Host Eric Paulsen is joined by Matt McLean from Visit Marshfield to preview the Central Wisconsin State Fair, which kicks off August 20th through the 25th. National artists performing live, rodeo, demolition derby and all the other fun Fair activity (including the "Kiss A Critter" contest), food, kids' events, and more. We also preview some of the great events leading into fall and winter including Maple Fall Fest and the Rotary Holiday Lights with LITERALLY MILLIONS of lights at Wildwood Park. Regardless of season, shopping in downtown Marshfield is pretty sweet, with unique boutiques, a great independent record store (with Dave's Guitars right there), plus a new candle company, ice cream shop, and more. Activities at Wenzel Family Plaza and the new Van de Hey Waters, a bevy of good restaurants, and art and history installations make for tons of fun activities in Marshfield. Outside of town, you can enjoy Jurustic Park and a variety of creameries and cheese factories, outdoor recreation at Powers Bluff and numerous state natural areas, golf, nature parks, and even one of Eric's favorite signs in the state - that tells you what the road is NOT. Also covered? Some good places to stay and of course where to catch local brews. We cover it all in this episode of the State Trunk Tour Podcast!

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to another episode of the State Trunk Tour podcast.
I'm Eric Paulson here in the twenty twenty four season.
This is episode twenty five, celebrating Central Wisconsin and the
Central Wisconsin State Fair coming up here. We are in
the middle of August and so many things are going on.
For example, this coming weekend, there's Irish Fest in Milwaukee,
Venetian Fest in Lake Geneva, the Sweet Pepper Festival in

(00:21):
North Hudson, the annual Ride to Remember from the high
Ground in Nilsville. That's a beautiful ride through Central Wisconsin
as they remember in salute veterans and their families. Find
out more at State Trunk Tour dot com. We have
all the weekend lineups going on. Also, National Record Store
Day is coming up on the twentieth, which is next Wedna,
next Tuesday actually, and we have forty five great independent

(00:44):
record shops across Wisconsin on the State Trunk Tour page.
Wherever you go in the state, you can be able
to find a great independent record store and we have
your guide so you can find it right there and
on our socials. And we are going to be talking
Central Wisconsin State Fair because that also starts Tuesday the twentieth,
all the way through the weekend, and we'll be talking
with Matt mclan the executive director of Visit Marshfield, about

(01:06):
that and other cool things going on in hub city,
which is a hub of activity in a very fun
place to visit. If you haven't checked out Marshfield, you
need to, and we'll explain why in just a minute.
Welcome back to the State Trunk Tour podcast and let's
get to it. Talk in Central Wisconsin State Fair and
a lot more in Marshfield. Mister Matt McLain, Hello.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Matt, Hey, Eric, how you doing.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
I'm doing great. How are things in Marshfield today? It's August,
It's got to be great.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yeah, it's good. It's not too hot today, thankfully.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Yeah. We've been in a nice stretch, great road trip
and weather as I like to call it. And of
course take us ten I was thirteen eighty ninety seven.
You'll find yourself eventually in Marshfield, home to Marshfield Clinic
and a huge bevy of great shops, great restaurants, great living.
Actually it's a very high quality of lifetown and city
to live in, and a lot of great events are

(01:56):
going on. I got to give a quick out to
my favorite, one of my favorite signs in the state, Matt.
You know how US ten is now an expressway between
Marshfield and Stevens Point, right the old road. The old
roads are two later and it's right by a quick trip.
But if you turn on it, there's a big sign
on there that that's extra standard sized traffic sign, but

(02:17):
it says not US ten. It's like, wow, did.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
They just put up there when it was US ten?
Then they just were not up there scribbled it in
marker or something that.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Would actually be a lot funnier. No, they customized a
sign and text that says not US ten. It's like wow,
but parallels ten. If you follow it, you end up
in the same place. Let's fine.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Yeah, yeah, I've taken that route a few times. It's
not too bad.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
It's funny. So yeah, Marshfield kind of Well, it's called
hub city for a reason, and you had hub city
days not too long ago. And you're also a hub
for central Wisconsin. And that's why I wanted to talk
about one of the big events coming up here just shortly.
In fact, it starts August twentieth. Is the Central Wisconsin
State Fair.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Yes, sir, that's one of our biggest events of the year.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
For sure. Fair Grounds has the world's largest round barn
on it. But they draw national acts, written national and
regional acts to the main stage, and there's a lot
of fun things to do. There's even it looks like
a special beer, a Rise and Shine beer for the
fair that I saw. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Yeah, the Rise and Shine is the kind of the
theme of the fair this year. And yeah, I gotta
have your own beer.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Right who's brewing that?

