Speaker 1 (00:00):
Underway, looks like it's gonna be grabbed by Cameron Hyatt
immediately is Edmond's what a way takes the first possession.
DJ Carl running the points and he's dribbling over to
his right side, trying to post up Julian Gray down there.
Gray not able to get open over to Hyatt, over
to Will all Seth on the left wing. Will spins
into the key with the ball, trying to fight port

(00:21):
there and unfortunately for Will, he fell out of bounds
as he was trying to maintain possession.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Turnover to Beach.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Yeah, a little too much there. They probably had a
good option on the low block. Didn't go down to
the low block. They had a flash there in the
early post, early in that offense, and instead they got
the turnover Beach.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
With their first possession of the game, the Illinise brothers
Illani Manise brothers passing to one another. Peddy, with the
basketball being guarded by Carl, kicks it outside. Dray Morris
is gonna put up a three rams off. The iron
ball gets batted out of bounds that Morris tries to
save it, but to no avail, and it'll go over
to Edmonds wood Way. Each team with one possession forty

(00:55):
four seconds in and we are still scoreless.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Ranger Beach is starting with a basic flexop where you
get a downscreen and then you've got that flex cut
from baseline to baseline with the screener on the low block.

Speaker 4 (01:05):
Nothing doing that first possession for him, though.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Edmunds, what are we able to get through the press?
Get it into the front court. Here Grant Williams, the
lefty sophomore with the basketball for the first time all
set swings it over DJ carl open look, three bounces
off the front iron and a nice scramble job there
by william all seth to come away with the offensive
board and then's way with another chance. Williams drives in
through the lane, lays it up and in and Edmonds

(01:28):
one way on the board.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
First, will confused on the reener Beach defense right there,
no help at all and just splitting the d and
going in for the easy left handed layup.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
I think Williams was surprised. He drove in there thinking
he was gonna get one or two guys on him
and there was nobody there. Steal from Higatt trying to
break away, does not have the numbers who goes down
for a moment, nice move, goes up, gets tied up,
loses the ball, goes back up again, and they're gonna
say he was tied up long enough for a hill
of ball and then possession arrow in the favor of
Reinier Beach.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
You don't don't often see the between the legs with
one hand and then you catch it with the same hand.
I mean, that was that was a really nice move.
But it's Raider Beach basketball.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Cameron Hyatt. He is going to Dartmouth next year. Outstanding student,
wants to get into law. Dad's a lawyer and wants
to follow in his footsteps. Great true student athlete. There
wasn't able to quite get it done though, however, and
now raynerd Beach still looking to get on the board.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
We're almost two minutes into the game.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
Powers with a three, he misses it, rebound comes down
into the hands of Grant Williams Fridman's wood Way.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Always hard to get used to these rims, even if
you play here three Knights in a row. Still, the
depth perception, especially down at that end where there's no where,
there's no curtain. It's just really hard to start games
out trying to hit threes. You kind of want to
start inside then work your way out, a little.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Bit of an adjustment each and every night.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
As the ball was knocked out of bounds, Edmond's Woodway
still holding onto the basketball. They are going from our
left to our right, towards the curtain. We're on the
west basketball court. Hyatt goes up hard. Two defenders can't
get it to go. Julian Gray tries to come down
with it. The ball looks like it was knocked off.
I thought it was knocked off of him, but I
think they're gonna say Beach touched it last. So the

(03:04):
Warrior's still holding onto the ball. Five forty four to go,
first quarter, Edmonds went away where the early twos are
a lead.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Edmonds Woodway crashing the offensive glass a little harder than
Rainer Beach. But we've got a time out taken before
a violation in the inbound there.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
And do we get a thirty or sixty on this one?
Thirty thirty, So we will keep it right here. Rainier Beach,
we talked about it. Ninety nine points to get going
right now. Zero points here through two minutes and sixteen seconds.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Yeah, not a lot of attack.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
There's been a lot more attack on the Edmonds Woodway
side now. It hasn't always worked for them. They had
a couple of turnovers, but at least they're trying to
go downhill on Rainer Beach's defense. Raider Beach is kind
of just passing around the outside and settling for jump
shots right now.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
And they we saw last night they can turn it
on quick at times, and they certainly are no stranger
to that.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
By the way.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Jalen Petty, I guess I missed it when it happened
back in early January. He had a game against Nathan
Hill sixty one points, fifteen rebounds and fifteen steals, so
he could certainly get going. Three second to go on
the shot clock. Hyatt floating from twelve feet out and
misses it. Ball comes down into the hands of Powers.
He pushes quickly down on the other end, kicks it
into the corner. Petty swings it from right to left,

(04:10):
the three ball up on the side.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
It's good.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
That's the attack and then the ball reversal for the
three point earl we were talking about.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
That was pretty right there.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Dray Morris draining the three from the left corner three
to two lead for Rainier Beach. Here with five pin
fifteen to go. In the first little.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
One two to two three quarter court trap here by
Rainer Beats broken nicely by Edmonds.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
A nice job by t w to get the ball up.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Julian Gray up on top, sends it over to will
All Set in the corner. All Set with a nice
spin move, but goes to the ground and they're going
to say he traveled.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
That's the second spin move by all Sets and that
has resulted in a traveling violation.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
He's ended up on the ground a few times already. Yeah,
Tyler Gevin over there, we're in the purple shirt. He's
an intense coach too. And I'll tell you what if
you get to know Tyler outside of basketball, nothing like
his persona on a basketball court.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
So he's already up there. Powers with a long three.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
He hits it back to back three's for Rainier Beach
and they jump out to a six to two lead.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Now with four forty to go.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
Caden Power is averaging eighteen points a game so far
in the tournament. Done a fantastictastic job both inside and outside.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
That one wasn't really in rhythm, but knocked it down anyway.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Yeah, he's just a smooth ballplayer. Hyatt kicks it down
low to all Seth. All Sith puts up a shot
and misses it, but gets fould on the play and
after what three minutes and thirty one seconds in our
first foul of the game, and it's going to go on.
Caden Powers for Rainier Beach. All Seth, by the way,
a member of the EDMONNDS Woodway baseball team that took
third and state last year. Really good baseball player. In fact,

(05:40):
there's a handful of guys on this Edmonds Woodway team.
You've got dra Simonson, Declan Crawford, Luke Boland, all baseball players,
all playing for Dan Simo's up there. That's a sport
that they are used to doing very well. And basketball
a little bit of a surprise hit the first free throw,
misses the second, and coming away with it is Petty.
Here come the Vikings one more time. Power slipping a

(06:03):
little bit there, but is able to pass the ball
off to Petty.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Four nineteen to go here.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
In the first quarter, Beach up six to three, long
three for Powers, gets off the front iron pops up
into the air. Cameron Hyatt grabs it, sends it the
other way for Mary's Edmonds Woodway. Petty with a steal
right as Hyatt was trying to go in towards the basket.
Petty waste no time, goes down to the other end.
Tough shot top twelve foot right along the left baseline.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
He gets it to go. It's an eight to three
ball game.

Speaker 4 (06:31):
That was a D one college level jumper right there from.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
A future D one player. So eight to three beach
on a little bit of a roll right now. DJ
Carl with the ball kicks it over to all Sets
dribbling in goes to the ground for the third time.
All Set's gonna need a It's gonna need a little
extra therapy after the game, their physical therapy. He is
getting banged up, banged up in bruise. They're gonna call

(06:55):
a foul on the play. It's gonna go.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
He already has a big wrap on his left frist.
He needs some pads and elbow pads to go with that.

Speaker 4 (07:01):
The way he's played here in the first quarter.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
He hasn't landed on the wrist as much as his
stomach in his face almost a few times as All
Set with the ball once again, shakes it out to
Williams between the legs, throws it over there. That's number
twenty three DJ Carl with the basketball. Carl kicks it
into the corner back to Williams, tries to pass it
underneath the Carl gets batted away. Here comes beach on
the other end. Lloyd Penny goes up, tries to throw

(07:25):
it down, gets hacked as he goes to the ground.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
He's gonna go to the free throw line for two.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Yeah, a little sloppy on the Edmonds Woodway offense right now.
I do like the attack, but you got attack when
it's there. And right now it seems like both you're
all set and hyde are kind of putting their head
down and.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Just attacking when there's three guys in the middle waiting
for him. Another time out, another thirty second time out.
Call here, so we'll keep it right here. Ten to
three score, And this was what you were worried about.
If you're Edmonds Woodway again, they're used to falling behind,
but falling behind the rain your beach is a little
bit different than falling behind to some of the teams
you might be playing up in the north end from
time to time, So it really is gonna be a
matter of what kind of a justice does giving make.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
Right now, well, Raider Beach has really only had one
good offensive rhythm shot. Now if the other two were
just D one players making D one shots right, Powers
with a guy in his face from three point range,
Patty with a super super difficult fifteen footer on the baseline.

Speaker 4 (08:17):
I mean, those shots are just ones that normally.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
Don't go down, and I think you'll live with those
if you're Tyler Geving. What you don't want is the
other three that they got, which was a ball you know,
ball penetration and then the kick to the wide open shooter, and.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
Which you don't want to live with his three points
every four and a half minutes. He's right, which is
where they are right now, trying to get it going here,
kick into the corner of Williams, puts up the three ball,
rims in and bounces out, hit both sides of the
rim and then hit the backboard, tried to come back
down through, but then falls back down to the hardwood,
and Beach pushing to the other side already again, not
wasting any time getting back into their half court set

(08:52):
Powers over on the right wing being guarded by Williams
down low back to Powers. He puts up along two misses.
It comes down into the hands of Cameron Hyatts.

Speaker 4 (09:02):
Great box out there by DJ Carl.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
And will All Seth goes hard to the hoop, but
he can't get it to fall. Nice job on defense
there by Kayden Powers and then DJ Carl on the
other end knocks the ball out of bounds. So it'll
be Rainier Beach basketball twenty six to go on the
shot clock, tow forty one to go on the game
clock here, and we get our first substitution for Rainier Beach.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
I L.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
Robinson who goes by Rico might know that Robinson name. Yes, indeed,
Nate's kid out there. And by the way, good I
guess I didn't see him personally, but saw pictures posted.
Nate was here in the building the other day.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
So he's been through a lot of health issues. It
sounds like he's getting a lot better.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
Love to hear that and love to see that he's
back up on his feeding and so we wish him
all the best. Thirteen to go on the shot clock.
Petty left Side's gonna put up a tough three with
a hand right in his face, can't get it to fall.
Hyatt grabs the rebound. He's wasting no time. He's pushing
to the other end. He's gonna try to take it
all the way himself and does. That's a big time
player right there.

Speaker 4 (10:01):
It really is.

Speaker 3 (10:02):
At that time, he was patient. Why he didn't just
put his head down and drive into traffic. He hesitated,
saw his lane and then attacked it.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
Incredibly cerebral players. If we've come to see you over
throughout the senior year, said there's a reason why he's
a four point zero student going to Dartmouth and shows
it on the court as well. Petty now with the
basketball up on top ten to go on the shot clock,
swings the ball over to the left side. Dra Morris
with the basketball kicks it back out to Powers Powers

(10:29):
double team puts up a sixteen foot runner gets it
the fall.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
What can you do about that defense?

Speaker 3 (10:33):
That's great defensive Again, that's a shot you will live
with ever, Tyler Gebvick.

Speaker 4 (10:36):
If Raider Beach makes those shots all night, you're not
gonna beat there.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Nothing you can do. Sometimes you just tip your cap.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Hyatt with the basketball throws it from right to left,
swinging it back around Carl, then back to all set.
Now back to DJ Carl and they're going to set
it back up here on top with twelve to go
on the shot clock, guarded one on one by Petty
comes on over to the right side. Hyatt being double
team along the baseline, try to throw it from baseline
to baseline and ended up hitting the bottom of the backboard.

(11:06):
There it's gonna go to bunds and it's gonna be
beach basketball.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
So now we're seeing the game plan. They're not gonna
double high it up top, but as soon as he
gets it on the block, they're gonna bring extra bodies
out of him and force them out of his hands.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
Kind of knew at some point here tonight we would
see a lot of double teaming on number five, and
sure enough, thinking being if you can take him off
of his game, try to make the others beat you.
Fall over under the right side powers dribbling baseline, he
gets double team, throws it from right to left along
the baseline Petty.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
With a long three in the corner. Here he hits it.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
There is no conscience, and why should he have a
conscience when he's knocking.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
Those things down like that, absolutely their largest lead of
the night. It's fifteen to five here with forty five
to going here in the corner. DJ Carl drives into
the lane, kicks it out.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
Three ball in the corner. Julian greg gets into the
scoring a big villa.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
Excellent job by Carl. They're drawing the defense and kicking
it to a wide open shoot. A beautiful rotation on
that three ball.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
Seven one second difference between the game clock and the
shot clock. Fifteen eight. Score Powers dribbling over to the right,
tries to throw down low and does so. Marquise Billy
Macnise catches the pass, lays it up and in at
seventeen eight, his first two points of the game. Down
to ten, shot clock is off. Edmunds what away trailing

(12:21):
by nine? Barrel up on top looking for a screen
from Hyatt.

