(00:06):
He here. We go to thestart of the second quarter and they did
fix the scoreboard finally, So itis Camus twenty Gonzaga Prep eight Prep with
the ball. First ball gets knockedaway Camus on the other end, Jamison
goes in hard, puts a littleshoulder into McIntyre, knocks it down.
No whistle, no harm, theysay. Jamison then goes up with the
lamp her eighth point of the game. It's now twenty two to eight camas

(00:29):
On a twenty two to two run. You know, I appreciate Steve.
When there's contact, there's not alwaysa foul, and right there it was
a pretty mutual contact moment. Ilike that. The reps say, it's
a state championshi game, We're gonnalet you play. Contact went both ways,
buckets up and good. We geta whistle there as Julia Few was
looking for our teammate, that saidJalen Rubright, who hadn't been in the
game yet. Pass got knocked away, grabbed by camuson Immediately the player who

(00:51):
grabbed it, which was believe thatwas Buzzard on the play got tied up.
So we got our first held ballimmediately into the quarter. Here Jamison
on the other end, as itwas Camus arrowed. She hits a bucket.
Two quick field goals for her inthe first minute of the second quarter.
She's got ten points already, twentyfour to eight score. And then
look bit she does on the otherend. She picks off a few pass

(01:15):
and she is the school record leaderin steals and just added another one there.
She might start catching some point totalsthere too. If she keeps us
up, she's gonna go for three. This time left it a little short
off the front iron, ball bouncesaround, grabbed by Sands, kicks it
over to Harris. Harris lays itup and in Addison Harris, by the
way, her mom back in theday, once upon a time, played

(01:38):
for Battle Creek Hece or Battleground HighSchool won a state championship. You think
Addie wants one two, she's wellund her way right now, absolutely,
and she's gonna get a steal there. Pass was batted away. It was
Peterson on the pass, Harris tryingto go all the way, lazer it
up with one hand, falls offthe front iron. But she's gonna go
to the line for two free throws. As Quinn Peterson who will was the

(02:00):
uh the ball passer on the playtry to hustle down to guard Harris,
got a piece of her on herway up, and that's gonna send Harris
to the free throw line. Andthat's that's a six to Addie Harris.
This isn't necessarily what that guard heightis, but that's the way that the
men's but especially the women's game hasevolved. Steve. Where you see these
taller players, you've already seen bearshof the Bullpups have a three pointer.

(02:21):
Drop down, mate, he's onefor two from the three point line.
Addy Harris right there, goes thelength of the court, gets to steal
pushed out front, puts it intoone hand, almost palms of putting it
out there, trying to get thatscoop lay in. Just a fantastic athlete
right there, pushing her own steel, not just having to pass it off.
With that pass miss, the freethrow gets batted around. Finally McIntyre
for Gonzaga Prep grabs it, runsit across the front courters. They're gonna

(02:42):
reset themselves here. Harris has seenboth of those free throw attempts. A
few with the basketball double team atthe free throw line, kicks it over
to the left side. Ball passedaround a little bit MacIntyre back into the
lane to few over to Bears rightnow. Bears loses the ball momentarily grabbed
by Ala Cornwall. The freshman ballgets batted up into the air and it's
gonna be grabbed by Lauren Hood, freshman for Cavas who's in the game now,

(03:06):
who tried to pass the ball downthe floor. Ball gets knocked out
of bounds by Cornwall and Camus willhave the basketball on the side right in
front of the Gonzaga bench with twentysix to go here on the shot clock
and Ala corner out there. Thepresence of mind seeing that almost like a
defensive back in football, almost seeingthat pass coming in couldn't secure for the
interception. What a fantastic hands thepokaouda bounce. Jamison once again, driving

(03:30):
into the lank, kicks it outfor a three ball. That ball is
missed as Sands put up a shot, and they're gonna get one of the
canvas players for the offensive foul. They're on the rebound coming down. I
see they're gonna get here. Lookslike they're gonna call that a number four
buzzard. Yep, they're gonna getbuzzard for that. But it was the
box out right there, the boxup by number twenty two. Laura Thompson
for the bullpups. That software doinga great job putting her button to her

(03:53):
defender, clearing that space to forcebuzzer to go over her instead of just
allowed it to be a fifty tofifty jump ball. Cam's definitely looking at
get a little physical then there Jamisonreally using that shoulder and forearm. Well,
ball kicked down low. Shot ismissed as that was number twenty two.
Laura Thompson with an attempt, hadabout a six foot look along the
right baseline there missed it and thisball is gonna be picked away Cornwall with

(04:15):
a steel She's gonna try to gocoast to coast, gets knocked to the
ground. There she goes up forthe lamp and Gonzega. Prep's gonna go
to the free throw Linus Cornwall drawingthe contact. There is Parker Meers,
the senior Maryor's sister, is gonnabe called for her first foul. And
you can see this. The athleticsis in the speed of Alet Cornwall.

(04:36):
You were talking earlier before in thepregame, you were saying about how just
the athletic and how she's in gotto the free throw line a lot,
and you can see why. It'sthe quickness and the speed that's able to
get her ahead of defenses that peopleare gonna have to reach as she goes
by or try to track her downand file from behind. Right there,
didn't get that free throw to go, but the second one is good,
meaning she's only eight more away fromthat tournament say record. Yep, we

(04:56):
mentioned that during the the pregame earlier. She has thirty two and I'll make
it thirty three free throws made thisweek at the tournament, eight away from
the tournament record. We'll see ifshe can get there. And that's a
lot of free throws at make ina game that is in one game,
but it's a lot to get fortyin four games, and she's already got
thirty two or thirty three. Thompsonand Harris doing a little back and forth
airs the ball's finally knocked out ofbounce. Harris had the ball, kicked

(05:19):
it over to Thompson. She drovebaseline on the right side, threw the
ball back over to Harris and theball was batted out of bounds. Sixteen
to go on the shot clock.Right now, beautiful in bounce player there,
easy bucket for Riley Sands and givea lot of credit to number five
Parker Merris who threw the ball intoher twenty eight to nine lead. Right
now, the lead us up tonineteen down on the other end, Few

