(00:00):
You're number one for new country Catone O three points seven. It is
Steve and Gina in the Morning,Steve, Lundy and ten and we are
pleased to bring to the show aperson you've heard a lot from lately,
her big hit Your Place. Wouldyou please welcome Ashley Cook? Hi,
Ashley, Hello, how are youguys? We're doing fantastic and it's really
neat to catch up with you.Our first chance to talk with you.
(00:20):
I know you two. Also,I just have to say congrats on twenty
years. I'm so excited for youguys. Oh well, bless your heart.
Thank you so much. We appreciatethat Your Place is huge. Tell
us about that song. It's whatI want to know, is okay.
In one of Taylor Swift's first songs, she mentioned a guy named Drew.
I'm not going to ask you tomention any names, but is there anybody
(00:41):
walking the face of the earth thatmight be thinking that song is about me?
You know? There is? Andthe thing that I think is that
he doesn't necessarily deserve to have hisname mentioned on the radio. Oh love
it. It's one of the worstthings, you know, when you cheat
on somebody, you kind of justlose those privileges. I love it good.
Yeah, I think for me,I wrote this song. I was
(01:03):
peeted on and it really stucked andit hurt really bad, and it was
one of those things that I thinkin the past I would have tried to
work out or tried to, youknow, stand up for him or see
the reasoning behind it, because that'sjust kind of the person that I was.
But I reached this point in mylife when this breakup happened over this
whole situation. I was like, man, I don't deserve this, and
people that are in the situation thatare treated on also don't deserve this.
(01:25):
And I feel like instead of comingfrom it from an understanding place and trying
to get back together and work thingsout like I might have done in my
younger twenties, I was like, man, I think I just want to
write an anthem or write a songthat feels like, you know, I'm
putting my foot down and this ismy boundary line and I deserve more than
this. And that's where this songkind of came from. And I hope
that people that are also in thatsituation can feel understood by this song and
(01:47):
like they don't have to put upwith it. I love it. It's
not your place to hear your nameon the radio. TAGA with Ashley Cook
here on Cat one O three pointseven. This is our first chance to
do a n Ashley Cook deep divehere. So tell us how you caught
the attention of your record label,Big Loud. They are just amazing,
(02:07):
they really are. And so I'vebeen in music since I was eleven years
old. I've been writing songs andplaying shows and doing the whole thing for
a long time. But I wentto college in Nashville at Belmont University,
and I studied marketing and communication,so nothing to do with music. But
it was always a massive dream ofmine to get to pursue music full time.
(02:28):
And so my senior year of college, I was trying to decide if
I was going to go into likethe marketing world and kind of do that,
you know, corporate path, ifyou will, or if I wanted
to really give music a full timekind of adult career, try and see
what happens. And so I signedup for this showcase at my school,
and it's the showcase at Belmont thatTyler Hubbard won when he went to school
(02:51):
there in Brad Paisley, and it'slike a pretty it seemed established showcase that
a student ran and I applied forit and I got in and I had
a winning the showcase, and thejudges at the time, there's my now
agent or name's Kerrie Murphy at WMEand different people on the panel of judges,
they were like, hey, youknow, you should give this a
year and just see what happens andsee if you're able to really, you
(03:14):
know, make something out of thisbecause you have the raw talent for it,
which meant a lot to hear asyou know, a twenty one or
twenty two year old kid just outof college. And so I was like,
I'm gonna give it a shot. And that's right when COVID happened.
So I was like, well,I can't really like play shows or you
know, do anything like that, write in you know, songwriting rooms,
or go network at the bars intown or whatever it is. And so
(03:34):
I started posting videos on social mediaand that caught the attention of some of
the team players that are now onmy team and ended up landing Memphor's record
deal with Big Loud. So it'sreally crazy, how you know, life
ends up the way that you don'texpect it to, and then it ends
up being better than you expected it. So w Amy William Morris, the
people that rejected me genius, soyou're playing along. They messed up,
(03:58):
they messed up. It is StevinGina here on Cat one O three point
seven when we please to have Ashleycook with us this morning. Well,
Ashley, this couldn't be more perfecttiming because tomorrow we have your iHeart Country
World premiere with Brantley Gilbert. Thesong is called over when We're sober.
First of all, we're big fansof Brantley and big fans of you.
Tell us about this new song.Oh my gosh. Well, first off,
I'm a massive fan of Brandley too, and I have been for a
(04:20):
long time. It's funny because actuallyin college, my first college boyfriend,
his gift to me for Christmas wasto take a road trip to go see
Brantley play in Atlanta. So hewrote trip from Belmont to Atlanta. I
think it was like my freshman orsophomore year and went to go see Britley
because I was so obsessed with him. So I've told him the story a
million times and he's like, ohmy gosh, so yeah, I mean,
(04:41):
this song is really special and it'sreally cool that I get to be
on it. Kind of the storybehind how it came together was I was
just shopping on a random morning inNashville at Urban Outfitters in the Gulch and
I was in the dressing room tryingon different clothes and I see my phone
start to ring from an unknown number. But you know, iOS will say
sometimes like could be this person, and it said could be Brantley with like
(05:02):
a g I, and I waslike, hang on a damn minute.
There's so ware that Brittley Gilbert wascalling me right now. Because I had
met Brantley like once before, toldhim I was a huge fan, but
I really didn't know him or havea member talk to him on like a
regular basis by any means. Andso I was like, man, I
was like, it's gotta be spam. There's no way. So I didn't
answer the phone call, and Iwas like, I've got to be spam,
(05:24):
and so I just kind of likelet it ring, and I was
like this, there's no way.And so I got a text a couple
of minutes after that, and itwas Brantley, and he said, Hey,
you know, it's Brandley Gilbert.I have an idea that I'd love
to run by you. And Iwas like okay, like sure, So
I gave him a call back whenup talking on the phone for like twenty
thirty minutes, and he said thathe spent the good part of the night
(05:45):
before listening to my entire album andtelling me his favorite songs on my album
and just really leaning into how muchhe cared and how much he studied my
voice and what I do as acareer. And he said, I have
this song that I wrote with JellyRoll and we both are looking for the
perfect collab on this song, andeverybody in our corner I love Jelly.
Jelly and I are great friends, and he's like everybody in my corner says
(06:09):
that you're the girl for it.So if you if you'd love to do
it, here's the song. Andhe sent me the song. I listened
to it one time and I waslike, this, this is such a
hit and it's also such an honorto get to be on a song,
let alone that song because of howgreat it is. So I'm very excited,
very full circle moment, and withtwo of some of my favorite guys
in town, Brandley Gilbert and JellyRoll. You're living your dream. I
(06:29):
can just imagine that phone call too, if you would have answered it in
the dressing room. Hey, Ashley, this is Brandley. Oh come on,
who is it really like? Thisis definitely AI. No. Well,
we're excited to hear the iHeart Countryworld premiere of Brandley Gilbert's song over
when We're Sober featuring you, AshleyCook. And if you don't mind right
(06:50):
now, we're going to play yourbig hit Your Place. Is that okay?
I would love that so much.Thank you so much for all the
support on this song. Well,it was great to talk to you for
the first time, and hopeful thisis the first and many times we'll have
a chance to catch up. Ihope so too. I hope to see
y'all very soon. Thank you,Ashley, have a great day. Thanks
guys, you too. BYD Bye,