Speaker 2 (03:32):
You know, that's a good question. I don't know off
the top of my head. I'll have to investigate that though.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Yeah, I may have to get up there and try
it too. There's a lot of fun entertainment going on
all week long. Kenny Ahern's on there and he's you know,
he's fun and Goofy, the Pleasure Valley Pig and Duck Races,
the Hot Glass Academy. Can you watch glass things being
made and maybe participate?

Speaker 2 (03:54):
You know, I think you can watch them being made.
I'm not sure about the participation.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
Maybe insurance reasons, you never know.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Possibly, yeah, yeah, And.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
Like see, that's the funny thing because with Wisconsin, you know,
you have the State Fair in West Allis, there's a
Northern Fair in Chippewa Falls, and then the Central one
in Marshfield. And ostensibly the main reasons for those fairs
to have begun is so farmers could bring their animals
and showcase them and and things like that, and then
you'd have the food and the other things. And it's
obviously grown beyond that, but let's let's give a shout

(04:22):
out to the fact that our farmers and animals and
everything there that grown ups and kids alike can get.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
To get to know that is true. I mean, we
were right in the heart of you know, dairy country,
and so you know, there's a lot of farms around us,
a lot of great cheese, a lot of great milk
ice cream. You know, so you got to got to
give up for the farmers and you know, they do
what they do and this is a great time for
them to celebrate and us to celebrate with them.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
Yeah really, and yeah, you have some great cheese factories
and creamries around you see. Hey, for the Linde Dairy
not too far away Nasonville, and you can get into
those a little bit later. But for the fair, there's
some great acts coming to the main stage too.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yeah, definitely, I'm excited. I think kind of some of
the main ones that are jumping out at me or
Dylan Scott. For some country fans out there, Daughtry is
is probably one of the biggest acts we've ever had.
I think he was an American at a guy that
kind of has a huge career now. And then I
think one that I just keep hearing people really love

(05:20):
is the Hairball too. You know, it could be a
good eighties hair metal and you know, rock out.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
I love me that music. Yeah, if you're a def Leopard,
bon Jovie Motley Crue fan or any of those bands,
I mean there's we could dive deep into that. Hairball
is just a great cover band for all of those.
So Yeah, the thing is The Fair is August twenty
through twenty fifth. That's a Tuesday through Sunday. The Dweebs
start Tuesday night with a free concert in the Family Tent,

(05:45):
and then yeah, Dylan Scott headlines Wednesday, Hairball Thursday the
twenty second, Daughtry Friday night to twenty third, and then
there's other shows Saturday and Sunday. After Saturday night and
Sunday afternoon Rodeo.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, yeah, definitely, how the rodeo and Marshall for a
few years now and it's a great, great thing to
bring the family to. You know, see some some bulls,
some bronc ride and bear race and you know all that,
all that good stuff.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
And then the Demolition Derby that's always a popular one
on Sundays exactly.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Yeah, you can't go wrong with the Demo Derby.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
Some of the other things going on too. They're still
doing the Kiss of Critter contest.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Right, I believe so.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Yes, they probably didn't during COVID, but it's back now.
There's a dress are.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
You gonna Are you gonna do that? Are you gonna
do that?

Speaker 1 (06:31):
When I do the dress of cow? That looks like
it'd be even funner. How do you cut something out
to the utters? Right?

Speaker 2 (06:39):
How would yeah, how would you dress the cow? What
would your theme be? Maybe a hairball cow.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Anything but leather, something nice and comfort that would breathe. Yeah,
there's Midway Carnival rides to a lot of great exhibits,
the food and beer gardens, I mean fair food. You
gotta love it, right, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
You can't go wrong with elephant ears. I mean it's
I'm right now.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
Yeah, it's not the healthiest time of the year, but
it certainly is one of the most fun. So, yeah,
the Central Wisconsin State Family we have it on State
Trunk Tour dot com. We have those details, but you
can also go to Central Wisconsin Statefair dot com, which
was a pretty obvious url for it, right, let's go.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Yeah, definitely, we have some info on our website to
visit Marshall dot com. And oh you know what, one
of the events I don't want to forget to talk
about is we have the State Fair horse Pull and
the Draft Horse Show. And there's the horse pull is
Friday night and the Draft horse Show is Saturday. So
those are fan favorites.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
Okay, Yeah, that's pretty cool too. Yeah, and see again,
it's really all about the animals and then the food
and the live music and kissing critters and dressing up cows.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
Very true, very true. There's a lot to do.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
Yeah, kids can ride in the little train and everything.
It's just a great thing for the whole family. And again,
that's August twentieth through the twenty fifth, so check that
out if you get a chance. And then there's some
other great events coming up. You guys love to embrace
fall with the Maple Fall Fast.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
Yeah. Yeah, that's the visit of Marshfield. We get to
run that guy and so it's you know, lots of
amazing handmade arts and cross vendors. We get vendors from
all over the Midwest. And then we do a potato
pancake rather pancake breakfast that is a huge favorite. You
just serve over two thousand people for that, and that's
you know, it's just right around the corner. I think