(05:41):
kicks it out in the right corner, bears for three bounces off the front
iron. Jamison grabs it campus withthe ball one more time as Kira Thompson's
going to look to try to pushit up the floor, drives by her
dad, the head coach there amoment, Ago goes into the key,
kicks it out to the right side, Jamison into the right corner. Now
Thompson with a spin move drives putsit up. She's not gonna make the
basket, but she will head tothe free throw line with it. Yet

(06:03):
another foul and you're seeing right now, Steve the Camas paper begers. They
have half court says, they havehalf court plays, obviously, but right
now it's really almost a feel they'rejust taking the defenses giving them. They're
just playing basketball. You see rightthere, Jamison pushed the ball to Thompson
in the corner went to pick onthe ball. Thompson said, oh,
they overplayed a little bit. I'mjust gonna take a baseline reading what the

(06:25):
defense is giving, exploiting that weaknessright there, ends up going to the
free throw line. Thompson, who'smore of a passer than she's a shooter.
I think she can do both. But hey, when you have players
like this on your team, you'lllook to distribute, and it's easy to
facilitate when you have scores and peoplewho can catch the ball finish the ball.
It's fun to get assists. It'sfun to see your teammates just get
easy buckets because of a great pass. You may also fun to score.

(06:46):
She makes one of the two freethrows, missed the second one there is.
Bears comes down with the rebound forthe Bullpups, looking to pass there
over to her teammate Cornwall, andthe ball is gonna be knocked out of
bounds by Harris. Five seconds comeoff the shot clock with four nineteen to
go in the half, and Camasis in a one two one one full
court press. The Bullpups smartly throwit deep to break it, but they're
gonna try to run and jump andtake them from behind it. No,

(07:09):
couldn't get that right there, pokeit out of bounce Bullpup's gonna maintain basketball
on the baseline, But that pressurefrom the makers is really starting to get
into their heads. That ball wasthrown into the front court, Laura Thompson
had it, ball was knocked awayby Bears out of bounds. Still GP
basketball twenty one now left on theshot clock, so not a lot of
time off. The ball comes outon top here, Cornwall into the lane,

(07:30):
dishes it over to bears. Bearsgoes up strong hairs with their arms
straight in the air. I don'tthink she agreed with the foul that I
know the fans behind me do not. I kind of thought maybe she got
all the ball there, but theofficials say otherwise. So one of the
and that's gonna send Bears to thefree throw line. Yeah. And one
of the things you want to teachyour young posts right away is the rule
of verticality. As long as youare straight up and you are straight above

(07:51):
your feet, it's not gonna bea foul that time. Unfortunate hairs kind
of got baited on the pump fakeby Bears, hairs kind of brought her
hands forward a little bit down. Not much of an angle, but I
saw that as well as the official. I think that's enough of an angle
that I would say she did foulher on that. Bears at the free
throw line with one more to goafter making the first twenty nine to ten

(08:11):
ballgame. Right now, Bears tryingto cut a little more off that deficit.
Ball goes up and it's through.Bears now has six of the eleven
points for GP here today, Chemistsslowly bringing the ball up as we just
are about to pass the halfway markhere in the second quarter, Papermakers looking
for their first ever basketball state championship. Harris kicks it out. Thompson up

(08:35):
on top, fakes a pass, beautifully draws the defender way off to the
left, and then she drains thethree. Wow. That's kind of like
being faked out of your shorts rightthere. Beautiful play by Kira Thompson.
Well, and that's because she's sucha great passer, and people understand that
and expect that when she fakes thatpass, the defense smartly all reacted with
Thompson was just a fraction smarter andgrab that and made three. Throwing there,

(08:58):
Jamison picks it off, she's gonnatake at the distance, goes to
the ground as she lays it upand in no whistle or was there there
was, She's gonna try to convertthe three point play. Jamison now with
six points in the first quarter. She's now matched it with six points here
in the second quarter and looking forher thirteenth point of the game with this
free throw attempt coming up. Andwe should also mention here that we've got

(09:18):
another substitution, Brianna Forbis, asix foot senior checking into the game.
Forbis, by the way, iscommitted to playing basketball at the University of
Puget Sound next year. She's wonanother one of their athletic sinnees. And
here comes the free throw, missesit offensive board, however, nice job
by SAMs to get the rebound.Pulls out to the left, puts up

(09:39):
a three, She misses it.Rebound comes down to prep and here comes
Pornwall, trying to dribble through afew different defenders. Comes into the front
court. Beautiful move there into thelane. She's gonna try to take it
herself and rims around and then dropsin the freshman not playing like one there
and she gets her second field goalof the game. She's got five.

(10:00):
It makes it a thirty four tothirteen game, and coach Scott Thompson with
papermakers, had his hands just indisbelief, saying, how is that not
a carry? I think she hadher hand on top, Steve. I
think it was a good call ora good no call. Metor Ryder Sands
driving in from the right side thereand block from behind is Jullian Bears,
the six foot three senior, sendsthat one out of bounds fourteen seconds to

(10:20):
go here on the shot clock forCamus. So we mentioned it earlier.
Harris going to play at Montana State, FORBIS is going to play at UPS,
Jamison is gonna play at Penn Andthen you've got the Mayor sisters who
are gonna play volleyball and soccer.I know by the way, Riley Sands
uncommitted yet, but she's soon gonnabe signing with a college to play basketball.

(10:43):
Is shot is missed there and GPcomes down with the rebound, we're
gonna get a foul called here onCamus on the play. And this this
team, I mean the school, the facilities, if if you ever get
a chance to drive through town togo to Camus and you see there is
such a phenomenal under standing of facilitiesand athletics that they have built that is
not to me. It's just anexplosion of talent that they have in the

(11:07):
area, but mostly because of theircommitment to athletics as a community. What
a fantastic job, fantastic opportunity forthese young female and their male The guys
are down here at the state tournamentas well. Lost on Wednesday in that
round of sixteen, but there's justso much appreciation for athletics that they are
able to have these fantastic athletic teams. Cornwall driving all the way down there
while that was going on, andit was found she got double teamed.