Speaker 4 (12:25):
Big possession here for Edmonds to get a shot.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
All sets for the head six and they got it.

Speaker 1 (12:30):
That's exactly what they needed to get back into this game.
And we are through one quarter of play, seventeen eleven,
Rainier Beach leading Edmunds, what way you're listening to the
twenty twenty five WIAA. Heis a credit Union State Basketball
Championships on Sports Radio nine fifteen KJAR.

Speaker 5 (12:47):
How do you define strength? Is it physical? Hard or
is it mental? Maybe it's both. Maybe it's whatever.

and more confident your children can be. Encourage them to
participate in a sport when they go to high school.

Speaker 7 (13:10):
This message presented by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and
the Washington State Secondary Athletic Administrators Association.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
Hey, Dick fan here, Well, every day hasn't been sunshine
and rainbows this winter. We've had pretty awesome weather, allowing
me and my son to get out and enjoy some
of the best golf courses in the Northwest, and do
it at a very reasonable price, thanks of course, to
the Around the Sound Golf Pass, which gets you twelve
rounds of golf at Whitehorse, McCormick Woods, Cedars of dungeons.

Speaker 4 (13:36):
Port, Ludlow, Avalon and more for just two seventy nine.

Speaker 3 (13:39):
But hurry, there aren't many passes left, and when they're gone,
they're gone.

Speaker 4 (13:43):
Spring is almost here.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
Spend it on the links head to seattlegolfpass dot com today.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
And we're through one quarter of action here at the Chacomadom,
the Rainier each Vikings leading the Edmonds win Away Warriors
seventeen to eleven. Here at the twenty twenty five w
iaake set Credit Union State Basketball Championships, Edmunds win Way
on a nice little six to two run to close
out the quarter with a couple of threes, and they
throw the ball into the key and they're gonna get.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
Foul ten seconds into the quarter here.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
You know, strange as it sounds, if I'm Tyler Givian,
I kind of like the fact that Rayner Beach hit
some really, really tough shots in the first quarter, because
just by nature, you hit those tough shots and.

Speaker 4 (14:28):
You think you can hit them the whole game, but
you really can't.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
By the way, that foul was called Number twelve micah
Illi Manise.

Speaker 1 (14:37):
Hyatt twelve foot floater rolls around the rim and drops through.

Speaker 3 (14:41):
Beautiful touch on now on a power power dribble with
the left hand straight up with beautiful rotation.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
And what was once a ten point lead for Beach
is now down to four.

Speaker 1 (14:51):
Three ball missed by Petty in the right corner, rebounded
by all set trying to kick it up the floor
to Julian Gray throws it over to will all Set.

Speaker 3 (14:59):
That's exactly what I'm talking about. I was a double
clutch three by Petty. The only reason he took is
because he's hit like three over.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
Knew he was gonna miss. Eventually he shows that he's human.
Thirteen to go here on the sock like Edmonds Woodway
has trailed by as many as ten. They're down by four,
it might be less than that. Reball up and in
Grant Williams hits the three. It is a seventeen to
sixteen game. Edmunds Woodway on an eleven to two run.

Speaker 4 (15:24):
This is not a fluke. This is gonna be a game.

Speaker 1 (15:27):
And the Edmunds wood Way faithful right behind us here
getting into it. They're excited. Penny with a three, he
misses it. Edmonds wood Way with a rebound, Warriors with
a chance to take the lead three on three, Julian
Gray trails. They throw it out to him all seth
in the right corner. He's pushing on the other side.
Rico Robinson with a three ball up and in.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
They didn't do a good job picking up Robinson there.
He actually had walked into a three there. You can't
let a guy walk into a wide open three twenty.

Speaker 1 (15:54):
Sixteen lead for ring your beach cam high it back
into the lane and they're gonna call him for the
offensive charges. Micah Illimnisse stands his ground, takes the contact
and draws the charge.

Speaker 3 (16:06):
So even these two possessions in a row, defensively has
done a really nice job one with a great rebound,
and they're taking a charge.

Speaker 4 (16:12):
So he's he's not scoring. He doesn't need to score.
He needs to do all the other little things which
he's doing right now.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
And fortunately, if you're Edmunds win Away fan, not such
a bad thing in the sense that that is the
first fello in the height. We've seen him throughout the
tournament and even in the district play get in foul
trouble from time to time. Not the case here as
of now, five point fifty five to go in the half,
beach up by four, looking for.

Speaker 2 (16:33):
More another three ball from Rico.

Speaker 1 (16:35):
He misses this one, tipped a round in all Sip
comes down with a defensive rebound and then so what
Away looking to set it up. On the other end,
Hyatt taking two guys, Spince throws it out of bounds,
open to get a fowl. They're gonna say, no foul.
They're just gonna call it out of bounds. Hyatt throws
his hands up into the air, but he's not gonna
get the call.

Speaker 4 (16:55):
No, that's a good call there. He really didn't have
any place to go.

Speaker 8 (16:57):
He did not.

Speaker 1 (16:58):
I think he was just looking for contact. The beach
guys were smart enough to recognize that what are you
gonna do? Go for it and nothing happening. There's for
a quick moment there there getting some of the sweat
off the ground over there.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
You just need that little pull up that he had
a couple of possessions ago. Where you know, you go
into traffic, it closes on you. Just hit that little
pull up. He's got a lot of a lot in
his bag of tricks.

Speaker 8 (17:18):
Man.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
Nice job by the officials so far.

Speaker 1 (17:20):
Alex Boss, Jeremy Matthew and Damon Taggart are your main
officials here tonight, five twenty one to go, second quarter.
Robinson fake the shot and look down below, and he
saw the streaking micah illimanise beautiful pass, easy layup.

Speaker 2 (17:35):
Illimanise with his first bucket of the game. It's twenty
two to sixteen.

Speaker 4 (17:37):
E Robinson, nice tandem here in the second.

Speaker 2 (17:40):
Quarter, Dad Robinson a spark plug off the bench there, Edmunds,
what way?

Speaker 1 (17:45):
Who had a chance? Just a few possessions, gonna take
the lead. They're not down by six, they.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
Could be worse.

Speaker 1 (17:49):
Illimanise with a steal, goes up, All said, hammers him,
He goes to the ground, doesn't make the basket, but
he's gonna go to the line for two free throws.

Speaker 3 (17:56):
Now, good foul by all seth good hustle getting back,
make him earn it. That was gonna be a that
was gonna be a throatout if he doesn't hustle.

Speaker 4 (18:03):
And get back.

Speaker 1 (18:03):
He was definitely thinking about it. And we do have
a full time out here. Four fifty six to go
in the second quarter. Ringer Beach twenty two, Edmunds one
way sixteen. You're listening to the twenty twenty five WIAA
GISA Credit Union State Basketball Championships on Sports Radio nine
fifty KJR.

Speaker 11 (18:54):
But pow number me man Ooh, that's a lot of

Speaker 2 (19:23):
And welcome back once again too the Tacoma Dome. It's
the twenty twenty five Hardwood Classic, the three A Boys
title Game.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
Steve Willet's along with Dick Faine, rain your beach on
a bit of a run here right now, and the
first of two three throws for micah Illimanisse is up
and in extends Beach's lead to twenty three sixteen. Beach
now on a six to nothing run and make it. Nope,
don't make it a seven nothing running You missed the
second shot. Cameron Hya gets the rebound, and here come
the Warriors once again. Almost halfway through the second quarter,

(19:54):
TJ Carl looking for a screen from William Alset, doesn't
get it. Finally passes off to all Set, being guarded
very closely. Oh, good faith, nice job. All Set goes up,
puts it up and in he gets the bucket.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
Twenty three eighteen.

Speaker 3 (20:07):
Great fake in a pass to the corner, got the
defense to bite, gave him a wide open six footer.

Speaker 1 (20:13):
Macio rivers into the game right now, playing defense for
Rainder Beach a moment ago, checking in for the first
time today. Robinson passes over to Peeddy. The long three
barely catches the front iron bounces off. Micah Illiman. Manise
comes away when the board tries to kick it out
to a teammate, but the ball got away from him
and floats out of bounds.

Speaker 2 (20:33):
Edmonds wood away basketball.

Speaker 4 (20:35):
See if Edmunds Woodway can build on this.

Speaker 3 (20:38):
Couple of stops, couple of buckets in a row, get
their all possession deficit and.

Speaker 1 (20:43):
Down to five. Right now is the deficit and make
it three. There we go Cameron Hyatt twelve feet out
ball try to pop out of the cylinder for a
brief moment, then then fell back in. Hyatt with six
points and it's now a three point game again.

Speaker 4 (20:56):
Got such a high soft release.

Speaker 2 (21:00):
It's kind of a nice little shooter's touch.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
Even when you don't get the switch, it still finds
its way in through the basket. Down to twelve on
the shot clock. As Robinson has it out on the
top looking down the beautiful pass to Petty, he lays
it up and end last.

Speaker 4 (21:13):
Great execution right there.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
They've been hitting the three pointers, so the defense is
really coming out in that back door cut.

Speaker 4 (21:18):
Now is wide open.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
Peddy with a game high nine points and your beach
back out to a five point lead once again. We
reach twenty five to god. Draan Morris, one of the
starters for the Vikings, waiting to check back in. Pass
goes down low. There's a lot of contact and what
are they gonna say out of bounds?

Speaker 4 (21:34):
Yeah, airmailed to pass inside the hyatt.

Speaker 2 (21:37):
That tough pass there. It can't quite come down with it.

Speaker 1 (21:41):
And we just mentioned Macio Rivers getting a quick chance
to check in, and now he's checked back out. As
in fact, Morris does come back into the ballgame, Robinson
bringing it up slowly as they set up their half
court offense and trying to look in and Power's trying
to throw it to Robinson. He wasn't looking, goes off
his back. We'll all set on the other end, goes up,
gets fouled, almost makes the basket rims out and I'll

(22:03):
head to the line for two.

Speaker 4 (22:05):
A nice shot by all Set there.

Speaker 3 (22:06):
Sometimes kids will just want to go as fast as
they can into the basket and not have a clean look.

Speaker 4 (22:12):
He slowed down just a little bit enough.

Speaker 3 (22:14):
To get the contact, make sure he got the foul,
gathered himself, almost got the three point play.

Speaker 1 (22:19):
Very close on that play. That was Caden Powers who
picked up his second foul, So we'll keep an eye
on that. All set misses the first free throw a
tep Edmonds one way. As a team, shooting sixty four
percent from the free throw line this season hasn't necessarily
been a strength did play a huge factor in their
victory over BELvue last week in the opening round game
that went into overtime. I think Hyauta was fourteen for

(22:41):
fifteen in that game. From the free throw line out
ball misses as well, so all set missing two crucial
free throws. We're now under three minutes to go here
in the half, beat up by five, looking for more.
Robinson right side, kicks it back out on top. That's
Morris dribble drive spins, kicks it back out to Robinson.
Twelfth to go on the shot clock being guarded one

(23:04):
on one that is Dray Simonson in the game.

Speaker 2 (23:06):
Shot goes up by Robinson, rims off, picked up by Hyatt.
Here come the Warriors once again.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
All seth picking up a pass from Hyatt, gets double
teamed along the baseline, kicks it out Dray Simonson kicks
it to DJ Carl open look three heads six.

Speaker 3 (23:25):
Nice job by Simonson not forcing getting the ball to
his wide open teammate for the rhythm three twenty.

Speaker 1 (23:31):
Five twenty three score. We got our sofs the ball game.
Two fourteen to go in the half. Robinson looks across
the floor as he's getting direction from the bench they
are going away from their bench right now, so he
had to stop play for a moment. There, tend to
go on the shot clock, pull up from Penny.

Speaker 2 (23:47):
Of course he hits it.

Speaker 3 (23:48):
He's got a tough one now another top one that
was that was a nice elevation, got himself some space,
knocked it down.

Speaker 2 (23:55):
Twenty seven to twenty three, score one fifty to go.
First half.

Speaker 1 (24:00):
Simonson with a ball, dribbles it over towards the left,
throws it over to all Seth gets it to DJ Carl,
back to Julian Gray. They've got ten on the shot clock.
Ray trying to find a cutter in the middle, couldn't
do it, holds onto the ball.

Speaker 2 (24:14):
Finally the ball.

Speaker 1 (24:15):
The Simonson double team throws up a shot along the baseline,
hits the side of the backboard, rebound for Rainier Beach
and they waste no time on the other end. Petty
Tomorris underneath the Ilimanie see miss is it?