(08:26):
people are already starting to think fall.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
Well, time's moving so fast. And yeah, every once in
a while in August you start seeing a few trees
with a few of their leaves change and you're like, oh,
but I think with that, and then Packer preseason going on.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Yeah, I agree, Packer preseason, and then everybody's talking about
back to school like I didn't want to see back
to school sales in July.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
Yeah. Fall comes at you like a freight train. What
are you going to do? Right?

Speaker 2 (08:52):
Yeah? Yeah, I guess get ready to come to Maple
Fall Fest September fourteenth and fifteenth.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
That's always a great one in mid September and the
weather's usually so beautiful in mid September, the leaves starting
to change. You're not in full fall color quite yet there,
but it makes for a beautiful drive to Marshfield. If
you're gonna come from Aprile Yeah fest, and if you
have maple syrup, I definitely.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
I would definitely agree. Yeah, we have quite a few
maple syrup venders and we'll have It's in a beautiful park,
Wildwood Park, just on the south and the town, right
next to our zoo, so you can check out the zoo,
check out the festival. And I think we're also having
October Fest that weekend with our partners Blue Hair and
Group up well.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
That same weekend. Nice. Yeah. Blue Heron always a great stop,
great food, great craft beer, and you know I love
meeting you there once in a while, so we can partake.
That's always great. And then Wildwood Park. See it's funny
because the Central Wisconsin State Fairgrounds has that fair but
a lot of events are in Wildwood Park right next
to the zoo. We mentioned Maple Fall Fest, and when

(09:50):
the snow starts flying and we're in the full holiday season,
the Rotary Holiday Lights, you have one of the largest
light shows in the state. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
Yeah, last count over two million lights and that event
runs the day after Thanksgiving through New Year's Eve, so
it's definitely have a good month and a few days
to come check it out. You can do a drive
through or walk through, and it's really one of the
largest events in town. Again, and it's also for a
great cause. The Rotary Club gets hundreds of volunteers and

(10:22):
we collect canned food and donations to enter, so it's
free to enter, but donation and or can food are
definitely recommended, and it sports over a dozen different food
banks and it's it's huge.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Yeah, you can walk through, drive through and enjoy those
millions of lights. Did the other lights in Marshfield dim
when this thing gets plugged in? Or what.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
They? Thankfully the club swished over to LEDs a few
years back, and so I think it's something maybe like,
you know, a couple of dollars a day or something
to round two million.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
It's good they burn a little cooler to see.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
We have a very comprehensive guide to holiday light shows
around the state and Marshfield's definitely one of the biggest.
It's one of the top ones we have on there
and definitely worth the trip. And you know, easy to
get to from any part of the state since you're
so centrally located. And Marshfield is so good for shopping too.
I love Marshfields downtown because a lot of downtowns are
small and narrow and they're kind of packed in, and

(11:18):
you have this big brad It's not a boulevard because
there isn't a big median in it, but it's Central
Avenue is a beautiful main street for what you can
tell is a city that's vibrant, and you have some
great restaurants there.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
Yeah, definitely, it's kind of had a reawakening the last
few years. We have the Winsliy Family Plaza downtown that
has a beautiful water feature kids can run through, and
there's actually we just had a Hub City ice cream
shop open there. They do the Chocolate Shop ice cream,
which is everybody's favorite. So that's right next to the plaza.
And one of my favorite restaurants is Mojo's kind of

(11:53):
a Cajun Italian mashup and so that's definitely something I
try to eat, and they have a really good trimp
Pole Boy that's probably my my go to.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
Sounds like good spaghetti too, Yes.

