Speaker 1 (00:03):
Sumner has a football right now on second and ten
as they hand off up the middle, and this one
is taken by Steele Isaacs and he's knocked right back
down to the thirty five yard line. They're gonna move
the chains. Here is first down for Sumner on the
first possession. Camus won the toss. They the third Sumner
receives here to begin the first half.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Yeah, and they start off with a great kick return.
He gets them out past the forty yard line and
a couple of really great plays right out of the gate.
They're in business here at about the thirty six yard line.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Slip backs here as Nate Donovan bigger parton single back,
he's out of the shotgun, takes a snap and fires
right across the middle, and that's in incomplete as that
one was intended for his favorite target, braytln Pope and
it's second down coming up.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Yeah, they just try to throw a little slant route there.
Great coverage on that by the Camus cornerback. So just
underway between these two teams, which.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Couldn't be any more polar opposites when you look at
how they're built.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yeah, and the coaches in the makeups and the personalities
of the coaches are really quite well.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
We'll get to them Herreor in just a bit. It's
now third down and three here for Sumner, single back
formation out of the shotgun. Donovan drops back to his right,
fire to the right side, and that's broken up incomplete
as that was knocked away by Camus's Kay Lucans and
his fourth and three coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Yeah, uh right there, Sumner tries to run a little
play action with the drag across the field and the
and the Camas defender number twenty two, uh Lukens was
right there to disrupt that, knock that ball away.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
Six foot one, seventy junior. He had thirty one tackles,
no interceptions yet, but a great play to break that up.
So decision time for Sumner, and it looks like that
they're gonna go for it. Right here on fourth and
three of the ball plays and about roughly the thirty
six yard line. Donovan out of the shotgun formation, single
(01:49):
back one running back here it was right, took the
snap in hand, it off here as up the middle.
This is the steel Isaacs and I don't think he
got all of it, maybe a gain of one and
Camas got the stop. It's a and over on downs
and they'll go right to work offensively here for the
first time this evening.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yeah, big big stop there by the Camus defense to
stop that summer drive that started off so promising. Uh,
if your Camas, you're that staff, you're those players, you're
pretty excited that you got him to get a good, big,
big stop there.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Camus is led by first year head coach Adam Mathieson
took the shot after fifteen seasons at Mountain View. So
Camus has the ball. Their quarterback Jake Davidson, leading passer
here in the state. On first and ten, handing off
now to the left side. This one's taken along the
numbers and being taken out of the thirty eight yard line.
Looked like Titan Brody was in there and he got
hauled down for maybe a gain of four and it
(02:39):
should be second down and six coming up here.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Yeah, Titan Brody carries most of the mail for these papermakers.
He had nine hundred and eleven yards this year, almost
two thousand.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Mark.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
You could eclipse at tonight. Titan Brody a five senior.
This is a brother combination in their backfield. On second down,
Davidson out of the shotgun, rolls. It was right, fire
is right sidelined. That is cut, but it's out of
bounds as that one hauled him by Jack McDonald, and
that should be third and eight coming up here.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Yeah, a little bit off the mark, thrown a little
bit high into the outside receiver, couldn't get his feet down.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
You got to think the adrenaline is pumping here tonight
for these young guys.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Camus got here on a twenty eight to twenty win
over Gonzaga Prep in the semi final, but it was
how they got here that was so rivetting down by
thirteen twice and scored twenty one unanswered points. So it's third,
down to eight. We have all spotted at about the
thirty seven yard line. Davidson out of the shotgun, single
back here, it was right, that's Titan Brody. Davidson takes
(03:41):
a snap, three step drop fires left side. That is
cup by McDonald, but he was out of bounds. Again,
that's incomplete, and it looks like that will be a
quick out here for Camas's offense. Fourth and eight coming.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
Up, Yeah, and I'm not sure that would have been
a completion anyway, the receiver went out of bounds, came
back in. He can't be the first one to touch it,
so I don't think even if he would have been
in bounds, that would have been a completion.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
So Sumner's got to feel pretty good about that for
a sequence there, Joel, Oh, absolutely, you first drive of
your opponent, you get him to go three and out.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
That's that's definitely a positive.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
So back to receive here for Sumner on the punt
will be Brennan Abbott as this one booted toward the
Labt sideline that goes out of bounds, so it looks
like it will be Sunner taking over back deep in
their own territory. Quick sequences here for these two offenses.
(04:32):
As we're just underway for the four A state title game.
Mike Betton with you alongside Joel, Vincent Camus and Sunnder.
Nothing nothing nine to twenty two to go here in
the first quarter. Yeah, both teams got their initial drive.
Not much came of it for either team, and we'll
see what Sumner does here on their second possession. So
this will be quarterback Nate Donovan going right back to work.
He's out of the shotgun right now. One single back year.
(04:54):
That was right, and he'll hand off for Isaac's barreling
his white lab side about roughly a two yard game
where he's taken down and it looked like that was
Luke Webb in on the tackle for a gain of
roughly two which second and eight.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Yeah, it appears to me that Camus is loading the box.
They're gonna try to force Sumner to throw the football here.
They've got about eight guys in the box here. That's
pretty heavily stacked against the run. It's gonna force Someuner
to have to throw. Looks like Camus is in Samanda
man covera chure.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
We'll get to Keith Rosser head coaching a little bit
for a long time coming for him. On second down,
the handoff for Isaacs crushing his way up the middle
and he gets about roughly a five yard gain at
about roughly the forty two yard line. That should be
about third down and two or three coming up.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yeah, And this is that smash mouth football that coach
ross talks about. This is just run it right between
the tackles, run it right at you. We dare you
to try to stop it.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
It'll be third and four here for some to run
about their own forty two yard line as Donovan, out
of the shotgun formation, takes a snap, fires that left
side that's comped by Pope's wide receiver along the numbers,
and he's out of bounds roughly a gain of ten
yards and Sun removes that changes first down.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Yeah, very well done there, a little speed out, speed
cut route. He gets the first down and Sumner's moving
the change.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
Braylen Pope that receiver we're talking about. He's already had
offers here from USC Miami and Oregon, yet he is
only a sophomore. Only a sophomore. Wow, first in tent
here for Sumner at the Camas forty seven yard line.
Donovan dropping back flings it left side. That's just over
the head of Pope and he would have been scott
(06:24):
free if he got that one. It's over a set
incomplete and then second and ten.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Yeah, camus run a little cover two there. They try
to run a little hole shot there between the corner
and the safety, trying to get over the top of that.
But you're right, he catches that. That's six points.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
Hey, Donovan six foot two one, ninety junior there a
quarterback was a mount side transfer so it's second and
ten coming up here for Sumner. Had about the forty
seven yard line. Donovan out of the shotgun one running
back to his right. That's Isaacs, and they call the audible.
Here is Isaac shifting over and out to the left side.
He'll hand off for Isaacs barreling his way up the
(06:59):
middle to the thirty eight yard line, where he's taken
down by Camus's Nico Spear and again of roughly six
it looks like and it will be third down and
four coming up.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Yeah, there's nothing complicated about what Sumner's doing right there,
right power off tackle and daring these canvas papermakers to
kind of try to control this line of scrimmage ball
see bike. Sumner's getting the best of them right now.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Ball spot of thirty nine yard lineups now third down
and three coming up here for Sumner. Donovan out of
the shotgun formation. Isaac's here to was right, took the
snap and Donovan flings it laps side, that's caught by
Pope and he's wrapped up at about the thirty one
yard line by McDonald and he's out of bounds, which
should be enough here for the first down and they'll
move the jeans. Indeed, here with seven thirty eight to
(07:42):
go in a scoreless game.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Yeah, and Sumner's found something here right with Pope out there,
he's getting one on one coverage. They're getting exactly what
they want.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Braylen pope longest catch this year was fifty nine yards
first and ten for Sumner, and they hand off now
for Isaacs bruising his way up the middle, and he's
taken down to about the twenty five yard line, which
will be a game about roughly six yards, so it
should be second and four coming up here.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Yeah, and that's about the sixth time they've run that
same play. What's the old adage, right, if it ain't broke,
don't fix it. Right, If you're averaging five six yards
of pop, you're just gonna keep running that.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Keith Rosser a head coach all about smash mouth football.
So Steel should be getting his touch this year in
a lot this evening. Second and five coming up here
for Sumner at about the twenty five yard line. Donovan
took the snapadding off for Steel, breaks a tackle along
out of the fifteen yard line, sheds one more ten
five into the end zone, touchdown for Sumner Steele Isaacs
(08:37):
running it all the way in for a twenty five
yard rush and the Spartans on the board up six nothing.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Yeah, he broke one tackle there. The problem for Cavas
is that tackle. Nobody put a hand on him if
you're a canvas player, until he was about eight yards
down the field. He breaks that tackle, runs into the pylon, touchdown, Spartans.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
Sixteenth rushing touchdown this season for steel As. That will
bring on special teams here for the extra point, and
the snap is down, the kick is on the way
and this one is good planned by Wyatt ply or Piler,
and that puts Sumner on top seven nothing. They're often
(09:18):
racing here from Husky Stadium. We'll come back in a
bit with more. As we're in the first quarter again,
Sumner on top of Camus by a score of seven nothing.
Glad you can join us. You're listening to the twenty
twenty four WYAA GEESEA State Football Championships presented by the
Seattle Seahawks on Sports Radio nine to fifty KJRM. Celiasacs
(09:43):
drawing first blood here for Sumner on a twenty five
yard touchdown run to put the Spartans of seven to
nothing over the paper Makers and the four A State
championship game. Mike Benton with you alongside Joel Vincent and
the Sumner kick and over end winds up into the
end zone out of bounds and that will be a
touchback as that one was well over the head of
(10:03):
canvas as Jared Forner. And now we'll see what kind
of answered Jay Davidson has here.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Yeah, it mean'd be important for Camus here at least
to string a couple of first downs together, be able
to keep that defense off the field a little bit.
They weren't unable to do that in their first possession,
but they're gonna have to really make sure that they
can try to sustain something right here.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
So it's first in ten here for cavas that their
own twenty yard line as Davidson out of the shotgun
formation single back here to was right, took the step
immediately fires this one of the twenty yard line cup
by McDonald. She has one tackle thirty thirty five and
he's pushed out of bounds at about the thirty five
yard line by Sumners Austin LeVar. So that enough to
move the chains here for a first down for Camas,
(10:42):
and that's what the doctor ordered. That's what Cammus needed
to do. Get that first first down in the game.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Sometimes that could be the hardest one, right, So now
they have it, now they hopefully can find some rhythm.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
He led the state in passing three thousand, four hundred
and forty yards a game. First and ten for Camas
thirty five yard line and the and off up the middle.
This one is a Titan Brody and he's hauled down
at about the thirty or thirty four yard line. It
should be about no gain and second down coming up.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
And let's not forget to mention he threw for fifty touchdowns. Yeah,
I mean that is just phenomenal.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Through seven touchdowns. His career high repeats seven touchdowns September
twenty seventh against Oregon City. So i've all spot is
second and eight at the thirty eight yard line for Camus,
back in their own zone. Davidson out of the shotgun,
we'll take it himself and now to the right side,
and he's hauled down at about the thirty nine yard line,
so roughly a gain of one, but third down coming
up here for the papermakers.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Yeah, and that was designed quarterback run the whole way.
But now they're facing third and six. This is right
where Sumner wants them. Both teams tonight are going to
want to be in that second or third and three,
third and two category. So Sumner's got Camus right where
they want him right here.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
So we'll see what Jake Davidson has cooking up right
here as Sunra's offense, and they love the air attack
going up against that small mouth brand of football that
Keith Ross asked for his own defense. Of course, Keith
Ross was a linebacker coming out of his playing days,
So big play here for Camus. Already on third and
six at their own thirty nine yard line. Out of
(12:13):
the shotgun, Davidson dropping back fires it high in the air,
left side, and that's over the head and incomplete intended
for Anthony Forner. And it's fourth and sixth coming up
here for the papermakers.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
Yeah, a few of the papermakers. You've got to punt
the ball here, and it looks like they're going to
do that. They're running their punt team on.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
So two possessions and nothing on the board for Jay Davidson,
and that's gotta feel a little bit foreign right now.
For what they're usually used to. Yeah, and just.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
Running their punt team on the field usually is probably
pretty foreign for them with the season they put together.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
Now the big William taves back to Booth this one
away was a goalkeeper in soccer as well, and this
one a flailing spiral to about the thirty yard line.
Sumners is gonna let it die as that one now
touched by Camas saying Anthony Forner. So Sumner will take
over in their own territory at a little above the thirty.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
Now, right now, Sumner is bringing the battle of physicality.
It's gonna be interesting here to see if Camus can
kind of step up and match the level of physicality
that Sumner has brought to this football game. They have
not been able to do it thus far.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
We mentioned Keith Ross his career as a linebacker, high energy, edgy,
as they say, an emotional defense of Guru, and he
told us he loves the words smash mount to describe
his program. First and ten here for Sumner at their
own thirty yard line, and Donovan out of the shotgun
formation took the snap screen passed out of the left
side that's caught at about the thirty but also a
(13:38):
flag on the play as brailin polpad that catch and
we'll see what's cooking right here with no gain.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
Yeah, generally you see a flag out in that area
on one of those perimeter screens, it's usually one of
those receivers is caught holding or blocking in the back.
We'll see what the referee says.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
So it looks like it will be a holding penalty,
but that might go again Sumner and will push to
them back if it is confirmed. So it will indeed
push the Spartans back with five seventeen to go here
in period or in the first quarter.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Yeah, facing first and twenty, now, it'll be interesting to
see how you know, Sumner wants to run the ball
right at him first and twenty kind of changes the
equation a little bit, but we'll see what answer Sumner here.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
Has Donovan out of the shotgun formation with Isaacs right
behind him as his first and twenty. He took the
snap and handing off. Now for Isaacs rolling out now,
why to the left side, No chance. He is hauled
down at about the twelve yard line for a loss
of yards on that play.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
That was Luke Webb.
Speaker 1 (14:41):
Yeah, Luke Webb took him right down on the Jans
move back even further.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Yeah, I read that the whole way chased it down,
was able to make a sure tackle on his own out.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
There, so a loss of five. It will be second
and twenty five here for the Spartans, with the ball
spot right now at their own twelve yard line, so
they're in a little bit of a sticky situation here
for the first time this evening, Donovan out of the
shotgun formation heading off now for Isaacs. They love that play.
He finds daylight now right side and taken down at
(15:12):
about the twenty five yard line. As in on that
tackle it looked like for the paper makers was kay
Luken's and they'll spot this ball at about the twenty
six yard line.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
Yeah, and Sunner gets a chunk of that back. But
they're still facing third and fourteen here. If your camas,
you gotta think they're gonna throw, So the question becomes
do you bring pressure or do you sit back and cover.
We'll see what they do here.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
So third and fourteen here for Sumner at their own
twenty six yard line. Donovan out of the shotgun formation,
goes right out of the air over the top, and
this one is caught complete at the thirty yard line
and being hauled down for Sumner. What a past that
one complete. It's a first down coming up here as
(15:55):
the Cats was hauled in by the Spartans. Kino a ground.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Yeah, chemists just does bring the pressure they bring him.
But you know what you say, you bring pressure, you
better get there. And that was well pass protected up front,
well thrown ball, great catch when the pressure doesn't get there,
that's hard on those dbs.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
So deepest ball that Donovan has thrown this evening is
now first and ten for the Spartans at the Camna's
thirty three yard line. Donovan, out of the shotgun formation,
took the snap three step drop waiting and fires right
to the right side intended for Pope. It's incomplete and
off his hands and broken up. Give credit right there
to Jack McDonald. It's second and ten coming up.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
Yeah, Jack McDonald is a great job covering Pope on
the on the about the intermediate cross across the field.
Times it gets there right when the ball gets there,
is able to force the incompletion.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
So it'll be second and ten here for Sunner coming up.
But the came and is thirty three yard line again,
it's seven to nothing in favor of Sudner, and they
have a chance to really inflict some damage as far
as the narrative on this game, and they can punch
one more in here hand out to Isaac's right up
the gut, but nothing there. He's taken down for no
gain as in on that tackle it looked like was
(17:06):
Luke Webb and company. And it will now be third
and ten coming up.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
Yeah, crucial third and ten and we'll be interesting here
to see if Camus can kind of bow up and
get a stop here.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
So seven nothings Deeale Isaacs had the first blow on
a twenty five yard touchdown run third and ten and
placed right back at the Camas thirty two yard line.