Speaker 4 (24:27):
There were too many Rainier Beach packings under their own basket.

Speaker 2 (24:30):
A lot of touches, no points. DJ Carl going coast
to coast, Edmunds one way back within two.

Speaker 4 (24:36):
Hugh Edmonds wood Way crowd behind us love and that hustle.

Speaker 2 (24:40):
Yeah, they had.

Speaker 1 (24:40):
They had to get directions to the dome. They're not
used to being here, and they have shown up tonight.
The girls team was here about seven or eight years ago.
The boys haven't been here for seventeen. Check out into
the corner, Eli Manise. That would be Marquise number twenty four,
showing that he can get it done as well. He's
got five on the game. Now, I'm thirty to twenty
five throw RB. We're down to forty five seconds to go.

Speaker 4 (25:04):
Big.

Speaker 3 (25:04):
Last forty seconds here eat a bucket and a stop
and an opportunity for another bucket.

Speaker 4 (25:09):
If you're Edmonds, one way you can get a two
for one.

Speaker 1 (25:12):
Simonson trying to go iso there, gets a screen, finally
kicks it back out to Carl. We're down to nine
on the shot clock, thirty on the game. Flock Hie
it into the lane, floats one up from fourteen feet,
misses it rebound.

Speaker 2 (25:23):
Marquise Ilimanise Rainier beach back on the other end.

Speaker 1 (25:28):
As you want to play for one here, they're gonna
hold it, yep, play for one. Shot clock is off
sixteen to go. Petty up on top, all set standing
about ten feet away from him, halfway between the three
point line and half court.

Speaker 2 (25:39):
Petty finally gets a run, pulls up from behind the
three point line. Miss is it?

Speaker 1 (25:43):
Marquise Ilimanise does it again, puts it up and then
the steal by Robinson and he goes for the lamp
and gets foul with a half a second to go,
rain your beach, trying to put up four points here
within about a five second span. They now got a
seven point lead, and Rico Robinson's gonna go to the
line to shoot two with zero.

Speaker 2 (26:03):
Point five left on the clock.

Speaker 4 (26:04):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (26:05):
Edmunds wood Way had the ball down five, got the miss,
and the worst case scenario, you're you should be down
seven at halftime, and now you could be down.

Speaker 1 (26:14):
Nine and this is not the team you want to
do that against. Right, and no, Robinson misses the free throw.
Can you come into this game you know that you
have to take advantage of every situation you get. Edmonds
wad Way putting themselves in a bad spot there, Robinson
with the second pre throw, you missed them ball, Oh
they got bailed out, got bailed out.

Speaker 2 (26:33):
Ball comes down.

Speaker 1 (26:34):
Julian grayt throws it from one into the other and
leaves it short and we are at halftime.

Speaker 2 (26:38):
This has been an entertaining game.

Speaker 1 (26:40):
Rainier Beach trying to win yet another state title, trying
to win their first title in nine years. They're leading
Edmonds one way at the half, score thirty two to
twenty five. We'll take a break right now. When we
come back, we'll get to some of the halftime numbers
and get you ready to go for the second half.

Speaker 2 (28:57):
And Welcome back once again to the Tacoma Dome. Here
at the twenty twenty five.

Speaker 1 (29:01):
Hardwood Classic, brought to you by GISA Credit Union. It's
the State Basketball Championships game number two out of four
today and Rainier Beach with a thirty two to twenty
five lead in the three A Boys Championship game. Steve
Willets along with Dick Fane and Dick won an entertaining
first half. A couple of times it looked like Rainier
Beach might try to pull away, Edmonds Woodway reels them

(29:21):
back in just a little bit of back and forth
action going for the first sixteen minutes it is.

Speaker 3 (29:25):
And you know you're getting everything you'd want from hightt
if you're Edmonds Woodway, but you're also giving the complimentary
pieces to play well too. The problem with Edmunds wood
Way is they go through two or three minutes of sloppiness.
They had two or three minutes in the first quarter
led to a run by Rainier Beach. They had two
or three minutes in the second quarter we led to
a run by Raider Beach.

Speaker 4 (29:44):
The other what thirteen minutes of the game?

Speaker 3 (29:48):
Ten minutes, ten to thirteen minutes of the game have
been absolutely I think an Edmunds Woodway game, I think
Edmunds Woodway has probably outplayed Rainier Beats for.

Speaker 4 (29:57):
About ten of those sixteen minutes.

Speaker 3 (29:59):
A Rainier Beach is so explosive and can put up
ten points in the span of two minutes.

Speaker 1 (30:04):
And it doesn't hurt we you have number eleven out,
they're playing for it to Jalen Petty. Eleven points in
the first half, four for seven from two point range,
one for four from three, kind of almost a quiet
eleven if you will, which sounds a little bit crazy,
but he just a magnificent ballplayer, and players like that,
they live for the spotlight, they live for big games,
and he's on the biggest stage you can play in
high school.

Speaker 3 (30:24):
Yeah, when he creates his own shot, he does a
nice job and they go in at a higher percentage.
I don't think he's always going to be able to
knock down the ones with guys in his face for
the rest of the game. And so if he just
makes that one dribble move, maybe step back a pull up,
those are his rhythm shots.

Speaker 4 (30:39):
They're not most people's rhythm shots.

Speaker 3 (30:40):
Most people's rhythm shots have to get a pass in
their shot pocket while they're wide open knocking down.

Speaker 4 (30:45):
He can get himself in rhythm off the dribble. That's
what makes him so special.

Speaker 1 (30:49):
And I'll tell you what one name that we weren't
calling a lot early on, but certainly over the last
couple of minutes, Marcus Cilli Manisse. I mean we were
mentioning his brother more than we were mentioning him for
the first part of the game. And number twenty four
kind of came alive there in the.

Speaker 3 (31:01):
Final last seven points, three rebounds and assists, playing some
good defense as well, and Mike Manthanda's got some He's
gotten some good minutes out of a couple of those guys.
You know that that you don't normally think of when
you think of Rainger Beach basketball. Nil Robinson has done a.

Speaker 4 (31:14):
Really nice job. Boy, you could have knocked.

Speaker 3 (31:16):
Down those last two free throws and that would have
been a really been a stamp on this first half.

Speaker 4 (31:21):
But right now Edmonds woodway down seven. Still still very
much in this basketball yet.

Speaker 2 (31:25):
Very exciting by the way. A couple of other games
that were played earlier today. In three A boys the.

Speaker 1 (31:30):
Third place game, it was the Garfield Bulldogs who played
tough against three year Beach last night. They take the
third place trophy, defeating mounts Bocan by a score of
forty seven to thirty seven. And then in the fourth
place game, it was Seattle Prep with a sixty four
to fifty eight victory over Bellerman Premp. So you got
Beach playing right now. Garfield takes the third place trophy,

(31:52):
Seattle Prep taking the fourth place trophy.

Speaker 3 (31:54):
It's metro. What do we it's metro? What do we
expact on the boys and the girl's side, No question
about it. And you are you know a lot of
people don't like the consolation games. I do like the
consolation games. It just it's all about a mentality, right,
And I think the teams that come into the state tournament,
for example, Mount Let's take Mountside for examp. Right, Mountside
comes into the state tournament every year with one goal,

(32:14):
and that's to win the state championship. So when they
get bounced out of the opportunity to win a state championship,
it's really tough.

Speaker 4 (32:21):
To get your guys back up. So right, and like
a team like Mountside, they.

Speaker 3 (32:24):
Got rolled in the consolation game, should they have gotten
a roll of the first not they were probably a
better team, right, But that that's a mentality when you
have other teams, like like teams that I've coached, Let's
face it, we haven't really walked in here thinking that
we were gonna win a state championship.

Speaker 4 (32:38):
So a trophy is really really important.

Speaker 3 (32:42):
So you know, even though it's let's say you win
the first game, lose the second, you know, hey, there's
still a goal out there.

Speaker 4 (32:49):
So there's a lot of teams that come in here
just o'tly for that trophy.

Speaker 3 (32:52):
And sometimes you see those teams play the best on Saturday,
even though you know, even if it's even.

Speaker 4 (32:57):
If it's a fifth place, eight place, fourth place, seven
point and.

Speaker 1 (33:00):
Some of the biggest smiles I've ever seen in the
Tacomadome have come on Saturday mornings eight am start time,
and yet at the end of the game, they're holding
up a trophy that says fourth place. That's right, third place. Absolutely,
it means something to a lot of those players and
coaches out.

Speaker 3 (33:13):
The one thing I do not understand why, and they've
done this forever, why do they take the second place
trophy picture.

Speaker 1 (33:20):
We were talking about that, Well, we saw that with
the Lakeside girls, and you can see right before everybody
says say cheese, the girls have to kind of wipe
the frowns away and try to smile really quickly.

Speaker 2 (33:30):
We see it on the boy side all the time too.

Speaker 4 (33:32):
It's brutal. It's just like I think, you just take
him before the game and just say, hey, this is
the tonight.

Speaker 3 (33:39):
You will love having this trophy in the future, but
tonight you don't want it, so just hold it, smile,
get the trophy back, and hope you never get it.

Speaker 2 (33:47):
It's not the worst idea. Maybe we're onto something. Ey,
We're gonna take a break right now.

Speaker 1 (33:52):
When we come back, we'll talk a little bit about
what's coming up here tonight, because This is not the
final game that's been played. Four A Girls and Boys
championships coming up after this one, but right now, we
got sixteen more minutes to player, so we'll take a
break right now the sport halftime of the three eight
boys State Championship game, Rainier Beach thirty two, Edmonds, One

Speaker 9 (34:34):

Yeah, their prices were about the same.

And welcome back once again to the Hardwood Classic here
as at Tacomadome twenty twenty five WIAA Geeser Credit Union
Basketball State Championships, Ring your Beach Leading Edmonds, What Way
thirty two, twenty five At the half of the boys
three A game coming up next? It's the girls score
A followed by the girls score or the Voice score
A title game. Dick Fine will be on the call

(35:42):
for both of those games. Pre let's talk about the
girls game first. What are we expecting coming up at
seven o'clock.

Speaker 3 (35:47):
Well, we've got a rematch of a game that took
place just a week ago, a first round of state
matchup between Summer and Davis.

Speaker 4 (35:53):
Summer beat Davis sixty seven to sixty two.

Speaker 3 (35:55):
Now that was a seeding game and you have to think, well,
how how does the team lose the first round of
and be able to make it the championship. It was
just a seeding game, so Summer ended up winning that.
Sumner got the automatic berth of the in the quarterfinals.
And you know, both these teams like Edmond wood Edmonds
Woodway trailing night last night, Sumner trailed by six in
the fourth quarter against Woodenville, who beat them in the

(36:16):
twenty twenty two title game. It's Summers are making their
third final, fourth trip in four years, but they don't
they don't have a title. Taking on to Davis team
that's the number one seed and you know, the first
state title game in program history for them, and you
know a couple of stars. Olivia Collins for Sumner had
twenty five points on nine of twenty last night, including
three of six from from three point range. Neva Parris

(36:37):
had nineteen for Davis along with Cheyenne Hall had sixteen
for excuse me eighteen and five assists on.

Speaker 4 (36:43):
Seven to twelve. So we should have a really good
close matchup like we did.

Speaker 1 (36:47):
A week ago between those two And speaking of one
versus eight and two teams have played each other a
week ago.

Speaker 3 (36:52):
Same thing on the boys end, Yeah, the same thing
on the boys in and I think I think getting
into the to the state championship. On the boys' side
is all always just absolutely it's so difficult on the
boys side because you have I was just talking to
our boss Ritore about this last week.

Speaker 4 (37:08):
He said, all these teams.

Speaker 3 (37:10):
Are just reloading, and when you reload, you have two
or three years to try to get a title. Moutsize
dominated for so long. Now mouthsize out and now all
of a sudden, everybody's raised to the top and who
wants to win it? And they've and there's two teams
in kew allub and Gonzaga Prep that have opportunities to
do that.

Speaker 4 (37:28):
Pe All up the eight seed twenty three and seven.

Speaker 3 (37:30):
Drew jones Is their star, had thirty three points in
the quarterfinals, and then Gonzaga Prepp had a very impressive
win over Auburn on Thursday. Auburn was one of the
favorites to win it. They won fifty three to fifty
in overtime. So it'd be a great four h champions.

Speaker 1 (37:42):
Tim Sega Prepp last night trailed Glacier Peak by thirteen
in the first half, came back and one been a
lot of great basketball down here. Speaking of which, we're
back to the second half year Rainier Beach with the
basketball first. That was Morris in the corner, left corner,
misses the shot. Edmund Wooday comes away with the rebound,
and here we go down to the other end. Rainier
Beach with twenty five lead coming out of the break.