(11:30):
She's just looking to score every timeshe gets it. Right now, she
dribbled down into the left corner, fifth team foul on Camus. That's going
to send her to the free throwline, and she hits the first free
throw. And again this is AlaCornell, a freshman who is not playing
like a freshman the state tournament.Getting her team to the state championship game
as a point guard not an easytask, ever, to do. But

(11:52):
what a fantastic player she is.Look for her the next few years as
well. Miss is the second freethrow Camas with the board, bringing it
over into the front court. Ineed to go in the first half,
Thompson, being guarded very closely byJulia a few SAMs with the ball,
kicks it from right to left.Jamison with a spin move in the lane,
kicks it back out. Thompson swingsit onto the left wing. They

(12:13):
reset everything at the top five togo on the shot clock. Thompson with
a long three bounces high into theair off the rim, coming down into
the hands of Cornwall, the freshmanfrom Gonzega Prep, and we are now
down under the two minute mark.Cornwall again decides to take it all the
way herself, puts up a shot, draws contact on number five. Parker
Mars Maris goes to the ground,a little bit of a body check there,

(12:35):
and that's gonna send Cornwall back tothe free throw line. And it's
the right tactic to do, especiallyyou want to get your team going.
You're going get your team into this. But but for Cornwall, she can
find a sliver, just a smallopening to the free throw line. She's
done a great job of knifing throughthe defense to get to the rack.
Either she's gonna make the lane orgo to the free throw line, gets
the first one to drop for herright there. But just really impressed by

(12:56):
this talented the quickness of this freshman. But it's kind of a little bit
a sly quickness, if you will, Steve. It's both of her free
throws four for six now in thegame and in the quarter for that matter,
at the free throw line for Cornwall. Makes it a thirty four to
sixteen ball game, one forty fiveto go here in the first half,
left side, Thompson kicks it overto Sands, thought about a shot,

(13:18):
a lot of contact there. Shekicks out to Jamison, who goes up
with a three and drains since ReaganJamison with fifteen first half points. She's
almost outscored GP on her own thirtyseven to sixteen score with one twenty five
to go, and coach Jeff Ardyis just beside himself that there was not
a foul called on a moving screenagain, but unfortunately it's a three ball

(13:39):
for Jamison and Isla Cornwall trying todo a little bit of everything, including
trying to hit Steph Curry's like shotsthat was about seven feet behind the three
point line. It heads off therim, it goes out of bounds.
He'll be Camas basketball with one twelveto go here in the first half,
and situationally they were just doing thatwithout Harris on the court. They bring

(14:01):
her back in the game for theCamus papermakers. I mean, what kind
of luxury do you have. Youcan have Harris out and be on a
six to zer run with her onthe bench. Now you bring her back
and she's the greater Saint Helen's threetime player of the Year, Julia if
you by the way, knocking thatball away on an errant pass, Camas
with the turnover there and then itgets turned back Oover on the other end.
However, we're getting going to whistlehere is I look Cornwall trying to

(14:22):
drive from the left side of thelane into the right and as the ball
was knocked away, contact apparently happenedas well, and she's gonna go back
to the free throw line again.Camas already over the five foul a spot
there in that quarter here, sothey will be shooting free throws the rest
of the way. That's the goodnews. The bad news they only get
to do that for fifty more secondsis we're coming down to the final minute

(14:43):
here of the first half. Yeah, and even though this is this game
has cam Us up thirty seven sixteenseventeen. Actually, as Cornwall hits that
first free throw right there, eventhough it's a twenty point lead for Camus,
coach Scott Thompson is still frustrated, looking at the officials, kind of
giving that look of like I don'tunderstand what you want us to do.
Differently, second shot is missed, ball bounces around a little bit, Jamison

(15:03):
finally goes up and grabs a rebound, and Camus looking to push on the
other end, Thompson the beautiful nolook past to Harris off of her hands.
Harris lost the ball moment charily triedto save it as it was going
out of bounds right underneath the hoop, threw it quickly off to the side.
However, she throws it out ofbounds, it'll be a turnover into
the hands of Gonzaga prep here withforty to go, so ten second differential

(15:26):
between the shot clock and the gameclock down by twenty. Trying to get
something going here McIntyre right side andgets the ball knocked away. Nice job
there by. Camus turnovers Thompson causethe turnover, gets the ball ahead to
Sands. We are now down totwenty two to go here and the half
shot clock is off. Thompson alittle scoop past to Sands, who goes
down towards the basket double team. She kicks it out. Nice job there

(15:50):
by Marius. Marius throws it outto Thompson. Thompson draws contact and she's
gonna be fouled with eleven seconds togo here in the half non shooting foul.
However, it was only the fourthfoul of the quarter on Gonzega prep,
so they did have one to givethere, so say Camus will in
fact have a chance to inbound theball out of bounds with eleven seconds to
go, and the tough one rightthere is that junior Julia Few for the

(16:12):
Bullpups just picked up her third foulright there. Unfortunately just in the wrong
place the wrong time right there,But she's gonna go to the bench with
having three fouls is definitely a toughone going into halftime. Five seconds to
go here in the half Thompson fakesthe pass, lays it up, Missus
Harris with a rebound, goes backup and puts it in with one second
to go, and the clock willexpire after the basket, however, and

(16:36):
Addie Harris showing why she is athree time league MVP as her team is
now up thirty nine to seventeen, and we have come to the end of
the first half. It has beenall Camus paper Makers here again, paper
Makers thirty nine, Bullpups seventeen. We're gonna take a break. You're listening
to the twenty twenty four WIAA Geezeof Credit Union State Basketball Championships Radio nine

(17:00):
fifty KJR, Jacoba. Doome here, Camus Papermakers with a thirty nine to
seventeen lead over the Gunzega Prep Bulldogsand Joel Boyer. They just handed you
the stat sheet as the stat crewswalked by. What jumps out at you
in the first half, Well, the first thing that jumps out, honestly,
Steve, is just seeing the Papermakershave attempted thirty one shots the Bullpups

(17:23):
only seventeen, nearly double, notquite, but almost double the amount of
shot attempts. Even if you're shootingtwenty percent thirty percent, that's just gonna
net you so many more points asit is. The Papermakers shooting forty five
percent. Fourteen of thirty one isa team in the first half. For
the Bullpups three of seventeen steve seventeenpercent. You need to do a little

(17:44):
better than that. I will saythis. Looking at Gunzega Prep opening around
back on Wednesday, they trailed LakeStevens at one point, came back to
win quarterfinals. They trailed at halfby five points to Woodenville, number two
ranked team by the way, cameback and one. They came out strong
in the third quarter with an eighteento four run. The semifinals against Davis,
they trailed by ten in the thirdquarter. This is a team that

