Speaker 1 (00:00):
And good afternoon, and welcome from the Tacoma Dome. It
is the twenty twenty five Hardwood Classic, and welcome to
the twenty twenty five WIAA Geesa Credit Union State Basketball Championships.
Game one out of four games being broadcasted right here
on KGr today. It is the girls three A state
title and we are just about ready for tip off.
(00:21):
The undefeated Central Valley Bears coming into this game with
a twenty six and o record. They're six times state champs,
looking to make it number seven here and they've had
a pretty nice run so far this season again, have
not lost a single game, taking on the Lakeside Lions
from in Seattle, a five time champion.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
The champion though that hasn't won, says two thousand and three.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
They're twenty five and four and we are ready to
go as the ball dansis Williams here in just a moment,
My name is Steve Willits and basketball being played here
in the giant wood shed right off of I five
and Tacoma Central Valley passing the ball around nicely, twelve
footer floated up and in that was Keana Gosne, five
foot seven senior guard and Central Valley gets on the
(01:03):
board first. Let's go ahead and get you the starters
here as play resumes, Lakeside going from our left to
our right, wearing the road maroon uniforms, and they're doing
a nice job of passing the ball around fifteen foot
or from the corner of the free throw line.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Has missed.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
Shot was put up by number twenty four. That was
Lily Brown. And here comes Central Valley the other way.
We do promise we'll get you those lineups here in
just a moment. Central Valley wearing the home white uniforms,
light blue stripes down the side, the bears written across
the chest. Players passing it around right now. Number eleven
Eden Sanders a five foot eight guards. She's going to
(01:39):
Western Washington. Brinn mcgoy, you're gonna hear that name a
lot today. She just scores her first bucket of the day.
She scores her first points. She is a six foot.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Three senior forward. The other starters.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Number thirteen is Aspen Henry, She's a five to nine junior.
We already mentioned Keona Gosney. Gabby Wilson wears the number
twenty five. She is a five foot sixth senior guard
and we'll get your lakeside here in just a second.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
They're wearing the maroon.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Shot from six feet out misses. That was their senior
star player and will it Chin another shot missed, passed
over here right in front of us. It's our computer
here out of bounds. As Central Valley turns it over,
you're gonna hear will it Chin's name a lot too.
She is a senior guard. She's heading to Cornell University.
Only senior that's really been playing much during the tournament.
(02:29):
They've got two seniors on their entire team. Helena Christopholis
is a freshman point guard.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
And there you go.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Speaking of Helena Christopholis, she connects on a nine footer
from the right side.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
It's good.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Envy Batilla is warning the number twenty one. She's a sophomore.
Lily Brown is a point guarden where it's no. Number
twenty four. She's a junior. Kaliah Woodard is one of
the number thirty three and she's a sophomore. Into the lane,
go CV. They put up a six foot shot.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
It is missed.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
That was number eleven, eating sand Or put up the
shot Chin on the other end. Finally, we're gonna go
ahead and introduce Francis Williams, your chin, missus. Anate footer
from the left side, rebounded by mcgoy. She goes the
other way right now, A four to two score here
early Central Valley, five thirty to two to go, first quarter,
a play. Francis Williams, once upon a time, coached right
(03:20):
here in this building. He won the state championship in
nineteen eighty eight coaching for Rainier Beach. Certainly not a
stranger to the state of basketball in the area. And
McCoy puts up a shot, gets it to go, but
she was called for traveling before the ball goes in
turnover to lakeside and Francis, first of all, welcome, glad
to finally have you here. We got rolling pretty quick,
so thanks for your patience there.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Oh problem, Thank you great glad to be here, a
great time of year.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
You're no stranger to a big game like this. As
another turnover stolen initially it's by number thirtyelp on the play,
our first whistle for a foul, and it comes two
fifty one into the ballgame, and that's gonna turn the
ball right over to Central Valley, right in front of
US year, Francis, you can tell the nerves are kind
of still in there right now. We've seen multiple misshots already.
(04:07):
Both these teams often seems to be flowing, it's just
not the ball's not going in.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
Yeah, well, well, CEV with the chance to have the
perfect season. They've pretty much really not been challenged in
this in this tournament to this point. But you see
both teams that you said a little bit nervous, but
we'll see them both start playing to their to their.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Byway.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Brit McCoy with a six footer along the baseline a minute,
she got that to go and then a steal as
they come up the floor, stolen by Keana Gosney. She
goes hard to the basket, she's gonna be fouled, and
she will head to the free throw on our first
free throws of the game, coming up with Central Valley
sixty two. And yeah, they're striving for perfection, don't get it.
Just to do that very often, it's tough to do.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
But we'll see them start to play to their potential,
settle down a little bit, get get rid of the nerves.
I mean, this is a great stage to be on
with a golden opportunity with two very storied basketball programs
here in the state of Washington.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Hits the first free throw, by the way, the two
fouls on lakeside here early, and she hits the second
one as well. She now has four two fouls coming
from two different players. Christophelis has one Brown the other
Central Valley yet to commit a fallul.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
It's now eight to two.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
CEV who up until getting to the Tacoma Dome and
there's a block by mcgoy as Christophalis tried to go
to the hoop haard and mcgoy says, I don't think
so sends it the other way.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Here comes CEV Gosney into the key, a.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Little play up and down under for Satner and she
gets it to go and is tended to CEV, jumping
out to an eight point lead with four sixteen to go.
We had a thirty second time that we'll take a
quick break. You're listening to the twenty twenty five WIAA

Speaker 2 (06:27):
But man, here we go.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
On's he in Central Valley with a ten to two lead.
Bryn McCoy six foot two, new player to Central Valley.
But it's not just her on this team.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Isn't.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
No, it really is. And I've been impressed with their
balance all week. They really have. They have good shooters,
they have good ball handling. They don't have to specifically
just go to mcgoy for scoring. And when number twenty
four drake the mee bow comes into the game. Keep
your be aware of her because I think when she
comes in the game for Central Valley to get better.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Definitely Clia Woodward by the way, or what are just
hitting the three ball in the corner for Lake Side
pulls the defis down to five. It's now a ten
to five ball game. CV on the other side, shot
along the right baseline, missed, scramble for the ball, will
it chin coming away with it and Lakeside looking.
Speaker 4 (07:12):
To push on the other end, and Lakeside scores on
one end and the defensively, they make a switch and
goes on just trying to break the rhythm of Central
Valley because they were rolling offensively.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
Got to make some changes every once in a while
if it's not working. If it's not working, it's gonna
needs to be fixed. Christopheolis goes to the hoof, puts
up a six footer along the right side and misses
it rebound to Central Valley. Here they come pushing on
the other end. Ten to five score. Central Valley bears
up with three h seven to go in the first quarter,
doing a nice job of passing the ball around. Mcgoy
(07:40):
wants to show her three point skills, miss is it
in the corner. However, the offensive board comes down into
teammates eaton Sanders hands and then we're gonna get a
held ball position arrow.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
It's a lakeside yep, and Sanders always around the basketball,
but the Lakeside crew not. They don't have a lot
of size, but they're very scrappy. They're very quick to
the basketball as well, and they're pretty tenate just on
the defensive end. Anytime the ball is loose, they're going
to be around it.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Sander, the Greater Spokane League's defensive player of the Year,
learned that last night and we're seeing why right there,
and as a matter of fact, comes up with a
steel there that was forced by one of her teammates.
Doesn't have the numbers, but she passes down underneath anyway,
balls being passed around and kicked back out. Sebe's gonna
try to reset right side shot on the wing. Three
ball up and missed shot was put up by number
(08:25):
twenty three Gosney, and we're gonna get our first foul
of the game called on central Valley and that's mcgoy
right there.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Her first Well, they got it for going over the back.
Speaker 4 (08:36):
I mean, she's she's six y three, has a used
advantage over everyone out there, and I thought she did
a great job actually of tipping the ball to herself.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
Sometimes that works against them when the referee see them
just playing over the back. Even if they don't get him,
they almost get penalized for.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Being tall right over the back is not a foul
on the back on.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
The back Indeed, Lake Stevens or lakes Lakeside slittered with
a ball up on top, tries to throw it into
the late. Nicely donec shot there by Lily Brown. She
misses it, but they're gonna get contact there and Lily
Brown will go to the free throw line looking for
her first points of the evening or afternoon. I guess
gotta get used to the afternoon thing here.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
We're not playing a night game yet.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
Are we sure? But a nice job by Lily Brown
on that back cut.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
Great pressure by CB out on the perimeter, but Lilly
Brown back cuts it and gets her shot from the
free throw line.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Makes the first one, makes it a ten to six game.
She can get this one in here, which she throws
it up and does. Means the Lakeside now on a
five zero run and just when it looked like Central
Valley might be trying to pull away early Lake Site says,
not so fast. We have a little something here. There's
a reason why we're twenty five and four. Both of
these teams no strangers to play in championship games. So however,
(09:46):
it's been a while for both of them. Right now
by their own standards, nice pass down low, they're up
and in as Gabby Wilson goes cutting towards the hoop
on the left side and she gets the lamp to
make antel game.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
And again name Wilson is the point guard.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
But all of the CV players, they are all really strong.