(38:03):
They've led by as many as ten here. One time
they had a ten point lead in Edmonds. What Way
cut it down to one and then they extended it again.
Cameron Hyatt when the basketball, the senior who's going to
Startmouth next year, tries to throw it from right to
his left and the ball is picked off.

Speaker 2 (38:18):
Nice job by Rainier Beach.

Speaker 1 (38:19):
Mi Kley Manise picks it up, they throw it ahead
and Jalen Petty with his twelfth and thirteen points of
the game.

Speaker 4 (38:25):
That was either unbelievable footworker at travel. I can't tell.
I mean, I can't selly.

Speaker 15 (38:30):
You know.

Speaker 4 (38:30):
Sometimes when they're that good and that quick, I can't tell.

Speaker 1 (38:32):
I was gonna say when I used to do something
like that back in the day, was pretty obvious. The
guy like him does it not so much.

Speaker 4 (38:37):
Those feeder move it so fast.

Speaker 1 (38:39):
Yeah, that's why he's going to the next level too.
Ball goes out of bounds, it's still Edmunds Woodway possession
with eighteen to go into shot clock, six point fifty
nine to go here third quarter. He said, a good
crowd here tonight, five o'clock game. Edmunds wood Way can
certainly hear them behind us in Rainier Beach. On the
other end, equally as impressive. Hyatt goes into the lane,
spin moved, and they're gonna say his arm was grabbed.

(39:02):
See if they did say, in fact, he did get
grabbed while in the act of shooting, or no they
did not, So it's gonna be inbounded from the baseline.
Foul is Andre Morris's first foul balls thrown out on top,
that's Grant Williams throws it over to DJ. Carl DJ

(39:22):
being manned up there by Cayden Powers kicks it over
to the side. Grant Williams with the basketball down nineteen
on the shot clock, Edmunds, what a way trying to
get something going. Cam hide into the lane spot Goo
throws it up and in on the move. Nicely done.
Makes the thirty four to twenty.

Speaker 3 (39:37):
Seven games just a great combination of skill and power
right there from Highatt.

Speaker 1 (39:41):
Cayden Power is wasting no time goes in underneath, misses
the shot, however, gets a little help from his teammate there,
micah Illi Manise with He'll put back with some quick.

Speaker 3 (39:51):
Bouts right there. He went straight up with two feet
and got the rim level for that layout.

Speaker 1 (39:55):
William all set trying to push. He can't get the
ball to go in. Nice job on defense by Rainier Beach.
On the other end, Petty for three misses it from
the left corner. Hyatt throwing down deep to DJ Carl
the balls picked off by Petty playing a little defensive
back there able to get the ball in.

Speaker 2 (40:13):
Once again.

Speaker 1 (40:14):
Rainier Beach with the basketball, this time slowing it up
and sending it up into their half court game, leading
by nine five forty nine to go. Third quarter powers
stops and pops misses the twelve footer rebound by Julian
Gray Edmonds Woodway here come the Warriors once again. Feels
like the pace is being picked up here for both teams.

Speaker 3 (40:31):
Yeah, does which favors Rainier Beach, no question about it.
It means Woodway needs a good bucket here.

Speaker 1 (40:36):
Indeed, one of the defenders for Rainier Beach goes down.
They get to Hyatt inside the Key. He misses the shot,
fighting with Mike Yilli Manise, and Manis is able to.

Speaker 2 (40:45):
Come away with it. Nice job by DJ.

Speaker 1 (40:47):
Carl knocks the ball away On the other end, however,
he knocks it right into the hands of Petty and
Rainier Beach will hold onto the basketball and let their
teammates catch up for a moment while they set their offense.
Will frantic right now, Petty long three, He hits it.

Speaker 2 (41:01):
What are you gonna do? Goodness, NBA range right there.
He's got sixteen for the game.

Speaker 1 (41:07):
Tyler Gevin decides he wants to call a thirty second
time out and they're gonna have to regroup. Rainder Beach
on a nice little run here now with their largest
lead of the game.

Speaker 3 (41:14):
Ryder Beach is most comfortable when things are most hectic. Yeah,
and most teams are not very comfortable when things are hectic.
It's gotten hectic the last couple of minutes and they're fine.
But they're fine with that. They're fine with little Slotty basketball.
Turn over here, turn over there, that's okay.

Speaker 4 (41:28):
It just gives us to play faster and we get
into our rhythm when we're playing faster, and boy, Petty
is just on fire all night long.

Speaker 1 (41:36):
Special in Nita and I guess if your edmands, what
do we have to remind you guys, this is not
what got us here. And you're playing right into their hands.
You gotta slow down a little bit.

Speaker 4 (41:43):
Well, now's the time.

Speaker 3 (41:44):
Also, you tell your team there's no such thing as
a twelve point shot at fast And this is the
time when kids can get a little anxious and be like, oh,
we're down by twelve. I gotta hit freeze. I gotta
just chuck it up. You no, no, just take two
at a time, two at a time.

Speaker 2 (41:58):
You're fine.

Speaker 4 (41:59):
There's still are teen minutes left to go in this
basketball game.

Speaker 1 (42:02):
Indeed, here comes Edmunds. One way be impressed right now
by ring your beach. His powers is all over all
seth It finally gets a little hope from DJ Carl,
who comes and picks up the basketball from him being
guarded by Petty at the top of the circle. There
and I spin move into the key by Williams. He
misses the shot rebound was grabbed by Hyatt. However, they'd
already whistled the play dead as Williams is gonna go

(42:23):
to the free throw line.

Speaker 3 (42:24):
Tough luck there for Edmans Wouldwick as Hyatt had that
the rebound put back bucket and now they got.

Speaker 4 (42:29):
To throw line.

Speaker 2 (42:32):
So Grant Williams getting set and ready to go.

Speaker 1 (42:35):
Another one of those players who last year picked up
some valuable experience getting to play a lot as a freshman.
He's really kind of taking his game to another level.
He gets the first free throw to go. He's got
six for the game now as Mike Klimnise is gonna
check out of the game momentarily.

Speaker 3 (42:53):
But a lot of guys coming back on the Edmonds
Woodway team, It's going to be tough, if not impossible,
to replace Hyatt.

Speaker 4 (42:59):
Yeah, but you got a lot of good players on
this team.

Speaker 1 (43:01):
It's a good news bad news thing, right. The good
news is your return a lot of players. The bad
news is the best player probably in your school's history
heading to d one. Hit the second free throw, thirty
nine to twenty nine score as Petty and Marcus Silliman.
He's playing a little catch there for a moment. Petty
back out with the basketball, backs off of the defender, drives,

(43:22):
kicks it over the powers the long three off the
back iron. Hyatt grabs the rebound and he's looking to
push at Freedman's woodway coming down the floor goes by
a stationary power.

Speaker 2 (43:32):
So trying to pick up a charge, and there was
contact and the whistle finally blows.

Speaker 3 (43:35):
I thought there was contact on the shot and they
didn't call it, and they finally called it on the
on the loose ball after the shot, but or they
got to call it on the shot.

Speaker 4 (43:43):
Looks like Hyatts walking the free throw line.

Speaker 1 (43:46):
And I think the raider Beach faithful thought the same
thing you thought, is the the boo birds are coming
out for the first time, and.

Speaker 4 (43:52):
Well, I think it's the right call to give two
free throws. But the whistle certainly.

Speaker 3 (43:56):
Wasn't blown until Way posts on secondary contact on the rebound.

Speaker 8 (44:03):
Yeah, it was.

Speaker 1 (44:04):
Definitely a delayed whistle by a couple of seconds. There
is he hits the first free throw. So Hight now
with nine for the game, trying to get himself into
double figures here and does thirty nine to thirty one
score with four to twenty four to go in the
third quarter, Beach bringing the ball up Petty, who is
red hot right now with sixteen points, looking to get

(44:26):
a screen there from Powers isolated it with all set
goes by him, throws the ball up, he gets it
to go, and he's gonna.

Speaker 2 (44:32):
Go to the free throw line for the end one.

Speaker 4 (44:35):
Why know we just do.

Speaker 3 (44:36):
Tournament MVPs and not game MVPs. But we get game MVPs.
There's no question who would get it if Rainier Beach
hangs onto this. That's number eleven, Taylor Petty, number.

Speaker 1 (44:45):
Eleven kind of taking over right now and getting it
done in a big way. He's got but seven points
here in the quarter alone, and could be eight if
he makes this free throw and we're not even halfway
through the period yet. Free throws up and it is good.
Crawls over the front rim drops through four thirty one
lead for the Vikings. DJ Carl, being pressed by Petty

(45:06):
right now, finally gets so across the mid court line.
That's Dray Simonson with the basketball gets over to DJ Carl.
He loses control along the baseline, turnover and the Vikings
get the ball once again.

Speaker 3 (45:20):
Tyler Gavin just asks his assistant how many time outs
they got left.

Speaker 4 (45:23):
He says three.

Speaker 3 (45:24):
I said I want to take one now, So Tyler
Gavin realizes it's.

Speaker 4 (45:28):
Kind of it's redline time. Now.

Speaker 3 (45:30):
He just needs to make sure you get a couple
of buckets and a couple of stops in a row,
just to stop.

Speaker 4 (45:35):
Them bleeding right now and get the momentum back on
your side.

Speaker 1 (45:38):
Forty two thirty one, score, three fifty seven to go
here in the third quarter. Yeah, if you're Edmonds wdway,
it's now we're never time.

Speaker 2 (45:45):
So you gotta get.

Speaker 1 (45:46):
Start getting something going rounse. It's going to be a
long ride back up to Stalwich County tonight. Hey, are
you a fan of Washington high school sports? You're looking
to keep up on your favorite teams, Well, now there's

Speaker 3 (46:21):
Jalen Patty nineteen points, eight of fifteen, two of six
from behind the arc.

Speaker 4 (46:25):
He's just been doing it all.

Speaker 3 (46:27):
Cameron Hyatts had a great game two ten points, nine
rebounds are Gona knee. A little more from him, and
somebody's gonna have to step up as a second fiddle
to Hyatt, either attacking or just hitting some threes.

Speaker 4 (46:37):
If Hyatt drives in and draws the defense and kicks
it out, well.

Speaker 1 (46:41):
We'll see if they can get something milling here. In
the final three to fifty seven of the corner, Rainier
Beach win the basketball match, their largest lead of the
night at this point. Bringing the ball into the front court, Petty,
who being guarded by Carl Carl staying wisely about six
or seven feet behind him in front of the three
point line, all goes over from right to left, back

(47:02):
to center again. Dray Morris with the basketball, gets it
over to Powers, drives in a little shoulder into all
set that creates the space, puts up a shot and
misses it. Petty comes away with a rebound, and we're
gonna get a new thirty four r in your beach
all set yarding. Powers gets screened by Marcus illi Manis

(47:23):
and gets the basket. Powers, popping from twelve feet out,
gets his seventh point of the game.

Speaker 4 (47:28):
He's he's been quiet. He was just too a maid
before that. But that was a nice pull up jump shot.

Speaker 1 (47:34):
He's just got a very clean game and just looks
looks like a big time player going to Rutgers next year,
and we get a whistle here.

Speaker 4 (47:41):
He's got a college body right now, he does.

Speaker 2 (47:43):
He does.

Speaker 3 (47:44):
That's the thing I mean different from him and Petty.
I mean, Petty's gonna have to put on a little
bit more awake if Petty's got a.

Speaker 4 (47:48):
College game, but he might get he might get pushed
around a little bit at the college level as a freshman,
so he needs to put on some pounds.

Speaker 2 (47:54):
He needs to put on some pounds.

Speaker 1 (47:56):
He obviously, like he said, doesn't have a heightwork into
his favor. Somebody last night at the scores table when
I was watching these guys play, was trying to compare
Powers this game to Brandon Roy a little bit.

Speaker 2 (48:07):
I thought that was an interesting comparison.

Speaker 3 (48:08):
But body style, yes, explosiveness though I haven't seen it
yet now. I saw Brandon a lot more in high
school than I've seen Powers. But Brandon had an unbelievable explosive.

Speaker 2 (48:19):
That's a heck of a comparison to a player to
be compared to.

Speaker 1 (48:22):
Regardless, but by the way Edmonds Woday scoring on their
last possession, Petty missing on the other end, Edmunds who
Way gets the ball knocked out of bounds. Forty four
to thirty three, now to forty four to go, and
it looks like one of the officials over there wiping
off a little water or perspiration off the basketball, and
we're ready to go once again. DJ Carl, who's a

(48:42):
goalkeeper for the Edmunds Woodway soccer team that made it
to the state quarterfinals last year. And Carl almost on
cu made of three rims out goes into the hands
of Rainier Beach and.

Speaker 2 (48:51):
Here they come once again.

Speaker 3 (48:53):
I love all the multiple sport athletes we're talking about
in Edmonds, Womay. I'm a huge proponent of high school
players playing more than one sport of them.