Donovan out of the shotgun formation to as right as
Isaacs waiting here with twoin fifty one to go, the
snap to Donovan handing off for Isaacs up the middle
(17:40):
in Camus has him and Gold at about the thirty
yard line as he was taken down by Nico's Spear
and crew. That's a game about only one or two
yards and fourth down coming up here for the Spartans.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
Yeah, Sumner's facing fourth and eight.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
Here.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
They just ran a bunch of different guys on here.
Looks like they're going to actually attempt a field goal.
I'm gonna do a little math mike. It looks like
it's going to be about a forty seven yard field goal.
Speaker 1 (18:04):
Yeah, you're on top of that. Austin Farns, he can
boot it as long as fifty four. This year, snap
is down. Farrens's kick is on the way end over ender,
and it is no good. It hit the right up
right and out.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
Plenty of leg, plenty of leg that thing he had
about three quarters the way up that upright, but you're
exactly right. He hit the upright and came right back.
Speaker 1 (18:26):
He could have gone about roughly sixty Yeah, and hehow
would turnover on downs? It's still seven to nothings Sumner.
But Camus has new life with two eleven Togo in.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
The first quarter. And you would hope if you're Camas
and coach Matheson, that's gonna inject a little bit of
life in you. It kind of swinks the momentum of
your way, you hope.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
Uh, you know.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
The Cavas offense just hasn't got into a rhythm yet.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
They're in their first eight title game since twenty nineteen.
They won that year, had to stay title as well
back in twenty sixteen. So going to work here as
Davidson on first and ten here for Camas at the
twenty yard line. Davidson under center to his left. This
Titan Brody took the snap and now going to his left,
(19:07):
and he's hauled down now at about the twenty two
yard line for a game of two at second down coming.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
Up, yeah, design quarterback counter there just nowhere to run.
This defensive front for Sumner so far has been pretty solid.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
So Sumner and Keith Ross's defense, who have played some
fantastic ball this season in their quarterfinal win against Graham
capalsen forcing three turnovers. So at second and eight coming
up here for Camus at their own twenty two yard line,
with one forty to go here in the first quarter
and Sumner on top seven to nothing, david sent out
of the shotgun formation one man who was right, and
(19:41):
he'll drop back now on a three step drop. Waiting
takes it himself and too much time, he is hauled
down at the fifteen yard line by Will Maxwell for
a second a loss of three yards on the play.
It's third and eight coming up now.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
Sumner rushes for drops seven in the coverage. That's really
kind of a cover sack. Davidson had all kinds of
time back there before he decides to bail.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
There's just nobody open, so CAMAS has certainly had their
hands full of the Sumner defense. One to three to
go and ticking officially now third and thirteen. As Davidson
has this ball plays at the sixteen yard line out
of the shotgun formation, took a three step drop waiting
in surveys, has to bail out nat of his left
(20:24):
has the football running alongside the twenty yard line. He's
forced out of bounds at about the twenty five yard line,
a pick above. Roughly eight yards on the play, but
not enough. It's four down coming up here, and once.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
Again there's just nobody open and Sumners content to rush
for and drop seven in the coverage close those windows down,
making really tight and there's just nowhere for Davison to
get the ball.
Speaker 1 (20:45):
So Camus has to think that they haven't seen a
challenge like this in quite a while.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
I would wonder when the last time Camus trailed in
a game, right, So this is probably uncharted, unfamiliar territory
for them.
Speaker 1 (20:56):
All, these two teams coming in with massive wind streaks
as Taves back to punt this one away seven to
nothing in favor of Camas, and this ball booted right
down the middle and well out of the reach of
why Att Pyler and Camus will down it at about
the thirty two yard line back in Sumner territory. So
(21:18):
if thirty three seconds left hand, Sunner will go back
to work on top seven to nothing in the first quarter.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
Yeah, I would venture to say, and I'm just guessing,
but I would be hard pressed to see or know
if Camus is punting three times in one game all year,
and here we're not even out of the first quarter
and they've punted three times due to this Sumner defense.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
Wasn't it Mike Tyson that one said everyone's got a
plan until you get punched right in the mouth.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
Well, Cavas is finding out just how physical Sumner is
right now.
Speaker 1 (21:44):
All right now, Sumner is punching hard in this first quarter.
It's first and ten for the Spartans, thirty two yard
line back in their own territory. Isaac's took the ball
up the middle and he's taken down at about the
thirty four yard line for roughly a gain of two,
and that should be second and eight coming up with
the clock ticking and twenty one seconds.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
Yeah, i'd fully anticipate with the number of canvas defenders
in the box here to stop this run, that we're
gonna see some kind of play action coming up.
Speaker 1 (22:08):
Steel Isaacs had the first blowing this game, a twenty
five yard touchdown run to put some are on top
seven to nothing at second and eight at their own
thirty five yard line. Donovan handing off for Isaacs, cutting
his white left side and he's taken down at about
the thirty eight yard line, so shipping a little more
yard or job for there, but only about roughly too
And that should be third down at about five or
(22:30):
six coming.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
Up, and we've reached the end of the quarter, which
we'll have.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
Some tor on top seven nothing on the twenty five
yard touchdown run to Steel Isaacs. So we are a
quarter of the way down here in the twenty twenty
four WYAA Geza State Football Championships. Again, some 'ren top
seven nothing. We will come back in a bit. You're
listening to the twenty twenty four wyaa Geza State Football
(22:57):
Championships presented by the Seattle Seahawks on Sports Radio nine
fifty KJRM.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
Do the smart thing here, the hygh percentage thing here.
They're gonna punt the ball away.
Speaker 1 (23:09):
It'll be Santos Hernandez Marieves to boot this one away.
And again, as we said it, Camus has got new
life once again. But they have found life on the
offensive side hard to come by this evening. So on
fourth and four, back at the thirty eight yard line
for Sumner, Hernandez Reeves takes a snap and boots this
(23:30):
one away a line drive right down the left side,
and that will take a hop and a skip out
of bounds and about roughly the thirty yard line back
in Camas territory. So they take over once again now
on the second quarter, and they're still trying to find
a way to get the key into the addition right now.
Speaker 2 (23:45):
Yeah, and sometimes getting that punch in that first one
is the most difficult one. But again, Camus is a
rhythm based offense. They've got to find some rhythm and
maybe they can do that with a couple of completions
in first downs.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
Nothing in favor of Sumner over Cavas in the four
race state title game. Mike Benton with you alongside Joel
Vincent Davidson. On first and ten at camas is thirty
yard line out of the shotgun formation, calls the audible
single back one man. It was leud Davidson got the
snap and now rolling over left side, he's taken down
in about the thirty five yard line as in on
(24:22):
that tackle it looked like was Braylin Pope and it's
second about five coming up here.
Speaker 2 (24:26):
Yeah, but compared to earlier possessions, that's actually a pretty
good first down play for Camus. Positive play. Now they're
looking at second and five.
Speaker 1 (24:34):
Would you believe it? Right now? Through one quarter a
yard and a half for Jay Davidson's average On second down,
Davidson fires that left set along the numbers and that's
caught by Chase McGee or he's forced out of bounds.
Awfully close there to the first down, and we'll wait
for confirmation, but it should be third down coming up here.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
It looks like that line judge is gonna market just
shy of a yard short there of the first down,
So Camas is gonna face a shortened about one yard here.
Speaker 1 (25:01):
Eleven sixteen left here in the second quarter with Suner
on top seven nothings to the Elaac's twenty five yard
touchdown run got the Spartans on the board. So its
third and one here for Camas. Davidson out of the
shotgun formation as Titan Brody oft to his left, took
the snap and fires at left side. That one's complete
(25:21):
back of the forty yard line. McGee is now forced
out of bounds, but a gain of three which should
be good enough here for a first down, and it is.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
It is, And Camus has really kind of exclusively gone
to this perimeter screen game. I don't know if that's
because they've found something there or they've just kind of
come to the conclusion that they're not having a lot
of success running it between the tackles.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
So it will be second down and ten or first
down and ten. Bigger pardon coming up here for Camus
at their own forty two yard line, So slowly but
shortly inching their way up field as Davidson out of
the shotgun formation, and they'll take this one himself up
the middle and now taken down at about the forty
six yard line for a gain of roughly three, and
that should be second down and seven coming up.
Speaker 3 (26:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
The papermakers run a little zone read that we see
so much in the college game and at the high
school game. He's reading that defensive end and he decides
to keep the ball there.
Speaker 1 (26:13):
So second down and seven coming up for Camas at
their own forty six yard line. Thor Brody lone man
of the backfield. Davidson took the step. It's a keeper
now on the right side, and he's taken down for
no gain at the forty six yard line. Once again,
a third down coming.
Speaker 2 (26:30):
Up, Yeah, and that's a win for Sumner because now
Camus is in this situation of third and long pretty
much forces their hand. Sumner News are gonna have to
throw the ball here.
Speaker 1 (26:40):
Davidson has gone deep just once this evening, and no
dice on that. So Camas has been restricted to short passes,
to screen passes, and it really hasn't done much for
them overall in the scope of this game.
Speaker 2 (26:55):
No, Davidson had fifteen yards passing in the first quarter.
If you would have told me that before, I wouldn't
have believed you.
Speaker 1 (27:00):
Ten minuts left here in the second quarter, So it's
now third down and six for Camus at their own
forty seven yard line. Davidson dropping backfires at left side.
That's complete to McDonald and forced right back out of
bounds at the Sumner forty two yard line. A game
of roughly ten and Camus moves the chains.
Speaker 2 (27:17):
Yeah, Davidson does a nice job. They're feeling a high
snap actually and maintaining the timing that he needed to
get that ball out on a little cowboy corner route
combination out there. Good job by the receiver to know
where the sticks were. First down for Camus, if Jack
McDonald can break free, he's gone. Has a school record
for the one hundred meter by the way. First and
(27:37):
ten for Camus the Sumner forty one yard line. Davidson
back out of the shotgun screen pass now left side.
That's complete and being pushed out of bounds at about
the thirty three yard line, Anthony Forner. That's a game
of about roughly seven yards here. Second down coming up, Yeah,
more of that perimeter screen game. Sumner may have to
walk their cornerbacks up and get closer to the line
(27:57):
of screamers there, because I think Camus will keep doing
that as long as the Sumner corners are gonna line
that far off.
Speaker 1 (28:03):
We mentioned the brother combination here for Camus's backfield, Thor
Brody checking back in once again, younger brother of Titan
Brody and he's a sophomore. So it's now second and four,
coming up of the Sumner thirty four yard line. Davidson
got the snap, heading off for Thor Brody and bursting
his way up the middle. Is taken down of about
the thirty two yard line. I don't think God enough
on the play, roughly two yards. It's third down coming
(28:24):
up here.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
Yeah, geez, it's gonna be very close. It's gonna be
very close. And it looks like they're waving.
Speaker 1 (28:30):
The state will move him.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
Yeah, okay, first down Camas. They're in business down here
at the thirty one yard.
Speaker 1 (28:35):
Lineh snudge that one right back over the line. So
it's first and ten now for Cavas at the Sumner
thirty one. So again they're inching their way downfield. Davidson
back out of the shotgun formation, Titan Brody back in
the game, single back to his left. Davidson got the
snap looking over to his left side and we'll take
it himself, cutting right side now to the twenty five
(28:57):
yard line and he got hammered and down he goes.
Also in on the tackle was often LeVar and a
gain of roughly six yards.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
Yeah, I thought we might see a flag there. Davidson
was giving himself up and going down into the slide
when he was hit, but the officials didn't see it
that way.
Speaker 1 (29:13):
A lot of keepers here for Jake Davidson so far
as Camas has had to find alternative measures here for
this offense. So it's second and four coming up for
Camas at the twenty five yard line, Sumner territory.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
Yeah, you run that quarterback, you get an extra blocker.
Speaker 1 (29:26):
Inside nine minutes left, second quarter, sumner on top seven
to nothing. Davidson out of the shotgun formation, takes himself
and smacking his way up the middle, is taken down
at about the twenty two yard line and a gain
of about three that's softly close, but it should be
third down coming up.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
Yeah, third and one, boy, what a great down of
distance down in this end of the field, almost in
the red zone. If you are Camus coach Mattheson, you
know this is two down territory. I would not be
surprised here to see them try to throw this ball.
Speaker 1 (29:55):
So third down and one coming up here for Camas
as Davidson going back out of the shotgun formation once
again at the Sumner twenty two yard line, Camas down
by seven. Davidson got the snap, fires at left side
cup by Anthony Forner and he's forced at a bounds
good enuffle for a first down at the Sumner seventeen
yard line. And in on that play it looked like
(30:16):
for a Sumner was Mason Thayer.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
Well, you know, Sumner found stuff that was really working,
just running right at Camas between tackles. Now Camas counterpunching
by throwing screens out onto the perimeter to their receivers.
So a little bit of a chess patch going on here.
Speaker 1 (30:30):
So the chains move once again. First and ten for
Camas at the Sumner eighteen yard line. Davidson took the snap,
flings it left side. That's incomplete, but Anthony Forner got
smacked right in the backfield it looked like by Sumner's
Taylor reebar. And it's second down coming up here. But also, yep,
(30:51):
we got a flag down yep, So they're gonna get
Camas here for a false start, and this is gonna
get pushed back to what it looks like first and
(31:13):
fifteen right back at the Sumner twenty two. So Camus
trying to overcome the hiccup as they're down seven up
things Sumners defense though, this evening up the stuff in
the biggest game of the year. Davidson three step drop
flings it left side. That's complete at the twenty five
(31:34):
yard line, breaking a tackle and now haul down right
back at the ten yard line Nico Spear and that
should be good enough for a first down.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
What a great play, well executed. What we just saw
there was a tight end middle screen. I was wondering
when they were gonna get Nico Spear involved.
Speaker 1 (31:50):
That guy is a flat out player six foot two,
two thirty senior. Not enough. I beg your pardon, and
we'll be second down in about roughly two coming up
here for a Camas taking the snap now right side Brody.
He's hauled down right at about the eight yard line.
That's softly close. Titan Brody had the handoff on that play,
and we'll wait and see if the chains do get
(32:11):
moved here. And it looks like third down coming up
here for Camus. He stands up the gun to fill
out here for Camas more toward the fifty yard line,
and it's quite a haul for them nearby the Washington
and Oregon border.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
Here, But Mike, they're gonna say it's first down.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
Hey, they will move the chains. Indeed, good call there,
Joel First and ten coming up here for Camus or
first and gold, bigger partner at the nine yard line.
Davidson under center, took the snap and takes it himself,
but he's mauled right back in the nine yard line,
So no gain on the play. And it looked like
it was Dylan tt Illelley who got in there for
(32:57):
the most part of the tackle.
Speaker 2 (32:58):
Yeah, I think Camus is going to have to throw
the ball down here in the red zone. This front
from Sumner is just really really tough for this canvas
papermaker run game to even get anything going between the tackles.
Speaker 1 (33:09):
How difficult is it when you consider how much of
the condensed field that they're going to be playing with here.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
Windows become much smaller and much tighter. When you get
down here, you start to run out of room.
Speaker 1 (33:17):
So second and goal to nine here for Camas coming
up as Davidson out of the shotgun formation play action
pass flings that left side Spear did he hauling in? Yes,
he did with one hand web pylon. He's in for
the touchdown.
Speaker 2 (33:30):
Yeah. There he is exhibiting what kind of athlete he is.
I was wondering that first quarter where he was and
why he wasn't involved, But coach matthieson the staff dialed
up the right play there, and we're looking at a
tie ballgame here if Camus can convert on this extra point.
Speaker 1 (33:44):
So if you're a Cavas, you're probably saying finally, as
it took them end of the second quarter to get
on the board and we're getting deep.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
Now look at this. We've got some type of swinging
gait action here and now they'll shift into a regular
point after touchdown.
Speaker 1 (33:58):
All right, So Camus will a little bit of smoke merrors,
but they're going to go for the extra point here
with Jackson Tyler back to boot this one away. So
Camus getting on the board on Nico Spear's touchdown grab
and the point after kick is on the way and
then split the upright, so we're all tied at seven
apiece with six thirteen to go here in the second quarter,
(34:21):
Sumner and Camas all knotted up. We're back in a bit.