(18:06):
knows how to come from behind. Now, they weren't done by twenty two
in any of those games. Ifyou are coach Rdy right now, what
are you telling the Bullpups? Oh, you had to start with that one.
Let's just get it out of theway, right Yeah, he's having
to have that conversation as we speak. Yeah, and I honestly you want
to coach for this game, yes, but understand when you're down twenty two
against the number one team in thestate, a team that has beat you

(18:27):
by twenty one, I think twentytwo before Las week. Yeah, I
mean, it's a tough road. There's you're not gonna try to tell them,
no, no, we're gonna comeback in just a couple minutes.
But you do want to say,all right, we're not gonna necessarily win
this game in one quarter. Wecan't, but can we make this can
we lessen that differential? Can weget it down to fourteen, down to
twelve maybe at the start of thefourth quarter, and see if we can't

(18:49):
break into that. Now, youknow, he's probably gonna say we're gonna
have to come up with Plan B, Plan C, Plan D defensively to
try to slow down the papermakers.Unfortunately, I don't know if going to
a full court press is really gonnado the trick for them. Because Kiara
Thompson, coach's daughter, we talkedabout the junior. She's quick, she's
decisive, she has great patient, great vision, and when you have players
like Jamison and Harris that are sixone sixty two athletic, can catch the

(19:10):
ball, throw it up to themmid court, be able to turn and
find each other. That ball mighthave hit the floor to break the press,
and it could be an easy lengthat the end. So necessarily going
to a full core press might notbe the right thing. But at the
same time, you have two freshmenstarting. You got six freshmen in this
on this team of your twelve playersof state. You're not just coaching this
game, You're coaching for the futurein the next year's game as well.
Definitely, we're gonna take another breakright now. When we come back,

(19:33):
I'm gonna ask you what the CamasPapermakers are talking about in their locker room.
We'll keep you ready this time onceagain. The halftime score the Camas
Papermakers leading the Gonzega Prep Bullpups byscore up thirty nine to seventeen in the
four to eight Girls State Championship game. You're listening to the twenty twenty four
WIAA Geze Credit Union State Basketball Championshipson Sports Radio nine to fifty KJR,

(20:03):
and welcome back again to the TacomaDome. The four to eight Girls State
Championship game taking place, and theCamas Papermakers leading Gunzega Prep thirty nine to
seventeen at the half. Steve Willet'salong with Joel Boyer and Joel I just
asked you a moment ago what theconversation is like in the GP blocker room
right now. That's a tough conversation. They're down by twenty two. How
about on the other side of thecoin there, Camus, you're up by

(20:26):
twenty two. You've been running teamslately anyway. You beat this team by
twenty two last week, you beattahom about forty one two days ago.
What is Coach Thompson telling his crewright now? Well, I'll tell you
right now, it's a lot morefun to be in that locker room than
the Gunzega prep B locker room.Let's just be real about that. At
this situation of the game, witha twenty two point lead. But it's
not only with a twenty two pointlead, but you have your stars just

(20:47):
showing up. You have Jamison withfifteen, you have Sands with seven.
You got Addison Harris with only sixpoints, but she's three or four shooting.
She hasn't had to do anything rightnow, is jamis just been able
to dominate that. You have KiraThompson only one of six, but she's
got four assists and just doing agreat job controlling the pace of this ball

(21:07):
game. I think the one thinghe's gonna talk about and emphasize saying,
stop bowling. They're getting called forsome fouls. Not sure some of that,
I do think were absolutely were afouls somewhere a little more tickytac maybe,
But he's gonna say, move yourfeet, play more efficiently, don't
give up any second chance point, don't give off any offensive rebounds. Play
perfectly now, is it possible? No, But he's going to implore his
players not to treat this as atwenty two point lead, where we just

(21:30):
do this. He's gonna say, hey, play for your friends on the
bench, play for your teammates whowant to sub in and play in this
game as well, but play itcleanly the first three four minutes to two
to three minutes of this third quarter, let me start making such substitutions and
un let's see, we can't havea curtain call in the fourth quarter.
And we saw within the latter partof the second quarter Cornwall kind of trying
to put the team on her shouldersa little bit. She's certainly in more

(21:52):
of a mindset up. I'm gonnatake the ball and try to score every
time. Now does that maybe changethe way you kind of defend her in
the third quarter coming out? Idon't know if it's gonna chant, but
you're just gonna employ your players.Hey, move your feet a little bit
more, Recognize that she's kind ofshifty quick, and that she's able to
go by maybe kind of deceptively quick. She I mean, she's a fast
player, she's a good athlete.You can see she's getting by toms a
little more than I would probably haveexpected. And so that's probably one of

(22:14):
the seasy to say, hey,be willing to help off, show that
help defense, but then recover toyour man. Don't necessarily double off.
But let's just try to get theball out of her hands and make it
difficult. I really look at thisteam for GP, and while they have
a lot of fantastic players of usspot up shooting players, they have bears
inside, but they don't really havea lot of players that can create their
own shot. It's gonna be moreof a catch and shoot out of the

(22:34):
pass, out of that great vision. But Cornwall is the one that's able
to create her own shot. That'swhat she's been trying to do right now
in the first half, and it'sit really been a great defensive effort though
by campus paper Bakers to not reallyallow those passes to go to their people,
forcing her due herself. That certainlyseems to be the case. Right
now, we're gonna take another break. We will be back here in just
a moment to get to some morestats. We got some fun fact tooys

(22:55):
to talk about it here too. We'll get that when we come back once
again. Camus with the thirty nineseventeen lead over Gunzega Prep. You're listening
to the twenty twenty four WIAA GezaCredit Union State Basketball Championships right here on
Sports Radio nine to fifty KJR,and welcome back to the halftime show here

(23:19):
at the four eight girls state championshipgame, Steve Willot's along with Joel Boyer.
Joel, you just got done callinga portion of that last game.
I know we were preceded by theUniversity of Washington men's basketball game against USC,
but in the four A boys championshipgame, we crowned our first of
four champions today, mount Size seventytwo, Richland fifty eight. I'm guessing