Speaker 1 (49:00):
Out here today. Indeed, and there's a shot by Powers
falls out, I'll give you another. I'll give you a
football connection to these guys here in a minute that
you might enjoy us. Hyatt brings the ball up. Hyatt
could looks like he could be a good football player. Well,
Hyatt has football in his blood, and you absolutely are right,
he certainly could be a football player. Will all Set
who had the basketball there just now I mentioned how

(49:22):
Hyatt didn't just transfer into a situation with a bunch
of guys he doesn't know. He grew up with these guys.
Cam Hyatt and Will all sets Dads played for for
Frosty Western. I feel you back in the late NINETYGA.
These guys have known each other well. Steve Alseth was
a defensive back because Zach Hyatt was a wide receiver
for Appel you back in the day.

Speaker 3 (49:44):
I could see all Seth as a safety, I could
see I could see Cam Hyatt.

Speaker 2 (49:48):
As a tight end. I could see Cam Hyatt has
a lot of things tighten.

Speaker 4 (49:52):
On offense and an edge rusher on defense. Now would
that work really with that body?

Speaker 2 (49:56):
Any anything but the oor D line. I think he
could play.

Speaker 1 (49:58):
Yeah, he looks like he's got the Fortunately for him,
he's pretty good at basketball, so it doesn't need to worry.

Speaker 2 (50:03):
All said makes the first free throw, hits the second
as well. He's got eight for the game.

Speaker 1 (50:07):
We're now under the two minute mark to go here
in the third quarter, forty four to thirty five score.

Speaker 3 (50:11):
Well, you got it to single digit deficit, all right. Now,
The goal is can you get it to five or
six by the end.

Speaker 4 (50:17):
Of the quarter.

Speaker 1 (50:18):
Eddy's gonna try to have other ideas. They're kicks it
into the corner. Robinson back in the game, Long too, hits.
It'll just kind of an unsung hero right here.

Speaker 4 (50:27):
So you can talk about body styles. His body style
looks exactly like his dad.

Speaker 1 (50:31):
Uh huh. It's not the same thing when it for
some play Hiatt being double team, He's gonna try to
go up and underneath and draw some contact there as
maycial Rivers back into the ball game again.

Speaker 2 (50:41):
I think they're gonna get Rivers on the foul. Indeed
they are.

Speaker 3 (50:44):
He uses his body as well as any high school
player I've seen in quite a few years.

Speaker 2 (50:50):
And that's Cameron Hyatt, Amber and Ryatt like.

Speaker 3 (50:53):
He invites the contact, but he uses his pivot foot
and just will bowl into guys, but doing it without
fling and then pivot, pivot, pivot until he can find
just a little seam to get through and get a
shot up and draw the foul.

Speaker 1 (51:06):
Contorts himself well, draws contact, gets the foul. In this case,
hits the first free throw, that's his thirteenth point. Grant
Williams checking back in for the Warriors. Hyatt misses the
second shot is Rivers, who the foul was called on,
comes away with the rebound and it's now a forty
six to thirty six game and Petty steps back for
a three ken get it to go. Hyatt tries to

(51:29):
grab it. Ball sports out of his hands, but right
into his teammate's hands, that's Grant Williams, and then he
throws it away and do that. You can definitely not
do that. Throw up behind him trying to get DJ Carl.
The ball bounces off of his hands into Marcus Elim
and knees his hands. He's about four feet in the basket,
leaps up, slams it on down and it is a
forty eight thirty six score, and Tyler Giving is fired

(51:49):
up and he's not happy with his.

Speaker 2 (51:51):
Own team right now.

Speaker 3 (51:52):
Yeah, you can't throw the ball backwards when you're getting pressed.
And Tyler Gaving was very frustrated, kind of had had
his pen in one hand, his whiteboard and the other
and slammed his pendants whiteboard.

Speaker 4 (52:01):
They all went exploding on the on the floor.

Speaker 3 (52:04):
But you know, you really saw an opportunity there for
for Edmunds Woodway, they had numbers going the other way.

Speaker 4 (52:10):
It was a ten point game. They could have cut
it to eight, maybe seven and get some momentum.

Speaker 3 (52:14):
Instead, instead of pushing it up the floor, they went
backwards into the press steal dunk the other way.

Speaker 2 (52:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (52:21):
Now, you do not want a four point swing against
Rayder Beach when you're already trailing them in the state
championship game. That's exactly what they're dealing.

Speaker 2 (52:28):
With one twelve to go here in the third quarter.
And again we've we've said it time and time again
here over the last hour. It's not over yet.

Speaker 1 (52:35):
We've seen Edmonds wood Way chip away, We've seen them
go on runs. It's been a game of runs, quite
frankly so far. And now it's Edmons Woodways turned to
see if they're gonna hang around here and make this
a game or not for the next nine minutes and
twelve seconds.

Speaker 3 (52:47):
And you're not quite in let's be patient mode if
you're rain your beach. But how about let's be smart.
Let's take smart shots. You don't have to like work
the shot clock down every time, but let's be smart
and take a good shot every time you're beat.

Speaker 2 (53:00):
And that's what you don't want.

Speaker 1 (53:01):
Right there is a hiatt overthrown all set that's picked
off by Robinson on the other end. Morris for three
left it short, but gets his own rebound, kicks it
over into the left corner and right back to more
So that was a little bit of a crazy player there.

Speaker 2 (53:14):
He got a lucky one. It just didn't put but
enough on it before the shot.

Speaker 3 (53:17):
And I all Robinson got away with a carry that
everybody behind me in the ends wood way section saw.
Got a few hundred referees U pas they do. I
think they were right about that one.

Speaker 2 (53:27):
Ale.

Speaker 1 (53:27):
It's a petty petty three alms over the front rim
and drops in the soup, touch of petty right there.
Twenty two points for the game eleven here in the quarter,
and now RB with their biggest lead at fifteen fifty
one thirty six shot clock in the game clock three
second differential. Here is Edmonds what away trying to get
something going.

Speaker 4 (53:47):
It feels like a must score here for Edmonds quarter.

Speaker 1 (53:50):
Indeed, it does fifteen down and they don't want to
get Beach the ball back. You can see they're working
towards making sure they leave them with as little time
as possible. Shot clock at three, Hyatt pops a fourteenth
footer and misses it rebound by Julian Gray puts it
back up and end and I had almost coming away
with a steel on the inbound, but the clock strikes

(54:10):
zero and we are through three quarters of play. Rainier
Beach on a nice third quarter run there courtesy of
mister Taylor Petty.

Speaker 2 (54:18):
You're gonna take a fifty one to thirty eight lead
into the final quarter.

Speaker 1 (54:21):
You're listening to the twenty twenty five WIA Yister Credit
Union State Basketball Championships on Sports Radio nine fifteen jar.

Speaker 10 (54:29):
More and more these days, it feels like sports are
losing out to hype.

Speaker 4 (54:34):
Who just who?

Speaker 10 (54:34):
Who signed the fattest contract? Who got busted for cheating? Lost?

Speaker 7 (54:38):
Two?

Speaker 10 (54:39):
Is the unique capacity sports have to inspire us to
unite us well, Great news, sports fans. Sports are still
being played for the right reasons. They're still as entertaining
as they are character building. You just have to know
where to find it, and you only have to look
as far as your local Washington high school. You know
the place where the games are exciting, concession are affordable,

(55:01):
and the parking is free, where the emphasis is on
hustle and heart instead of height. If you prefer real, honest,
to goodness, sport played for all the right reasons. You'll
find it at your hometown high school. High school sports
games are being played this weekend at Washington High School
near you. Okay, everybody who's in this.

Speaker 7 (55:23):
Message presented by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and the
Washington State Secondary Athletic Administrators Association, eight.

Speaker 1 (55:33):
Minutes to go to determine a three eight boys state champion,
and right now it is Rainier Beach in control fifty
one thirty eight. However, we've mentioned it already time and
time again. We've seen Edmunds wood Way reel them back in.
Do they have another run the left in them? We're
about to find out here in just a moment, Rainier
Beach back on the floor. They're ready to go, Edmunds
Woodway breaking their huddle, and we're about ready to begin

(55:56):
the fourth quarter here Steve Willets along with Dick Faine
court and what's been an entertaining basketball game. You wouldn't
know if we look through the score right now, but
it's definitely been a fun one to watch.

Speaker 3 (56:06):
It has, and if you're Edmonds Woodway, you just got
to look at sixty points for Rainer Beaches too much.

Speaker 4 (56:11):
You got to hold them in the fifties here.

Speaker 3 (56:12):
If you have a chance to win, I think you
tell your kids, hey, can we hold them to eight
points this quarter? If we get hold them eight points
and keep them under sixty for the game, we've got
enough firepower to score twenty two and get a W.

Speaker 1 (56:23):
And they held Mouth Stokane to nine points in the
second half last night. Three ball up, lift it shorts.
That was Dray Simonson, scrambled for the ball, comes away
with it. As Julian Gray tries to throw a crossboard pass,
Robinson picks it off and he's gonna go in for
the easy way up. Rain your beach back out by fifteen.

Speaker 3 (56:43):
Yeah, they got the great offensive rebound, no second chance opportunities.

Speaker 4 (56:46):
And then threw it away. Just too many turnovers for
Edmunds Woodway today.

Speaker 1 (56:49):
And how many times have we seen Edmunds Woodway tonight
make that twenty foot or longer pass and Rainier Beach
is just almost waiting for like a dB waiting for
a wide receiver run in the flat well.

Speaker 4 (56:59):
I mean, with all due due respect to Westco, they
don't have this type of quickness.

Speaker 2 (57:03):
I was thinking it, but I was gonna let you
say it. I'm a Wesco guys.

Speaker 3 (57:07):
I mean, Westco's got good basketball, but as far as
just raw speed, they don't have what Rainier Beach has.

Speaker 1 (57:13):
Yeah, you can make that pass against Lindwind, not against
Rainier Beach. And here's another breakaway, Patty going up and
throwing it down with authority. He's got twenty four tonight,
Rainier Beach with a seventeen point lead, and now things
are looking a little more dire for the Warriors.

Speaker 3 (57:27):
Yeah, smelling it now, all the Rainier Beach coasts with
coaches with their fists in the air.

Speaker 4 (57:31):
After that dunk by Patty.

Speaker 1 (57:34):
Hyatt pulls up for three misses it rebound. That's Marcus
Manise kicks it over to Petty. Why not, He's not
a bad guy to have the ball in the hands up,
slows it up just a little bit here and resets
the offense. Six point thirty two to go, and I
think Rainier Beach is starting to smell that gold ball

(57:54):
on that trophy right now.

Speaker 4 (57:55):
Now you're going to clock mode. I remember saying I said,
space smartball.

Speaker 3 (57:59):
Now you can go into clock because you're up six,
you're up seventeen with six twenty left to go.

Speaker 4 (58:03):
You can take the clock down every single possession, and.

Speaker 1 (58:06):
Petty, willing to do that, kicks over to Robinson for three.
He misses it and Julian Greg getting tied up with
Micah Yelli Manise and they're gonna call Gray with the foul.

Speaker 3 (58:17):
Wow.

Speaker 4 (58:17):
I thought that was a good box out Dad.

Speaker 2 (58:20):
I was throwing his.

Speaker 1 (58:21):
Body around into him as Gray was fronting. He he
was in front of Mike on the play, but.

Speaker 2 (58:30):
Not initially.

Speaker 1 (58:30):
We might even get a non call there. And now
we're gonna get a thirty second time out from ring
your beach.

Speaker 7 (58:37):
Well.

Speaker 3 (58:37):
And you can see Tyler Devint come out into the
court yelling good box out, good box out, And that's
just he's hoping to Raff.

Speaker 4 (58:44):
Will hear him when you say something like that. But
you know he's been going off.

Speaker 3 (58:49):
He's been having his battles with the refs really for
about the last quarter. And I don't really think it's
paying off.

Speaker 2 (58:54):
No, it's not, it's not.

Speaker 8 (58:55):
It might go the other way.

Speaker 1 (58:56):
Actually, I guess if you're if you're a coach, you
gotta try something right, I mean, get your team a
little fired up. We've We've seen it time and time
again here at the Dome, and it's right now you
like you said, it's not working for him and his team.
It's certainly Rainier Beach is coming out and just running
away with this thing right now.

Speaker 4 (59:11):
And yeah, and Rainder Beach is having fun. Now. This
is this is rapping. The first three quarters were kind.

Speaker 3 (59:17):
Of a grind for Rainer Beach Is, like they're like,
oh man, this isn't gonna be used. This is we
think we gonna win the state championship. But this is
gonna be tough.

Speaker 4 (59:24):
And now it's starting to get easier and it's starting
to get fun for that.