They play physically and can do do good things around
the basket.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Indeed, Lily Brown missus a twelve footer, Brinn mcgoy, brings
it down. Mcgoy, who was playing at Colfax High School
the first two years of her career, won a state
championship there, played in another one. Transferred this season up
to Central Valley High School. And we're gonna get steps called.
Dan Sander made the basket, However, they say she shuffled
(10:29):
the feet beforehand. That's the second time now we've seen
Central Valley make a basket and yet get called back
for the traveling violation and.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
With mcgoy our state's latest McDonald's all American. Yeah, and
when you watch her play, she's very skilled, knows how
to use her size. He has a great touch from outside,
great from the foul line, beautiful footwork, has a high
at Basketball IQ.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
So you see why she is so highly rated.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
And you know what she's She had a foot injury
last year. I think she got hurt at Hoopfest and Spokane.
And there are people that know her game much better
than we do over here on the West Side that say.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
He's not playing at full strength right now.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
Yeah, which is kind of scary, right because here they
are in the state championship game. This is the Central
Valley team, by the way, that hasn't been in the
dome in five years, which it is hard to believe
because a few years ago they were winning championships. It
seemed like every other year or every year sometimes, like
I said, six time state champions. But it's been a
few years now. Lakeside hasn't won one since twenty three.
Ball was blocked there as Lily Brown went to the
(11:23):
hoop Hard. Central Valley's number thirty two Olivia Patchkowski, who
came in during the last break, gets on the stat sheet.
Wilson fakes a shot there, kicks it over to the corner.
Nice job distributing the ball and working it around, and
we're gonna get some hard contact right underneath the hoop.
Willi Schinn, the Chin, the lakeside player, came away with
the ball. But they're gonna say she got a little
(11:44):
contact while she was trying to come away with us.
So she picks up her first foul.
Speaker 4 (11:47):
And you gotta love the ball moving by Central Valley.
That time, every player on their team touched the basketball
and the ball never hit the floor.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Chin, by the way, going to Cornell, was the star
of yesterday's game when they feed to North Thurston to
get into this game. Then won by two, and she
was filed with two point eight seconds to go. Not
an easy place to be right when you're in the
under the big bright lights, and she made both of
her free throws to punch the tickets, so to speak.
Nice job again by CV, everybody's touching the ball, it seems.
(12:16):
Wilson into the key kicks it back out. That's Grace
Lansphere who came into the game. Also during the last break,
touching it for a minute, kicks it over to number
twenty three, Gosney fumbles the ball, picks it up, tries
to put it back in that they're going to say
double dribble.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
Well, you like the way that they're attacking the zone.
Speaker 4 (12:32):
They're trying to find some gaps to get into those
seams to get to the basket against this Lakeside zone,
but been a little careless with the basketball.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
That's like the third turnover that they've had in trying
to be on the attack.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
So credit to Lakeside for what they're doing, or is
that more of a CV just needed to make it
a go.
Speaker 4 (12:47):
They were down early in that time out that Lakeside
called just again to change the momentum. Let's give them
a different look defensively, and they'd held them to two points.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
That since that point in the game seems to have worked.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
We're down to six seconds to go in the first quarter.
Here Chin into the lane, missus, it falls, bat it around,
Woodard comes up with that reverse lap and it almost
goes in, falls off the rim, and we are through
one quarter of play. Central Valley leading Lakeside. Here in
the three eight girls State championship game. We'll take a break.
Speaker 2 (13:15):

Speaker 2 (14:30):
And here we go.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
Second quarter of action is now underway girls three, a
state championship game, Central Valley leading Lakeside by a score
of twelve to seven. Central Valley going to our left.
We're in the white uniforms. They've got the ball first
to begin the second quarter, long three from the corner,
drains it from the right side. That's Aspen Henry her
(14:51):
first bucket of the game. Now at fifteen to seven lead,
that's Central Valley. It matches their largest lead of the game.
Speaker 4 (14:58):
Well Lakeside state and is own to where they're gonna
be vulnerables in the corners. And that's a good looking
shot for Central Valley by Aspen.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
To get a three of her own. She misses it.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
A little bit of a tangle there between a couple
of the players down load. They're gonna say hell ball,
which goes right back to Lakeside. By the way, the
coaches for Central Valley head coach Jason Wilson believe this
is his fourth year. Now we'll mention some of his
assistants here in just a minute. As Christophelis goes hard
and through the lane, puts it up, bounces off the back,
(15:27):
iron comes off, mcgoy grabs it. Central Valley's gonna bring
it up the floor. Now he's assisted by Kate Sam's
and Jay Hilton.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
Again.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
When he took over this team, they'd won the state
championship in twenty twenty, had a couple of lean years
by their own standards. One year even they were five hundred.
Finally got back to the Dome the share as an
undefeated team. Christopholis goes hard and through the lane, and
she's gonna miss the shot, but draw contact. She'll go
to the free throw line. By the way, your lakeside
head coach, and name that a lot of people probably
(15:56):
know around here. Mia Agustavo Fisher, pretty good ballplayer back
in her day. UCSB took the Gauchos to the suites.
Augustavo Fisher, University of Washington, I believe all Pac ten
player for a couple of years. Was also an assistant
coach with him for a while. So they're coaching the
team together along with Pete Darmone first free throw is
(16:20):
missed by Christopheless. She makes the second one, making it
a fifteen to eight ball game, and now they're pressuring
in the backcourt for the first time tonight, Francis well.
Speaker 4 (16:28):
The first time they've had a chance to really set
their defense off the main free throw and again you're
just trying to give c'd be something different to try
to change the temple of the game. This time they've
made them use a lot of the shot clock. So
now there's only ten seconds left from the shot clock
and they've got to get going here offensively.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Yea, it broke the press, but now they're having trouble
getting anything going down to four into the lane. Sander
has it along the left side underhand, Scoop shot, misses
it right up the very last second, but gets her
own rebound after the ball bounces off the floor, and
all little assistan by the official, there's pass one off him.
Sander into the lane gets denied and blocked, and I
think we're gonna get a whistle.
Speaker 4 (17:06):
Here is Will scouting by Lakeside, because she's always wanting
to come back to that left hand. She's always gonna
come back to the left hand. And they've done a
great job a Lakeside of taking that away from Eaton Sander.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
I'll tell you what Chin now with two fouls, she
is definitely the leader of this team when you watch
them on the floor again. The only senior that's out
on the floor as mcgoy now looks like she's gonna
get a breather for a moment as checking back into
the game is number twenty five Gabby Wilson.
Speaker 4 (17:37):
Yeah, Lakeside can't afford to have Chin off the floor.
I mean, she's just too valuable. She does so much
for them, handling the ball, scoring, leading the defense, getting
on the glass. I mean, she does everything, and if
she comes out of the game, it really takes away
from what Lakeside would have game plan wise.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
Yeah, Sander missed the second free throw and certainly down
by eighth. They don't want to lose her out on
the floor right now. If anything, is Chin working the
ball right now. Nice job by Aspenham forces a turnover
and here comes CD up the other side. However, the
ball is going to be knocked out of bounds, and
with twenty seven left on the shot clock, Central Valley
just gets one of us here at the scores table,
yeat Central Valley mentioned it before, six time champions and
(18:19):
there's a nice little runner that goes in.
Speaker 4 (18:22):
This and this team they're very well prepared. I mean
you can see that there's not much that they haven't seen.
Layside went to the zone, is slowed them down momentarily,
but they got reorganized, got somebody to the high post,
and now are doing a great job of just attacking
it from the high post, getting looks from the corners.
Just again, they're balanced scoring and the players that they
have that can do things from multiple spots on the floor.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
It is really showing itself right now.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
That was Gabby Wilson that hit the shot, and then
just a moment ago Woodard on the other end missed
the three. However, Lasaid gets the rebound kicking it around
right now, working it around over to the right side,
driving baseline, kicking it out. Three ball up in the
air and it has missed and this time the rebound
is going to down into the hands of Sander. That
was Christophulis who missed the shot. Lily Brown doing a
(19:04):
nice job of drawing in the defense and then kicking
it out of However, she just couldn't quite hit the
open shot there. Eighteen to eight score Central Valley with
their first double digit lead of the game and looking
for more. Right now, fakes the three there and there
is Dre Dombo and they're gonna call her for an
offensive fl first time we mentioned her name of coming.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
Off the bench.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
Now they got lucky there because that could have been
the third foul on Chin. That was a close.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
One, not what they wanted to see earlier.
Speaker 3 (19:29):
But they avoid her getting that third foul.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
By the way, here's a nice luxury for Central Valley
to have, even as if you're not strong enough and undefeated.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
Right.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
Dombo was a freshman last year and was All League
on a team that didn't make it to State.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
Mind you gets hurt this year.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
She missed the majority of the season and just came
back recently, which is why she's coming off the bench.
So you got a former All League player as a
freshman last year coming off the bench, and your on
your undefeated team. So h yeah, the rich get richer,
so to speak.
Speaker 4 (19:57):
Right, yeaf, she came in yesterday and really sparked them
on on the offensive. En She's very athletic, very aggressive,
good on the glass. It's a good all around player.