(23:41):
not a huge surpriser. I thinka lot of us were expecting them outside
of perhaps wrap up a state titletoday. Well I think we knew,
well, you don't know anything. You always got to play the game,
but we expected mount Side. Theywere number one to start the season.
They finished the season number one, having wrapped up that state tath today one
of the important things anyway. Theyhad six loss on the season, but
Steve, all of them came fromout of state. Turn they went to
play. They went and found thebest competition they could to go get season,

(24:03):
to get battle tests against those teams. They didn't lose to a single
team in the state of Washington allseason long. That took care of business.
Richland was a formidable opponent, butjust was not enough when it came
to outside. Wildcats just had alot of great senior performances from both Trevor
Hennick as well as Blake Forrest.Props to those guys. Five state final
fours in the last in a row. They've gone five years and real they've

(24:25):
been in the Saint semifinals are better. Not too shabby. Seven o'clock game
coming up here after this, whenit is the three A Boys title game,
Mike Benton will be on the call. He's warming up in the bullpen
right behind US number two east SideCatholic number ten Rainier Beach Raider Beach not
used to be in outside the topnine, maybe not used to being outside
the top four. Yet, hey, guess what, they're back again.

(24:45):
Well, and I don't think MikeWithay really cares what Seedy gets. Once
they get to this point, it'sgoing to say, hey, we're still
gonna coach. Rainier Beach has beenthere, They've done that, They've got
the T shirts to prove it,all that kind of stuff. And Mike
Withay has been there for so longhe knows exactly what needs to happen for
teams in is a seed at thistime of the year in the Tacoma Dome,
I don't care what seed they are. Brander Reach is always former.
I'm guessing he might have even usedthat as a little motivation first. You

(25:07):
know, he might have said, hey, rank is lower, it'll be
better for the halftime talk. Coachesare never afraid to use that when they
ended a little X or something. And then the nine o'clock games to ninety
three eight Girls Championship game, theteam quite frankly from the spokanary that was
getting a lot of the attention allyear. It wasn't Gonzaga Prep necessarily,
it was the three A team.Mead, number one seed coming in and

(25:27):
here they are in the championship gameagainst number six Garfield. Yeah, and
you know, to be honest,we're talking about seedings again. Garfield is
the sixth seed this year. Andyet Steve, they're the three time defending
state champion. They're gonna be intheir four state championship game in four years.
They won the first three. They'regonna look to try to make it
a four peat. But Mead,oh boy, they're the number one team

(25:48):
for a reason. And I TarrenGardner, their point guard, just makes
them go. Remember watching the lastof the state tournament with my eyes wind
up and couldn't believe how impressed Iwas with that that player. And then
she comes back for a senior yearobviously just a steady, steady hand at
the point guard position. And Idid practice. I did promise you one
fun factoid before we go to ournext commercial break here, how about this
one I just happened at Google, went to Google Maps before we came on

(26:10):
the air, just out of curiosity, how far away from the Tacoma Dome
is Gonzega Prep versus Camas. Howabout this a nice even number here if
you will. Maybe the numbers notso even, but it's a perfect multiplication
number. Camas one and forty sevenmiles away from the Tacoma Dome. If
you were to drive times that bytwo exactly and you get two hundred and

(26:32):
ninety four. What's so far GonzegaPrep is away from here? They had
to travel twice as far. Butthen again, Camus has been all over
the country this year, playing inWashington, d C. In Portland and
all over the place. Either way, both teams had to travel aways to
get here. I'm sure a winor lose, it's gonna be worth it
for both of them. They're bothgonna put a trophy in the trophy case.
We're gonna take another commercial break rightnow again, Camus up by twenty

(26:53):
two. As we get ready tostart the second half. You're listening to
the twenty twenty four WIAA GISA CreditUnion State Championship basketball game right here on
Sports Radio nine fifty KJR, andthe final seconds are ticking off the clock
here for halftime, we get readyfor the third quarter of action. Camus

(27:15):
trying to take home the state championshiptrophy for the first time ever in the
school's basketball program. Finished second lastyear, finished fourth the year before,
and they are now potentially sixteen minutesaway from doing so. As they continue
to huddle, Gonzega prep back inplace, ready to go. They're gonna
get the ballfers to start off thesecond half, and looking over their players

(27:37):
right now, it looks like thesame starting lineup for GP that they came
out with to begin the game.Peterson, few, McIntyre, Bears,
and Cornwall. Looking around at Camusthey are doing likewise Jamison, Sands,
Buzzard, Harris and Thompson. Andwe are under way and we're gonna see
some of those keys to the secondhalf that Joel Boyer pointed out. Cornwall,

(27:59):
they come true, kicks out toMcIntyre, she goes hard to the
lane, lays it up and inAnd I don't think we've seen Olivia McIntyre
take over a play like that.We certainly did it in the first half.
Maybe she's changing up her game alittle bit here well, And that's
a great call right there, comingout of halftime. You say, this
is what we're gonna run in thefirst possession. Let's see if we can't
get to go get McIntyre, goand get another scorer on the board for
the Bullpups. See if they can'tnet them something. Kara Thompson, driving

(28:22):
on the left side of the lane, try to float up an underhandshot,
goes off the backboard, comes intothe hands of Bears. Gonzaga prep with
the ball and they quickly get theball over into the front court. Cornwall
not messing around. She goes intothe lane. Ball just bounces right off
of the top of the rim thereand comes off, but a nice look.
Nonetheless, Gonzega preps certainly looking likethey're ready to play, and Jamison

(28:44):
puts a little shoulder and an elbowinto Few, knocks her down on the
dribble, and they're gonna call acharge. Julie Few with a nice defensive
play there. Absolutely wore that prettywell. But that was the extension of
the arm by Jamison. Absolutely, but she knew it. She saw it.
She's like, well, I hopeyou don't call it, but oh
well, well look for Gonzaga rightnow, they just had a score.
They got a stop. Let's seethey another score. And how about that

(29:07):
Olivia McIntyre, second time down inthree times that she just drives right through
the lane, not messing around. She had the ball at the top of
the key, shot through the lane, put up the basket, made it
and gets fouled. She's gonna goto the free throw line in a big
smile on her face as the daughterof the head coach of the Gonzaga Prep
boys team, getting a bucket there. And we get a quick time out