Speaker 1 (59:28):
Yeah, you're seeing the smiles here a little bit. And
like I said, getting back to their game and see
what they do here is they're gonna try to tick
down even more of this clock thirty second shot clock
is Petty pulls the ball out on top being guarded
by DJ Carl and we get a whistle away from
the ball.

Speaker 2 (59:43):
They're gonna call an offensive foul. I believe on Robinson
on to play.

Speaker 3 (59:49):
Well, maybe coach Geving's a worst made a difference there
and off the ball offensive foul, or so.

Speaker 1 (59:57):
He hopes his dj Carl bringing the ball up, getting
trapped initial least when over to Hyatt, Hyatt going to
his left, were now under six minutes to play. Cam
Hyatt going past the defenders, lays that one up and
him he now has.

Speaker 2 (01:00:08):
Fifteen for the game.

Speaker 3 (01:00:10):
There's that change of speed by Hyatt. It's fast, slow, fast,
and it's just so hard to defend.

Speaker 1 (01:00:16):
Man, he's got another gear when he accelerates, and it's
certainly fun to watch trying to keep his team in
this game. And speaking of guys with another gear like
Illimanize trying to get on through the key there, gets
tangled up with a couple of defenders and he's gonna
go to the free throw line.

Speaker 2 (01:00:35):
And that fall foul is gonna be.

Speaker 1 (01:00:36):
Called on Julian Gray his third I will say this,
neither team really. I'll probably jink to one of the
teams right now by saying this, But neither team I'm
really having any kind of foul situations tonight. Yeah, I
didn't really watch anybody.

Speaker 3 (01:00:48):
It's been a well refed game. It's been it's been
fairly called and and it's had a good flow. I mean,
nobody wants to see a state championshipame where teams are
shooting thirty free throws.

Speaker 1 (01:00:56):
No, and I'm sure over the twenty seven years you've
done a few of those and not fun for you.
Nobody really wins in those hits. The second free throw
fifty six to forty. You can see the or here
the Edmonds Woodway fans behind us, they're still trying to.

Speaker 2 (01:01:09):
Cheer their guys onto a victory. They've got their work
cutout for him.

Speaker 4 (01:01:12):
Now they need some threes.

Speaker 3 (01:01:13):
Now we gotten to the point where twos aren't gonna
help you when you're down sixteen.

Speaker 2 (01:01:18):
And now he's gont hit threes when beaches all over.

Speaker 13 (01:01:20):
You, they're there.

Speaker 1 (01:01:21):
They are not gonna give them any gimmes and facts.
Nice job by Marcus Ellymnist to knock that ball out
of bounds.

Speaker 3 (01:01:27):
Is now, if they're going to overplay like that, you
get some back cuts, you know, back cuts for easy twos.
I'll take that right now, but and maybe that'll open
up some three balls in a minute or two.

Speaker 2 (01:01:36):
I'm almost challenging them to try to go for the
back cuts right now.

Speaker 1 (01:01:38):
We'll see what they do here on this inbound nine
seconds to go on the shot clock ball being inbounded
from the corner another long pass, Simonson gets it, kicks
down low DJ carl In through the trees, kicks it
out to Gray open three in the corner. He hits
it Julie and Gray with his second three of the game,
gives him eight points on the night, fifty six forty

(01:02:00):
three and giving Edmonds one way a little hope to
try to maybe perhaps get back into this thing.

Speaker 3 (01:02:06):
Patty's doing the right thing though, He's just gonna take
it all the way down and he's probably gonna go
either one four low or a high ball screen.

Speaker 4 (01:02:13):
Oh, he gave it up and got open inside.

Speaker 1 (01:02:15):
Wow, damn Marcus Silliman's Nie was holding the ball up
on top of it, and then a steal from Robinson.
He misses the shop and gets his own rebound, Petty
coming away with it, pull it out yep as defender
fell down a moment ago and Petty had the easy
lay up there and he's got twenty six now and
like I said, you don't need to rush the shot.
You got plenty of time lift you want to burn clock,
Robinson opened up three misses it. Hyatt comes down with

(01:02:38):
you at another rebound four eighteen to go in the game,
spin move gets away from Rivers, goes underneath Robinson puts
it up off the back, iron ball.

Speaker 2 (01:02:48):
Falls to the ground.

Speaker 1 (01:02:49):
Here Hyatt's still on the ground is he seems to
be okay as one of his teammates DJ Carl goes to.

Speaker 2 (01:02:55):
Pick him up, and we're gonna get a foul called.
And I didn't see who they called that one.

Speaker 1 (01:02:59):
That looks it's gonna actually be on high it his
second it's so interesting missing the shot, goes to the
ground and must have made a little contact with one
of the Rainier Beach offensive players on the way.

Speaker 2 (01:03:11):
Down the feet and the floor there.

Speaker 3 (01:03:13):
Well is not complaining about it now Gevin is he's
over in the face off again over in the corner.

Speaker 2 (01:03:20):
Tyler Gevin. I've gotten to know him pretty well. Love
the guy. But he definitely likes to likes to work
the officials when he's out there.

Speaker 3 (01:03:26):
He's a very good guy, that Matt. He gets fired
up during games, There's no question about it.

Speaker 2 (01:03:30):
One hundred percent.

Speaker 1 (01:03:31):
You can see the faces even a little bit red
right now. Why not he's coaching in the state championship game.
He's given it all. He has Robinson with another look
besides not to shoot it there as Simonson comes over
to defend him.

Speaker 2 (01:03:42):
Eight seconds to go here on the shot clock.

Speaker 1 (01:03:44):
Robinson with the ball, after passing off to Powers, Powers
gets it right back to him. Ball has lost momentarily,
and they're gonna call the folly. Believe on Robinson. He
lost the ball and then went to the ground and
kind of tripped up Julian Gray on his way down,
and they're gonna whistle him.

Speaker 2 (01:04:00):
For the contact. His second Powell.

Speaker 3 (01:04:03):
Al Robinson is just an energy bug here, Yeah, just
like his dad, absolute energy bus.

Speaker 1 (01:04:08):
As soon as you said energy bug, I had the
exact same thought that I'm like, looks like the number
thirteen back in the day, right plays a lot like
nat all set thought about. The three pulls up from
fifteen feet out, gets it to fall. He's now into
double figures ten for him on the night. It's a
fifty eight to forty five game. And on the other end, Powers,
coming right back down, kicks it into the corner. Marcus

(01:04:30):
Willi Manise almost shot the three, kicks it out to
Robinson back to Ili Manise working the ball around nicely.
Now a lot of passing going on here. Teddy finally
slows it down a bit and pulls back, sets up
the offense tend to go Powers with a runner hits
it from fourteen feet out.

Speaker 2 (01:04:46):
That's really nice.

Speaker 4 (01:04:46):
Now that you talked about Brandon roy earlier, that's that's Brandon.

Speaker 1 (01:04:49):
Roy esk right there on that shot will be right
right there, is all set with a three hits off
the front of the rim, bounces out Robinson with another rebound.

Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
Now under the three minute mark, Radier Beach up.

Speaker 1 (01:05:02):
Sixty to forty five, trying to win that first state
title since twenty sixteen, which doesn't even seem possible to me,
knowing that for a while there, it seemed like every
other year Rainier Beach was in the championship game at
the very least, if not winning it. Powers pulling up
on that shoulder on the left side, just almost the

(01:05:24):
same spot he hit the last one, and he drains
another one.

Speaker 2 (01:05:27):
He's got eleven for.

Speaker 3 (01:05:28):
Mortal Schools and Mortal Coaches. Two and ten years would
be unbelievable, right, that's epic drought.

Speaker 2 (01:05:34):
And I have to be honest. I mean I come
to this tournament every year.

Speaker 1 (01:05:37):
Until we were getting ready to do this game, I
didn't realize it had been a nine year drought. All
set in the corner for three makes it a sixty
two to forty eight game, two o five to go,
and the coaching staff over there also wearing matching sweat
gear and shoes. Marcus elly Monist goes up, misses the shot,

(01:06:00):
draws contact on the play.

Speaker 3 (01:06:02):
Oh Raider beats is always styled Yah has got the
white the white sweatsuits. They got the orange shoes. All
the players have the yellow shoes. They're looking good.

Speaker 1 (01:06:13):
Yeah, they get the they get the Drip State title too,
Probably they do. They definitely do, certainly more so than
anything else we've seen down here this weekend, and we've
seen a few things, but yeah, they always always look
really good. Look even better holding up a trophy here.
In about another minute fifty five seconds, first free throw
by Billy Menisse goes through. He's got ten now sixty

(01:06:33):
three to forty eight ball game sixty four to forty eight,
and hopefully as soon as his game's over as well,
we'll get a Mike Pathaya interview perhaps and maybe one
or two players in the process. Not that I'm trying
to give him the title already, he had been literally
still out there playing but missing another shot there.

Speaker 2 (01:06:51):
Simonson Raider Beach comes.

Speaker 1 (01:06:52):
Away with the rebound down to a minute thirty eight
and all set playing up really close on Billi. Manie
finally gets a from him, kicks the ball back out
and they're slowing things down once again, and finally William
Alseth says, now, I got to value to try.

Speaker 3 (01:07:06):
To get this ball back, and yeah, I don't think
the officials want to call a foul, but all Seth,
you put two hands on the back, and so you
gotta call the foul. They're letting a lot of contact
go inside on that possession. And then finally Paul Seth
just with the shove, I mean not an egregious shove,
but a shove.

Speaker 4 (01:07:21):
Nonetheless, they had to call it.

Speaker 1 (01:07:22):
I think he was even recognizing, Okay, well the bump
isn't working. I guess I gotta go with a two
hands plash, right. And I think this kind of signifies
Edmund float Away recognizing that it's probably not gonna happen tonight.
A couple of guys that have Workedchart all year and
played for them and played huge roles, Dray Lloyd and
Kevin Shilling. Shilling jerk coming into the game for the
first time. I know, Harris Dobson checking into the game also,

(01:07:46):
so three Warriors getting a chance. Cameron Hyatt checking out
for the last time, and he's getting hugs from his
coaches right now and ring your beach now gonna empty
the bench. They got an all new five coming out
and a scanning ovation coming from their crowd right now,
right behind their bench, recognizing that the state championship it
is just a matter of moments away. Five new guys

(01:08:08):
coming on, Petty Powers, both Elimanise guy brothers getting hugs
from the coaches right now, beach fans cheering loud, having
a good time with it. Robinson with a free throw,
a tap up and in coach, but they are over
there celebrating, actually a couple of the assistant coaches hugging

(01:08:30):
each other out rikto Robinson being pulled out so he
can enjoy the celebration with the bench as well.

Speaker 2 (01:08:36):
Sixty six a minute, twenty nine eleven.

Speaker 3 (01:08:39):
It's really cool that all these guys, everybody on both matches,
with the chance to play.

Speaker 4 (01:08:44):
You can say I played in the state championship game.
That is pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (01:08:48):
If there's one silver lining to a blowout. That's always
the case, as well as it should be. This is
a moment these guys won't forget fifty sixty years from
now when.

Speaker 3 (01:08:56):
They're talking to their grandkids, because these guys put just
as much effort as everybody else does there in practice
every single night.

Speaker 2 (01:09:02):
Late and a three ball up in there.

Speaker 1 (01:09:05):
That's dray Lloyd. He missed it, by the way. That
was Luke Bollan that had the ball there for a moment.
Didn't quite get a chance to get a shot off.
But David is best there trying to mention some of
these guys that are on the floor for Rainier Beach
right now too.

Speaker 2 (01:09:16):
That's number twenty. Knowledge, you're right with the basketball. He
had j.

Speaker 1 (01:09:21):
Wheeler Burns, the guard who's running across the floor right now,
Ray Proctor Mills Junior getting his first action.

Speaker 2 (01:09:27):
Of the night, as is Jacob Luke tick.

Speaker 1 (01:09:32):
Shot clocked down to three, A three ball up in
the air from right, He misses it, ball is rebounded
by Luke Bolan, tries to push ball gets taken away
by Wheeler Burns.

Speaker 2 (01:09:42):
Twenty four seconds left in the game. Whoef from the
left side and knowledge right can sand He scored in
the Tubba Doome.

Speaker 17 (01:09:48):
That's it.

Speaker 3 (01:09:48):
Themship games even better than saying I played in the
State Chamger game.

Speaker 4 (01:09:51):
I scored in the States Chamager game.

Speaker 1 (01:09:53):
He got a bucket. You'll always be able to look
back on it. Ten seconds to go beach up by twenty.
Now a chance one of the Warriors to maybe etch
his name in there. And ball is partially blocked. That
was Chillinger that had the shot block. Clock is now
at zero's.

Speaker 4 (01:10:07):
The ballgame is over.