You can see why she was All League.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
Nice job getting into the lane there.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
That's number twenty four Lily Brown, and she's gonna draw
a contact as she gets in there, driving right along
the left side of the key, kind of powered her
way through. They're gonna call that fell and Aspen Henry.
It's her first. It is the third team fell on
Central Valley. And keep in mind we did switch the
rules not so long ago. Five foulsand the quarter and
(20:29):
you're into the double bonus already, four twenty one to
go here in the first or second quarter. Rather, Batia
getting into the lane, flips up a shot and misses it.
Sander rushes over there and grabs it, and here comes
Central Valley one more time.
Speaker 4 (20:46):
It's another luxury that Central Valley has. All of these
young ladies can handle the basketball.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
Yeah, they talk about Sanders defensive game. I've watched your
passing game and outstanding three point shot by Henry. She
misses it, it rattles around, coming down with it is lit
Brown for Lakeside. She looks to push into the lane,
goes up with double coverage there and it's blocked and
guess who. Sander, the defensive juggernaut comes away with the
block and the ball. Central Valley pushing on the other side.
(21:12):
Right now, Henry throws it over to Gosney works the
ball over into the right side. Wilson with a runner.
They're gonna say offensive foul. She got the ball to
go in. They're gonna say she made a little too
much contact there. A nice job by Lakeside to draw
the foul.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (21:29):
Another another close bank bank play where that could have
gone either way.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
We got a little conference going on her hand. Oh,
we got a little uh oh, we got a little
garbage on the floor, Francis, I can see you trying
to draw guard direct traffic.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
What is he pointing out there?
Speaker 4 (21:50):
Fortunately, we had some people that throw some debris out
on the on the floor because of the back hall.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
Oh, I didn't even notice that.
Speaker 4 (21:57):
We don't want any any players to uh to injure themselves.
So now we're getting a little maintenance done.
Speaker 1 (22:02):
Oh okay. I was wondering what's going on there? I
saw you and another guy pointing at the floor, and
I thought, I spot there. What now they're trying to
push everything off with a broom there. So three point
thirty three to go here in the second quarter, just
wrapping up the maintenance, if you will, that we're taking
place on the floor and we're ready to go once
segain Lake's side underneath throwing basket, gonna send the ball
(22:24):
in here. They come up down by ten three eight
Girls State Championship game. Christophels, the freshman kicks it over
to Chin a little two person game there as she
now goes from right to left into the lane, flips
it up and she gets it to go. Nicely done
by the freshman there.
Speaker 3 (22:43):
If she really has a knack for scoring.
Speaker 4 (22:45):
She's been doing that all season in the Metro League
and has done the same thing here this week.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
And guess who Eden Sander on the other end with.
Speaker 3 (22:52):
A three ball Lefty She's money.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
Says, I'll take your two, and I'll answer with a three.
And now it's a twenty one to ten Central Valley lead.
Central Valley came into the Tacoma Dome the first twenty
four games of the season. They won by double digits
each and every game. And there's a three ball by Lakeside.
Sophia and David getting her name called for the first
time today, comes off the bench and drains a three
(23:17):
twenty one thirteen Lakeside, who got challenged a little bit
here this week or Central Valley rather, there's a turnover
Lakeside coming up. Beat Kennewick forty five to thirty seven,
and that game was closer than the score indicates. And
then they beat four time defending state champion Garfield fifty
(23:38):
one forty nine. Garfield had a chance to tie that
game up late. Chin goes hard on the left side
and misses it, gets her own board, floats it back up.
This one rolls right off and she slaps her hands,
knowing she had a good look, not happy with herself
for missing that one. Central Valley comes on over on
the other side of the floor with the ball down
at the two minute mark. Here to go first half,
twenty one to thirteen. Score once again, CV making sure
(24:01):
everybody gets involved, working the ball over to the left.
Now back at center, Gosney running the point. Wilson's gonna
put up a three on the left side, and she
hits it. Yaddy, Wilson. She's got seven now and.
Speaker 4 (24:15):
Again the balance scoring every one on the floor. For
these guys for Central Valley, they can all shoot, they
can all handle the ball, and offensively they're very well oiled.
Speaker 1 (24:23):
Five different players have scored up for them. Woodard with
that three ball on the right side, leaves it a
little bit short rebound to Aspen Henry and Cev wasting
no time pushing it right back down the floor, setting
up again. Wilson kicks it over to Henry over into
the left corner. Now that's Sander and again, like you
(24:43):
mentioned before, Francis at least four players touching it almost
every possession.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
Yeah, they really move a well.
Speaker 4 (24:49):
They know where they like to have the ball on
the floor, and they've been getting the ball into the
paint every single time against the lakeside zone and that
has been creating great, easy opportunities and great looks for them.
Speaker 1 (25:00):
Gosney got tied up as she tried to go into
the lane with six seconds to go, held ball possession
arrow for central Valley. However, the shot clock does not
get reset when you have the possession arrow play into
account here, so they've got six seconds to put up
a shot. However, they're gonna inbound it from right underneath
the hoop here, kick it way out on top of
it at Goosnie, I don't even know if she knows
about the shot clock.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
She does.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
She shoots a twenty five footer hits off the back,
iron bounces out and Sophia David will come down with
the rebound for lakeside. Under a minute to go. Chin
for three and barely catches the iron there. Ball bounces
around and I think we're gonna have our referee conference
here is both body out from the Lions and Sander
(25:41):
from the Bears were going for it. Initially they were
signaling it was central valley ball. They got the call right.
It was definitely Sanders from the angle that we have here.
That was definitely the right call for him to overturn it,
them to confer.
Speaker 3 (25:54):
Let's get the call right.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
Good job and we always appreciate that.
Speaker 1 (25:57):
And good officiating staff here today as well, Forrest McGinnis,
Todd Bitterman, and Josh Lloyd calling the game. Chin gets
into the lane, she misses a six footer. Nice job
by her teammate there, Lily Brown making sure that ball
wasn't gonna go out of bounds and gets it right
back to her shot clock at twenty five.
Speaker 2 (26:13):
Game pluck.
Speaker 1 (26:14):
At thirty three, Brown for a three on the right wing.
She misses it, rebound there by Sophia David. She looks
to push he's gonna try to go coast to coast,
gets contact, misses the shot, but she's gonna go to
the free throw line with twenty four point nine left.
Speaker 4 (26:27):
And man, she showed some great speed by pulling that
rebound down and she was off and running.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:34):
First, I kind of thought, well, she wants to push
a little bit. I thought she's gonna push all the way.
Speaker 4 (26:38):
She ran right, she ran right by them. I'm hoping
we'll see her in the spring doing some track.
Speaker 1 (26:42):
Yeah, no, kidding, right, And she hits the first free throw.
Like I said, coming in off the bench, she's doing
a nice job thus far.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
And we're gonna get a.
Speaker 1 (26:56):
And I said, I met Keona Gosney. That's a team there,
so the wrong twenty three. Gosti hits the first free throw,
misses the second. It goes in and out. Rebound's gonna
come down to lakeside. Shot clock turned off twenty five
thirteen lead for Central Valley. They averaged sixty eight points
per game. Don't need it here so far this afternoon.
(27:18):
Chin into the lane with ten seconds to go, puts
up the shot, leaves it a little short rebound for Henry.
Clock at four three Gosti brings over the center line,
floats one up underhand from about thirteen feet out, can't
get it to go. And we are through the first
half of play Central Valley trying to win their seventh
state championship, trying to remain undefeated, and so far, so
(27:40):
good for them.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
They lead twenty five to thirteen, and we're gonna take
a break. Right now.
Speaker 1 (27:44):

Speaker 1 (31:23):
And welcome back to the twenty twenty five Hardwood Classic
here at the Tacoma Dome game number one of four
state championship games coming up today and you'll hear all
of the action right here on KJR. Steve will It's
along with Francis Williams. First half here in the Tacoma
Doome to three to eight girls State championship game. We
think the score is twenty five to thirteen. That's what
(31:44):
the scoreboard shows. They just handed us the official stats.
It says twenty six thirteen. It really doesn't matter at
this point the way Central Valley's playing, But francis the
thing that jumps out the most to me when they
just handed out the statuet a minute ago. Central Valley
nine for seventeen from the field, Lake's side four for
twenty seven.
Speaker 4 (32:02):
Ye well, if you look at that, they've got up
twenty seven shots, they have seven offensive.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
Rebound which you should feel good about, and.
Speaker 3 (32:09):
Central Valley has eight turnovers.
Speaker 4 (32:12):
So the numbers would suggest that if they were just
to take advantage of some of the opportunities that they've had,
that there would be a smaller deficit. But they've only
made four field goals in twenty seven attempts, and so
there you see where the deficit comes is. They just
have not been able to make a shot, and they're
you know, two for eighteen on twos and two for
nine on threes.
Speaker 1 (32:32):
You've coached the state championship game before. You weren't down
at by twelve and a half.
Speaker 3 (32:36):
I don't believe, but we were not.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
If you're Augustavo Fisher, what are you telling your team
right now?