(29:27):
here, a full timeout, Ibelieve called by Canvas. So we'll take
a break, and all of asudden, Gonzega Prep looks like they want
to stick around here, make thisa game. We'll see what happens.
We're gonna take a break right now. Thirty nine to twenty one is the
score. You're listening to the twentytwenty four WAA GISA Credit Union State Basketball
Championships on Sports Radio nine fifteen KJR. And we're back at the Tacoma domeas

(29:53):
McIntyre misses the free throw attempt comingoff, trying to make the end one
and back on the a nice littledish down low. Addie Harris gets the
ball goes over the top of thedefender and the six foot two senior with
her second field goal here in thehalf forty one to twenty one. Score
other end, Gonzega Prep says we'renot gonna waste any time Alia Cornwall with

(30:17):
a bucket of three. Yeah, and Cornwall just has that that I the
tiger, that look of understand like, I know we're down by a lot,
I'm not holding back and wasting notime. On the other end,
once again, Harris with another bucket. Yeah, Addie Harris. I mean,
she only had six points in thefirst half, and not because she
needed any more than that, butshe looked for her just to be able
to exert her her will right nowand just say let's go get some buckets.

(30:41):
The fact that you've got the numberone player on the floor with a
six point first half and you're stillby twenty two kind of scary for a
prep if you start thinking about wonderingif she's gonna start scoring, and that's
what she's done so far. Bearswith a three ball, leaves it a
little bit short, comes off theside iron there in a nice job by
Kendall Maris from Camus to grab therebound and she kicks it over to Thompson.

(31:02):
Jamison right shoulder, passes down lowand cuts through the lane and finally
the ball is gonna be knocked away. That was Sands with the basketball gets
punched away by the Bullpups. Backon the other end, Cornwall with a
pass down low field goes up andgets blocked by Jamison. Ball gets tied
up as it goes to the floorthere as Bear's crashes now to try to

(31:22):
save it for the Bullpups. It'sgonna be Camas arrow, possession arrow and
a nineteen point lead. As thePapermakers get ready to throw it back in
and we get a substitution here asgoing to the bench right now Queen Peterson
the freshman for Gonzaga Prep. Andnumber ten. That's Mackenzie Prince, the
five foot nine sophomore into the game. And see Jamison for Papermakers, just

(31:45):
such a graceful athlete. She hada beautiful block right there, but she's
just so quick off the ground.Kick out here Thompson with a three ball
bounces around. Nice job by Maysto go up, but she gets the
rebound acount finish it, however, misses the MacIntyre grabs it. She's gonna
push hard down on the other end, You're gonna try to take it all
the way, goes up underneath adefender misses it, but grabs her own

(32:07):
rebound, kicks it out Cornwall fromabout twenty five feet, bounces around,
she gets the touch there. Theshooters bounce, if you will, and
Cornwall with her second three here inthe half, and that twenty two point
deficit at halftime down to sixteen rightnow, and Julia Few the bullpuck that
kept that alive by just getting totip on the ball to get it out
to Cornwall, and Cornwall almost witha steal there is on the other end

(32:30):
Cavas Thompson, driving the left baseline, tried to kick it out to the
right shoulder. Cornwall got a handon it and knocked it out of bounce.
Fifteen to go on the shot clock. Yeah, she thought that ball
might have been hers, and Iactually thought she might have knocked it off.
It might have been stands over there. Couldn't tell, uh, But
unfortunately it's gonna stay with the papermakers. Freshman wanting to try to bring this

(32:52):
team back, and Thompson thought thatParker Marris over there was cutting through the
baseline there, so he put onthe brakes and the ball goes out of
bounds. Little miscommunication between the twoplayers there trying over to GP. If
you start a back door cut,you gotta finish a backdoor cut, even
if you read something different part waythree, you're like a you gotta keep
going because unfortunately your point guard throughwhere they thought you were going. Cornwall

(33:15):
with the ball kicks it out toa few few trying to press it into
the lane. Their ball gets knockedaway. Try to throw a hard chest
pass right through the lane and therewere a couple of papermakers there waiting to
bat the ball away. That's gonnabe Camus basketball. Yeah, and unfortunately
that ball almost got through. ButOlivia McIntyres and get whistled with a foul
there. I believe that just reachedout. It's our third foul. So

(33:36):
there's three on few, three onmac and tire for the bullpups. Tough
sledding for those two players, asthey're very important and integral, but they
need to play with a lot ofpassion, a lot of energy, which
sometimes gets you in trouble with fouls. Jamison with the ball being guarded closely
by a few. Few knocks itinto the back court. Scrum there for
the ball, and nice job byFew. As both of the players go
to the ground, Few ends upon the back side of James, but

(34:00):
reaches the hand around and traps theball under the ground there, tries to
palm it if you will possession,Arrow is gonna go over to Gunzega prep
and Jamison. Really she was actuallytrying to pick Few's hand off the ball,
saying, no, get it offthere, don't get it. Don't
get a jump ball called because Ihave possession. But of course they're gonna
call it and the hand check thereand that's gonna go. By the way,

(34:21):
McIntyre is still with the no fells. They gave that to a few
ways three now, so we'll haveto keep an eye on that. And
Camas is gonna get called for areach in there. Looks I think they
still have them with both the threethere. Steve, Oh, that's a
you're looking looking through the looking throughthe some of the the wiring up there
at the scoreboard. It's hard tosee a little bit here in the metal

(34:42):
lattice work. They're blocking that zerolook like a three looked like a zero
does a three ball is knocked awaythere Kendall Mars comes away with it,
kicks it over to Thompson. Camuslooking to push Jamie said out on the
right wing, back out to Thompson. As they slow things down a little
bit, Harris with a long threeand that's he's gonna bounce around on the
rim and comes off grabbed by Cornwall. Gonzega prep looking to push on the

(35:05):
other end. In transition, Cornwallgoes up and she makes the lay up.
Cornwall is a special player here, only a freshman making a name for
herself with a dome this first year. Can't wait to see this kid coming
back as a sophomore as a junior. Is a senior if coach Jeff already
has his way about it. Seventeenpoints now for Cornwall. Three ball up

(35:25):
in there from Jamison misses it,Paul batted around. Mayers comes away with
it, kicks it back out Jamison. Now Paul is picked off. Guess
who Cornwall and she's gonna easily godown to the other end and lay it
up and in. And my goodness, this game has changed a little bit.
It was a twenty two point Campuslead at halftime. That lead has