Speaker 1 (01:10:09):
The Rainier Beach Vikings are the twenty twenty five three
eight boys state champions jumping up on the scoreboard across
the way from US, celebrating with their fans, having a
great time. And they were the one seed coming in
only two losses on the entire season. They had a
twenty one game winning streak at one point. They looked
every bit the park throughout the week, none more so

(01:10:31):
than they did tonight, and deservedly so. Still celebrating over there.
The cameras are catching everything now finally the coaching stuff,
getting the guys ready to go through the line walk through,
and again I gotta tip my cat to my cap
to the guys from up north Defferan's Onaway Warriors, best
finished in school history. It's gonna be a little painful tonight.

(01:10:51):
But as these guys get older, as they even get
it further away from tonight, maybe it's the next week,
maybe it's the week after, they're gonna appreciate what they accomplish.

Speaker 3 (01:10:58):
Oh, no question about it. A fabulus a season for
Tyler Gevin and the Crow High and.

Speaker 2 (01:11:03):
Just a really really nice player.

Speaker 4 (01:11:06):
Gotta be an All State, an All State player, probably
a first team Hall State player. It's just just really
really amazing. He's showing up, showing the heart too.

Speaker 2 (01:11:13):
It's decide the state.

Speaker 4 (01:11:14):
The hindside to his fans says, well, well done in
my hand. But you know, Radiar Beach just rattet it up.
The intensity laid in that game.

Speaker 3 (01:11:21):
I think they they played a little bit at Edwards
Woodway pace and kept Edmonds went way in the game
and then they racked it up and when they.

Speaker 4 (01:11:31):
Did, it was lights out quickly.

Speaker 2 (01:11:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:11:33):
And that's what they do, right, That's who they are,
and that's why they've held a brief And we're gonna
take a break right now. When we come back, we're
gonna try to get some interviews in here. The ring
your Beach Vikings as a team. They're celebrating right over
in turn of the game baseline.

Speaker 2 (01:11:46):
Just to our left. Right now, they've got camera crews
all over the place. They're getting mobbed.

Speaker 1 (01:11:50):
They're having some fun, and we're gonna try to have
a little bit of a good time with them as well.
So we'll take a break once again. The final score
here Raider Beach sixty eight, Edmunds went Way forty eight.
We'll be right back.

Here at the Hardwood Classic. The twenty twenty five three
eight boys state champion, the Rainier Beach Vikings. It's been
nine years since we can say that, but this guy
here is used to winning these titles. Mike Bethia with
his ninth state championship coach, Congratulations.

Speaker 8 (01:14:00):
Thank you so much. I figured, you know, what has
been nine years, So what a way to go getting
number nine?

Speaker 3 (01:14:04):
Yeah, I was telling Steve earlier, I said, you know,
for most programs, two titles in ten years as epic
for Mike mcfans Like, what's going on, Matt?

Speaker 4 (01:14:12):
So, I mean you're You're not a mortal. You're not
a mortal coaching.

Speaker 3 (01:14:15):
This is not a mortal basketball team. Talk about the
job your guys did. I guess a really tough Edmunds
would Wait team. But it looked like you you started
playing Rainier Beach basketball. Getting out of the passing lanes
in the last ten.

Speaker 8 (01:14:26):
Or twelve minutes long old, you know, And that's what
I've been preaching to the guys all year. I knew
they were gonna be a little bit tight. Edmonds would wait,
great team, and you know, we knew that their game
plan is going to be the slowest down. So I
just told him, I said, you know what, we got
a weather and at some point in time, we got
to get a rain and beat him on and that'll
set the stage for the game. And it worked out.

Speaker 2 (01:14:44):
Talk a little bit about the game the Petty had tonight.

Speaker 1 (01:14:46):
I'm just every time we especially that third quarter eleven
points I think in the third quarter alone.

Speaker 8 (01:14:51):
Well, he's capable and he's done that all year long
for us, and you know, I pulled it him to
the side and just told him, I said, man, it's time,
It's time, and hey, guys, let's have some fun to
do this.

Speaker 1 (01:15:02):
By the way, Jamal Crawford bringing you a shirt over
here that says beach boys on the back one of
your sisters are yelling at is the greatest of all time.

Speaker 2 (01:15:11):
Nine nine.

Speaker 4 (01:15:14):
Let's get him on. Let's get.

Speaker 1 (01:15:17):
We don't have to see if this crawd mic works
here right now, there we go. We got Jamal Crawford on.

Speaker 4 (01:15:20):
There as well.

Speaker 2 (01:15:21):
Jamal talk about Mike Matheya, what does he mean to
this program?

Speaker 17 (01:15:23):
What does he mean to you, guys, what he means
to this program, What do he means to our community,
what he means to our city.

Speaker 8 (01:15:28):
I mean, think about it.

Speaker 17 (01:15:29):
How many players have you seen twenty five years later
come back to the alma mater.

Speaker 4 (01:15:33):
Be at that guy?

Speaker 17 (01:15:34):
You know what I mean. So it means we're sending
our kids to him, like all that stuff means so much,
and it's the person he is. It's raising young man.
Is so much deeper than basketball, and that's why we're
all here.

Speaker 2 (01:15:44):
Is he the same person he was back when you
played for him back in the day.

Speaker 17 (01:15:47):
I think he's a little nicer playing for that's only difference,
that's only different.

Speaker 2 (01:15:50):
Tell me about who this guy's next to you here.
This is Dave King.

Speaker 17 (01:15:53):
This is one of the best bigs ever play in
the state. I'll player, I had the honor of player
with him. He actually made me a bad passor because
he caught everything the best out of hands I ever
played with.

Speaker 8 (01:16:01):
I'll end on that note.

Speaker 4 (01:16:02):
Thank you, guys for all the covers.

Speaker 2 (01:16:03):
Absolutely thank you.

Speaker 1 (01:16:04):
Jamal's gonna say, Dave, you've been playing with him for
quite a while.

Speaker 2 (01:16:07):
You've been with coach for a while. Now, what does
it mean to be a part of this tenth champions
meeting is amazing.

Speaker 1 (01:16:13):
Man.

Speaker 19 (01:16:13):
I say something back in ninety eight, I said watch
out for Rainer Beats for many and years and years
and years to come, not knowing it would be that
prophetic Right now, twenty five years later, and this guy
is still doing it at the highest level you could
do it at. And I'm just honored to be an
assistant to help him.

Speaker 4 (01:16:28):
With the journey.

Speaker 1 (01:16:28):
Well, and what a cool commune. I mean, the fact
that you guys do come back. It's not just one
or two if you had. We see the guys on
the bench, We see the second generation of guys that
their kids.

Speaker 19 (01:16:38):
I guess I got a son, Yeah, Jamal got a
sun coming. I got another son coming. So that's what
we're here for.

Speaker 2 (01:16:44):
We love y'all.

Speaker 8 (01:16:45):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (01:16:45):
He's gotta go celebrate.

Speaker 1 (01:16:47):
So short talk there. These guys are getting their picture takets.
I totally understand that we'll try to maybe get one
of these other guys on here in just a moment
as well. But again, just you know you, like you said,
you start to get used to winning these championships when
you're a perennial power. But when you haven't won it
in nine years, it does kind of remind you and
it just makes it that much weater.

Speaker 4 (01:17:04):
Well, and you saw the joy on the on the
face as Jamal Crawford and David King there. I mean,
they're state champions. They know what it feels like.

Speaker 3 (01:17:10):
And it's almost like they were just as happy there yea,
as they were when they won the state championship as players.

Speaker 4 (01:17:16):
And that's what's so cool. You saw the smile on
Mike Bethea's face.

Speaker 3 (01:17:20):
You know, I might get a little bit old when
you win like four out of five years or something
like that, but when you don't win one for nine
years and then.

Speaker 4 (01:17:25):
You taste it again, man, you can just tell how
happy they are.

Speaker 1 (01:17:28):
And they're getting the net ready to go right now.
We'll still see if we can. We may or may
not get one of these players over here, but they
haven't cut the net down yet. So the uh, we've
got the ladder up there off to our right. Actually
they're gonna cut it down on both sides.

Speaker 2 (01:17:39):
It looks like so. And it looks like Robinson going
to cut down the first thread there.

Speaker 1 (01:17:43):
And boy, another one who came off the bench and
really gave them a spark tonight really did.

Speaker 3 (01:17:48):
And a couple of times with those little sneaky peat
steals where Rainier Beach would get a bucket and they
hadn't really been pressing a lot during the course of
the game.

Speaker 4 (01:17:56):
Rainer Beach gets the bucket, everybody.

Speaker 3 (01:17:58):
Can retreats back on defense that Nile Robinson and he
stepped back in the passing lanes just steals the inbounds
and lays it back up and in as it was huge.

Speaker 2 (01:18:06):
Yeah, indeed it was.

Speaker 1 (01:18:07):
So it looks like we got powers right next to
us here. But he's been interviewed by another group here.
So we'll try to get one of these guys. Should
we take a commercial break and see if we can
grab one and yeah, I'll go get somebody else.

Speaker 2 (01:18:16):
Let's do that.

Speaker 4 (01:18:16):
So we're gonna talk produce. I'm a producer and handle
that the five tool.

Speaker 1 (01:18:20):
Guy here today, So tick fan doing a little bit
of everything for us. So again, Rayner Beach with a
twenty point win the three A State Champs. We'll take
a break right now and hopefully when we come back,
we'll have an interview with one of the Vikings players.

Speaker 4 (01:19:05):
That's Starstar eight eight eight bad deck fan here.

Speaker 3 (01:19:08):
Will every day hasn't been sunshine and rainbows this winter.
We've had pretty awesome weather, allowing me and my son
to get out and enjoy some of the best golf
courses in the Northwest and do it at a very
reasonable price, thanks of course, to the Around the Sound
Golf Pass, which gets you twelve rounds of golf at Whitehorse,
McCormick Woods, Cedars of dungeons Port, Ludlow, Avalon and more
for just two seventy nine. But hurry, there aren't many

(01:19:31):
passes left and when they're gone, they're gone. Spring is
almost here. Spend it on the links. Head to seattlegolfpass
dot com today.

Speaker 2 (01:19:42):
And welcome back once again too the Takumdome.

Speaker 1 (01:19:44):
The three eight boys state champions are the Reinier Beach Bikings,
first time in nine years, and one of the key
players on this team, a guy who had what we
have to look at the sheet twenty six points tonight,
Jalen Petty joined this. Jalen, Congratulations. How does it feel
to be a state champion.

Speaker 2 (01:20:00):
In your senior year.

Speaker 20 (01:20:01):
It's a blessing, you know, praying to God every day,
staying close to him and just living through him and
my teammates. I just thank my teammates and my coaches
for everything they prepared us for. So it's a blessing.

Speaker 1 (01:20:12):
You guys had a loss last week in the opening round,
chance to reset a little bit, I know you had.
We're dealing with it, a little bit of an injury
at the time. Was there concern after that night of Okay,
what's going on? We're are we heading in the right direction?
Can we write the shipping?

Speaker 20 (01:20:26):
I think we needed that. You know, it was a
wake up call we were getting two in our heads.
We had to be humbled, and we stayed humbled and
we came together after that. It was a blessing too.

Speaker 17 (01:20:36):
Hey.

Speaker 3 (01:20:36):
Pace of play is always big for you guys when
you guys pick up the pace you love to be
in the eighties and the nineties in scoring.

Speaker 4 (01:20:41):
And it wasn't like that for the first half.

Speaker 3 (01:20:43):
And then that kind of rainier beach shark swarm came
right and you guys started forcing some turnovers and I
started seeing smiles on your guys's face.

Speaker 4 (01:20:51):
Is that what it's the most fun for you? When
you guys are just flying around in passing planes.

Speaker 20 (01:20:55):
Yes, when we're flying around sharing the ball and the womans.
We had a shirt it said one or That's what
we're all about. We're about one more, not just ourselves,
but one more as a team.

Speaker 1 (01:21:05):
We were talking just a moment ago with a few
of the coaches that came over here, and they wanted
to celebrate coach Bethea as well, his ninth championship, You
guys making him, putting him into the record books. What
does it mean to help him get that record and
what does it mean to work and play with that
coaching staff.

Speaker 4 (01:21:19):
Ye, honestly means a lot.

Speaker 20 (01:21:20):
You know, he's I've been with him my freshman year
and since then, he's been family.

Speaker 4 (01:21:26):
He's been close to my family.

Speaker 20 (01:21:27):
So just knowing that he's always by my side and
continuing to teach me through life, not just basketball, especially
with Jamal here, coach Dave, coach Harrow, coach b coach
a Babe, you know, coach the other coach Mike, like
all of them, just like instilling with me knowledge and
wisdom to just keep getting better.

Speaker 17 (01:21:44):
It means a lot.

Speaker 3 (01:21:44):
Talk about this guy right next to you, an al Man,
I mean, he just does such a phenomenal job on
the defensive end.

Speaker 4 (01:21:50):
He kind of sparked your guys run a couple of
different Timesyah, he.