Speaker 4 (32:42):
Well, you know they've they've had some good looks. They
just have not been able to get them to drop. Now,
will A Chin, we have to start with her. She's
zero for nine, yeah, from the field, and they can't
win without her scoring.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
They need her really to do everything.
Speaker 4 (32:56):
So you would like to think that she's not going
to go oh for nine in the second half and
she's going to be more successful.
Speaker 3 (33:01):
The defense isn't the problem.
Speaker 4 (33:02):
They've done a good job defensively by going into the
zone and then limiting them to one shot, but they've
just got to get some shots to go into the
basketball central Valley.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
The thing that I notice here too is obviously mcgoy
gets so much of the attention being that she's the
five star player. We talked about it during the first half.
They're not one dimensional and we're seeing it already here.
You've got five different players, but at least three or
more points here out of their twenty five.
Speaker 4 (33:25):
That's not bad, yes, And I just I love the
fact that when Lakeside did go to the zone, they
took Gabby Wilson their point guard and they moved her
to the high post. And when they went to the
high post, it just really opened up things for everyone.
So when they jumped out to the eighteen to eight
league that they had to stretch it out a little
bit and just be able to again use the balance
scoring that they have, I mean, just the versatility that
(33:47):
they have with their players, and putting her at the
high post was a big change for Central Valley.
Speaker 1 (33:52):
Oh, definitely, we're gonna take a break right now. We've
got a few more minutes left in half time. Maybe
we'll even get Francis's thoughts on the three boys game
that we're gonna be broadcasting here at five o'clock Edmunds
Woodway versus Rainer Beach Beach Team. I think you know
fairly well, So we'll talk about that when we come back.
But again, right now, we're gonna take another break. It
is Central Valley leading Lakeside twenty five at thirteen at
the half here of the three eight girls Championship game.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
And you're listening to the twenty twenty.
Speaker 1 (34:15):
Five WIAA Gezer Credit Union State Basketball Championships on nine
fifty KGr so how is your research going?
Speaker 11 (34:24):
Surprising? After I figured out the top rated TVs in
our price range, I went shopping for.
Speaker 8 (34:29):
Deals and who's the best.
Speaker 11 (34:31):
It wasn't the Internet, and it wasn't the Warehouse Club,
but it was Video Only. They had better deals on
the Samsung LG and the Sony TVs that got the
highest scores.
Speaker 8 (34:43):
Better than online and at the club.
Speaker 11 (34:45):
I know video Only beat them all, and now we
can afford an even better model for the same price.
My research really paid off if we buy it video
only exactly, otherwise we'll be sorry.

Being a teenager is tough.
Speaker 16 (35:25):
There's the constant pressure to be liked, endless, worrying about college,
cyber bullying, high expectations, all the negativity. There's no question
being a teenager is tough. And what do Washington's teens
do when they want to block out the noise and
clear their head. Research shows that teenagers who participate in
(35:47):
high school sports have lower stress levels, more confidence, and
greater self esteem. And then there's the biggest benefit of all.
Speaker 5 (35:55):
High school sports are fun.
Speaker 6 (35:57):
Not just fun, they're.
Speaker 3 (35:59):
A lot of fun.

Speaker 6 (36:06):

healthier future.

And welcome back to the twenty twenty five Hardwood Classic.
Speaker 2 (37:28):
Here at the Tacoma Dome. Steve Willitts along with Francis Williams.
Speaker 1 (37:32):
As we are just about ready to get the second
half of action underway, the Central Valley Bears leading the
Lakes Side Lions twenty five to thirteen. Let's give you
some of the individual scoring numbers. We talked about the
shooting percentages right before we went to break. Central Valley
being led by Gabby Wilson, the point guard. She's got
seven points, including two for two from two range and
(37:52):
one for one from three. Keana Gosnei and Eden Sander
each with six, Brin mcgoy with four, and Aspen Henry
had three. Looking over at lakeside the freshman Helena Christopholis
with five points, Sophia David with her one three ball
that she hit, Lily Brown has two, and Kalia Woodard
also hit a three ball and she has three. And
(38:13):
we are underway lakeside now, going from our right to
our left, down by twelve, and they're gonna handle the
ball first being pressured in the back court, finally getting
it across as will a Chin right back to Christophulis.
Speaker 2 (38:25):
And these two are really gonna need to get going.
Speaker 3 (38:27):
Yes they will.
Speaker 4 (38:28):
And they both have got to be aware of the
fouls as well, because Christopolis and Chin both have two.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
Yeah, you cannot lose either one of those two if
you're gonna try to get back into this game. Five
to go on this shot clock throw on the left side.
Chin now with the ball into the lane behind her
back one second, does she get it off in time?
She does, and she hits it her first bucket of
the game, and it happens just as the shot clocks
is expiring, twenty five to fifteen.
Speaker 4 (38:53):
So she's well above her first half output. But that's
what we were looking for from her. We did not
expect her to go over nine. Again, No, we did not.
She's I don't think she's gonna know for nine very
often in her career. She's a fantastic ballplayer. Again, there's
a reason why she's going to Cornell next year. Working
the ball around here high post, McCoy has it, loses
it for a minute, Paul gets knocked away, but they're
(39:13):
gonna say offensive foul on mcgoy. Yeah, And she made
the mistake of putting the ball down in traffic. She
knows that she should turn and look opposite see what
the defense is doing. But you put it down in traffic.
And we talked about it earlier. The lakeside defense is pesky,
will always be there when the ball is put down.
Speaker 1 (39:30):
She looked a little bit shocked. She was looking around,
going he's out on me. She told me it was
away from the ball, lakeside down by ten, trying to
get it back into single digits. Chin's gonna set up
on top, being guarded very closely by Henry, slowing it
down here a bit dribbles over to her right, still
holding on the ball, waiting for a screen there, didn't
quite get it the way she wanted, kicks it out
(39:51):
on top. Brown with the ball, kicks it over to Batia.
Botya is gonna put up a left handed shot, and
she gets that one to fall from about eight feet
out right in the middle of the key. It's not
twenty five seventeen. Lake Side not going away yet. Ball
down load, Chin gets a foot on it. They're gonna
say it was kicked and it goes out of bounds.
That'll give Central Valley a new thirty. But lake Side
(40:13):
coming out here with a little purpose well.
Speaker 4 (40:15):
Lakeside shot nine threes in the first half and the
first two possessions of the second half in indication they were
going to put the ball on the deck and attack
the basket.
Speaker 1 (40:24):
By the way, Batia also a starter, also getting her
first points of the game. Your two starters, you'd like
to have more than zero from them in the first half,
and so far in two possessions, each of them getting
on the board six oh eh to go. Third quarter
twenty five to seventeen game, Central Valley, going over to
the left, kicking it out. Mcgoy trying to drive on
(40:44):
Chin and Chin might have hooked her there, and that's
gonna be three.
Speaker 4 (40:48):
Yeah, And that's a good job by mcgoy to just
she saw that she had the mismatch.
Speaker 3 (40:52):
It was a disadvantage there.
Speaker 4 (40:53):
Just put the ball in the deck, took it hard
to the basket and Chin got her arm hooked under
her arm and that's the third file.
Speaker 3 (40:58):
So we definitely have to pay attention to that.
Speaker 2 (41:00):
Yeah, they're gonna try to go right at her.
Speaker 1 (41:01):
I'm sure now, so six minutes even on the clock,
first team fell in the quarter for Lakeside. But more
importantly it is number three on Chin CV taking their
time to go up on top. She's gonna put up.
Speaker 2 (41:13):
A three, nothing.
Speaker 4 (41:15):
But the bottom of the netstiful, beautiful touch, great release,
high release, great rotation on the basketball.
Speaker 3 (41:22):
You see why she's a five star recruit.
Speaker 1 (41:24):
University of Washington likes the sound of that. Huh, six
for three and you got a little touch from the outside.
Here we go on the other side, Christoph wilis a
runner from the left side.
Speaker 2 (41:33):
She gets it to fall.
Speaker 1 (41:35):
She's on the board here in the second half, she
now has seven for the game, twenty eight to nineteen
score Lakeside, three possessions, three baskets, looking much more comfortable
in offense than they did in the first half. Ball down, low,
trip and fall, and we're gonna get some contact. Will
it be a shooting fowl? And yeah, who's that gonna
be on?
Speaker 2 (41:55):
Here?
Speaker 3 (41:55):
They called that on Chin. That's four on her.
Speaker 1 (41:57):
Oh my goodness, will it Chin? Your senior stand out
with four fouls? And you know what, they don't seem
to be going to put anybody else in right now.
They're gonna let her play it.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
They've got it.
Speaker 3 (42:12):
Well, well, we've talked about it.
Speaker 4 (42:13):
They can't afford to have her off the floor, and
you can see the coach is not gonna make a change,
So they're just gonna have to roll the dice and
leave her in.
Speaker 1 (42:21):
And they're trying to go right over to her side
right now, into the lane. Putting up the shot from
twelve feet out, rims around and falls out. That was
Gossney missing it. Chin comes away with it. Let's see
how protective she is of the fact that she's got
those fowls. Now decides not to drive into the lane,
ops to kick it out to one of her teammates
and they're gonna work it around here a little bit.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
Batia kicks it into the.