(35:46):
been cut to twelve. Forty threeto thirty one is our score. Thirty
second timeout, so we'll keep itright here. And all of a sudden,
Joel, we were wondering where thepoints were gonna come from. Somehow
some Gonzega going into transition. They'repushing the ball ahead quickly, getting the
steals, making the plays happen rightnow, and they are currently on a

(36:07):
fourteen to four run to start thehalf. Well, and it starts all
with Ayla Collins there, I meanor she sorry, Ayla Cornwall not only
a Collins thinking about a different VPplayer from the past, but it all
starts with Cornwall. She is justwilling things to happen, getting her hands
on tips tips of balls and pushingthe ball when she can. But she's
choosing to really keeping her hands alot more, and she in the first

(36:29):
half and honestly, I think that'snetting her more Right now, Steve,
their team is just a little discombinedat times. With her with the ball
in her hands, good things arehappening. Look for her to try to
keep doing that, pushing it,forcing Camus to change their defense in order
to stop this run. That they'reon. Okay, let's see what they
talked about in the huddle. Learnif it's gonna work her out. The
papermakers again out scored fourteen to four. Here in the quarter. Looking to

(36:51):
try to break that right now, pass down to Harris, it was tipped
by Cornwall initially kicks it out intothe corner. The three ball is up
and it misses. That was SophieBuzzer. I missed it. Scramble for
the ball. Harris comes up withit, kicks it up for three pointer
and Thompson drains it. And youknow, when you have a player like
Harrison can get that rebound, thatoffensive rebound and throw it right back to

(37:12):
her point guard, Thompson, whatan easy three to hit Cornwall we see
no time. She drives into thelake, had a good look but missed
it. Ball bounces off Camus.Right back on the other end, Jamison
tries to go right base side. There gets foult. She's gonna go to
the free throw, Lina, she'sfouled on the shot and Steve, you
know, as a coach and havingseen so many different teams, you see
teams that have culture built in.Every single time there's a foul called.

(37:36):
All four other players run over tothat player who might be on the ground
to pick them up. You seethe bench for Camus stands up and they're
clapping and cheering every single time. Then they sit right back down. But
just the understanding, it's the culturethat coach Scott Thompson has created with this
team. There's an expectation of doingthings the right way, and they do
a great job of that. JillianBears is gonna be called for the foul
her first. Jamison hits the firstfree throw, Now just sixteen for the

(38:01):
game. Next one goes up andit is good. Well, they needed
to get a little something going comingout of that time out. Five straight
points will certainly qualify for that Bullpup'snow looking at a seventeen point deficit with
two h six to go. Herein the third quarter, one handed passover
to the left side, Bear's gonnatry to go baseline spin move a little

(38:22):
hook shot that just falls off thefront of the iron down into the hands
of Kendall Maers for Cavas as theylook to push on the other end,
Harris Baseline gets trapped, kicks itout. They swing it around a little
bit. Reagan Jamison again goes intothe lane, dross contact sends the defender
Cornwall flying through the key, andthey're gonna call Cornwall with the block,

(38:44):
you know. And that was actuallykind of almost a deja voos all over
again, right there, Jamison goingin kind of lowering that shoulder, sitting
in the arm with this time astep of being a charge called she got
a block call in their own favor. They're gonna keep the ball out of
bounce underneath the basket. Each teamat three fouls for the quarter, so
two away from bonuses, one fortyfive to go. And if we're gonna

(39:04):
get an offensive foul called here Ididn't see where. Yeah, we're gonna
get a movie screen right there, called an addie. Harris didn't quite get
herself set trying to do a kindof America's play, getting Thompson the inbound
to come back to the corner fora three. Harris was just a little
too aggressive, moved on it.They never got set eh turnover. But
yeah, up seventeen, you canafford those turnovers once in a while.
Yeah, when you're up by seventeen, it's a little bit less of a

(39:24):
sting, right Cornwall kicks that oneover to bears left side. Three comes
off the front rim, grabbed byCornwall in the rebound paskets batted away,
however, Bears is there to grabit, goes up strong with a left
handed lamp and they're gonna get anotherbucket here and we get a timeouts called
by Gonzega preper. Are they gonnacall a full or a thirty Let's see
what they got here. Looks thatthey're gonna go a gonna be a full

(39:46):
time out. We'll take a break. Forty eight to thirty three is our
score, One to twenty six togo. Here in the third quarter,
you're listening to the w i AAGeese of Credit Union State Basketball Championships on
sports Radio nine to fifty KJR andgone Zega Prep being bounding the basketball two

(40:07):
oh five to go on the clockand they trailed by fifteen. The Camas
fans directly behind us here getting excitedright now? Is they sense that they
might be taking a state championship?Back down to the south side of the
state ball being moved around. Threeball up and good. That was Mackenzie
Prince her first basket of the game. And now it's a twelve point game

(40:28):
again, fifty three forty one andwe're at one forty to go. Here
you feel gone. Zega Prep hasdone a great job to get this score
down from the twenty two they weredown a half. It's just gonna be
too little, too late. Withonly a minute thirty two left, Jamison
slowing things down and the Bullpups notand acting like they've got any sense urgency
right there, clock down down tofour shot clock anyway, ball being bounced

(40:51):
around underhand, layup reverse good,Kira Thompson coming up with a big bucket.
Not only do you run thirty secondsoff the clock, you end up
getting two more points. Fifty fiveforty one and Olivia McIntyre's pass into the
left corner over the head of MackenziePrince turn over to the papermakers and they
are seventy seconds away from hoisting atrophy. And just with this minute ten

(41:15):
here, I mean, you seethe Bullfoks are gonna summoning in here.
They're gonna get bears out of thegame to try to really increase their athleticism.
But again, what a great jobby Camus. Whether the Storm have
not had a great second half, they've only got I think fourteen points the
second half, but an incredible firsthalf allowed them to have a little bit
of a loll in the second halfand still come out with this win.