Speaker 8 (01:21:53):
Did, he did.

Speaker 4 (01:21:53):
You know, he's he's all four team, you know what
I mean? Just playing together and just knowing that he
has our back and we have his. It means a lot.

Speaker 2 (01:22:00):
So what do you do to celebrate?

Speaker 4 (01:22:02):
Man, We're about to go kick it.

Speaker 2 (01:22:04):
I don't know, it's not that late.

Speaker 4 (01:22:07):
It's like I don't know what we're about to go do. Hey, congratulations, man,
I appreciate your great job.

Speaker 2 (01:22:12):
You bet what new Mexico. What went into that decision?
Where are you gonna be able?

Speaker 20 (01:22:17):
Just having a good bond with coach Patino and the
other coaches there, and just knowing that I'm gonna have
a great opportunity and I'm just I just love the atmosphere.

Speaker 2 (01:22:25):
So they're getting the winter, They're getting another state champion.
They're so yeah, congratulate right the game?

Speaker 4 (01:22:30):
You can pass with this guy right here? Oh yeah,
right here.

Speaker 1 (01:22:35):
Number zero Katan Powers joining us right now. Okay, congratulations
your state champion. What does this mean to you to
be able to hold trophy?

Speaker 2 (01:22:41):
Everything everything?

Speaker 21 (01:22:42):
I've been here in his home in a state championship
game three years out of my four so this needs
everything giving me.

Speaker 1 (01:22:47):
After after your sophomore year, your junior year, you start
to kind of walk away here wondering is it ever
gonna happen? I mean, I'm running out of time. But
what's the mindseter in the offseason? Does does it drive
you to get back to where you are right now?

Speaker 21 (01:22:57):
Yes, sir, our our summer my senior year, we will
all connect to auto get hevisit.

Speaker 4 (01:23:02):
Of jym all summer.

Speaker 21 (01:23:02):
Even though we weren't in school, we already knew how
to do, so we was prepare for this moment right here,
and we got it done.

Speaker 2 (01:23:07):
I'm just proud of my team.

Speaker 3 (01:23:08):
Would you talk about the great Alumpni associations in basketball
in the state of Washington.

Speaker 4 (01:23:13):
It's really you guys in Garfield.

Speaker 1 (01:23:14):
I mean that.

Speaker 3 (01:23:15):
And so do the Rainier Beach guys come back and
and and support you guys. And and when you haven't
won a state championship here, did they kind of do
they count me ripy a little bit and say, hey,
come on, what's going on here?

Speaker 4 (01:23:25):
What's going on?

Speaker 21 (01:23:25):
Yeah, because Michael's he be honest a lot. So when
I sat down, he was in my face. He screaming
at me. But we already know what I had to do.

Speaker 1 (01:23:33):
They're they're yelling at us. I want him to go
cut down the other right Still, Hey, I'm still enjoy that. Congratulations.

Speaker 4 (01:23:39):
Great job, yep, good job.

Speaker 2 (01:23:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:23:41):
The last thing we want to do is prevent one
of these guys. Got to get that right then, that's
just about coming down. They're holding up a few strings
there for him to cut down. And trophy presentation there's
still photographs taking place.

Speaker 2 (01:23:52):
With it right now. What a cool moment.

Speaker 1 (01:23:54):
It doesn't matter how many times you do this as
a school, it never gets old. And like I said,
it's a special night for Rainier Beach.

Speaker 3 (01:23:59):
Look at Jamal Crawford right now. He is just given
the biggest bear hug to Jalen Petty. I mean, like
there's tears in his eyes. This is really cool, really
really cool.

Speaker 1 (01:24:07):
This is one of those moments right here, and it
just speaks f as to who he is, right, I mean,
we always talk about what a great pillar he is
to the community and again sharing that moment with him,
and obviously those two have a special bond and sharing
a state championship right now, it is really you.

Speaker 4 (01:24:23):
Know, you don't always see it.

Speaker 3 (01:24:24):
Like some people are kind of in shock when they
win a state championship and they come over and they're excited,
but they're like it doesn't sink in right away. It
really seems like it's sunk into these Rainer Beach players
and the end of the coaching staff. This is a
almost a different butthet I mean, I've I've probably I
might have done all nine of those interviews postgame for
Mike Withea, and this was a different betheia, Like it's

(01:24:48):
he's always happy.

Speaker 4 (01:24:50):
But a lot of times he talks.

Speaker 1 (01:24:51):
About, well, we didn't do this, and we didn't do that,
and we didn't do this, but we still got the win,
so that's good.

Speaker 3 (01:24:55):
He wasn't about that tonight. He was not about that tonight.
He was all about just embracing them.

Speaker 2 (01:25:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:25:00):
And in some sense too, you get the monkey off
the back too, right, I mean everybody because you know again,
he said, and he's kind of the victim of his
own success, right, he has set the bar so high.
Everybody expects you to win the state championship every year. Yeah,
you go two years without it, four years. Now we're
getting up towards a decade. And what's going on, guys,
when you're gonna win another one? And then lo and
behold last night, Garfield's up by tenethy end of the

(01:25:22):
first quarter. Oh, here we go again, right, and here
we are twenty four hours later. They're cutting down a net.
Right now, they're holding up a trophy. I mean, it's
a pretty big moment for them. And again, nine state championships.
It's hard to fathom at one coach winning that many.

Speaker 3 (01:25:34):
Well, and getting that rivalry win too. That's you know
that it might loosen you up a little bit. Yeah,
either get that rivalry win in the semis. Now you
come into the come into against a team or not
nearly as familiar with you just kind of go and
play your own game. We won that rivalry game to
get here. We might as well win this one, right,
we got past that hurt. Or we might as well
win this one.

Speaker 1 (01:25:52):
Yeah, and look at some of the numbers there really quick.
You didn't want to give a few other shoutouts here again,
Jalen Petty gets twenty six points. Two other guys in
double digits interviewed Kaden Powers, he had eleven. Marcus Ilimanise
ends up with eleven points four to five shooting on
the night too, so he was very efficient in what
he was doing there. You had his brother Micah with
eight rebounds tonight, just a very solid and nil Robinson

(01:26:15):
ends up with nine points. I mean, just a very
well rounded game for those guys tonight.

Speaker 3 (01:26:19):
But you look at that points per possession for Rainerby's
one point two to three points per possession.

Speaker 4 (01:26:24):
That is some efficiency.

Speaker 3 (01:26:25):
They shot fifty percent from the field twenty seven of
fifty four, pretty decent from three point range seven of
twenty three thirty percent, got to the free throw line
eleven times.

Speaker 4 (01:26:35):
But you know that that two point field goal percentage.

Speaker 3 (01:26:38):
Of twenty of thirty one, I mean, and a lot
of those coming off, you know, some coming off of steals,
some coming off of back cuts. They were able to
knock down the tough ones, but they were also able
to get the easy ones when the easy ones were
presented to them.

Speaker 1 (01:26:52):
And they were out rebounded tonight, so they needed that defense.
They needed to pick off those passes. And we said
time and time again every time that Edmunds what do
we thought that they could complete a passer the co
court that they're used to completing. Rainer Beach was just
almost baiting them to throw it, like go ahead, try
us and didn't work out very well.

Speaker 3 (01:27:08):
And we saw when when Edmunds Woodway started to press
at the end of the game, which is something they
really didn't want to do, but you kind of have
to do when you're down fifteen with five minutes left
to go in the game, and Rainer Beach would throw
a lazy pass and Edmunds Woodway just couldn't get there.
And I was thinking, oh, if that was Beach, that
was gone, that was Beach that was gone and Edwards
Woodwag just couldn't quite get there with the foot speed.

Speaker 1 (01:27:26):
And that's the difference between sixty eight and forty eight.
That's right, that's right, Rainier Beach again state champions.

Speaker 3 (01:27:32):
But that being said, sixty eight forty eight does not
I mean, that does not indicate how this game went.

Speaker 2 (01:27:36):
No, no note at all.

Speaker 3 (01:27:37):
I mean, people they in history, you'll go down and say,
oh you oh Edmonds Woodway got blown out by Rainder Beach.

Speaker 4 (01:27:42):
Not in the case at all. They did not get
blown out. This was a game until about four or
five minutes left to go.

Speaker 1 (01:27:47):
And I can tell you right now, and I talked
to a lot of the members of this community last night.
They're not holding their heads down right now. I mean
they understand that they made history for their team this season.
And we always we all kind of joke about it
up and essco we're always talking about Because I cover
all the Stahomish County teams, your best bet at getting
a state championship is almost in the four A because
three A kind of belongs to Metro, it belongs to

(01:28:09):
the Tacoma teams, and every once in a while Auburn
sneaks in there or somebody like that. But to come
into this dome, and we've seen some great Westco teams
come down here, Wesco has not had a team, a
boys team play in the Tacoma Dome in the state
title game in ten years, eleven years.

Speaker 2 (01:28:24):
I take that back. It was Jackson High School. They
lost to Curtis that night.

Speaker 1 (01:28:27):
So for them to get here and do what no
other team in Stahomish County has been able to do
in over a decade, it's outstanding. And so I think, again,
this one's gonna sting a little bit for the time being.
But I think when people start to look back on it,
when people up in Stahomish County talk about some of
the all time great teams, they're gonna mention the twenty
twenty four to twenty five Edmunds Waway Warriors. They're really
gonna have a lot to say about Cameron Hyatt. He

(01:28:48):
isn't going to be forgotten about any time.

Speaker 4 (01:28:49):
So one of the great players in Westco history.

Speaker 3 (01:28:51):
And you raise a good point about you know, playing
in you know the c king where you've got to
take care, you know, just to get into state you
got to get through Metrow.

Speaker 4 (01:28:58):
That's very, very difficult.

Speaker 3 (01:28:59):
That's fortunately where I played when I was in high
school and when I started coaching, we were in three
eight and in the c King you had to beat
the KINGKO and the Metro just to get into the
state tournament. Very difficult. Then we went to four eight
and it was like, oh, how about this. You know,
we're making the state tournaments now. I don't know if
we're any better, but we're making state tournaments now because
we're not going against We're not gonna get at Beach
and Oday in the district the loser out game.

Speaker 14 (01:29:21):
Right.

Speaker 2 (01:29:21):
It's tough.

Speaker 1 (01:29:21):
It's tough, and everybody always wants to complain about, well,
the seeding and committees are giving too much credence to Metro.
They're they're rewarding, they're rewarding them because they win the
tournament every year.

Speaker 4 (01:29:32):
Well yeah, and I like I like that they have
the RPI.

Speaker 3 (01:29:35):
That's that's fabulous and it works for college basketball, and
it's why, you know, it's it's why you're gonna see
the SEC get you know, thirteen teams in the NC
DOUA Tournament're gonna see the Big ten women get thirteen
teams in the NCAA tournament because they deserve thirteen thirteen games.

Speaker 2 (01:29:48):
That are very worthy of it. Absolutely so well, this
has been a lot of fun. I know you got
to get ready for the next game.

Speaker 1 (01:29:52):
Run.

Speaker 2 (01:29:52):
I know we got two games still. Don't go anywhere, guys.

Speaker 4 (01:29:55):
We've got Girls Action, the Girls four A, and then
we got the Boys four. It's gonna be fabulous.

Speaker 1 (01:30:00):
And if I'm remembering correctly, correct me if I'm wrong,
but I think the number eight seeds Sumner beat number
one Davis last week.

Speaker 2 (01:30:06):
That's right.

Speaker 4 (01:30:06):
This should be a very good another upset.

Speaker 1 (01:30:08):
Who knows stay tuned well again final score here, Rainier
Beach sixty eight, Edmunds, What a way forty eight, Dick Fane.
This has been a pleasure.

Speaker 4 (01:30:14):
Thank you being awesome man, so fun.

Speaker 1 (01:30:16):
Appreciate you doing this with me and let me join along.
And what a great game it was, so you enjoyed
the next two games coming up. But again, Rainer Beach
sixty eight, Edmonds, what a way forty eight. We will
sign out for a few moments and then come right
back and have you do the pregame show.

Speaker 2 (01:30:29):
Who do you got the game with?

Speaker 3 (01:30:30):
I've got Mount rain your basketball coach, Brandon Horseman the evening.
So now put a couple of rams on the on
the on the call.

Speaker 1 (01:30:36):
Love it so you guys enjoy every moment of that.
So we'll sign off right now. You're listening to the
twenty twenty five WIAA Geesa Credit Union State Basketball Championships
on Sports Radio nine fifty KJR. I want to give
a shout out to Chris Kid back in the studio,
so thank you for everything he's doing there.

Speaker 2 (01:30:51):
So I'm signing off.

Speaker 1 (01:30:52):
This is Steve Willet's good night, and enjoy the rest
of the evening and enjoyed Dick Fane coming at you
with the next game.