Speaker 1 (42:41):
Corner Woodard long two ball from the right side and
she drains it twenty eight to twenty one. Lakeside not
going anywhere right now. They're hanging around Woodard with five.
Speaker 5 (42:52):
Well.
Speaker 4 (42:52):
It's great to see her being a little bit more
aggressive on the offensive end. I thought earlier in the
week she had some shots that she turned down, but
she's getting those looks on them on the baseline and
being real aggressive and knocking them down today.
Speaker 1 (43:03):
Lakeside four field goals here in the half, four different
players getting one down there. As Wilson misses it, mcgoy
gets the rebound underneath the hoop, batted around and it's
gonna be batted out to Gosney kicks it over the
three ball up and it's gonna hit back iron and
go off. Chin started to fight for it. I think
she let go of and knowing that she was in
a little trouble there. That was Tombo who missed the three,
(43:25):
and Lakeside now with a chance to get even closer
here Christava with a runner and she draws contact. She's
going to head to the line for two more free
throw attempts.
Speaker 4 (43:33):
So every possession for Lakeside here in the second half
has been attacked, the basket off the dribble, and.
Speaker 1 (43:40):
That foul is going to be called on number thirteen.
Eden Sander. Sander fouled out yesterday with a few minutes
to go, and you could tell defensively they were not
the same without her, So obviously not the same concerns
that Lakeside has right now with a four foul player
out there, But nonetheless Sander somebody that'll keep an eye
on as Christofo Kershoffles misses the first free throw. Only
(44:06):
a freshman, And that's a name you know, that's synonymous
in the basketball community around here.
Speaker 4 (44:10):
Oh yeah, she's got a brother at Seattle University. And
actually I coached against her dad when I was at
Rayner Beach. Her dad was a player at Lakeside. She
actually made a buzzard beater in our gym to beat
us in our state championship year.
Speaker 1 (44:26):
I was good.
Speaker 2 (44:27):
That's like almost forty years ago, and.
Speaker 4 (44:28):
You still I talked to him in Baillevue a couple
of weeks ago, Dino Kustopholis, he was a good player.
Speaker 1 (44:34):
Coaches, never forget. Three ball up in the air, that's
off Wilson, She misses it and Lakeside coming away with
a rebound, Chin pushing it up. Lakeside down by six
right now. Keep in mind they were down by twelve
at halftime. They've already cut the deficit in half. I'm
gonna tried to do even more than that right now,
and Chin eight foot floater gets it to go. We
(44:56):
got a four point ball game with three twenty seven
to go in the third quarter.
Speaker 4 (45:00):
Well, great response by Lakeside here to start the second half,
and an even better response by Chen.
Speaker 1 (45:05):
And a timeout is called. Central Valley says, no, we've
seen enough. Head coach Jason Wilson says, let's take a
break and we'll do the same. Do not go anywhere.
We got ourselves a game. You're listening to the twenty
twenty five WIAA Geza Credit Union State Basketball Championships on

Speaker 17 (45:25):

(46:19):
You understand all your costs upfront called Starstar eight eight
eight and receive up to twenty five percent off your
twelve month contract. That's Starstar eight eight eight.
Speaker 2 (46:33):
And back to action here.
Speaker 1 (46:34):
Third quarter Central Valley who had a twelve point lead
at halftime. That lead has been cut down to twenty eight,
twenty four and a steal for Lakeside on Vi Botia
with the ball goes hard towards the basket, two players
tumbling towards the ground, Batia as well as number thirteen
ash Been Henry. They're gonna say Batya shuffled her feet
before the contact traveling violation turnover back to Central Valley,
(46:57):
And I would.
Speaker 4 (46:58):
Say that great job, because league by Batia, she's probably
the most improved player in the Metro League this year.
Speaker 2 (47:03):
Wow, that's saying something.
Speaker 4 (47:04):
She has really improved her game and has just really
done a lot of things to help get this Lakeside
team to this point. But in my opinion, maybe the best,
the most improved player in the league.
Speaker 1 (47:15):
Yeah, young player at that too, so only a sophomore
and looking pretty good out there. Right now, here comes
Sander with the ball over to the right side, being
pressured by Brown. They're gonna swing the ball back from
left to right. Four different players have touched at everybody
but mcgoy and they're trying to get hurt down low.
Right now, she's looking to post Upwoodard, shot clock down
to nine, joombo over to Wilson, download to mcgoy. Nice
(47:38):
pass over the top, gets part of the shot block.
They're gonna say it was tied up, held ball possession.
Arrow goes to Central Valley with only three seconds to
go in the shot clock.
Speaker 4 (47:49):
Now, I don't know if this is the undefeated season
kind of creeping into this equation year. But Central Valley
went away from what was getting them easy shots against
his own with the high post.
Speaker 1 (48:01):
And we're gonna get a shot clock violation. They inbounded
it to Sanders. Sanders swinging over to Gosney GHASTI put
up a desperation shot. I didn't see which Lakeside player
jumped out at her bit got a piece of it
and made it to where it was an airball shot.
So the shot clock goes down to zero. Lakeside down
by four, with the basketball two twenty five remaining. Here
in the third quarter, her stopfless goes all the way
(48:24):
from right to left. You're gonna pick up a screen
from chin in from Woodard, and they're gonna say she
carried the basketball going over to her right side.
Speaker 2 (48:33):
You don't see that one very oftimate.
Speaker 4 (48:34):
You don't, but you gotta understand what stopless when she
when she gets the ball, she's looking to score, she's
not looking to pass. So she's gonna put it on
the deck and try to try to get it there.
She's a very aggressive score, especially for a freshman.
Speaker 2 (48:46):
She does not play like a freshman.
Speaker 1 (48:48):
Yes, definitely anything and Cev bringing the ball up very slowly,
going over across the center line, gonna go away with
a ball up on top, being guarded by Brown, goes
over to her right, tries to swing the ball over
to the and there's Botia again coming up with a
steel body that brings it up herself down the floor,
kicks the ball back to Chin a little spin move
there back to Bodia bodya dribbling into the lane, kicks
(49:12):
it out to the right side. Woodard going into the
corner for Brown and now Chin with the basketball thirteen
to go on the shot clock. Nice, no look past
body A takes a shot gets felled.
Speaker 2 (49:23):
On the play and that might have been the pass
of the game right there.
Speaker 4 (49:26):
You like the patients, You like the movement, and you
see they get the ball into their leader and the
chant hand and she's got great vision, the great bounce
pass on the back cut by Botia, got a chance
to cut it to.
Speaker 1 (49:36):
Tubes Dumbo picking up her third foul by the way,
shooting foul so Botia at the line shoots a little
bit of a flat ball there that rolls off the
back iron. So she misses the first attempt and we're
gonna get a substitution here is mcgoy's gonna go to
the bench for a quick breathe there one forty two
to go in the quarter. It might be your best
(49:57):
chance to get her rested up there, little bit one
more shot from Bodia and she misses both of them.
Those were two huge misses, so Lakeside still trailing by
four with one thirty eight to go here in the.
Speaker 4 (50:10):
Third quarter, Lakeside stays in the zone. They've extended to
put a little pressure on the ball handlers out front.
Speaker 1 (50:17):
And CB with another turnover that was just on them,
a pass that got away from number twenty five Gabby Wilson,
and with one thirty three to go here Lakeside with
the ball by the way. If you're a fan of

Willa Chin is not oh for eight anymore. She's seving
(51:00):
herself a pretty nice quarter here, six points, Lakeside pulls
the deficit down to two. And on the other end,
driving baseline there, that was number twenty four, Drea Dumbo,
she's gonna draw contact.
Speaker 3 (51:13):
Chin just filed out.
Speaker 1 (51:15):
Oh my goodness, will it? Chin has fouled out with
fifty eight seconds to go.
Speaker 2 (51:21):
In the third quarter. The senior has just played her
last moment for Lakeside.
Speaker 3 (51:29):
Wow, that's huge.
Speaker 2 (51:31):
Three of those fouls come in here in the third quarter.
Speaker 4 (51:33):
Yeah, and we knew that the coach was rolling the
dice leaving her in the game, but uh, that's a
big call.
Speaker 1 (51:41):
It's gonna be on the underclassmen from here on out.
Fifty eight seconds to go, it was a non shooting fowl.
So CV with the basketball the two point lead, there's
twenty five thirteen at the half. Wilson from eighteen feet out,
she misses it. Lakeside comes down with the rebound. Lakeside
has outscored Central Valley thirteen to three here in the
(52:02):
third quarter, and they could either tie or take the
lead right now. Unbelievable. You're gonna have to do it
without will it Chin though, Brown.
Speaker 2 (52:09):
Nice pass underneath water, lays it.
Speaker 3 (52:11):
Up and in.
Speaker 2 (52:12):
We are all tied up here at the Tacoma Dome.
Speaker 4 (52:16):
Well, if Lakeside pulls this off, this this will be miraculous, unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (52:21):
Twenty eight, twenty eight. Right now, what or who we
usually see getting the ball in the corner. She likes
to shoot outside. She went down low that time. They
needed it speaking a down low. CV kicks it in
and they're gonna swing it back out now Gostni with
the ball on the wing, they're down to seven on
the shot clock, spin move.