You're listening to the twenty twenty four WIAA Geeza State
Football Championships present up by the Seattle Seahawks on Sports
Radio nine fifty KJRM. Nico's Spear helping put Camus on
the board in a highlight real nine yard touchdown grab
(34:43):
and we're all tied at seven a piece, second quarter
in the four A State Championship game. Mike Bett and
Joel Vincent with you.
Speaker 2 (34:49):
Yeah, and you know that Nico Spear had seven touchdowns
coming into this game from the tight end spot. You
knew he was going to be involved. It was just
a matter of time and it was the right time
for Camus there down in the red zone.
Speaker 1 (35:00):
So we'll see what Sunner can do to answer here.
And so they'll go right back to work. Why at
Pilo and Pono board and back to receive, And this
is Piler's balls. This one booted toward the right side
but kind of muffed a little bit right toward about
the two yard line. And a flag on the play
also coming out of about the pylon. Yeah, they're gonna
(35:22):
say he didn't touch it. And because the ball was
kicked out of bound.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
Sumner will get a choice here of whether or not
they want Camus to rekick or take possession at thirty five.
I was a little worried that he touched it.
Speaker 1 (35:33):
I thought so too, Yeah, but the official was right there,
had a great look at it, and it looks like
Summer will take possession at thirty five. So they're gonna
move it up a little bit here for Sumner as
they have gone to the run game in heavy fashion,
no surprise as well.
Speaker 2 (35:47):
Yeah, and I bet we're gonna see more of that, right.
Speaker 1 (35:50):
Stele Isaac's twenty five yard touchdown run put the Spartans
on the board. So it's pretty tight right now as
we're getting closer here to halftime with Sumner and Camus
all at seven apiece. One team smash Mouth, the other
team air Raid and smash Mouth. So far, given team
air Raid, all they can handle the smash Mouth team.
(36:10):
Right now, Sumner has the ball first and ten at
their own thirty five yard line. Donovan fires left side.
That's complete with the forty yard line and getting taken
out of bounds. Right there was Carter Coka, first time
he's had a catch here this evening, and they'll move
the chains a little bit. But it's second down in
five coming up.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
Yeah, it's Sumner says, you can throw it out on
the perimeter. We can throw it out on the perimeter.
Speaker 1 (36:33):
Carter Coke six foot four, two and thirty pounds senior
as a tight end.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
There are some dudes out here. I'm telling you physically,
there are some dudes.
Speaker 1 (36:41):
He is a Montana State commit. By the way, second
and five for Sumner in the handoff to Isaac's cutting
left side Jukes's way up along the forty yard line
and taken down at about the forty two as and
on the tackle was Luke web for a gain of
roughly two yards. It's third down coming up here for Sumner.
Speaker 2 (36:58):
I was talking earlier about how important it was for
Camus to get a first down. I think it's really
important here for Sumner to get a first down. We
saw that Camus offense get into a bit of a rhythm,
and the last thing you want to do if your
Sumner is get allow them back on the field.
Speaker 1 (37:10):
So crucial third down here for Sunner. Now they have
momentum back on their side. Indeed, so as third down
in two coming up at the forty three yard line,
Sumner territory. Sumner has the ball. Davidson took the snap
and handing off for Isaacs and he will go nowhere
and wrapped up at about the forty two yard line
for no gain and four down coming up. And you
(37:31):
talk about a big stop for Camus Joel.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
Huge stop and a huge decision here for Sumner as
to whether or not they're going to go for it.
Speaker 4 (37:39):
Now.
Speaker 2 (37:39):
There are no subs running on at this present time,
so it looks like Sumner maybe considering going for it
or maybe running what we call freeze and trying to
draw him offside.
Speaker 1 (37:49):
So it looks like Sumner will try to go for
it here as Donovan will hand off for Isaac's cutting
left side breaks for you have to tackle fifty forty
five yard line and taking down of the forty four
inside cam territorious sol a big play for Sumner as
they roll the dice and get the first down.
Speaker 2 (38:04):
And what an interesting formation. They actually go under center
for the first time. They only have one lineman to
the right of the center. Everybody else is left and
they run power and as usually happens in short yardage,
right everybody's up there around the line scrimmage. He just
pops it and takes it for a lot further than
he needs.
Speaker 1 (38:19):
So first in ten here for Sumner coming up at
the Camas forty four yard line, so a big play
to get into their own territory. Donovan out of the
shotgun formation, fires at laft side that's comp by Pope
at about the forty two yard line, sutting free of
a tackle. Now to the thirty five where he's finally
hauled down by a trio of Camist defenders. And it
looked like in on the play there for the paper
(38:41):
makers mainly was Jared Forner. They move it right back
up once again on a gain of eights, and we
just witnessed.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
Why this kid has those offers that you talked about earlier.
He broke about three tackles right there. That play should
have went nowhere, and he ends up getting about nine yards.
Speaker 1 (38:57):
Are they call nine indeed? So second to one coming
up here for the Spartans at the thirty six yard line,
Donovan out of the shotgun formation to his right as
Isaacs they'll call the audible as Donovan takes a snap
on a three step drop waiting and fires it deep
down the left side. This one is out of the
hands up Pope and incomplete as that was broken up
(39:21):
by Jake McGee and Sumner going for broke. It's now
third down coming up.
Speaker 2 (39:26):
Yeah, they tried to run Pope there on a post route.
He was actually open. The Sumner staff is coming on
hinge down there. They think that the CAMAS defender got
there a little bit early. He might have been pass interference,
but no flags. So they're gonna line up and run
third down and one.
Speaker 1 (39:39):
Chase McGee six foot two one ninety senior. We talked
about his exploits and he's in on this offense as well,
but also a state champion in the pole vault for
track and field. So third and one coming up now
for Sumner at the CAMAS thirty five yard line. Donovan
took the snap, padding off for Isaacs shutting one, tackled
now to the twenty nine yard line. He's taken down.
(40:02):
That's good enough for a first half of the Southerner Spartans,
and that's a lot of what we saw in the
first quarter.
Speaker 2 (40:07):
Just power football right off tackle, pull a guard, lead around,
and they kind of went away from it early in
this series, but now they're back to it and they're
threatening to get into the red zone here shortly.
Speaker 1 (40:17):
Camas coming up that twenty eight to twenty win against
Gonzaga Prep and then thirty five twenty one as well
against Arlington. But we are well on our way right
now to seeing then pacing for a season low on points,
and some were giving them all they can handle. On
first and ten of the twenty eight yard line, Donovan
(40:38):
fires that right side and that is off the hands
and incomplete of Kainoa Grounds. That's second down coming up.
Speaker 2 (40:45):
Yeah, Grounds was open the quarterback there. Donovan just never
really got his feet set to be able to get
the power that he needed on that throw to get
it out to the curl. He needs that young man
needs to get a seat that his feet and throw
that ball out there.
Speaker 1 (41:01):
Got a great game here for you. Sumner and Camas
all tight at seven apiece in the four A state
title game with now three to Zho nine to go
in the second quarter, and it's second and ten for
Sumner at the Camas twenty nine yard line. Donovan out
of the shotgun formation, single back. That's Isaacs. He'll hand
off now for Isaac's big holding out of the right
side twenty five to twenty and taking down and out
of the nineteen yard line, where that is pushing the
(41:24):
first down marker but will not be enough. A third
down coming up here.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
Third down, but a third down and manageable by the
yard and a half. This is right where Sumner wants
it with their power run game.
Speaker 1 (41:36):
So Sumner got on the board with Steve Isaacs running
in for twenty five yards and they have stayed to
their brand and it's working so far in this game.
As we're all tight at seven apiece with two thirty
seven to go in the second quarter.
Speaker 2 (41:48):
I wouldn't be surprised it goes into Isaac's hands again
right here, third.
Speaker 1 (41:51):
And two at the twenty yard line. Donovan out of
the shotgun formation, handing off to Isaacs and he's wrapped
up at about the twenties. So no gain on the play,
and it looked like that Luke Webb was the one
who took him down. So fourth down coming up here
for the Spartans.
Speaker 2 (42:06):
Decision time for coach Ross. They tried a field goal
on a previous drive and it just missed hitting off
the upright. Looks like they're gonna go for it here.
I don't not see the field goal team running on.
Speaker 1 (42:19):
We're not at that stage yet of the game. But
to the words Dan Campbell mean anything to you, all
that craziness from last.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
Week, Yeah, I'll tell you this. This is a really
important decision here for coach Ross and his staff.
Speaker 1 (42:31):
Well, work once, why not twice on the same drive.
Speaker 2 (42:34):
Like the play clock's gonna wind down, they probably are
gonna take a time out here and talk about this.
Speaker 1 (42:39):
So they're waiting and waiting, and now they'll finally take
their time out. And that's the first for a sumner
of this half.
Speaker 2 (42:47):
So that's a good time out. That's a good time out.
Get everybody over, get on the same page. Talk about
what you anticipate the defense is going to do based
on what your alignment is going to be, and make
sure everybody's on the same page.
Speaker 1 (43:00):
Take a brief break. You're listening to the twenty twenty
four WIAA Geeza State Football Championships presented by the Seattle
Seahawks on sports trade a nine fifty kjim Austin Fentz
a thirty eight yard field goal. Try this one a
line drive and wide left. That's no good, So we
stay tied. At seven, Apiece and Sumner use the time
(43:21):
out to try to reset themselves here and they go
for the triple instead and no good off the kick. Yeah,
you know, they came over, talked about it, decided the
field goal is probably the smartest thing to go do.
Speaker 2 (43:33):
They just can't get it through the upright saint.
Speaker 1 (43:37):
So the twists and turns are building up here in
this four A state title game with one forty four
to go in the half, and Camus gets the football,
they're going to get it back as well in the
second half. First and tenure for the paper Makers. Davidson
takes himself and wrapped up at about the twenty one
yard line, so again of roughly one on the play,
it looks like and it should be second down to
(43:59):
nine coming up here for Camas.
Speaker 2 (44:00):
And all of these runs by Davison are designed runs.
Like I said, you don't run that running back. He
becomes that extra blocker. Coach Mattheson thinks they need an
extra blocker to to get any kind of effective run
game going against the Sumner and defensive front.
Speaker 1 (44:16):
Second down to nine coming up here for Camus summer
twenty one yard line. As now, Davis out of the
shotgun formation, He'll hand off for Brody cutting left side
of the twenty yard line twenty five and Titan Brody
pushed out of bounds for a gain of five on
the play, it looks like in third down coming up
here for Camus.
Speaker 2 (44:32):
Yeah, it kind of is the idea. If we can't
run it between the tackles, let's hand it on the
jet sweep, get out onto the perimeter, find that green grass.
Speaker 1 (44:42):
So third down and roughly four coming up here for
Camas with one o seven to go in the second quarter.
The paper makers have rarely gone to the air, and
I'm talking about the deep ball here in this one
and limited for what Sumner has given them. Davidson, now
out of the shotgun formation, takes a snap, flings it
(45:03):
now left side of that as well, out of the
reach of writer Jacobson at about the forty two yard line.
AD's in complete and Camus has gotta pump this one
away here on four down.
Speaker 2 (45:13):
Yeah, that was a case of the receivers in the
quarterback not being on the same page. He throws that
little perimeter screen ball, but both receivers ran long, so
one of those receivers didn't get the message that they
were supposed to hitch up there and get that ball.
Speaker 1 (45:27):
So Camus will boot this one away as Wyat Pyler
bat to receive here with one o four to go
in the second quarter. A defensive fistfight and is evolving
here between the Papermakers and the Spartans in the four
A state title game. A little bit of a wild
snap left side, but this one is now booted that
the inside Hashmark Pylo takes himself at about the thirty
(45:49):
six yard line, breaking free of one tackle now to
the fifty. That's where he's taken down right back at midfield.
So Sunder will get one more crack at this with
fifty three seconds to go in the first half.
Speaker 2 (46:00):
Yeah, and they're gonna get a midfield good return there
by the punt return team. And we'll see what Sumner
can put together here in this final fifty three seconds.
Speaker 1 (46:07):
So you're limited by what Sumner can do. They are
a ground attack game. They're a smash mouthed game right now.
But we have seen the exploits of Steve el Isaacs
here this evening, so we'll see what Keith Ross is
cooking here at this point.
Speaker 2 (46:20):
But we've seen Donovan take some shots. He's got his
live arm, he's got a strong arm. He can spin it.
So we'll see what they do here.
Speaker 1 (46:26):
Thawing out A little bit of this game has gone
along as Donovan out of the shotgun formation, took the snap,
shuffling out of the right side and he's hauled down
at about the thirty nine yard or thirty four yard
line and the sacerd quarter by Zuko Lopez. So a
loss of five yards on the play. It's second and
fifteen coming.
Speaker 2 (46:45):
Up, and if you're Camas, you're thrilled with that. You
only rush for you get to drop seven in coverage
and you still get home. So good job by Camus there.
Speaker 1 (46:53):
Sumner goes right back out of the shotgun. Donovan handing
off for Isaacs, breaks free of one tackle now cutting
right side to mid field and he's hauled down but
didn't get out of bounds as well, So they get
five yards back on the play with the clock still
ticking with sixteen seconds left, and now it looks like
that Sumner will burn their second time out of the half.
Speaker 2 (47:11):
Yeah, and then you have to burn that time out
there or else you're just not going to get back
on the ball. And give yourself any meaningful time.
Speaker 1 (47:18):
Back in a bit, you're listening to the twenty twenty
four WYAA Geza State Football Championships presented by the Seattle
Seahawks on Sports Radio nine to fifty kJ area. But
we have hit the pinnacle of the high school football
season as the four A state title game all tight
at seven apiece here in the twenty twenty four WYA
GEESA State Football Championships presented by the Seattle Seahawks. It
(47:42):
is Camas seven and Sumner's seven and the playsty call
the greatest setting, all filled with tradition and passion Tree.
And one of the men in charge right here of
this is Mick Hoffman, executive director of the WIAA, joining
us here live upstairs. Mid great to have you, thank
you here for doing this back of Husky Stadium once again,
and you get a bevy of fans, players, communities all together.
(48:06):
What does this week mean to you?
Speaker 4 (48:08):
Well, it's a great way to end our fall season.
I mean it's a beautiful place. The kids. You watch
these kids come in and walk down on the field
even in pregame, and whether a cheerleader, a player, coaches,
I mean it's something that you know, a lot of
people don't get an experience, and so for us to
be able to provide that opportunity for them, and you
know that's why.
Speaker 1 (48:28):
We do it. How much does this vend you have
to do with the vision that you want for everyone
who files in for these type of games over the years.
Speaker 4 (48:36):
I mean, our goal is to make positive lifetime memories
for kids, and a facility like this really enhances the
opportunity for that.
Speaker 3 (48:44):
So they work hard.
Speaker 4 (48:45):
They've played some really nice high school stadiums during the year,
but be able to come someplace you see on TV
every week and has a history.
Speaker 3 (48:51):
Like this as nice as this place is, I mean,
this is just really the icing on the cake.
Speaker 1 (48:56):
Let's us go back here. So when this all evolved
in Jen Cohen was a big part of the circle
to make this scene come to life. Since now moved
on to other pastors in sunny southern California here, But
when it came time to make the shift, how did
it happen and how and also why did it happen?
Speaker 4 (49:14):
Yeah, I mean we always want to try to go
in the best facilities we can, but as a nonprofit,
I mean, we've got to be able to sell tickets
and pay for it, and this helps pay for some
other events, and so we really need to make it
pencil out. And you know, Jen started that process, and
I'll tell you Dan Ericson, Associate ad here, has been
absolutely phenomenal to deal with him and his team, and
(49:35):
they got it to a number that we could we
could work for them work for us, and so we've
been able to do it. We're in this year and
we've committed to next year.
Speaker 1 (49:44):
What's one example of Dan Rickson and his style of
communication that really made this process go as easy as possible.
Speaker 4 (49:51):
Yeah, well, Andy Barnes on our staff really does the
work for this.
Speaker 3 (49:54):
So Andy deserves the credit, but.
Speaker 4 (49:56):
They just have constant dialogue and walking the facility and
finding out, okay, what does University Washington need to protect
this asset right and at the same time give us
enough access. So a perfect example is they let us
use our own ticket and so that saves us from
having to pay a lot of extra people. So we
have adults, but we also have student groups here that
(50:16):
are working in earning money for their schools. So like
Ron distincon Johnny Lee Athletic directors out of Tacoma.
Speaker 3 (50:22):
They're hell here helping us run it. We use a
lot of volunteers.
