do in the future, Right,
So Greg, good stiff think is far more likely.
Speaker 1 (37:25):
What's Dave said?
Speaker 5 (37:26):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (37:26):
Right, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, great stuff, dude, enjoy yourself.
Thanks for coming on, Greg Bell with us from the
NFL Draft. We're gonna break Ian Ferness, Rob Rang, Hugh Millan.
We'll take you at seven. We'll see you know, we'll
see what he ends up to. Ian's been sitting around
doing nothing for the last four hours. We'll visit with
him next one.
Speaker 6 (37:42):
Ninety three to three KJRFM, Welcome to the NFL Draft.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
Now back to the Virginia Mason Athletics Center and the
twenty twenty five NFL Draft and brought to you by
Coors Life, by R and R Foundation specialist but Queen
Anne Beer, and by Fox thirteen on Sports Radio ninety
three point three kJ R FAM.
Speaker 3 (38:09):
All right back here at the Virginia Mason Athletics Center,
Day two of the NFL Draft. Round two is completing
the books boys historical Day. It was for the Seahawks.
They move up from fifty two and eighty two to
thirty five to grab Nick Eminwari safety from South Carolina.
Speaker 5 (38:28):
Cox.
Speaker 3 (38:29):
His head coach, Shane Beemer was on our radio show
and said that he has not had one problem with
the guy in school, misclasses, mis meeting nothing. He's a
model citizen in Columbia, South Carolina. Then at number fifty,
the Seahawks took Elijah Arroyo at tight end out of
Miami with the fiftieth pick overall, and just going off
the clock at number You'll love this sixty nine to
(38:52):
the New England Patriots Ian Fernessa's guy Kyle Williams. We
are through pick number seventy the Saints, another quarterback needy team.
Speaker 4 (39:01):
Here we go on the clock at seventy one.
Speaker 5 (39:05):
They did.
Speaker 6 (39:05):
They took Tyler Shuck. You're right, thank you for reminding me.
So four Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 12 (39:09):
Jets next, he's QB five at best.
Speaker 5 (39:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (39:12):
I mean really it's the jetson Steelers, right, we're talking
about what.
Speaker 5 (39:17):
Could happen.
Speaker 3 (39:18):
Well, I was just asking these guys, I mean, if
you can get like crazy odds on him not getting drafted,
would you put ten bucks on my would. I mean,
it might be that big of a pain in the ass.
I was telling these guys off the air, and I've
told the story before. It's not already a big deal.
But two years ago, we're in Vegas and by the way,
Ian Farnessa's here, in case you haven't figured that out.
I don't want anybody confusing you for you know, somebody else.
Speaker 1 (39:35):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (39:35):
We were in Vegas for media Day and we taped
a lot of our interviews because yeah, exactly, and he
sat down and he was so disinterested and what was
going on, Not that he needs to give a damn
who I am, right, whatever, but he's so disinterested that
we didn't even bother to air the interview, didn't even
bother to save it.
Speaker 1 (39:55):
We just got rid of it. And now I'm kicking myself.
I wish I had it for crying out loud. He
just soared answers and he said, that's fine. Done.
Speaker 3 (40:02):
We talked to him for like three minutes and he
was out the door, you know. I mean, it was
just forget about it that I had no desire to
be there. But you know what, but yeah, you can
find I don't know, dude. I mean Jackson's already looked
for it. I think we just blew it up from
the start. We never planned on playing.
Speaker 4 (40:17):
I think I'm telling you it's because I was producing
that day.
Speaker 12 (40:19):
So I don't know, like what day was it?
Speaker 14 (40:20):
You go, you know what, maybe it was a really
good interview.
Speaker 12 (40:25):
Yeah, it sounds like.
Speaker 14 (40:26):
It's interesting though, because you know, in the in the
process of interviewing guys for the draft, right, not not
media Day, but the interviews the thirties and the p
and the the combine and all those things. It's a
job interview, right, right, it's a job interview. Well, I
would take it one step further. When you're going to
a conference media day and you're one of the two
players Big ten, SEC, PAC twelve back in the day,
(40:48):
it doesn't matter, right, you're one of the two players
that your school selects to go to do to do
that and to represent your school in a media setting
with national media, local media and all that. If you
can't be bothered as he as Softy saying that to me,
he's a red flag like that. That that's like like.
Speaker 3 (41:08):
And I will tell you this that we've done some
bad interviews with players at media day. Sometimes it's because
they're just young and they're not accustomed to talk.
Speaker 7 (41:15):
I can't think of one of disinterest.