Speaker 2 (52:36):
She puts up a shot.
Speaker 1 (52:38):
It's off the backboard, and Lakeside has the basketball with
a chance to take the lead. However, the clock expires
and we are going to the fourth quarter. All tied
up with the three A girl state championship on the
line here today, you do not want to go anywhere.
This is gonna be a fun eight minutes coming up.
We'll take a break right now, Central Valley twenty eight

And we're back here at the twenty twenty five Hardwood Classic.
Here the WIAA Geezea Credit Union State Basketball Championship games,
the first of four, and we got a doozy going here.
Fourth quarter, just underway Lakeside and Central Valley Tide. Christopholas
hits a fourteen footer and Lakeside has come back from
thirteen down.
Speaker 2 (54:33):
To take the lead. The freshman coming up clutch.
Speaker 4 (54:36):
Well, which she has the boss. She's looking to score.
But you look at those third quarter stats. Lakeside in
the third quarter seventh to seven, and.
Speaker 2 (54:45):
We're gonna steal by Lakeside.
Speaker 1 (54:46):
It's Lily Brown coast to coast and she leaves it short.
She had an open look with nobody around her, and
she just flat out missed it. And then, as we
often see with high school sports, you missed that, and
you almost your adrenaline gets going and then immediately fouls.
Speaker 4 (55:04):
Yeah, so this is gonna be This is gonna be.
Speaker 3 (55:07):
Great test character for Central Valley.
Speaker 4 (55:09):
They got the perfect season here with an opportunity to
accomplish that. They were up by as much as thirteen.
They are now down by two.
Speaker 1 (55:18):
They've been outscored seventeen to three in the second half.
Right now, yes, and they had they almost went down
by four. Central Valley now down by two. They're gonna
try to go down low and they throw the ball
over the top and they get a break, or do they?
I thought, actually they threw it over the top of mcgo.
I thought for a moment Christophlus might have touched it.
They say, no, it's Lakeside basketball.
Speaker 4 (55:41):
So the first time we see Central Valley extend their
deepense with some backcourt pressure.
Speaker 1 (55:46):
And Lakeside does a nice job to break it there
as Brown brings it up Christophelis on the point again,
if you're just tuning in, will it chin star player
for Lakeside foul out of the game with fifty eight
seconds to go in the third quarter. They do not
have a single scene that has played a moment of
basketball here, and we're going to get a held ball possession.
Arrow goes to Central Valley. Brown went up in the
(56:06):
air and she got tied up all up there, and
unfortunately for her, the arrow was pointing the other way.
Six forty nine to go here. Lake set up by two.
Speaker 4 (56:14):
Good individual defense that time by CV. So they've got
to generate some offense here. Two points in the second
half so.
Speaker 1 (56:20):
Far undefeated Central Valley last one of state championship in
twenty twenty. That was the last time they were here
in the dome. And a foul is called and they're
going to go to the free throw line for two shots.
Speaker 2 (56:34):
Lakeside, by the way, five.
Speaker 1 (56:35):
Times state champs nineteen eighty nine, nineteen ninety, nineteen ninety two,
nineteen ninety four, and two thousand and three, twenty two
years since they've last.
Speaker 3 (56:44):
Sandy Sandy Snider.
Speaker 2 (56:45):
Sandy Schneider won all five of those.
Speaker 3 (56:47):
Yeah, yes, she was a great coach, came.
Speaker 1 (56:49):
Out of retirement a few years ago too and was
coaching again for a while. Free throw attempt up and
is missed, as that is Gabby Wilson at the line
and the Lakeside Faithful right behind us here. They're getting
fired up right now, and Wilson misses another one. Mcgoy
goes in hard, gets the rebound, goes to the deck
(57:11):
and let's see who they're gonna call the foul on
here for Lakeside, it looks like it's gonna be wooded,
and if that is the case it is, that'll be
only her first. However, Lakeside already at three fouls here
in the quarter, we still got six thirty three to go.
They go double bonus in two more and that'll be
for the remainder of the game. Inbound from right underneath
(57:33):
the hoop there, shot goes up. Mcgoy gets it, gets
her own rebound. They're gonna say she went over the
top and she gets called to the fowl. Brent mcgoy
with her third personal first team foul on Central Valley
here in the quarter, and with six thirty to go,
Lakeside ball again and Francis they're going right back to
the press.
Speaker 4 (57:50):
Yeah, and late Lakeside has done a great job of
just swarming her anytime she gets the ball. The closer
to the basket, Let's search a valley again, some backcourt pressure,
see if they can ugh Lakeside, who's in a great
offensive rhythm right now.
Speaker 1 (58:02):
Christophelus the freshman bringing it up, being guarded by Gabby Wilson,
kicking into the corner of the balls knocked out of bounds.
Seventeen to go on the shot clock.
Speaker 4 (58:13):
Well, a chan over there doing our best job to
help coach this team to a win.
Speaker 1 (58:18):
That's got to be rough for her, doesn't it, just
sitting there watching know and she's helpless and can't do anything.
Lakeside brings the ball back out on top, tend to
go on the shot clock. Bats yea with the ball
being guarded by Sander, goes up, Sander gets a hand
on him, maybe goes off the back iron, rims off
central valley, coming away with it. They're looking to push
and Bodia and Sander get tied up. They're gonna call
(58:39):
hell ball once again. A nice job by Bodia. As
the pass went over to Sanders, she met her right
as the ball was getting to her and tied her
up instantly. Sander, I think was kind of hoping for
a foul. She didn't get the call, and I think
it was a good call.
Speaker 3 (58:51):
What do you no?
Speaker 4 (58:51):
Just a lot of little fundamental mistakes of just not
knowing where the basketball is on the floor, turning. You
don't want to turn it, Look, don't turn and dribble.
Speaker 1 (59:00):
Central Valley still with only three points in the half,
with five forty nine to go, Central Valley dribbles that
one out of bounds. It goes off with Christopholis and
that's a turnover. Central Valley again averaging over sixty eight
points per game on the season, They've got three points
in the last ten minutes and eleven seconds.
Speaker 3 (59:16):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (59:18):
But on the Central Valley side of things, defensively, made
no type of adjustment to stop Lakeside, which is just
attacking them off the dribble and have been attacking them
relentlessly since the second half started. No type of defensive
adjustment at all.
Speaker 2 (59:33):
Sander.
Speaker 1 (59:33):
At the top of the key spin move, goes to
the hoop underhead Lamp missed it. Mcgoy gets the rebound,
puts it back up, gets foul, doesn't get the basket
to go, but she's gonna go to the free throw line.
Speaker 4 (59:45):
And she's had some good looks close to the basket
that she has not been able to convert.
Speaker 3 (59:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (59:51):
Yeah, She's another one that at any given moment, she
can almost just turn things on and she might hit
six or eight consecutively.
Speaker 2 (59:57):
Hits.
Speaker 1 (59:57):
The first free throw makes it up twenty nine to
thirty game. That's her eighth point of the game, and
she'll have one more attempt to try to tie it
up here with five twenty nine to go here in
the fourth quarter, State championship on the line, and that
one is good, and we are tied up thirty thirty
and we've got.
Speaker 2 (01:00:14):
A full time out.
Speaker 1 (01:00:15):
We're gonna take a break five twenty nine to go
to determine whether or not one of these teams can
win it in regulation and hold up the gold ball.

Speaker 1 (01:01:35):
To go here at the Tacomadome at the three A
Girls State Championship basketball game. Here is Steve Willets along
with Francis Williams bringing you all the actions. Central Valley
coming into the day undefeated, they were the favorites. They
were up by twelve at halftime, and Lakeside has come
storming back tie game with under five and a half
(01:01:55):
to go. Now Lakeside with the basketball, will it Chinn.
There's our senior player who's going to Cornell next year
has already filed out of the game. Lakeside just seems
to be the little engine that could. Christophlis the freshman,
drive stores of the hoop. And they're gonna say she
carried the ball once again, the second time she's been
called for that.
Speaker 3 (01:02:12):
She's getting a little anxious.
Speaker 4 (01:02:13):
She's they're running a nice player for her to get
the ball at the elbow where she could go to
her strong hand.
Speaker 3 (01:02:19):
But she's just getting a little anxious when she's putting
the ball on the floor. So not as twice that
they've called that. Carry on her.
Speaker 1 (01:02:25):
Now five eleven to go, Central Valley with the basketball
only five points in the second half for the Bears,
and we got the ball up on top of Lakeside,
meeting the basketball in front of the three point line,
down to fifteen to go on the shot clock. Mcgoy,
the five star commit to the University of Washington missus
the shot, gets her own rebound, goes up underneath, and
(01:02:46):
lays it up and end.
Speaker 4 (01:02:48):
And that's probably the most physical offensive place she's made
here today, where she just powered through and played through
the contact. No foul call, but she played right through.
Speaker 2 (01:02:57):
It, fair or not.