Speaker 4 (50:26):
We probably have twenty some students that are out running
the gates with the adults coming in and teaching people
how to use electronics and helping them get in and
answering their questions. And again as an education base, what
an experience for kids beyond the kids who are on
the field we're talking about.
Speaker 1 (50:41):
What a chance to put something like that on the resume,
especially at that kind of age. Mick Hoffman joining us,
Executive director of the WYAA make a long time ago
there was the Kingdome, and this place has seen its
crown jewel of stadiums and venues here for a game
like this, the Tacoma Dome, then for this event the
big venues back now with Husky Stadium. What's the long
(51:02):
term vision of where this event wants to be.
Speaker 4 (51:04):
Well, ideally we don't have to keep moving around, right
that as long as the Huskies that works for them.
I know the Big ten's looking at some scheduling possible changes,
so they might go a little deeper in the season,
so we'll have to coordinate schedules. Luminfield has become a
more viable option possibly as well, with them having paid
the mortgage on that and so being a nonprofit. And
then with what's going on in Seattle with Monroe of Seattle,
(51:26):
Public Schools, Cities of Seattle, you know they're going to
knock down the Memorial and rebuild that into a world
class facility. So we're going to have some options in
the area, but an ideal world as long as the
University Washington wants keep working with us, we'd love to
keep working with them because they've been so gracious and
such good hosts to us.
Speaker 1 (51:44):
What's the reaction you get when you talk to programs about, hey,
you reached the estate title game. We're talking about playing
a Husky Stadium or even maybe looming down the road.
Speaker 3 (51:51):
Yeah, well we'll get a lot less hate mail.
Speaker 1 (51:55):
And less hate mail is a good thing. It is
a good thing. Nick Hoffin joining us here, Nick didn't
want to bring this up. It's been a news where
the item over the last few months, the transfer portal
is something that has taken over the college game. It's
been a hot topic among the high school scene. Where
does the WIAA stand present day here on this?
Speaker 4 (52:14):
Yeahn our goal is to honor. In our state, we
have a school choice and we get a lot of
legal challenges to elgibilding. I mean, I do my job's
mostly dealing with attorneys. So fortunately we have people like
Andy Barnes who run events and so what we're looking
at as an amendment where we might give students a
choice once in the summer to where they could move
(52:35):
with less penalty. Right now, they basically have to place
ub varsite for a year if it's not a full
family mover under hardship. So we've had a committee of
over thirty of our members meeting for a year. They've
had I think fourteen meetings now by looking at that
to come up with their proposal. So an ideal world,
we don't want a portal, right, but what we do
need is we need to make sure the legislators that
(52:57):
we're proposing legislation last year would have created a portal
and the judges that are asking us, how come you're
not letting students move around more like others where we
can find a happy media and so we're trying to
find something that works for.
Speaker 3 (53:11):
Kids and that the adults will stay out of the way, essentially.
Speaker 1 (53:14):
Appreciate the update there for you. Finally, what's the best
day on the job for you?
Speaker 3 (53:19):
You know, it's days like this. Honestly, I go.
Speaker 4 (53:21):
I try to make all our events and we have
some phenomenal events a lot of people maybe don't see
unless they're really connected to that sport activity. I mean
our dance and drill. I mean my buddies who who
I worked with for years in schools, when I tell
them that, I'm like, you got to come see this thing,
like the performances, the quality of the performances, and then
the fun. So it's days like this, honestly when we
(53:42):
get to watch kids work and the other ones is
like during the week, I'll just sneak out and go
to a game and a lot of people still don't
know who I am. It's great and so I can
just slide in and go enjoy watching kids compete. And
when when you see kids competing hard and having fun
and adults working with them, you know that that's what
we do, that's what we tried to create, and when
(54:02):
you see it happening, it's it's pretty rewarding to walk
out of there.
Speaker 1 (54:05):
And it's gotta feel great after this is all done.
To have your head hip Pellow and say we did it.
Speaker 3 (54:10):
We did it.
Speaker 1 (54:11):
Mick, thank you very much for joining Thanks, thanks wonderful
event here once again, that's Mick Hoppen joining us here
for the wy AA We're at halftime here for the
four A State title game. Sumner seven, Cammas seven. A
lot to talk about and it involves defense as well.
Joel Benson back with us in just a bit recap
numbers and more. You're listening the twenty twenty four wy
(54:32):
AA GIZA State Football Championships sent up by the Seattle
Seahawks on Sports Radio nine fifty kJ Arim Well buckle up,
but the first half was an omen We're in for
a grand finished year in the four A State title game. Officially,
the twenty twenty four wy AA Geza State Football Championships
(54:52):
was sent ed by the Seattle Seahawks. Mike Bent and
Joel Vincent with you, Cammas seven. Sumner seven was an
offensive fistfights so far here for this game, and Joel
we talked about he got two polar opposite teams squaring
off here to for tonight camus all about finesse, all
about offense. They had the top passer in the state.
But Sumner loves the three yards and the cloud of
(55:13):
dust approach. And right now, Sumner keeping this this game
closer with it with their own defense.
Speaker 2 (55:18):
Yeah, they're keeping it close for the defense, but they're
also keeping it close with that possession offense. Right If
they can run the ball effectively stretch those drives out,
that limits the amount of time that Camus is on
the field. So both of those things are are very
good in Sumner's categories.
Speaker 1 (55:32):
Let's recap out this one got going scoring wise. Sumner
first got on the board on a twenty five yard
touchdown run by Steel Isaacs back in the first quarter,
and that puts Sumner on top seven to nothing.
Speaker 2 (55:42):
Yeah, that first drive, they just kind of are the
first scoring drive. They just kind of took it to Camas,
just ran it right at him, and Camus really did
not have an answer. Now, as the game progressed, they
made it tougher. Sumner was having to throw the ball.
But yeah, that first drive was all about physicality and
running the football.
Speaker 1 (55:57):
That came with six fifty one to go on the
first quarter and then was six thirteen left. It was
Nico Spear who hauled in a one handed grab for
a nine yard touchdown reception just inside of the left
pylon to help tie things up. Just a spectacular play
by a spectacular athlete ties the ball game up. And
you know, here we are seven to seven in a
four A state title game with a half to go.
(56:17):
What could be better when stell Isaac's already racking up
one hundred and twenty one yards rushing and we're only
through halftime. Then on the sumner's side, on the opposite
side of that, Jay Davidson leading rusher twenty two yards.
But also can you believe this eight of twelve sixty
nine yards to spite one touchdown?
Speaker 3 (56:35):
As well?
Speaker 2 (56:35):
Well, both those stats jump off the page of me.
If you would have told me that Davidson was the
leading rusher and he was limited to under seventy yards passing,
I would not have believed you. Both those numbers jump
off the page to me.
Speaker 1 (56:47):
All right, So as these teams filed back onto the
field of touch on this or three keys here for
the second half.
Speaker 2 (56:51):
Well, as you know, when two great teams get together,
the margin of error is very slim. So both teams
got a limit. Mistakes, penalties, turnovers could be something that
swings this game Okay, number two, limit explosives. Both teams
have done that. There haven't been really any big, big
plays down the field, big chunk plays that have turned
into scores, and I think both teams need to keep
doing that. And then the other thing is there will
(57:13):
be something that happens this half to each team. How
does that team respond, How do they weather the storm?
How do they fight back when that negative thing happens.
Speaker 1 (57:23):
We had this conversation back during the commercial break rushing yards.
You want to compare this as well, Sumner doing all right,
twenty three for one hundred and seventeen, Camas seventeen for
thirty eight.
Speaker 3 (57:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (57:34):
Yeah, Camus has got to figure out a way to
run the ball to give their offense a little bit
more balance.
Speaker 1 (57:41):
So it will be Camas here to receive for the
second half. As these two teams had a crack at
the end zone in the last two minutes of play.
Fail to do so, and we'll get the second half
of this game all set to go on a matter
of moments. So how this one ends up, Well, it's
(58:05):
gonna go right down to the finish, and we're talking
about these two teams and how opposite they were there
was a question what either a would Camas have their
way with their offense, But we're also finding out that
be defense travels well.
Speaker 2 (58:18):
Well, there's the old adage right offense sales tickets, defensive
wins championship. So both teams played really, really well defensively.
The team that wins this game is gonna be able
to be that team that can play great defensively for
all four quarters.
Speaker 1 (58:30):
So how Sumner got here? Of course, they had to
go through a firestorm to reach the state title game.
We touched on Camas has win over Gonzaga Prep, and
as far as Sumner was concerned, it took triple ot
to do it over at chi Jawana, Steel Isaac's got
the game winning touchdown by leaping inside of the left pylon.
And in Sumner fashion, it was all about energy, where
Carter Coke says Steel will sell anything in his body
(58:53):
to score and I try to match this energy. This
team is all about energy.
Speaker 2 (58:56):
All about energy, all about hype, all about just being
there and rallying each other. It's evident in the way
they play, in the way they carry themselves and how
they pick each other up.
Speaker 1 (59:08):
So we're about a couple of minutes away here from
still getting this half going as we're all tied at
seven apiece between Camus and Sumner, and it's been quite
the run of dominance here for Camus over the years.
They're looking to add to their legacy run of titles,
this being their first title game since twenty nineteen when
they won that year and had a state title game
(59:28):
as well back in twenty sixteen. But you ask anybody
Joel around town, and they're a big fish in a
small pond. Add in Camus, Washington, that football program is
all that should need many town. The facilities which are
state of the art, the weight room, Doc Hara Stadium,
and even the red turf practice field, and that town
is really eating up the program over the years.
Speaker 2 (59:49):
In Clark County, absolutely phenomenal community to support. I got
a chance to go down there two weeks ago and
we covered the Camus Arlington playoff game and their facility
these are second to none. It was I felt like
I was on the grounds of like a small college
when you have those kinds of facilities, that kind of
community support. Their booster club was just off the charts.
(01:00:12):
The hospitality that they showed, not only us when we
were down there as a broadcast team, but also the
visiting fans. It was just a fantastic atmosphere for high
school football.
Speaker 1 (01:00:22):
I have seen some college operations run on a smaller
scale as well, and that's got to do a lot
for a lot of the kids who play in that
program year after year after year.
Speaker 2 (01:00:31):
Yeah, and you know, when you build it right, they
will come. And this is a this is a proof
of that. The culture, the climate, the community all sets
them up to sixteen.
Speaker 1 (01:00:42):
All right, So we're set here for the second half
as Sumner will kick it off, Austin Farns to boot
this one away and the lone man waiting in the
back is Jared Forner set to receive as Camus will
go left to right and their home black jerseys, matching pants,
black Matt helmets as well, looking sharp down there as
we took a walk in the field back in pregame
(01:01:03):
with white numbers and Sumner and white helmets, jerseys and
pants with navy numbers. Forensians kick and over ran down
the middle and taken out by Poner to the twenty
yard line and kind of the right side. He's hauled
down now at just inside the twenty beggar pardon and
a return of about roughly seventeen yards in Camas said
to take over in their own territory. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:01:23):
Well, you know, this is a really important drive for
both the Sumner defense and the Camas offense. You know,
this game in the second half is all about adjustments,
and we're going to see some of those right in
this first drive, so offensively undefensively.
Speaker 1 (01:01:36):
So we will see what Jake Davidson can cook up
as he was limited back in the second half or
the second Quarterbagger pardon first and second quarter, And on
first and ten, this handoff goes up the middle and
it's Brody taken down for no gaining about roughly the
seventeen yard line. Second down coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:01:55):
That's kind of more of the same what we saw
the first half. Just not a lot of running room
on the interior there for the papermakers.
Speaker 1 (01:02:02):
So they give it a gain of two officially, so
it will be second and ain't coming up here for
the papermakers. As Davidson will go out of the shotgun formation,
Titan Brody longman on the backfield to his right, Davidson
takes a snap play action and now looking left side,
takes it himself lost of football right down with the
(01:02:25):
twenty five yard line, and Sumner gets it right back
and falling on it looked like was Taylor Reebar what
is top of the defense?
Speaker 2 (01:02:33):
And they'll take over and here's where Camus has to
weather the storm. That's what we were just talking about.
You knew this game was going to have some pivotal,
big play like this. Now, how does Camus respond? Can
Sumner punch it in here?
Speaker 1 (01:02:46):
And it had been relatively clean for the first half,
and that's the really the first big mark we have
seen or a stain on any offense so far. Yeah,
minus a handful of penalties, which were pretty minor penalties,
this is the first big pivotal.
Speaker 2 (01:02:59):
Moment of the game.
Speaker 1 (01:03:00):
Well, first and ten here for Sumner at the Camas
twenty five yard line, with Donovan out of the shotgun formation,
Isaac's lowman of the backfield. Isaacs took the handoff and
cutting right side around and out of the twenty. He's
taken out of about the fifteen yard line for a
gain of nine pushing maybe ten. We'll wait and see
what happens here. But with eleven zero four left here
(01:03:21):
in the second quarter, already Sumner's starting to move.
Speaker 2 (01:03:25):
Yeah, mister Isaac's bloit. He just knows one speed and
that is full speed. He is always going forward, falling forward,
great leg drive and now Sumner's facing about second in
about two maybe a.
Speaker 1 (01:03:36):
Long two bubbill be spotted at the Camas sixteen yard
line as both teams all tied seven apiece and now
Davidson out of the shotgun formation, Isaac's low man of
the backfield, man in motion out of the right side.
Donovan took the snap and handing off for Isaac's up
the gut. He goes out of the ten yard line
of the five, gets one push, forcing his way to
the goal line. He's into the end zone. Touchdown for Sumner.
Speaker 2 (01:03:59):
That was all will. That was all will he probably
had on that that run. Probably eight of those yards
were after contact or while being contacted, including just steamrolling
a Chemist defender right at the goal line.
Speaker 1 (01:04:14):
Second touchdown run for Steel Isaacs this evening, who has
taken over this game and it is this seventeenth rushing
touchdown of the season that was impressive. So Sumner on
top thirteen to seven, and this magical night getting even
more magical for Keith Ross extra point is on the
way and it is good fourteen to seven in favor
(01:04:36):
of the Spartans. Nastel Isaacs runs it in for a
second touchdown of the night. We'll step aside once again
once more. Our score Sumner fourteen and Camus seven. You're
listening to the twenty twenty four wyaa Geza State Football
Championships set up by the Seattle Seahawks on sports Radio
nine point fifty KJR Austin f NZ. Back to kick
(01:05:02):
this one off here with Sumner fourteen seven, ten fifty
four to go in the third quarter, and this one's
a line drive well over the head of Anthony Forner
and into the end zone. It will be a touchback
here and Camus set to take over once again looking
for an answer as a trail by seven after the
second touchdown run of the night by Steve Isaacs.
Speaker 2 (01:05:22):
This next four to six minutes for Camus is absolutely critical.
How they respond to that turnover and quick touchdown by Sumner.
This this is that storm that we were talking about.
Let's see how they respond.
Speaker 1 (01:05:34):
Davidson taking over first and ten back at the Camas
twenty yard line as he takes a snap and flings
it out of the right side. That s cop By
McDonald twenty to the twenty five yard line and pushed
right back out of bounds at about roughly the twenty
seven yard line. But the flag also comes out on
the play, and it looked like Jaden Benson was in there,
and we'll get the confirmation coming up in a bit.
Speaker 2 (01:05:53):
Yeah, it looks like the official thinks that the Sumner
defender gave him a little extra extra as he was
escorting him out of bounds there. It's probably gonna be
a personal foul penalty of some sort of unnecessary roughness,
probably for fifteen yards. I'm gonna guess here. We haven't
seen an official signal.
Speaker 1 (01:06:11):
Yet, so we're still waiting on this, and they're gonna
move this one up indeed here for Camus.
Speaker 2 (01:06:17):
Yeah, and it was a personal foul call. So fifteen
yards and a first down for Camus. That's going to
help their cause here. Obviously, new set of downs, much
better field position. We'll see if Camus can take advantage
of this.
Speaker 1 (01:06:30):
So the paper Maker is going to break its first
and ten back at their own forty one yard line,
looking for an answer. Jake Davidson out of the shotgun
formation Titan Brody Lohman in the backfield, Davidson flings it
right side cop by McDonald the fifty yard line and
shove right back out of bounds by Benson once again
from about roughly a gain of seven on the play,
maybe eight, but second down coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:06:50):
Yeah, those Sumner quarterbacks are playing nine yards off. I
would keep throwing that until they move them up there.