Speaker 2 (12:09):
Yes, spaghetti is good. I think the one that I've
never heard of anywhere else is a brisket alfredo. You
want to take a nap after you eat it, but yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
That is food right there. Wow, brisket Elfredo. I like
along with the restaurants, I like to, uh to see
how you profile the shops when you when you visit
Marshfield on Facebook, when you go to the Facebook page,
they highlight or you guys highlight. I should say a
lot of shops and a lot of great restaurants. Like
I'd give a shout out to Good Day Sunshine record shop.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Yeah that's right. I remember you're a vinyl lover. Yeah,
at a record store. They've been open a couple of
years now, and you know it's a great place to
find vinyl their I've talked to their owner, Danny, and
you know, she says she gets people from driving all
over because she has a pretty great selection that you
can't find everywhere.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
Yeah, it's very true. We've profiled forty five of them
around the state on State Trunk Tour and one of
the one of the best ones, especially for selection, was
Good Day Sunshine. It's got a great name. Any any
any Records Sturren named after a Beatles song, right.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
Yeah, Yeah, you can't beat that. One other shop that
we've been featuring recently too is called Kaylee's Candle and Company,
and it really has dozens of different vendors that kind
of make their own handmade products. A lot of them
are at our Fall Fust and so it's kind of
a fun newer store than around for a couple of
years as well.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
Yeah, got Dave's Guitars. I mean, if you're a music lover, Marshall,
it's a great stop.

Speaker 2 (13:37):
Yeah, definitely, Dave's Guitar is again another thing I droll
over may have some amazing guitar.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
And we've talked about Jurassic Park in previous episodes, but
there is still that juristic park walk you can take
down town. So while you're shopping and checking out restaurants,
you can also get some really cool art installations that
are really kind of they're not all on Central Avenue,
that kind of scattered through the downtown area.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
Yeah, definitely have about a two mile walk that you
know you can do in like twenty minutes and definitely
see a bunch of amazing art. It's creatures from the
Marshland that were dug up, is the story. And they're
very rusty, that's what it's called drastic And so you'll
see dragons, little frogs, little We have a turtle near

(14:24):
our office here that's i think made from a probably
like two ton bell. And see a lot of interesting
interesting artwork you can you can see here. And then
also on the edge of town is the home of
Jurassic Park just north of Marshfield and it's free pretty
much open ten to four every day and it's a
great place to take the family, take the kids. You know,

(14:46):
you can walk through and get a tour from the proprietor, Clyde,
and he is he's a character, so got to you
gotta meet Clyde. And then his wife, Nancy, also makes
some beautiful jewelry and sometimes you can see here with
a torch, you know, blowing making some joy glass and
beads and all.

Speaker 1 (15:03):
That good stuff. Yeah, she makes some incredible stuff. So
she has her own jewelry store with that too, and
and it's it's really cool to see. And Clyde's quite
what is he ninety's.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
He's creeping up there. I think last time, I think
eighty eight was the last that I recall, but that
might have been a year ago.

Speaker 1 (15:19):
Yeah, but yeah, he is very personal and very fun
and it's it's such a great trip. And if you
if you kind of like out to our adventure, there's
there's a lot of rural areas you can tour around
Marshfield too, And we haven't talked a lot about getting
out of town, but still close. Like the McMillan. Marsh
State Wildlife Area is right next to where Jurassic Park
is and there's some trails you can enjoy.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
Yeah, definitely some some trails there. North Wood County Park
is a great camping spot. They have a nice disc
golf course there. One other thing that's kind of newer
and exciting is the Powers Bluff has opened some new
single track bike trails. If you're a big mountain biker,
there is some new you know to check out. And
that's only about twenty minutes from Marshield as well.

Speaker 1 (16:03):
Yeah, that's very close. There's a Highway one eighty six
that connects US ten and Highway seventy three, which is
along the southern part of Wood County and kind of
about halfway there by Arpin. In that area, it's a
little bit east of eighty off of ten too, is
where Power's Bluff is and it's kind of a wood.
County is fairly flat and powers Bluff is just kind
of this thing that towers in the landscape, doesn't it, agreed?

Speaker 2 (16:27):
Yeah, it is our one place of elevation. And you know,
I was thinking, Eric, I might have to like record
your voice for my GPS, you know, turn left on highway.

Speaker 1 (16:37):
Happily do that. That would be fun to do man
narrate those things, right, Yeah, one of the cool things. See,
I know powers Bluff as a place where you can
go tubing in the winter.

Speaker 2 (16:48):
Yes, yes, that is a popular thing across our fingers.
We get enough snow. It's been a little tough year
for a lot of snow activities, but maybe with all
the precipitation this summer will lead to a lot of
snow this winter.