Speaker 1 (01:02:58):
I think that's the kind of action we've expecting to
see from her, maybe more so than we have, and
maybe that's what they'll go to here there. Over the
remaining four and a half minutes. They now have a
two point lead Lakeside. Looking to counter on the other end,
Christophilis swings it over to bodya Bodia falls down, loses
the basketball, Doombo picks it up going down the other side,
(01:03:20):
and she lays it in. It's a four point lead
for Central Valley. The sophomore, who missed a portion of
the season with an injury, look just fine there. Her
leg is pretty well taped up, but nonetheless goes coast
to coast.
Speaker 4 (01:03:31):
Well, this is a big possession for Lakeside. They really
need to try to keep pace here. They do not
want to not get a basket here and have a
chance to go down by six, three.
Speaker 1 (01:03:40):
Fifty six to go, and they're gonna call an offensive
foul on Christophoulis. She was looking to give herself a
little more room before trying to put a fade away
jump shot up, and she pushed off a little bit.
Speaker 4 (01:03:51):
Well, see, she's become predictable because all of those turnovers
for her have happened on the same spot on the floor.
Speaker 3 (01:03:56):
Yeah, turned it over twice.
Speaker 4 (01:03:58):
Now she pushes off because now you know exactly what
she's getting ready to try to do.
Speaker 2 (01:04:02):
And you know what else. She's got four fouls now too.
Speaker 1 (01:04:04):
They cannot afford to lose her central valley trying to
get that lead back up.
Speaker 2 (01:04:09):
They're up by four right now, three thirty nine to go.
Speaker 1 (01:04:12):
Sander, with the basketball, goes up underneath Bodia puts her
hands up in the air and she draws a travel
if you will, Sander looking for contact. Bodia, recognizing what
she was trying to do, stuck her hands up and
just kind of shuffled her feet back and let her
do her thing and fell all over the place, and.
Speaker 4 (01:04:27):
The gad bencounting because she's always gonna come back what
she did. She's gonna try to get back to that
left hand.
Speaker 1 (01:04:32):
Yeah, yeah, Bodia, you mentioned it earlier. You thought she's
the most improved player in the conference this year, and
she's been looking really good out here. Thirty four to
thirty three, twenty three to go, Lake's side down by four.
Handling the basketball, Helena Christopholis swings it over to Envi
Bodia ten seconds to go on the shot clock. Sophia
(01:04:55):
David in the game to Lily Brown four seconds to go,
three two in the tries to put up a thirteen
footer and leaves it short and throws it out of bounds,
turn over to central Valley.
Speaker 4 (01:05:05):
And that's probably the first time they really missed willa
Chin not being on the floor up against.
Speaker 3 (01:05:10):
The shot clock.
Speaker 4 (01:05:11):
They would go to her and she can go and
create her own shot. But now that christophelis a little
rattle right now, she has four freshmen not quite ready.
Maybe for the moment, they really missed willa Chin on
that possession.
Speaker 1 (01:05:22):
I think we call that pressing right just a little
bit well, and he did call a time out there,
so we're gonna take a break. Central Valley up by
four to three h four to go in the game.
We'll be right back. You're listening to the twenty twenty
five at WIAA Geeza Credit Union State Basketball Championships on
Sports Radio nine fifty KJR ped Deck Fan Here.
Speaker 13 (01:05:39):
While every day hasn't been sunshine and rainbows this winter,
we've had pretty awesome weather, allowing me and my son
to get out and enjoy some of the best golf
courses in the Northwest and do it at a very
reasonable price, thanks of course, to the Around the Sound
Golf Pass, which gets you twelve rounds of golf at Whitehorse,
McCormick Woods, Cedars of dungeons Port, Ludlow, Avalon and more
for just two seventy nine. But hurry, there aren't many
(01:06:02):
passes left, and when they're gone, they're gone. Spring is
almost here, spending on the legs. Head to seattlegolfpass dot com. Today.
Speaker 1 (01:06:12):
Players coming back onto the floor and we are just
about ready to go as we're gonna determine the first
of four state championships here today and Francis Williams. The
game coming up at five o'clock. The boys game the
three a Rainier Beach, a team you coached once upon
a time to a state championship taking on Vans Woodway
and Mike Bethia. It's been a few years since he's
won a stay titled toime. Could be the ninth.
Speaker 3 (01:06:34):
Well, they've had a great run. They've had a great run.
Speaker 4 (01:06:37):
But uh, Tyler Geving and Evans Woodway, they've been playing
well off season long, so it should be a great game,
contrasting styles, but two well coached teams, both have some
star players.
Speaker 3 (01:06:49):
Should be a good.
Speaker 1 (01:06:50):
One at tune in at five o'clock for that, and
we're gonna get a helld ball in the back courds.
Nice job at number twenty three, Sophia David, she's fired
up right now. She tied up Gabby Wilson. But it's
still Central Valley's ball, still Central Valley basketball. But nonetheless
they at least they switched the air, got the year
already to go for perhaps another moment here down the stretch.
Ye Central Valley is still with twenty two on the
(01:07:12):
shot clock. Game clock at two fifty two, and that
ball's tipped out of bounds. Christophelis got her hand on it.
Is Gabby Wilson looking to pass the ball over to mcgoy.
Sixteen left on the shot clock.
Speaker 3 (01:07:26):
And it's interesting.
Speaker 4 (01:07:27):
I mean Central Valley plays a bit like they're just
not used to the activity that Lakeside presents them on
the defensive end. I mean, Lakeside has active hands, they
do a great job communicating on defense. They've done a
great job scouting Central Valley as well. And the activity
on the defensive end has really bothered TV the entire.
Speaker 1 (01:07:46):
Game big time, well, especially in this second half, Like
you mentioned, only eight points. We get some contact there.
No are they gonna say shot clock violation turning the
ball back over to Lakeside with two thirty three left.
Speaker 4 (01:07:56):
And it's just things like that, just not having awareness
of time left on the shot clock. Lot of little
things that just make you wonder if they're having a
little bit of problem with the pressure of what's in
front of them.
Speaker 1 (01:08:08):
Ball imbounded here to the Lakeside wearing those maroon uniforms.
Helena at Christophilis the freshman bringing it up, being guarded
by Keana.
Speaker 2 (01:08:16):
Gosney, looking for a screen.
Speaker 1 (01:08:18):
She's gonna go right towards the middle, bounce the ball
off her own foot, goes right into the hands of Sander.
Sander looking to push mcgoy double team. She puts up
a contested shot, misses it, ball bounces around. A nice
job by Khaliah Woodard to get the rebound. For Lakeside,
they're gonna come the other way down by four still
with two o five to go, and it looks like
Christophlis is gonna draw contact from Eden Sander, who's gonna
(01:08:41):
pick up her first foul. Only the second team foul
for Central Valley in the quarter, so really no harm
done there either way. New shot clock for Lakeside. Game
clock now at two even Lakeside and needing a bucket
right now Brown except her dribble over to Woodard swinging
(01:09:02):
over to the left.
Speaker 3 (01:09:02):
Christophins will put it down and go to the basket.
Speaker 1 (01:09:06):
Oh had a nice look. They're nine feet out along
the baseline and she floated it over the top of
the basket. Three ball from the corner there that was
Bodia who had come away with it, and Woodard gets
the remount of new thirty for Lake said they can
slow it down a little right now as they finally
recognize that and do so. Game clock at one thirty
three shot clock at twenty one, Lillie Brown Bodia on
(01:09:28):
the wing, dribbles from right to left, passes it into
the corner there that Sophia David with the basketball tend
to go on the shot clock. Lake's side looks a
little perplexed as to what they want to do, and
Sander bails them out as she reaches in with only
seven seconds to go on the shot clock.
Speaker 4 (01:09:43):
Had done a great job depensively, no need to reach,
she had good position, get good help behind her, but
just a bit of frustration, reaches in and gets the foul.
Speaker 1 (01:09:52):
Yeah, two quick fouls for her here in the last minute,
three team fouls for Central Valley. Now one fifteen to
go in the game, thirty four to thirty and Gorney
all over.
Speaker 2 (01:10:02):
Christophlis Christophflus funny goes over to the left.
Speaker 1 (01:10:04):
They're gonna call an offensive fell on Bodia on the
screen that she was trying to set on Costni and
Bodia not happy about it. She's throwing her hands up
into the airs. Have to say, how did they call
that big turnover?
Speaker 2 (01:10:20):
There?
Speaker 1 (01:10:20):
Central Valley now with the basketball. One oh nine to
go in the game, and they will have the ball
and we're gonna get another time out. Looks like this
is a full time out. We'll take a full break.
You are listening to the WIAA twenty twenty five Geece
of Credit Union State Basketball Championships on Sports Radio nine
fifty KJR.
Speaker 5 (01:10:38):
I can't believe we have to make this commercial.
Speaker 8 (01:10:41):
It's ridiculous.
Speaker 5 (01:10:42):
You'll think it's ridiculous too. Listen to this.
Speaker 19 (01:10:46):
This commercial is about, well, it's about parents being rude
at high school athletic events.
Speaker 5 (01:10:53):
Ridiculous, right, it gets worse.