You are just giving you that, So expect more of
the same until we see some type of alignment change
out of Sumner.
Speaker 3 (01:07:02):
Here.
Speaker 1 (01:07:02):
A lot of the short chipped passes that Davidson's got
an opt to, but it's working right now, especially here
on this drive as Sumner's on top fourteen to seven
here in the third quarter of the four A state
title game, Davidson out of the shotgun fire's right side
cut by McGee, but at his own forty nine yard line,
he's hauled down. That's a loss of one coming up
in a big stop there for Sumner and third down
(01:07:24):
right around the corner.
Speaker 2 (01:07:25):
Yeah, that's a big stop right there, and it's going
to force Canvas into a really really critical third down
and three here to see if they can extend.
Speaker 3 (01:07:32):
This drive.
Speaker 1 (01:07:34):
And you gotta kind of wonder when that next deep
ball is around the corner here. For Davidson, it's been
a rare option for him this evening.
Speaker 2 (01:07:43):
Well, the two or three times he's tried, there's just
been nobody open because Sumner's done a great job on
the back half with their coverage.
Speaker 1 (01:07:50):
You're playing with what you're giving right now. So third
down and four coming up, or third down and three,
beggar pardon. Davidson took the snap, rolls out lab side
side arms ut across the middle of that's caught at
the subner forty five yard line by Foreigner and that's
good enough for a first down.
Speaker 2 (01:08:07):
Yeah, foreigner was hit pretty good. He's looks like he's
going to exit the game. Davidson there almost looked mahomessh
right kind of rolling out to his left sidearm, fling
to that curl route. Forner took a pretty good shot.
He walked himself out. That's good news. But he has
a substitutio now.
Speaker 1 (01:08:26):
So Foreigner is out and it looks like that writer
Jacobson will check back in in place as a freshet
of downs coming up here for Camas first and ten
at the Sumner forty nine yard line. David send back
out of the shotgun short passing out of the left
side of the forty yard line. That's caught by McGee
(01:08:47):
and Forrest just in bounds as that clock will still
run in a gain of four in the play.
Speaker 2 (01:08:52):
Yeah, I would hope and I would expect Coach Mattheson here,
they've thrown a lot of that perimeter, bubble screen stuff,
pump fake that that block who's been going out to
block the whole time, then goes on a go route.
I think that would be there if they would decide to.
Speaker 1 (01:09:04):
Call it fourteen seven again in favor of Sumner. Nine
o weight to go. In the third quarter of the
four A State title game from Husky Stadium, Davidson out
of the shotgun formation once again. On second and six,
He'll drop back to throw fires a deep down the
left sideline. This one is cut into the end zone
McGee for the touchdown.
Speaker 2 (01:09:25):
Spectacular throw. Kind of almost was back shoulder that was
well covered by the way by the Sumner defender, but
just a great throw, great catch.
Speaker 1 (01:09:35):
A forty three yard missile from Jake Davidson. That's a
Jake Davidson many have seen this season as he connects
with Jase McGee for his twenty touchdown reception of the season.
Speaker 2 (01:09:47):
We were wondering when we were going to see that.
That was fantastic.
Speaker 1 (01:09:51):
So Davidson able to air it out on that play
and Tyler now back for the extra point for Camas
and the kick is on the way and it is
easily good. So all square once again, eight p fifty
two to go. As Camus saw the door open and
Jay Davidson to Chase McGee busted that thing right on down.
(01:10:14):
We're tied fourteen a piece. You're listening with the twenty
and twenty four WIAA Giza State Football Championships. Said about
the Seattle Seahawks on Sports Radio nine fifteen kJ R
A M. When the game is over, make a Dix run.
What's your go to when you make a Dick's run too?
(01:10:35):
Chees Burgers and some fries. That sounds good. Maybe a
deluxe and a shake kind of person. How about a
special burger and a Sunday Well. For seventy years, Dix
driving still serves up the best food of the best
price in the shortest time. Stop into one of the
nine Puget Sound area Dick's drive in Locations today. I
am hungry already fourteen a piece right here in the
four A state title game. Mike betting Joel Vincent with
(01:10:58):
you at Camus's kick is booting out on the right
side and taking it down to the twenty five yard line.
This is Pilo had taken right back down, so a
return of roughly ten yards and Sun are gonna go
right back to work here with this game all tied
fourteen apiece and eight to forty one.
Speaker 3 (01:11:13):
To go in the third quarter.
Speaker 2 (01:11:14):
Well, we wondered if Cannabis would answer the bell right
after the turnover and the quick score by Sumner, and
with the resounding yes, they answered the bell for sure.
Speaker 1 (01:11:26):
So we'll look for the update as far as the
numbers here, but they are bulging here for the run
tolls for Steve Isaacs and they'll take this one on
first and tow on the right side thirty thirty five
yard line and up bendet at about the thirty nine
yard line and taken down by Nico's spear, and that
(01:11:47):
good enough for a first down.
Speaker 2 (01:11:49):
Yeah, eleven yards of the clip aren't isn't gonna hurt
his numbers?
Speaker 3 (01:11:52):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:11:52):
That was a great runoff tackle. He kind of bounced
it outside, and when you see safeties tackling running backs,
that's generally not a very good sign.
Speaker 1 (01:11:59):
For the first and ten thirty eight yard line for Sumner,
Donovan out of the shotgun formation took the snap screen
passing now to the left side. That's cut of the
forty out of the forty two yard line and being
taken down was Pono Borden. So a gain of roughly
five on the play and second down coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:12:16):
And that's what that dominant run game gives you, right
It gives you the option to now mix in a
little bit of pass. They're selling out to stop the run.
Sumner's in a pretty good place here offensively with what
they're able to do.
Speaker 1 (01:12:28):
Already steal Isaacs, as we said, topping one hundred yards
of rushing just through the first half. And we're now
inside eight minutes left in the third quarter with Subner
and Canvas all tied at fourteen apiece. On second and
five back at the Sumner forty three, Davison out of
the shotgun took the snap out and out of the
right side deep ball down the right hash marks this
(01:12:48):
one is caught ten yard line and being hauled down
right back at the five yard line was kind of
a grounds massive gain. Its first and goal coming up
with the Spartans.
Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
Yeah, they actually go play action half roll right, throws
a post route down the right hash marks right on
the money and they are in business here at the
nine yard line, first and goal.
Speaker 1 (01:13:09):
David sends big blast, his first big blast here of
this third quarter, puts Sumner into the red zone with
seven two to go in the third quarter, and they've
got options now, so it's first in goal coming up
and the nine yard line. Would Donovan under or Donovan
Beaker partner out of the shotgun formation and Isaac's lone
man in the backfield, Donovan barks for the Yauda Bowl
(01:13:34):
in this one. The hand off to Isaacs found a
whole left side and he's taken down at about the
nine yard line. So no gain on the play and
second a goal coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:13:43):
Yeah, well done by the Camas defense. They kind of
forced him, bounced him, made him stretch it nowhere for
him to go. He's tackled by a host of papermakers.
Speaker 1 (01:13:53):
So six forty five to go in the third quarter.
In these two teams, it feels like starting to get
a little more warmed up on the offensive side. We're
tied at fourteen apiece, so second and goal at the
nine with Donovan out of the shotgun formation once again.
Took the snap, flings it right side the slam pass
and that one dropped by grounds at about the goal line.
(01:14:17):
Pretty good coverage thereby canas. That's third down at third
and goal coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:14:20):
Yeah, that's Chase McGee who we see can catch a
touchdown earlier. There he is, there's a defended make sure
Sumner doesn't get one on that slant route right at
the goal line.
Speaker 1 (01:14:30):
So as far as Sumner is concerned, We'll see what
Keith Ross has up his sleeve, as they've been stopped
twice getting into the red zone on successive plays. Third
and goal with the nine yard line for Sumner. We're
tied at fourteen apiece. Donovan back out of the shotgun formation.
One man who was left, that is Isaac took the snap,
(01:14:52):
three step drop floats this one left end zone and
it's incomplete and over the head of Carter co okay,
so three tries and no dice for the Spartans. It's
fourth and goal coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:15:05):
Yeah, they isolate him out there on a much smaller
defensive back. They throw a fifty to fifty ball. Ball
was just kind of overthrown just to Tad. Even if
he had caught that, I don't think he would have
been in bounds. And it looks like Sumner's gonna run
the field goal team out here and maybe they'll put
one through the goal posts.
Speaker 1 (01:15:21):
So Austin Ferentz a try of twenty six yards here.
He missed one earlier on a missile, and this one
is up, it's on the way and it is good.
So Austin Ferenz finally nails one through. Was six twenty
one to go here in the third quarter, and Sumner
back on top fourteen or seventeen to fourteen in the
(01:15:43):
four A state title game. We're back in a bit.
You're listening to the twenty twenty four WYAA Giza State
Football Championships present up by the Seattle Seahawks on Sports
Radio nine point fifty KJRM.
Speaker 5 (01:15:55):
We need your help to protect your right to AM
radio in your car. AM is always there in times
of need. With the confirmation for our community, the overwhelming
majority of legislators support a bill to keep AM radio
in cars.
Speaker 1 (01:16:09):
The time is running out.
Speaker 5 (01:16:10):
Please text the two letters A M to five two
eight eighty six and ask Congress to bring this bill
to the floor for a vote.
Speaker 1 (01:16:18):
Now text a M to five to two eight eighty six.
Message in data rates may apply. You may receive up
to four messages. A plump next stop to stop a
message from the station. Foreigner twins back to receive. Here
as Austin Ferentz boots this one away with summoner on
top four seventeen to fourteen, and this kick well deep
(01:16:41):
out of the end zone, we'll skip out of bounds
for a touchback. So Cavas right back to work once again,
and Joey had to consider holding Sunder to just three
points a pretty big win there for the Camus defense.
Speaker 2 (01:16:52):
That's a pretty big win for the Camus defense. I
think what we're learning so far, what we've witnessed here
in the second half, is the offensive staffs. So both
teams make great adjustments. Now it's gonna follow in the
defensive staffs to shoulders to make in game adjustments to
stop these offenses.
Speaker 1 (01:17:06):
So he'll be first in ten here for a Camus
coming up with a twenty yard line and we'll see
what they can do for an answer. At this point,
Davidson back out of the shotgun formation, quick screen pass
lab side copp by McDonald along the numbers, and force
his way to about the twenty two yard line for
only a gain of two. So it should be second
down and eight coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:17:26):
Yeah, both these defenses are impressive. A lot of speed
on both these defenses, and these are defenses that can
run sideline to sideline. It's pretty fun to watch.
Speaker 1 (01:17:34):
They are quick to close in on the ball here,
so it will be officially actually a gain a fore,
so second down and six and this one spotted at
about the twenty four yard line once again, seventeen to
fourteen Sumner over Camus in the four A state title
game from Husky Stadium on a crisp cool night. Mike
(01:17:55):
Bent and Joel Vincent with you. Glad he can be
with us. Davidson back out of the shotgun formation, and.
Speaker 2 (01:18:03):
Yeah, Camus is going to take a time out here, right.
There was some confusion receivers for having some problems getting
lined up and they were just up against the play clock.
Speaker 1 (01:18:10):
There will step aside once again. You're listening to the
twenty twenty four WYAA Geese State Football Championships presented by
the Seattle Seahawks on Sports Radio nine to fifty kJ arem.
Second out and six, and Davidson's long bomb is in
completing well over the head of Jake McDonald's So third
down and six coming up here for Camus as sunder
(01:18:31):
on top seventeen fourteen here, third quarter.
Speaker 2 (01:18:34):
Yeah, well covered thereby Sumner. Actually two defenders running with
the receiver. Probably a good thing.
Speaker 1 (01:18:38):
That thing was overthrown Davidson out of the shotgun formation,
Brody to his right, play action and this one flung
out of the right side, and that one's cut by
McDonald thirty two yard line and he's forced out of bounds.
It looks like maybe enough here for a first a
gain of roughly eight, and yet they will give.
Speaker 3 (01:18:58):
It to him.
Speaker 1 (01:18:58):
So the chains move and a fresh set here for Camus.
Speaker 2 (01:19:01):
Yeah, those are just an example of well coached receivers right,
know where the sticks are, get what you need, not
much more, and trust that that quarterback you're gonna get
that ball out to you. You're gonna get get that
first down.
Speaker 1 (01:19:12):
So first and ten now for Camas, ball moving up
to their own thirty two yard line, a trail by
three is Davidson out of the shotgun, handing off now
for Titan Brody busting his way left side through a
hole and now up bending of the forty or thirty
nine yard line. Begger pardon and in on the tackle
there Taylor reebar for a gain of five yards. Second
down coming up, and.
Speaker 2 (01:19:32):
That might be the best run we've seen tonight out
of a Camus running back. Five yards. It just kind
of speaks to how hell what a great job Sunner
has done defensively.
Speaker 1 (01:19:41):
Second down and five Now after the thirty eight yard line,
Begger pardon and Davidson right back out of the shotgun
once again. Low snap fires at left side once again,
that's Koppy McGee twisting his way off one tackle breaking
three forty thirty five thirty twenty five, twenty dayline, nothing
but grass ahead into the end zone for a touchdown.
Speaker 2 (01:20:00):
Yeah, miss tackler or two there and he takes advantage.
He just takes it to the house. How about that?
Speaker 1 (01:20:08):
Two straight drives and Camus is able to find an
answer in the passing scheme, this one for thirty seven
yards and they're on top twenty seventeen.
Speaker 2 (01:20:18):
Yeah, and that's the same play they've probably run about
a dozen times. But right there, Sumner just doesn't make
the tackle. A couple of mistackles and he's off to
the races and looks like the Camas is gonna take
the lead here and see what they do here with
this extra point.
Speaker 1 (01:20:31):
Tyler out now for the extra point as McGee gets
his second touchdown reception of the night, snapes down point
after a kick is on the way and it is good.
So it's a twenty one seventeen lead for Camas as
their offense really starting to thaw out right now. Two
successive drives, two touchdown passes by their star quarterback Jake Davidson.
(01:20:53):
You're listening to the twenty twenty four WIAA Geese to
State Football Championships. We'll keep it right here as is
twenty one seventeen in favor of Camus over Sumner.
Speaker 2 (01:21:04):
Yeah, boy, we were wondering where the offenses were the
first half. Well we found him right they're they're here.
Whatever they said to their kids at halftime, whatever adjustments
they made on both sides, Sumner and Camus seem to
be working. And now it's gonna fall on the on
the on the shoulders of the defensive staffs here to
see if they can stem the tide and get some
stops from the other team.
Speaker 1 (01:21:24):
So Jake Davidson up to fifty two touchdown passes, Peyton
manning S numbers here in his senior season, and the
question bears where will he play. It's curious that we
haven't seen much news as far as what's next for him.
Speaker 2 (01:21:36):
I have not, and I don't know if if football
is in his future. Maybe it's not by choice. Maybe
you know, maybe he said it to Mit or doing
something and something like that. But yeah, you're right, it's
very interesting.
Speaker 1 (01:21:47):
Six foot three hundred and eighty pounds to take a
look at him right back on the sideline. Very well
built and well built as well to handle a mobile
type of game. But he's let his arm air out now.
In the second half, were back to back touchdown passes
here in successive drive. So twenty one seventeen in favor
of canvases. We'll keep it right here for this next possession.
(01:22:08):
Mike Bent and Joel Vincent with you. Glad you can
be with us. Tyler booms this one away and right
down the left sideline. This is caught right back of
the five yard line and taking this one now to
the thirty to thirty five yard line and breaking free
to the forty and being pushed out of bounds.
Speaker 2 (01:22:24):
Great run by Wyatt Pyler. Yeah, yeah, great return. And
it appears as though we have a late flag down
right about the forty yard.
Speaker 1 (01:22:33):
Line, so there might have been contact where that play ended.
Speaker 3 (01:22:42):
Well, it's true.
Speaker 1 (01:22:43):
The attention here of the officials will wait to confirm
all this in just a little bit. Yeah, it looked
like that Piler was the benefit of some extra physical
contact about roughly ten yards back of where he was
taken down. Yeah, they're gonna wave that flag off, okay,
so scratch that. It will be first and ten coming
(01:23:04):
up here for Sumner at what we'll be the ball
spotted in their own territory and about their own forty
six yard line. So these two teams punching right back
at each other as twenty one to seventeen, Cavas handoff
now to steal Isaac's on first and tent up the gut.