Speaker 3 (41:17):
One that was really bad was Justin Herbert. Actually, we
did an interview with Justin Herbert when he was a
younger guy, and he did he just wasn't experienced enough.
Speaker 6 (41:25):
He was really kind of raw, but he was super nice.
But he was very nice, very nice guy.
Speaker 3 (41:29):
But I mean, the Jets are on the clock, Dick,
as you pointed out, three picks away. The Saints just
took an offensive tackle from Texas at number seventy one,
So we'll see what the Jets doing a couple of
picks from now. But hey, everybody seems to be pretty
happy with the draft.
Speaker 6 (41:43):
Well, gotta be thinking Schneider likes that that the twelves
are fired up.
Speaker 14 (41:47):
I was just doing my uh my round two wrap
up and my blog and my analysis and my lead
was all thirty two teams got the players they wanted
so far.
Speaker 5 (42:00):
That's right, that's right.
Speaker 7 (42:01):
Yeah, but not all thirty two fan bases are equally.
Speaker 14 (42:05):
But every GM and every coach he was hired on board,
they have all drafted much like the old days of
letter of intent. Right, we got the exact everybody we
wanted in our drafts.
Speaker 3 (42:14):
Anybody ever, anybody ever said you know what, we tried
to move down.
Speaker 4 (42:19):
We couldn't find anybody, So we just took this.
Speaker 6 (42:21):
Guy, not publicly, because you know that's happened at some.
Speaker 1 (42:26):
Point that what Schnyder did with LJ. Collige maybe get stuck.
That's funny.
Speaker 14 (42:32):
I looked I was looking back at past drafts this afternoon,
and I'm like, wow, there was a stretch there that
was just.
Speaker 1 (42:39):
One where we were like, what about where is Michael Kristen?
Speaker 5 (42:43):
No first round?
Speaker 3 (42:44):
Or yeah that was the second round pick, right, christ? Yeah,
you know who went with the next pick after Kristen,
Michael tres Kelson. That's right, Yeah, that's right. So maybe
Josh is just throw a dart at the wall. I'm
gonna go be whatever you want.
Speaker 5 (42:55):
But what do you think? Are you?
Speaker 1 (42:56):
Are you pleased with what they've done so far?
Speaker 10 (42:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 14 (42:58):
I mean yeah, I I I I am. On paper,
I was trying to figure out if I was this
like looking through what they've done again, going through the
past drafts, this feels better than we've had in a while,
Like Witherspoon and and js N draft was good, like right,
like we had to kind of get educated. Who Devin
Witherspoon was a little bit, but jays An obviously was
(43:19):
exciting except for the time You're like, well you've got Lockett,
who was still you know, three years younger.
Speaker 12 (43:25):
And you got DK like like what are we doing here? Right?
Speaker 14 (43:28):
And Witherspoon was like this undersized corner, like is he
really that much of a badasses?
Speaker 12 (43:32):
We're all being told this one just like Jalen.
Speaker 6 (43:36):
Carter, you know, take it? Yeah, yeah, well by the way,
yeah there, no, yeah, I was. I was emphatic.
Speaker 3 (43:45):
I remember sure in hindsight, would you put with their
Spoon back and take Carter?
Speaker 6 (43:51):
Well, Carter's had a more of an impact.
Speaker 1 (43:56):
The thing is I love two years in a row.
Speaker 7 (44:00):
Oh, would you go back and trade Murphy for Jared Verse?
Speaker 1 (44:04):
Well, that one I didn't know. I did not. I
did not.
Speaker 7 (44:07):
You didn't have that.
Speaker 1 (44:08):
I didn't have that one. I wasn't saying to take
Jared Verse over.
Speaker 4 (44:11):
Would you put Kristen Michael back and take Travis Kelcey?
Speaker 1 (44:16):
Would you put d s back and and draft fre Dumphrey?
That's soft East, soft East? Oh you were yeah, you
beat that drum loud and hard.
Speaker 7 (44:25):
So ian, What's what would make you feel like they
had a complete draft. And I'm not talking about guys
they get in the sixth and seven, guys that actually
are going to make the football team, which is guys
are going to be going very very soon.
Speaker 14 (44:37):
Well to one more pick today and then the fourth
round talking about because fourth rounder is usually are.
Speaker 7 (44:42):
I'd say those those next three picks.
Speaker 12 (44:44):
I mean, I think they need a receiver.
Speaker 14 (44:46):
I mean, I think they got to get a wide
receiver right like, you know, I mean, Rob's got the
stat of the slowest wide receiver group in the NFL,
Like it's it's a pretty amazing stat.
Speaker 12 (44:55):