Speaker 19 (01:10:56):
Studies show more than seventy five percent of new high
school officials are quitting because of bad adult behavior.
Speaker 5 (01:11:05):
So now there's a shortage of refs here in Washington.
Speaker 19 (01:11:08):
In almost all sports, no officials means no more games?
Speaker 5 (01:11:13):
Is that what you want for us? Come on, parents,
it's time to grow up. Cheer for your team, be
proud of your children.
Speaker 15 (01:11:21):
But stop being so ridiculous and don't make us run
another commercial, because we will.
Speaker 14 (01:11:28):
This message presented by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and
the Washington State Secondary Athletic Administrators Association, reminding you to
always practice good sportsmanship.
Speaker 1 (01:11:42):
And here we go, the final sixty nine seconds of regulation,
Central Valley holding on to the four point lead, and
the basketball against the Lakeside Lions being pressed in the
back court right now, finally coming up through the front court,
one minute to go on the clock. Lakeside content not
to set them to the free throw in and try
not to foul.
Speaker 2 (01:12:02):
It's gonna make them take this shot.
Speaker 1 (01:12:05):
At some point there in Gosney almost dragged that second
foot as she picked up her dribble. Down to eight
seconds to go on the shot clock. Sander looks down low,
puts up an underhand and lap and she gets it
to go. And that might have been a dagger right there.
Speaker 3 (01:12:19):
In a good adjustment by her.
Speaker 4 (01:12:20):
They took her left hand away, stepped through, uses his
right hand to kiss it off the glass.
Speaker 3 (01:12:24):
Good adjustment by Sandy.
Speaker 1 (01:12:25):
I thought that was a desperation shot, but maybe not.
She knew what she was doing there. And on the
other end, Christophoulis is gonna get fouled. However, Lakeside or
Central Valley rather still had one to give.
Speaker 2 (01:12:37):
That'll be the fourth foul in the quarter.
Speaker 1 (01:12:40):
So now lakeside down by sixth with twenty seven seconds
to go. That's gonna be the second fell on Keona
Gosney and Christophilis puts up a shot and misses it
a runner, but boy comes away with the rebound in
Central Valley now leading by six and quickly on the
other end in their lakeside recognizing that they've got a
(01:13:01):
foul to get the ball back. So Sophia David fouled
that Dre don't be there, Dombo, and Dombo's gonna go
to the line for two. And it certainly looks like
Central Valley is about to become a seven times state champ.
And how about this not only seven state championships, this
would be the fourth different coach to do it for
them as well.
Speaker 4 (01:13:20):
Okay, well, they've always played great girls basketball in the GSL.
You know, Lewis and Clark had their run when they
had the three peat, and so there's been very good
girls basketball always played on the other side of the mountain.
Speaker 1 (01:13:35):
Mead won the four A title last year. Gonzega Prep
lost the three A title. Rather, Gonzega Prep lost the
four A title last year, so some very good basketball
being played with there. Freddie Rico had those teams where
he had Lexi and Lacy Hull who Alexi Hole now
plays for the Indiana Fever Quick Basket. There and Lakeside
(01:13:55):
calls a time out, and that was Christophoulis scoring her
eleventh and twelve points, and they're gonna to call a
quick time out. Thirty seven to thirty two Central Valley.
It's a thirty second so we'll keep it right here. Boy,
if your Lakeside, what's the message right now? I mean,
you've still got a chance. It's not much of one,
but it's a chance. What are you telling the girls?
Speaker 4 (01:14:14):
Well, I mean, you know, quick, quick, foul. That's all
you can do right now. I mean I don't even
know if you have time to see if you can
get a trap and a steal. You just just got
to foul elongate the game. But I got to go
back to when Chen got that third and then the
fourth file.
Speaker 3 (01:14:27):
I have to go back to that.
Speaker 4 (01:14:28):
I mean, they've played well enough that they showed that
they could hold on without her so that they could
possibly still have her in the game now. But to
play for to have her play with that third and
fourth foul, man that that's just a tough way to go,
and then she obviously filed out.
Speaker 1 (01:14:45):
They suit up nine players, Amani and Burkhardt, who we
haven't seen yet is the only other senior on the team.
This is the Lakeside team. I don't think we've heard
the end of it. Nonetheless, if they go away with
a second place trophy this year, I think you're gonna
see them back here again next year. I think so
quick foul there is inbounded, and it looks like Keanu
Gosti's gonna head on down to shoot a couple of
free throws. Gosti with a very quiet five point game.
(01:15:07):
It seems like she's got almost more than that.
Speaker 4 (01:15:11):
Well, she's done a lot of little things. I mean, defensively,
she's very pasky. She gave him another ball handler and
again we saw that that sprinter speed on that one
steal that she got. Man, she's got great speed and
quickness and has.
Speaker 1 (01:15:24):
A nice little free throw touch there too. He hits
the first one thirty eight to thirty two. So again
Central Valley and that ball goes in won the state
championship three times in ninety three, two thousand and one,
and two thousand and two. Well, update that in just
a second year. Two seconds to go, one clock goes
down to Zeros Christophelitz makes the basket. It does count. However,
(01:15:48):
Central Valley is your three eight girls state champions finals
score thirty nine to thirty four, seventh state title for them.
I'm just about to read some of these here. Dale
Poffinroff was a coach and he won three in nineteen
ninety three, two thousand and one. In two thousand and two,
Freddy Rico, who now coaches ridgelind over there o ridgeline
(01:16:08):
Over in Spokane. He coached the twenty sixteen and the
twenty eighteen teams to state titles, and then Police Aurel
won the twenty twenty title and now enter the name
of Jason Wilson getting his first title. So congratulations to
the girls all hugging over there celebrating having a great time.
The bus ride back to Spokane is going to be
(01:16:30):
a lot sweeter.
Speaker 3 (01:16:31):
It's sure.
Speaker 4 (01:16:31):
Will and to run the table to go undefeated, which
is very difficult to do.
Speaker 3 (01:16:35):
They have a lot to a lot to be proud of.
Speaker 1 (01:16:38):
By the way, those six previous state champions, four of
them ran the table, so they're uh all right. No
strangers to running the table. They know what they're doing.
I know what they're doing. Indeed they did and again
leg side. I can't say enough about these young ladies here.
They lost their district championship game to Seattle Prep. They
then turn around and beat Prep in the quarterfinals. Team
get to the Semis had a big win yesterday to
(01:17:00):
get here over the second seed in North Thurston team.
And you can see the dejective looks on their faces
right now. But certainly I think when time passes a
little bit, they'll recognize that what they've accomplished here this
week is fantastic.
Speaker 3 (01:17:14):
It's not I have always said that this picture should
not be taken.
Speaker 2 (01:17:17):
I agree they're taking the second place, toughest.
Speaker 4 (01:17:19):
Picture to take when you just lost the state championship game.
Speaker 1 (01:17:25):
The girls are trying to smile through it right now,
as are the coaches right in front of us here.
Speaker 2 (01:17:33):
And Lakeside.
Speaker 1 (01:17:33):
By the way, according to what I was able to
do in my research here, first time they've ever taken
a second place at state five and zero state championship games.
They took third place four different times. They've got a
fourth place trophy in their case as well. Now they're
gonna add a second place to it. But again, a
team that just twenty five and five overall in the season.
(01:17:54):
They beat a very good White River team by twenty
one last week to avoid having to play on Wednesday,
and then on Thursday, they, like I said, they got
revenge on Seattle Prep for losing the district championship game,
beating North Thurston by two and now here they are, yep,
down by thirteen at the half. They could have mailed
it in. Their best player gets three quick fouls in
the third quarter. She fouls out. The girls didn't give
(01:18:16):
up and they still almost pulled this one off.
Speaker 4 (01:18:18):
I mean, well, they were battle tested coming through the
Metro League. I mean, you know, Garfield was had an
opportunity to for their fifth state, fifth straight state championship
coming into this tournament. They lose their best player midway
through the season, so you know, the ball has to
bounce your way in a lot of instances for it
you can win any championship.
Speaker 3 (01:18:36):
So Central ballety congratulations to them. They go undefeed it.
Speaker 4 (01:18:39):
They got the state the state's best player, States McDonald
All American, so they definitely aren't it.
Speaker 1 (01:18:44):
Yeah, Mark Ackett's the PA announcer announcing that they're the
champions right now, the crowd going nuts. They're being presented
with the gold Ball trophy right in front of us. Here,
big fan base across the way from us, all cheering.
Speaker 2 (01:18:55):
They're all wearing their bright blue colors.
Speaker 5 (01:18:56):
There.
Speaker 1 (01:18:57):
We're gonna take a break round now. When we come back,
we will hope maybe even here from one or two
of these players in the coach and see how they're
gonna celebrate this this victory tonight again Central Valley, the
Bears winning their seventh girls state championship. We should mentioned
the other six, by the way, were four A trophies.
They went down to three a couple of years ago.
Now they can add a three eight to the trophy
case again. Final score thirty nine, thirty four over Lakeside.
(01:19:18):
We'll take a break and be right back with more
from the twenty twenty five WIAA GEZA Credit Union State
Basketball Championships right here on Sports Radio nine to fifty
KJR