He's taken down for only a three yard gain, and
it'll be second down coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:23:23):
Yeah, Camus is ready for that they're doing a much
better job on it. Between the tackles runs by. Sumner
expects some play action here with some chunk plays throw
plays down the.
Speaker 1 (01:23:35):
Field, so officially a two yard gain, a second and
a coming up for Sumner at their own forty eight
yard line. Donovan took a high snap screen pass fire
left side scot By Borden at the forty five now
of the forty and shove right back at the bounds
by McDonald and that should be good enough for a
first down.
Speaker 2 (01:23:53):
Yep. Sumner's saying, you know what, Cavas, you can throw
that perimeter screen game, we can throw it too, And boy,
I'm really pressed with these Sumner receivers as well.
Speaker 1 (01:24:02):
Pono Borden six foot one, seventy senior at twenty six
receptions entering this four A state title game tonight. First
and ten now for Sumner, camas forty one yard line
and Donovan under center, takes a snap perfect one handing
off for Isaac's rolling out left side forty to the
thirty five yard line, and he's mauled right back in
(01:24:24):
the thirty five by a trio of paper makers that
looked like that sawyer Clifton wasn't on that tackle mostly
and second down coming up here on a game.
Speaker 2 (01:24:32):
Of six, Yeah, Isaacs is impressive. You know, that's a
six yard game, but that's about four of that he
gets by himself, just kind of dragon defenders.
Speaker 1 (01:24:41):
They give him a gain of seven heres. So it's
second down and three with Donovan back out of the
shotgun once again off the play action screen, passing now
to the right side. That's caught at the thirty five
yard line and Carter Koca taken down once again by
a handful of paper makers. No gain the play and
third down coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:25:01):
Yeah, the papermakers there, fortunate because he kind of slipped
and it gave the papermaker defenders time to kind of
close the distance and limit the game. But that was
open early.
Speaker 1 (01:25:12):
So that will be third and three coming up twenty
one seventeen in favor of camas as the papermakers coming
from behind, following up a forty three year pass to
McGee with another big davidsonbam as well. Third down and
three Davidson high snack took it, flings over the middle
(01:25:34):
and that is caught at the ten yard line, rolling
out and out left side and being knocked right back down.
To the one. I think he's in and they get
this one down right to the three. Kindo of grounds,
another big play. It's first end goal coming up here
for Sumner.
Speaker 2 (01:25:49):
Yeah, there's that play action throwed down the field that
I mentioned earlier, well designed, well executed first down and
one first down and one first out a goal from
the one. I'll get it out eventually, Ganoa.
Speaker 1 (01:26:03):
Ground's coming in as long as forty six this season,
and Sumner goes right up the gut and Isaac's taking
down right back at the goal line, so barely any
gain if at all, and second and goal coming up here. Yeah,
that's the same formation, really odd formation we saw in
the fourth and one earlier in the game, but Camus
was ready for it right there. So twenty one seventeen
(01:26:23):
in favor of Camas in this game, living up here
to what's billing. Two of the top top ranked teams
for a level pull the opposites, and they have produced
a dandy of a game here this evening. Second in
goal at the one, Donovan out of the shotgun formation
handing off for Isaacs and he's nailed right back of
the two yard line. Third and goal coming up and
(01:26:46):
Boll Harlan in on the tackle there.
Speaker 2 (01:26:48):
Yeah, he just kind of knifed down from his defensive
end position and kind of caught him from behind before
he could get going. And that's the key to stopping Isaacs, right,
You got to stop him before he gets his motor running.
So that's actually a lot on the play.
Speaker 1 (01:27:01):
So they spot this one right back at the three
as third and goal at the three coming up, and
Camas's defense so far rising to the occasion, but they're
only halfway there. Donovan out of the shotgun formation, Isaac's
low man in the backfield, the handoff goes right to
Isaacs up the gut now cutting left side from the
spin off, one tackle on east mauld again right back
(01:27:23):
in the nine yard line. Now then the loss of
roughly six yards, and once again bow Harlan was there.
It's fourth and goal coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:27:30):
Yeah, Bo Harlan's having quite a defensive stand right here.
Not a great mission in the backfield there between the
running back and the quarterback kind of ran into each other,
and once again Isaacs just can't get going. And here
we are Sumner facing a really really big fourth down play.
Speaker 1 (01:27:46):
And they'll spot this one right back at the five.
So it's fourth and goal coming up, and Sumner is
going to go for it here trailing by four with
thirty eight seconds and taking the third quarter of the
four A state title game. It will be on him
and out of the shotgun formation to take this, and
it looks like a timeout coming up here, Timeout Sumner.
(01:28:07):
So twenty one seventeen in favor of Camus. It will
be fourth end goal at the five, and we're back
in a bit. You're listening to the twenty twenty four
WYAA Geza State Football Championships presented by the Seattle Seahawks
on Sports Radio nine to fifty kJ arem so fans
toward the Camas site, rising here to their feet at
(01:28:29):
Sumner fourth and goal to five and Camus looking for
a big stand. It is twenty one seventeen in favor
of the paper Makers. Donovan under center took the snap
and fires that left side and that is caught at
the five yard line by Pulp. Not enough as he
was hauled right back down by Jared Forner. It's a
turnover on downs and what a stand for the paper Makers.
(01:28:52):
Some of the runs the doubles formation, they're two wide
each side. They try to run a pick play and
Camus is ready for it.
Speaker 3 (01:28:58):
No gain.
Speaker 2 (01:29:00):
They get a big, big defensive stop there, and now
they're gonna take possession at their own five.
Speaker 1 (01:29:05):
So we'll see how much this can swing matters right
back in their favor. And we've seen this offense, thought
right back up, you figure one more big blow that
could really put Sumner against the ropes.
Speaker 2 (01:29:16):
Yeah, especially as we're coming down to the end of
the third quarter.
Speaker 1 (01:29:18):
Here first and ten back at Camas's own five yard line.
Davidson handing off now for Brody left side, and he's
nailed right out about the eight yard line, so roughly
a gain of three and that should run the clock
out here heading right toward the finish line of the
third quarter.
Speaker 2 (01:29:36):
Pretty good run on first down there by Brody to
get that five yards on first down, and that's going
to take us to the end of the quarter.
Speaker 1 (01:29:42):
So as twenty one seventeen in favor of Canas, they've
got the ball in a four point lead heading into
the fourth quarter and one quarter away from their first
eight championship in the Adam Mathieson era, and looking to
add to a legacy. You're listening to the twenty twenty
four wy A Geeza State football Championships were set up
about the Seattle Seahawks on Sports Radio nine to fifteen KJRAM.
(01:30:11):
Fourth quarter in this one's a tight one, but Camus
threatening with their offense. They've begun to thaw out and
they lead twenty one seventeen over Sumner here in the
four A state title game and heading into the fourth
quarter here at.
Speaker 2 (01:30:21):
Usky Stadium, this is where games are won or lost
right in the fourth quarter. It'd be interesting here to
see if Camus can manufacture something march this ball down
the field. If not, worst case scenario, burn as much
time off the clock as possible.
Speaker 1 (01:30:38):
Kind of makes you wonder what scheme that Jay Davidson
has cooked up. He's already aired it out here with
his arm. But how much do you want to go
for broke here with a lead like this?
Speaker 2 (01:30:46):
That's a great question, Mike down here, it's like risk
we work, right, How big a chance do you want
to take down here in your own end? But you
know what, at the same time, you got here by
doing what you do. Just do what you do.
Speaker 1 (01:30:57):
Second and six for Camus right back at their own
nine yard line, and they'll get set here with Davidson
right back into the shotgun formation, Titan Brody one man
in the backfield. Davidson three step drop, fires this one
deep over the middle, and that's incomplete and just out
of the reach of Nicos Spear. He wanted the flag
in the play, and there's nothing coming in this third
down coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:31:17):
Yeah, Now, this is a big third down, and this
is what we were just talking about, risk reward. How
aggressive do you want to be here? What you do
not want down here, deep in your own infrastructure of
the game is a turnal.
Speaker 1 (01:31:30):
He recalled. Jake Davidson held his sixty seven yards passing
back in the first half. He's up to two oh
eight now through three quarters, So third down and six
now for Cavas. Right back at their own nine yard line,
with the paper makers up twenty one seventeen and inching
closer to add to their Milltown legacy. Davidson back out
(01:31:52):
of the shotgun formation. Perfect now, three step drop Forest
toward the end zone, fires this one over the middle.
No one home. That's incomplete and all he want wanted
to do was avoid a two point marker against Camas
and his fourth down coming up, and Sumner was.
Speaker 2 (01:32:06):
Asking for intentional grounding, but the official was quick to
point out the receiver that was in the area. They're
not going to get that call and Camas is gonna
have to punt the football.
Speaker 1 (01:32:14):
So William Taves back to boot this one away with
William Pyler back to receive at about midfield here. So
Sumner once again right back in business, or so it seems.
Speaker 2 (01:32:29):
That's a great defensive stand coming off of that being
shut out of the end zone.
Speaker 1 (01:32:34):
After two consecutive drives on touchdown passes to Chase McGee
and this one almost shank. Sorry Joel had to use
that word once again, toward the left side by Taves
and out of bounds right back at the Camas thirty
yard line. So what a great opportunity here for Sumner.
Speaker 2 (01:32:50):
Yeah, that snap was a little bit low, gave the
punter some trouble and kind of got him out of
his punching rhythm and really didn't get it that far out.
And some's going to take control here of this football
at the thirty yard line and they're right back in business.
So that defensive stand coming off of being shut out
of the zone was huge.
Speaker 1 (01:33:09):
So it will be first and ten coming up here.
For Sumner at the Camas thirty yard line. Donovan took
the snap and hands off for Isaacs. Found the whole
left side, but nothing much. He's taken down at about
the thirty one yard lines. That should be actually a
loss of one and second down coming up here for
the Spartans. Yeah, I'd like to see some to run
some play action. I was watching there he hands the ball,
(01:33:29):
the quarterback boots there's nobody staying home on the Camas
defense on the quarterback boot leg. Maybe there are coaches
will see that upstairs, but Camus is loaded the box.
It's making it really hard for someone to run the
football right here. Steve O. Isaacs had a little more
in check in this third quarter up to the one
hundred and sixty one yards rushing. So it's now second
down and eleven here for Sumner coming up at the
(01:33:49):
thirty one yard line. Donovan back to throw a three
step drop and he's hold down right back in the
thirty one yard line in on the sec Alex Heroza
third down coming up here for some.
Speaker 2 (01:34:00):
Yeah, the Camas defense is showing up right they where
were they? They've played a great game, but boy, they
have really turned it on here in this second half.
Speaker 1 (01:34:10):
So third and eleven coming up here for Sumner, given
a golden opportunity in Camas's defense once again, has come
to play ten forty three to go on the fourth
quarter with Camas up twenty one seventeen. Tonovan now out
of the shotgun formation, low snap, three step drop waiting
(01:34:32):
fires that right across the middle of that's complete right
back at the twenty yard line and being taken down
was Poono Borden for about roughly an eleven yard gain
and not enough here to move the chains for a
first down coming up and more.
Speaker 2 (01:34:45):
Yeah, there was a little confusion there in the Camas defense.
They had trouble getting lined up initially, and Borden got
lined up and matched up against Nico Spear, got his
hips turn and got a great completion in the middle
of the field.
Speaker 1 (01:34:57):
First and ten for Sutherner at the Camas eighteen yard lines.
He took the hand off and up the left side,
found a hole but only got about roughly two yards
on the play where he is taken out of about
roughly the fifteen yard line by Alex Arosa. And then
second down coming up, Sumner's going a little bit hurry
up here too. They're going quick nine fifty six and
(01:35:18):
ticking remaining here in the fourth quarter. On second down
and seven, Donovan now sets up right back out of
the shotgun, took the snap and a three step drop
forget a play is dead and multiple flags coming out
now on this play.
Speaker 2 (01:35:34):
Yeah, the snap was delayed. There were about two or
three Sumner players moving at the time of the snap,
so I think the snap was a little bit late,
probably coming back from the center.
Speaker 1 (01:35:47):
So it's a false start coming up here for Sumner
and that will reset matters here on second down coming
up in about twelve yards to go, nine forty four
to go here in the fourth quarter, and you can
feel the air being added by a little bit of
tension between both of these sides. This game is well
(01:36:10):
far from over with Camus up twenty one seventeen looking
to add to their legacy and Sumner looking for their
first eight championship since nineteen seventy seven. Second out and twelve,
Donovan out of the shotgun formation, took the snap, fires
at left side, cut by Braylen Pope twenty fifteen yard line,
and spun right back out of bounds at about the
(01:36:31):
twelve yard line by Jared Forner and that's again of
roughly eight yards on the play. Is the third down
coming up?
Speaker 3 (01:36:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:36:38):
I like that play design. They kind of go half
roll right and then try to throw a slip or
a tunnel screen back left. Really interesting scheme worked out
pretty well for him. So now they look like they
got about third and six, so they'll spot this one
right back at the thirteen yard line. Indeed, third and
six here for Sumner in Camas territory. Donovan took the
(01:36:59):
snap across the.
Speaker 1 (01:37:00):
Middle and complete the kaka into the end zone for
a touchdown for Sumner.
Speaker 2 (01:37:05):
Yeah. Both teams are blessed with great tight ends and
Kokie gets the little seam route right there, right over
the top of the head of the linebacker, and uh,
Sumner's gonna retake this lead.
Speaker 1 (01:37:18):
Carter Coke a thirteen yard touchdown reception with nine to
twelve to go in the fourth quarter, and these two
teams slugging back and forth. It is Sumner on top,
twenty three to twenty one pen of the extra point.
What a game we got brewing here. Austin Ferentz back
to kick here for the point after it's on the
(01:37:39):
way and it is good twenty four to twenty one
in favor of Sumner, and we'll keep it right here
with nine to twelve to go in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 2 (01:37:48):
What a great game, as I fist bump you, Yeah,
this is what this is what you want right, This
is for a big school state championship game.
Speaker 1 (01:37:55):
You you said it.
Speaker 2 (01:37:56):
They're kind of trading punches here. This I'm gonna look
at here next nine minutes and twelve seconds are gonna
be really interesting.
Speaker 1 (01:38:03):
We saw a little bit of a bottleneck as far
as offensive numbers back in the first half, exceptions toal
Isaac's here, but it's really opening up now in these
last two quarters. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:38:14):
And even though theo Isaacs he got a lot of
those yards one hundred and forty yards, twenty yards whatever
it was. It by halftime they only had seven points
to show for it. But both the pass offenses have
showed up here to the second half. Camus is running
the ball a little bit better, so it's turned into
more points on the scoreboard for sure.
Speaker 1 (01:38:33):
So it is now Camus down by three and how
can they answer here with nine to twelve to go
in the fourth quarter, Forenzus kick and over ender will
dip right into the end zone. Camus is gonna let
this go and it's a touchback, so they'll get this
one right back at their own twenty yard line with
again nine to twelve to go in the fourth quarter
of the four Raced eight title game.
Speaker 2 (01:38:52):
That's a big weapon in high school football. Sumner's kicker
has put it in the end zone every kickoff of
the game. And in high school football, if even if
the receiver catches in the zone, he can't bring it out.
So every offensive drive after a kickoff, Camus doesn't get
a return.
Speaker 1 (01:39:07):
Austin Farenz known as one of the strongest legs in America.
That's a scouting report on him. So meanwhile, Camus is football.
They're down by three first and ten and the screen
passing now to the left side and that is complete
to Foreigner, but taking down to Anthony Foreigner, I should
as as well say, but a loss of what looks
like two on the play and second in about twelve
(01:39:28):
coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:39:28):
Well, Sumner, you know the guys wearing the white jerseys
are definitely flying around that that touchdown seems to have
energized their defense.
Speaker 1 (01:39:38):
So what is Jake Davidson and crew having store for
this drive. He has gone on the air twice in
this second half and down one of his favorite targets,
Chase McGee with this clock down at a thirty five
to go in the fourth quarter, a tense, tight and
packed filled, emotionally filled four A state title game. Davidson
(01:39:58):
rolling out right, fires a on the right sideline that
is complete forty forty five yard line and being pushed
out of bounce with Jack McDonald and enough to move
the chains first down here for Camus.
Speaker 2 (01:40:08):
Yeah, just roll them out away from pressure. Runs a
little stop route right on the sideline. Sumner defender misses
the tackle and he gets those additional yards up the sideline.