Speaker 1 (17:02):
Yeah, last year was a bit of a challenge, but
we you know, we tracked that too. We update on
conditions every week on State trunk tour dot com, so
we keep people on top of that and that's a
great way too. It's basically kind of halfway between Marshfield
and Wisconsin Rapids. I'd say so it's correct, yep, if
you're trying to pinpoint it. Now for other outdoor stuff,
the George Mead State Wildlife Area is not too far away,

(17:23):
and then there's a bunch of other cool trails and everything.
So when people people don't always think outdoor recreation when
they think of Marshfield or Wood County, but there's a
lot of options. Agreed.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
Yeah, it's I think we're getting more and more bikers here.
Biking seems to be exploding, and I know even e bikes,
and so yeah, it's a good time to get out.
We just recently hosted the Bluff to Bluff Race. Theer
I think about seventy racers. We had some people from
like Spain and like France, I think even and so
it was a about a fifty fifty mile bike ride

(17:56):
from Powers Bluff through some of the beautiful countries and
farmlands and then back to the BLUs And so that
was a fun event.

Speaker 1 (18:04):
Sweet. Yeah, you got some wide open spaces for that,
and even in town, you've got a cool little nature
park that Joe and Bernadine Weber Nature Park. It's a
fun little thing to visit, right, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
Yeah, a great, great little place to take an afternoon
walk and you know, you'll definitely see a little wildlife back.

Speaker 1 (18:20):
There some good golf courses by the way in the
area too, because there's a lot of doctors in Marshfield.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
So there are yeah, you gotta have golf with the doctors.

Speaker 1 (18:29):
So yeah, you got all kinds of There is the
Marshfield Country Cloud, there's the River's Edge and stuff like that.
So there's a lot of great options. And one thing
we don't talk a lot about is some of the
top places to stay in and around Marshfield. Several hotels,
there's probably some airbnbs. I haven't looked into the airbnb part,
but we're some of the preferred places to stay if

(18:50):
you're coming to Marshfield spending the weekend or on one
night or just longer time.

Speaker 2 (18:55):
Oh yeah, for sure. The Hotel Marshfield is a premier
bus western that's kind of it's a boutique style hotel
and so they're definitely a very popular spot to stop
attract right near or wild Wild Wood Park is nice
and yeah, yeah, definitely, I think you say there before.
And then we have a Hampton end it's just a
couple of years old. That is is really nice, really

(19:16):
shiny new There's also the Woodfield in is just kind
of right on the north side of downtown. That is
a is a nice property. They have a great restaurant
attached to them called the lumber Yard, with a nice
rotating beer tap selection. So I definitely would recommend checking
that out. And yeah, we've got ten ten hotels in Marshfield,
so a lot to choose from.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
That's great. Yeah, for a city of about twenty thousand,
that's a pretty nice selection, and I don't think it'd
be too long. Maybe Comblestone might start sniffing around because
they love locating wooden shock.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
Yeah, they've been expanding quite a bit, I think.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
Yeah, I haven't well Wisconsin based hotel. You know, you
gotta got to give them a shout out.

Speaker 2 (19:55):
That's good, that's good.

Speaker 1 (19:56):
Yeah. So yeah, and we talked a little bit about
the dairy options around because you have the Nasonville, you
have the lind Derry and that's further over I think
over into the Clark County line a bit, but that's
still not far away. And then the Sea Hayer Creamery.
That's a fun place to bring the family for a
couple of reasons.

Speaker 2 (20:11):
Yeah, definitely not too long from now, they're going to
have corn maize and some wagon rides and definitely get
some good ice cream lay there.

Speaker 1 (20:20):
Yeah, we're definitely getting to that time of year. One
of my other favorite signs right off ninety seven, which
connects downtown Marshfield with points northeast including Sea Hafers, there's
a side road called fur Food Road.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
Wow. I don't know if I've seen that.

Speaker 1 (20:35):
One, don't know the story behind it or how it
got that name, but I'm telling you this I was
next time. I'm following it all the way to the
end and see what happens.

Speaker 2 (20:45):
I hope that's not reference to some road kill.

Speaker 1 (20:48):
It's see, it's possible. I want the story about this.
So yeah, lots to do and see. Any anything else
of note that we should talk about. I've talked about
the Upper Mansion in the past, and that's on State
Trup tour. It's right by Wendsoor Family Plaza. And I
know you have ice skating there now in the winter, correct.

Speaker 2 (21:08):
So there's yeah, you know. I think one thing we
haven't touched on. We we do have a new water
parking town called Vanda Waters. Again, it's about two or
three years old, and so definitely, I know, we still
got a few weeks of hot weather less, so if
you need to cool off and have some fun with
the kids, that's a great place to go.

Speaker 1 (21:24):
That is exactly what was in my head. I'm like,
there's one other new thing in there, and it's not
popping to the front of my cranium. Waters. Yeah, it
looks like a pretty cool, comprehensive outdoor park.

Speaker 2 (21:36):
Yeah, definitely, a couple of couple of water slides. There's
a kind of a current pool that you know, kind
of kind of like a smaller I think floating in
the river or what do we call the laser rivers yea,