Speaker 1 (01:40:17):
So right out about midfield, first and ten for Camus,
coming up with eight twenty two to go in the
fourth quarter, twenty four to twenty one in favor of Sumner.
Jake McGee goneut of the air twice here in the
second half, led the state and passing yards here for
this season, and this is where you earn your stripes
for a legacy. On first and ten screen pass right
(01:40:37):
side cup by McGee forty five to the forty yard
line and swarmed by a horde of Spartans and taken
down what looks like just above the forty in a
gain of roughly seven to eight yards on the play.
Speaker 2 (01:40:50):
Yeah, and that's that's a yardage that you'd love to
get on first down. It's gonna just open the playbook
up here. On second and very short, you can run it,
can throw it. Sumner has to go vanilla here because
they don't know what you're gonna do here on a
second and one great first down.
Speaker 1 (01:41:08):
Yardage, So it will be second and about one coming
up for Camas at the Sumner forty one yard line. Again,
Camas down by three here in the fourth quarter. Davison
back out of the shotgun, fires right side that is
complete thirty yard line to the twenty five and being
(01:41:29):
wrapped up and taken down at about the twenty five
yard line Chase McGee. But also flags coming out of
the play.
Speaker 3 (01:41:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:41:35):
Flag came from about twenty five yards away. I'm pretty
impressed with that back judge's arm. Actually, he kind of
flung that thing about thirty yards. I think we're gonna
see a face mask here. But again, as long as
those Sumner defensive back those corners want to play nine
yards off those hitches are gimmes. Yeah, that's like stealing.
Speaker 1 (01:41:55):
So they'll take what they can get and we'll wait
to see where this ball is officially reset at. And
it is indeed a face mask coming up on Sumner.
So Camus a big break right here with seven twenty
five to go. Yeah, And in high school football there's
two varieties of face mask. There's incidental and then the
(01:42:17):
fifteen yard personal foul, and that was the big one.
Speaker 2 (01:42:19):
That was the fifteen yarder. And now Camus is in
business here at the twelve yard line.
Speaker 1 (01:42:25):
So first and ten coming up here for Camus was
seven to twenty five to go and ticking and trailing
here by three in the four Acet eight title game.
Davidson back out of the shotgun formation, Titan Brody low
man of the backfield. Davidson dropping back now to the twenty,
keeps to himself. Fifteen ten now to the five sprins
three of one into the end zone and it's a touchdown.
Speaker 2 (01:42:47):
Yeah, but it's gonna come back.
Speaker 1 (01:42:49):
It will, yeah. Flag on the play, and that's right
at about the twenty yard line, and it's right where
you always see holding. So it appeared to be good
for six, but it's coming right on back with the
holding penalty.
Speaker 2 (01:43:07):
And that sometimes happens, that quarterback scrambles, that lineman's engaged,
that defensive lineman tries to change directions because he sees
the quarterback on the run, and those hands get extended.
You got two fistfuls of jersey. It's an easy call
for the Empire.
Speaker 1 (01:43:21):
So while it seemed too good to be true for
Jake Davidson, it was too good to be true. So
it's gonna get pushed back now first and twenty at
the subner of twenty two yard line, and again they're
down by three, seven oh six left ear and Davidson
back out of the shotgun formation, and we've got a
stoppage of play here, and it will be a timeout
(01:43:42):
that Camas calls with seven oh six lefts. So we'll
keep it right here. And they've got two left here
in this game. Sumner's got one left already.
Speaker 2 (01:43:54):
Yeah, And timeouts are gonna be at a premium in
a game like this down the stretch. It'll be interesting
to see here what Camus calls. You know, they've got
a long distance.
Speaker 1 (01:44:06):
To go here.
Speaker 2 (01:44:06):
You don't need to get it all right, You don't
need to get it all. It's still his first down,
so you don't have to get a bunch here, but
maybe try to cut this in half.
Speaker 1 (01:44:16):
Also comes down here to what is going to be
a question of clock management here with canvas. Right now
they're okay with two timeouts, but Sumner's got just one right.
Speaker 2 (01:44:27):
And if Camus can punch the ball in here, then
that one time out becomes a big concern for sunder.
Speaker 1 (01:44:35):
The Sumner up twenty four to twenty one. We're down
to seven oh six left here in the fourth quarter
of the four A state title game, first and twenty
here for Candas after they got pushed right back on
the holding penalty ball spot right back at the twenty
two yard line. Davidson got the snap fires at right
side and that's got by McGee at about the eighteen
yard line. Pushed a little bit back, but they're gonna
(01:44:57):
down this one. It looks like right back at the
fifteen yard line and it will be about second down
and three coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:45:03):
But a great positive play coming on the heels of
that holding. You get eight yards of it back. Okay,
now you're second in about twelve again, you don't have
to get all of it right so anything in your
playbook is fair.
Speaker 1 (01:45:15):
Game six thirty six left here in the fourth quarter.
So they got a gain, but not much, your begg
your pardon. It will be second and thirteen coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:45:28):
And importantly they can get a first down without scoring, right,
so it's that is a possibility as well.
Speaker 1 (01:45:33):
So Davidson back out of the shotgun once again. Titan
Brody loan man on the backfield, took the snap play
action past Davidson fires it left side and they're gonna
call this one incomplete. McDonald says he has it, but
that's weird.
Speaker 2 (01:45:48):
We have we have the officials. We got one scene
in complete on the far sideline, and then we had
the near line judge signaling complete.
Speaker 1 (01:45:57):
The Israel neighbors took him down and we have a
little bit of confusion right now down on the field.
Speaker 2 (01:46:01):
Okay, but it looks like it's going to be incomplete
because they've brought the ball back to their fifteen.
Speaker 1 (01:46:05):
So once again, Sumner coming up with the big series
of stops and will be third and thirteen coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:46:14):
Yeah, and now you've got to dial up something and
take a shot down here to the goal line to
try to get this first down. Or get it in
the end zone.
Speaker 1 (01:46:20):
Third and thirteen for a Cavas back at the Sumner
fifteen yard line.
Speaker 2 (01:46:24):
And Camas takes the timeout.
Speaker 1 (01:46:26):
So they're down to one now here for a beggar
pardon this is going to be Sumner who calls this one.
Speaker 2 (01:46:32):
I think the official signal with the wrong way Coach
Matheson was out. It looked like, yeah, it was the
numbers calling the timeout.
Speaker 1 (01:46:39):
Yeah, so that that makes certainly more sense.
Speaker 2 (01:46:41):
And coach Mathison's easy to spot. He's got some bright
orange sneakers on. He was all the way out past
the numbers calling that time out.
Speaker 1 (01:46:47):
Which would have been even more interesting because Subner only
has one time out here for this game. Now Camus
is also down to one.
Speaker 2 (01:46:53):
Yeah, and I'm looking at the score wheard he's showing
Cavus now down to one.
Speaker 1 (01:46:55):
So we're getting down a serious clock management now. It's
got to be an important part of this one. With
six twelve to go.
Speaker 2 (01:47:00):
Yeah, both teams, most staffs, how they manage the clock
down the stretch is going to be absolutely critical here.
Speaker 1 (01:47:06):
So third and thirteen coming up for Camas at about
their own at about the Sumner fifteen yard line.
Speaker 2 (01:47:15):
Now field goal ties it. So you don't have to
score here. You could kick the field goal and tie it.
Be interested and see what coach Mattheson dials up here.
Speaker 1 (01:47:29):
Davidson back out of the shotgun formation, ball spotted back
at the Sumner fifteen yard line, tight and Brody Loan
man of the backfield. Davidson got the snap, fires that
lamps side again underthrown to Chase McGee. It's incomplete and
fourth and thirteen coming up for Camas.
Speaker 2 (01:47:46):
Yeah. Unfortunately for Camus, Davidson was getting hit there as
he was in his delivery. Ball just kind of lands
at the feet of the receiver because he couldn't get
enough on it. And it looks like Camus is gonna
run their field goal team out here and try to
tie this game up.
Speaker 1 (01:48:00):
So Jackson Tyler back on to try to not this
one up with six oh seven to go in the
fourth quarter, twenty four to twenty one in favor of Sumner,
and this one gonna be from thirty two yards. Tyler
is a lefty, high snap, got it down, kick us
(01:48:21):
on the way and it is good.
Speaker 2 (01:48:24):
Boy, that was not pretty.
Speaker 1 (01:48:25):
Just got that one over the crossbar. Twenty four twenty
four was six oh seven to go.
Speaker 2 (01:48:31):
Yeah, that was not pretty. The holder had a hard
time handling that that snap and getting the ball down
as a result through all the timing off and you're
exactly right. That ball barely crept over the crossbar, and
it looks like we have a Camas player down.
Speaker 1 (01:48:45):
Yeah, there is an injury time out here for the
attention right back at the fifteen yard line on the
Cavas side. They have tied this game up, but a
lot of their attention, it looks like right now on
Liam Wakamoto, who.
Speaker 2 (01:49:03):
I think is the holder, which would beg the question.
You know, those guys the holder are not supposed to
be contacted by the defense. He's defenseless. So I'm sure
coach Matheson's probably asking the guys wearing the stripes, you know,
how could my guy be down here hurt.
Speaker 1 (01:49:21):
And it not be a penalty five foot nine one
seventy juniors. So Wakamoto needing plenty of attention right now
after that field goal just got through with six zero
seven ago here in the fourth quarter, and this is
going to take a little bit of time right now.
So this can't sit well without of Matheson and trying
(01:49:43):
to keep this team regroup with this game is still
very much in the balance, all tied to twenty four apiece.
Speaker 2 (01:49:49):
Well, and further concerning potentially down the road is if
he's your normal holder and you get into a situation
later where you've got to kick another field goal, who
is that new holder going to be? How much they've
done it this year in practice, If he's not able
to return, I would bet money we're going to see
down there on the sideline someone practicing real quick about
how they're gonna hold worker with that kicker.
Speaker 1 (01:50:10):
Well, Jarrett Forarner is one option we're told here as
far as the Camas side as a holder for this,
So we'll see if they will need him coming up
as this one gets closer and closer to the finish line. Yeah,
so there's still attention right back toward Liam Wakamote with
a fifteen yard line, with this game all tie at
(01:50:30):
twenty four apiece and Jackson Tyler booting a thirty two
yard field goal, some are taking over in just a
little bit.
Speaker 3 (01:50:39):
Well.
Speaker 1 (01:50:39):
To be in the know about high school sports in Washington,
go straight to the source, the WYAA website get news information. Schedules,
league standing, state tournament information and more at WYAA dot com.
That is WYAA dot com. The wy AA, your source
for high school sports in Washington. So a lengthy time
(01:51:04):
out here to address the injury to Liam Wakamoto. Right
back near the fifteen yard line was six to Zho
seven a goal. Camus has just tied this game in
a thirty two yard field goal by Jackson Tyler. Just
two scores in the first half of this game. It
was Steele Isaacs on a twenty five yard touchdown run
(01:51:24):
and then Nico's Spear tying it up on a nine
yard touchdown grab. And right after that these two teams
began to air it out offensively. Sunnder got on the
board with a sixteen yard touchdown run for the second
half the Steel Isaacs and then Chase McGee back to
back touchdown grabs her courtesy Jay Davidson. And we're all
(01:51:47):
tied up down because of the field goal here to
Jackson Tyler. We've been delayed for about roughly five minutes here,
So the concern growing more and more here for Liam Wakamoto.
Speaker 2 (01:51:57):
Yeah, there's there's quite a crowd around him helping him
and assisting him at the moment, and we've got coach
Matheson having a conversation with the lead referee here in
the white hat. Well, you hate to see this in
any situation, obviously a state title game as well. Hopefully
that young man is going to be okay.
Speaker 1 (01:52:18):
If you're a Camas and you just tied this game
and you go through a lengthy delay, how do you
reset them? How do you reset yourselves now following this
kind of a delay with us getting closer and closer
here to the end of this one.
Speaker 2 (01:52:29):
Well, I think you could ask this, that's a good question.
I think you could ask the same question about the
Sumner offense. How long has it been since the Sumner
offense has been on the field. Given the fact that
Camus has just had the ball for as long as
they've had it, and now you have this extended break
with the injury, it'll be interesting to see how both
teams come out of this kind of an unplanned extended
time off and how they respond.
Speaker 1 (01:52:49):
So there was a huge pile up as that field
goal just got through. Again, we mentioned it was a
high snap, a bit of a disjointed snap that enabled
Jackson Tyler to still get away enough, but it barely
cleared the crossbar from thirty two yards out.
Speaker 2 (01:53:03):
Yeah, because he kind of had to hitch and stop,
make sure the ball got put down and then continueing.
He just did not get a lot of energy on
that kick. It barely got over the crossbar and then
there was just a pile of bodies where the holder
was and and unfortunately that's the young man they're attending to.
Speaker 1 (01:53:20):
But we're seeing right now Adam Mathison on the field
with what with what looks like Mick hoppin our guest
by the way, between the second and third quarter, and
a lathy conversation right back at the twenty five yard
line Camus's sideline. They're just trying to keep Lewis right
now at this point.
Speaker 2 (01:53:38):
Well, the young man's on his feet, he's being assisted off.
But this is a great sign that they're gonna be
able to get him off.
Speaker 1 (01:53:45):
Because the last thing you want to see is extra
medical attention also in the form of a stretcher come out.
Speaker 2 (01:53:50):
Yeah, when you when you see the gator or you
see the paramedics coming out, that's never a good sign
and we're not seeing that here. So hopefully that young
man will be okay, and and who knows, we might
see him later in the game. Hold for what might
be a game winning kick if he's able to come back.
Speaker 1 (01:54:06):
So Liam Wakamoto needing assistance, but he is alert and
helped off down to the campus sideline. So six to
oh seven and go after what was about roughly a
five minute delay plus for the injury time out. That's
settled here and it will be Sumner going back on offense.
With this game all tied at twenty four apiece, Borden
(01:54:30):
and Pyler back to receive.
Speaker 2 (01:54:33):
Sumners had a couple of really good kick returns today.
See if they could do it a third time here
and set their offense up and it with six minutes
to go. Their offense doesn't need to be in a
big hurry, right The goal is to score, but score
and not leave a lot of time for mister Davidson
in that Camus offense to come back home.
Speaker 1 (01:54:49):
Yeah, Poonan and Bordon had a couple of good run
backs here, But what you want to do is bleed
the clock here at this point if you're the Sumner Spartan,
So twenty four apiece with six oho seven to go
and Tyler boons this away end over round of the
right hash mark, and this one is taken now by
Bordon twenty running out of the right side off tackle
twenty five yard line and now being modeled about the
(01:55:09):
thirty yard line where he's taken down by Titan Brody,
and the Spartans will go right back to work here
with five fifty six to play in the fourth quarter,
all tied up a twenty four a piece.
Speaker 2 (01:55:20):
Yeah, now the Sumner offense is gonna go into what
we call a four minute offense here. They don't need
to be in a hurry. They don't need to worry
about where they're at in the play clock. The goal
here is to score and leave as little time left
as possible for Camas.
Speaker 1 (01:55:34):
So it will be first and ten coming up here
for the Spartans at the thirty one yard line with
five fifty six to go, and Donovan right back out
of the shotgun once again, Isaac's lowman of the backfield
almost fumbled a snap, and now a screen pass left
side cut by Pope thirty yard line and against left
hash marks, cutting right back to the right side, spins
off one tackle and shove right down to the ground
(01:55:56):
at about the thirty two yard line for about a
gain of roughly three yards. On the play, Zuko Lopez
was the one who knocked him down.
Speaker 2 (01:56:06):
Boy, and did he ever knock him down? I thought that.
I thought that play was gonna go big, and then
he kind of cuts it across the green back into
the middle of the field where all those Camas defenders are.
Speaker 1 (01:56:16):
So it will be second down and six coming up
here for the Spartans at their own thirty five yard
line again, all tie twenty four apiece five nineteen to go.
The handoff for Isaac's up the gut. He goes, but
gets nothing and taken right back down to the thirty
five for no gain.
Speaker 2 (01:56:30):
Yeah. Actually, I think we've got a new running back
in there.
Speaker 1 (01:56:33):
That was number fourteen that begg your pardon. Yes, that's
Israel neighbors. So it will be third and four coming
up now for the Spartans. They give them one on
the play and Donovan back under center. Isaac's back in
(01:56:57):
the game, low man on the backfield, but now Donovan
goes right at the and knocked away at about the
forty five yard line. Give credit Forner was right there.
The pass intended for Carter Kocain boy. Sumner's really lucky
that that ball wasn't intercepted. That was thrown into double
coverage and underthrown. They dodged a bullet there. It looks
like they're gonna run their punt team out here. So
(01:57:18):
three and out here for Sumner with four thirty nine
to go. And I think one of the underrated storylines
of this game Camas coming up with the right stops
at the right time.
Speaker 2 (01:57:27):
Well, that's the name of the game. You may not
be able to stop them all the time, but can
you stop them during the right times.
Speaker 1 (01:57:33):
So a lone man bout to receive this punt here
as Jared Forner on fourth and fourth for Summer back
of their own thirty seven in the fake as they
go up the middle and mean taken down right back
in the forty four yard line, that will be a
first down. Give credit. What a play And as in
on that want to look like was Steve Isaacs as well?
Speaker 2 (01:57:52):
Sorry I mean to step on your toes there. I
saw it snap to the up back. I couldn't help myself. Yeah,
you know, I I'm curious to know I steal Isaacs
wasn't in the first two plays in.
Speaker 1 (01:58:02):
The last series, but he's in there now. So the
move pays off here for Keith Ross first and ten
at the Sumner thirty seven yard line. They handoff now
for Isaac's cutting left side, and he's taken down at
about the forty one So a loss of about roughly
two yards here on the play with four to fourteen
(01:58:23):
to go on ticking, can we go back to that fake?
Speaker 2 (01:58:25):
Fine? Oh my goodness, I mean roll of the dice
taking a chance. Wow.
Speaker 1 (01:58:31):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:58:32):
They must have seen something on film in their preparation
to know that they could pull that out if they
needed it, But boy, it was there, and what a
gutsy call to call it at that point in the game,
at that place on the field.
Speaker 1 (01:58:44):
Keith Ross as well, pushing the right buttons out the
right time. So it's second down on eleven of the
forty two yard line in Sumner territory and the snap
right back to Donovan. He'll go right down the middle,
and this one is complete at about the twenty nine
yard line by kind of a gain of roughly thirty
on the play, and Sumner moves the chains in the
(01:59:05):
Camas territory and what a.
Speaker 2 (01:59:06):
Great throw under pressure he was actually being hit as
he threw that, and he threw a dime that was
right on his receiver. Sumner's in business inside the thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:59:15):
Both teams a timeout on the board still three twenty
eight to go. It's first and ten right back at
the twenty eight yard line in Camas territory. Donovan flings
it left side twenty five yard line. That is complete
to Pope and immediately wrapped up by McDonald for a
gain of roughly four yards on the play. Second down
coming up in the clock, still ticking.
Speaker 2 (01:59:35):
Boy, Donovan and Pope. They're quite a connection here that
both are putting together great games throwing the ball and
working together here three.
Speaker 1 (01:59:43):
Zero two to go and ticking again. Second down and
six coming up here for Sumner at the Camas twenty
five yard line. Donovan took the snap, fires it left
side of the twenty yard line, and that is knocked
out of the hands and incomplete of Carter.
Speaker 2 (02:00:00):
Okay, actually they're gonna say that was a fumble. Yeah,
And where the line judges marking it would beyond would
be beyond the line to gain that.
Speaker 1 (02:00:08):
Would be at about the twenty yard line, so it
technically would be a gain and more and that will
move the chain. So what did Suddner catch a break
right there?
Speaker 2 (02:00:17):
Absolutely because there were Cavas defenders that were tracking that ball.
They just could not get to it before it went
out of bound.
Speaker 1 (02:00:23):
Awfully close. So it's first and ten Sumner moving ahead,
ball right back in the Camas seventeen yard line when
Donovan out of the shotgun formation and the handoff now
up the middle of this was taken to the fifteen
yard line by Chay Molina and he gets a game
about roughly five or six yards on the play. It's
second down coming up.
Speaker 2 (02:00:44):
Sumners had a lot of success here in the last
quarter quarter and a half throwing the ball. But you
know what I like that they run the ball from
time to time to keep this Camas defense honest.
Speaker 1 (02:00:55):
So shame Molina gets a touch and helping move it.
It's about halfway to move in the chains at this
point with now two thirteen to go, so some are
doing a terrific job of winding down the clock right
now in a tie ball game to the four A
state title game. It is second down and five back
at the Camas twelve yard line. Donovan right back out
(02:01:17):
of the shotgun formation, he'll hand out to Molina trying
to find a hole up the middle of the ten
yard line, and he's swarm by a handful of paper
makers and they'll eventually call this play dead at about
roughly the eight yard line. Not enough, but they push
it a little bit more with one forty three to
go in ticking that.
Speaker 2 (02:01:35):
Had a bit of a rugby scrum feel to it.
Right there, they're probably about twenty bodies, they're all around
the football, and the pile just kind of kept inch
and forward, inch and forward, inch and forward. And now
Summers facing a third and two.
Speaker 1 (02:01:47):
So how about Sumner though, chewing off some clock right now?
Third and three? This game tied a twenty four a
piece and one twenty two to go in the four
A state title game.
Speaker 2 (02:01:57):
They've done it right. They did exactly what we described
would probably need to do. Question now is can they
punch it in the end zone.
Speaker 1 (02:02:03):
Jay Molino, lone man of the backfield, Donovan out of
the shotgun formation, takes a snap, he'll hand out to Molina,
cutting left side, bus forgive a tackle on the five
yard line and wrapped up right back in the four
good enough Gough for a first down there might have
been a fumble, and Camas says they may have had
this one as a pile of white and black jerseys
(02:02:23):
swarm right back of the four yard line as Chay Molina,
did he lose it enough for a turnover, and they
will say Sumner kept that ooh place and did they
dons a bull in fifty nine seconds left?
Speaker 2 (02:02:37):
Wow, that would have been a huge turn of events
to fumble the ball down inside the five yard line,
but somehow found a way to get that ball back.
I thought that ball came out, and sure enough he did,
and and Sumner's lucky enough to jump back on it.
Now they've got first down and goal from the four
yard line.
Speaker 1 (02:02:54):
Sumner looking for their first titles since nineteen seventy seven.
First end goal at the four Donovan a shotgun formation,
He'll hand out to Molina up the gut he goes,
and then he's wrapped up right back of the four
yard line with thirty three seconds and ticking Zuko Lopez
in on the tackle. But you talk about a Vandon
Spartan's right now, second and goal coming up.
Speaker 2 (02:03:15):
Yeah, I think you've gotta run the ball one more time.
Call that timeout. But I think you run the ball
strategically to place that ball on the field where your
kicker wants it. Right now, it's on the left hash
that's a pretty sharp angle from this distance. Maybe you
Oh no, they're gonna run it down and call the
time out.
Speaker 1 (02:03:33):
They're gonna run it down. They're gonna run him down
and bring Austin Feranz out for all the marbles.
Speaker 2 (02:03:40):
Four seconds to go. Yeah, see, I probably would have
lined up, run another play, try to get that ball
into the middle of the field, then burn the time out.
But we'll see how this works out for coach Ross.
Speaker 1 (02:03:50):
So it all comes down to this. Austin Fernz, who
blew his first two field goal tryings up this game,
nail this third as a chance to cement a legacy
and win the state championship. Here with four seconds left
on what appears to be a chip shot field goal.
Speaker 2 (02:04:09):
Yeah, I like everything about it. I just don't like
the angle. High school football, these hash marks are really wide,
much wider than like an NFL game, where they're more
down the middle of the field. So it'll be interesting
to see if you can put this ball through the
uprights from this angle.
Speaker 1 (02:04:27):
If there was ever a time that Adam Matheson is begging,
is praying for something big out of his special teams
this year. Same for Keith Ross and a chance to
cement a legacy. Austin for ends for the state championship
from twenty one yards with four seconds left timeout Cam
(02:04:49):
and one more time out here for Cam is they're
going to try to ast Ice Ferends here at this point.
Speaker 2 (02:04:54):
Yeah, good, good time out right, you can't take them
home with you. Good time out there by coach Matheson.
If you've got some kind of field goal pat block
that you've been working all year, you're going to try
to run that here. You're exactly right. Coach Matheson's hoping
for a bad snap, a wide kick, a block, something
(02:05:15):
that's going to allow this game to extend into overtime.
Speaker 1 (02:05:19):
Sumner has had to fight through fire to get here,
triple overtime, winning the Semis overt Chijauana, so they feel
like they're built for this moment.
Speaker 2 (02:05:29):
Well, they won their season opener on a field goal
in overtime.
Speaker 1 (02:05:32):
So here we go down to this for the state championship.
Austin ferens from twenty one yards for a moment that
will live forever, all tied at twenty four apiece, Sumner's
kicker out to win the gold. Snap is down, Forensis
kick is on the way, and it is God and
(02:05:54):
zero's on the clock. For the first time since nineteen seventies,
the Sumner Spartans State champions. All you had to do
(02:06:29):
for a few seconds was just listen at pandemonium. All
you had to do if you were here, is watch
the throng of white jerseys on white pants sprint one
end zone to the other end zone to celebrate a
moment they will never ever forget, one that Keith Ross
(02:06:50):
will never ever forget, and one that Sumner High will
never ever forget. They are the state champions on a
game winning twenty one yard field goal by Austin Ferranz.
They win this one, twenty seven to twenty four.
Speaker 2 (02:07:07):
Just dudes in white jerseys running around crazy, high fiving,
jumping up and body bumping each other. What a fantastic
win to a fantastic game. All these thunder fans are
on their feet, yelling and screaming, what a great atmosphere,
what a great ending.
Speaker 1 (02:07:24):
You bet in the mind of Austin Feranz that he
had to go back and Joel you mentioned what it
took to beat for a two time champion, Lake Stevens,
that thirty five yard field goal back in September, and
Foranz to think I've done it once, I can do
it again. And for a man that many tout as
(02:07:45):
one of the strongest legs in America came through in
the strongest way when the chips were all down.
Speaker 2 (02:07:51):
And let's not forget let's give him even more credit.
He got off to a rough start in this game.
He was zero for two on his first two field goals.
To met toughness to come back make a couple big
kicks in this game after those first two initial misses
and that one being the difference in the game. That
is just awesome.
Speaker 1 (02:08:10):
Keith Ross said after the triple over time win in
the semi finals when they had to get through fire
and more of it against Chijuana that his wife was
in tears and that waiting for a game like this
wasn't so much of nerves, but more so much it
was like Christmas morning for him. And did he ever
(02:08:32):
open up the biggest present of all here tonight? Yeah,
this is gonna be Christmas New Year's fourth of July.
All rolled into one right four a state title. If
I heard you correctly, business nineteen seventy seven. This community
has been rallying around this team for the last decade
or so. They're always in the hunt, They're always close,
(02:08:52):
and today they get over the hump. So they experienced
a breakthrough and for the first time as head coach
Keith Ross reaching the state title game, he will walk
away out of Husky Stadium with this group to be
remembered forever as state champions for the program's first time
since nineteen seventy seven. Delivered on the leg of Austin
(02:09:14):
Ferenz off a twenty one yard field goal. Your final
score Sumner twenty seven and Camas twenty one. We got
more to come here to wrap this one up from
Husky Stadium? Did we ever enjoy this one here with you?
What a game you're listening to? The twenty twenty four
WYAA GAZA State Football Championships present up by the Seattle
(02:09:36):
Seahawks on Sports Radio nine to fifty KJIM. For the
first time since nineteen seventy seven, the Sumner Spartans can
claim the state championship. And then it came right down
to the wire, but did we ever experience a thriller?
And what a testimony for kicker Austin Ferenz, who blew
(02:09:57):
the first two field goal tries of this game. He
comes right back nails this third and then for the
finale of it, a twenty one yardfield goal as time
expires to capture a twenty seven twenty four win for
Sumner over Camas in a state title game that many
here will never ever forget.
Speaker 2 (02:10:16):
No, no, and this is what you won in a
state title game. You want a battle, you want it close,
and we got everything that was promised with these two teams.
We got the physical toughness out of Sumner, we got
that Camas offense that ignited started putting points on the board,
and when it was all said and done, it comes
down to the leg of the kicker being tried and
(02:10:38):
true and putting it through and Sumner's going to go
home and be state champions after a pretty epic game.
Speaker 1 (02:10:44):
O caase you want to hear this one again, friends.
Tonight's exclusive radio broadcast by Sports Radio KJR will be
available by the way for download at sports radio kjr
dot com and streamed live on the iHeartRadio app. You
will never ever forget this one touched again first off
on Sumner this season, the team that was built on energy,
(02:11:05):
built on an edginess, built on defense as well, But
did they ever find the right time for their kicker
as well to get involved? First happless is all about
steel Isaacs here, But yet you give credit here to
Keith Ross to what he did to manage the last
six minutes of this game that all set up forensis heroics.
Speaker 2 (02:11:24):
Yeah, and that six minute drive was exactly what you
would have called for. It's exactly what you practice. You
want to leave that team that you're playing no time
at all. Makes the kick with Zeros on the clock.
But boy, I'll tell you what impressed me was Sumner
was their past game. In the second half, Camus does
a much better job in the box stopping the run,
(02:11:46):
kind of holding Isaac's down. But then they go to
the air and they do it well and so well
balanced on offense for Sumner tonight, and just unfortunately for
Camus to have a great year, they just come up
a little bit short. But you know, I was told
once that when these playoffs starts, there's thirty two teams,
(02:12:09):
only one's going to finish the.
Speaker 1 (02:12:10):
Season with a win, and that is the team that
is dressed right now in white jerseys, white pants, and
white helmets as well as the celebration continues right at
midfield here for Sumner, after Austin Faranz nails a game
winning twenty one yard field goal as time expires to
clinch the four A state championship in dramatic fashion, steal
Isaac's finishing thirty five carries one hundred and seventy yards
(02:12:34):
here for this game. We'll touch on their quarterback here
in a little bit, but Steel Isaacs, what a way
to go out here for the five nine senior.
Speaker 2 (02:12:41):
Yeah, yeah, this is this is that's a dream come
true to put that kind of game together. If you're
running back one hundred and seventy yards and the team
was basically put on his back the first half. I mean,
he kind of carried the Sumner team through that first half.
And when Camus had an answer for that, they made
their adjustments. Coach Ross and his staff to the air,
throwing those perimeter screen game, throwing the ball down the field,
(02:13:04):
utilizing their tied end. But what a great team win
this was for Summer.
Speaker 1 (02:13:10):
And speaking of their quarterback, what away here for Nate
Donovan here to rebound, finishing this evening eighteen attempts, eighteen
for twenty nine in is to say, in two hundred
and fifty four yards.
Speaker 2 (02:13:21):
Yeah, yeah, it's a you know, when you're gonna win
a game against a quality opponent, everyone's got to arrive.
Everybody's got to be at the top of their game.
And you know what, both teams brought it tonight. They
absolutely brought it tonight and it was an absolute joy
to be here to watch it.
Speaker 1 (02:13:42):
Camus as well. On the other hand, they've already got
a whole stable full of trophies in their case and
they're gonna be a program that is still going to
be a formidable one here for years to come under
Adam Mathison here, but it comes so close. Jake Davis said,
what does he leave with here for his legacy?
Speaker 2 (02:13:58):
Wow, I mean, geez, you know he's gonna he's thrown
for an excess of thirty five hundred yards, He's got
fifty two touchdowns. I mean, I'm sure he's got school records. Yeah,
his legacy is gonna be one of quality leadership, excellent play.
I've had the fortunate happenstance to watch him twice. He's
(02:14:18):
a class act. There's a lot for him to be
proud of.
Speaker 1 (02:14:23):
And for a game like this when you ask if
it can go right down to the wire and have
a game winning field goal to decide it and cement
a legacy and a team clinch in their first title
in decades. What a way to finish what theater we
saw here this evening.
Speaker 2 (02:14:37):
Yeah, theatre is a great, great description because we kind
of saw a little bit of everything. We saw highs
and lows, we saw swings of momentum, and it was
pretty epic.
Speaker 1 (02:14:50):
Austin Ferentz, all because of his game winning field goal
twenty one yards twenty seven to twenty four. Your final
score here this evening as Sumner takes down Camas that
will drop the curtain on Husky Stadium in the four
A state title game this evening, and so many folks
helping make this one happen, we thank them immensely. Thanks