(41:37):
And McIntyre heads one over to talkto Curtain coach Jeff Aardy in there and
she is out, so the junioras they're gonna bring in another play,
and I would like to see thisplayers getting in a chance to play.
Ella Crocker, five foot four freshman'sgonna check into the ball game, as
is number twenty three Riley Largen,a five foot nine freshman. And then

(41:58):
I look and they bring in anothersoft and plage at Belle Hernandez, So
Gonzega Prep gonna try to get thesegirls of state experience, which is a
wonderful thing. There, Paul isloose on the grand cornwall, still playing
hard as she and Sam's both divingfor a loose ball at center courts.
Forty eight seconds to go, andwe should point out Scott Thompson, the
head coach, sixth year head coachfor the Papermakers, assisted by Mike Dillman,

(42:20):
John Griffin, Lisa Schneider and JustinTigner, and I think they're they're
probably pretty happy over there on thatbench right now. Well, and I'm
glad you said those assistant coach names, because it is a head coach that
is the one that gets talked tothat has all the responsibility of that.
But there's so much time and afterput in by assistant coaches to get to
the weight room, open that up, to get to the gym open up
on a Saturday, to have allthose practices on those trips. He said

(42:40):
to Joshing DC. It's important,it's great, and it is a team
culture program. Win. As they'regonna very slowly let that clock durable down
right now, we should give ashout out to Gonzega prep. Jeff already
a second year head coach. He'salready got them at a state championship game,
a very young team. We mightadd is we're down to eight on
the shot clock. Three all upin the air, throws over the top

(43:01):
of the ram, Harris right thereto grab it. She lays it in,
makes it a sixteen point game.As we're now down under the twenty
second mark, they're chanting the Ibelieve that we will win. As we're
gonna get a time out, we'llleave it right here. Jeff Ardy second
year head coach and his assistants RonHawkins, Molly Kovac, Mike Lorenz,
Jack Smally and Mike Kelsey. Andcertainly a bright future for them. Multiple

(43:24):
freshmen on the bench. They starttwo freshmen and two juniors. Yes,
certainly something to build on. Andif you think about it, Joel,
twelve months ago, right here inthis building, East was holding up the
trophy. The team that lost isCamus. They're about to hold that trophy
up. I'm sure that. I'msure that gun Zega Prep they're gonna be
telling their players we can do thesame thing next year. Absolutely, and

(43:44):
losing the state championship, it's rough. You've been there, you've done that
as so much, right, Hey, yeah, thank you. I've been
about losing st You're speaking from experiencethere, absolutely, and it's not fun.
It's difficult and so much goes intogetting to this point, but it
also spurs you on to say,we've been there, we've gotten a taste
of it, didn't get the tastewe wanted, but it makes you want

(44:06):
to come back for more. Likeyou said, Camus lost it last year,
they're back this year to win itall. Gonzagat prepped with six freshmen
on this playoff roster. Don't countthem out, absolutely not. Ball being
bounced around there. We're down toeight seconds to go right now, by
the way, brief for best. The senior back out onto the floor as
well, and we're down to twoone. SAMs bounces the ball hard against
the ground, lets it float away, and the Camas Papermakers are the four

(44:30):
eight girls state champions of twenty twentyfour. Final score fifty seven forty one.
The girls piling on each other atthe three point line, rolling on
the ground, bunch of hugs, smiling faces. They start to pull themselves
back off their ground right now.Now they're hopping up and down the fans
behind us, yelling and screaming andcheering. I have a feeling those girls

(44:52):
are gonna go celebrate with their fansin a moment here and also on the
other side of the court, welook over there and Jeff Ardi, head
coach for Gunzega Prep, giving hisgirls a little bit of advice as to
what they should be doing right nowand how they should be taking this as
now the players are going through thehandshake line, and what a time to
be a canvas paper maker. That'sgonna make that one hundred and forty seven

(45:14):
mile trip back down towards the southend of the state. That much better,
isn't it? Absolutely? And theypay Camus paperers. What an incredible
win, what incredible season for them. But you know just what you're Jeff
Arty's hellas players, hold your headhigh. You competed, you worked so
hard. The Bullpups deserve and earnthe right to be here, even though
they knocked off number two Woodenville justin the semi finals to be do it.

(45:35):
But take nothing away the Camas papereres number one team in the state
and they finished as the state champion. Y. So the Camas paper makers
starting to celebrate right at center courtright now. And this is the tough
part here too, an Up.I hate to bring it up again,
Joel, but I gotta do it. When you finish second place, third
place, fourth place, whatever itis. If you place at state,
they have you gather with your teammatesand they take a photo so they could
put that on the You know inthis that can't be an easy Photo's you

(46:00):
kind of fake the smile before thetiers starts streaming down again. Well,
third place is a great photo takeso you won your game fourth place,
the great photo take. You wonyour game second place is the hardest photo
tape because you made it to whereyou wanted to get to and you just
fell short. Is it a littlebit easier when you come in as the
eighth seed and nobody gave you achance to be here? And or is
that maybe something you'd join maybe twentyfour to forty eight hours from now and

(46:22):
further down the road. You know, I think try twenty forty eight a
little bit down the road. Yes, I agree with you there, But
you know, this team, itdoes not make it easier that they lost
and they got you know, theygot handled us a week ago. But
you see a lot of smiles outof the skuns, like a prep team.
I think they realized we're here alittle early. We knocked off some
people. Get in here. Weknew this is going to be a very

(46:42):
very very tough test for us todo and face a team that we just
saw a week ago that beat upon us. But you're seeing a lot
of smiles. There's some tiers absolutelythis Bullpups squad, but a lot of
smiles realizing hey, I would saythey exceeded their expectations this year, but
now they're fired up for next yearto come back and see if they can
make it happen. They just postfor their second place picture first facing towards
us. We've got the Camus fansbehind us. Then they had them turn

(47:05):
around where the Gunzega Prep fans are. And I'll give them credit, almost
three hundred miles away. A lotof folks up there tonight. Obviously a
lot of moms, dads, aunts, uncles and cousins, but a lot
of the folks from Spokane, supportersof the program, alums, whatnot.
They certainly made their presence known hereat the Tournament of the Lost Court,
and I'm not gonna leave them out. Their band was here at p That

(47:27):
is absolutely awesome. And to behonest, that's a school district decision to
spend the money to send your bandover, to pay that travel cost.
That's awesome. That's exactly what Ilove seeing. I love when there's a
band here. You go, studentsection, you got parents, you got
so much. It makes the statetournament, makes the state championship such a
worthwhile event. I love it herein the state of Washington. And they
finally just gave the big trophy vaultof the Camus paper Makers holding it up.

(47:50):
They are holding the trophy high nowas they're getting ready to pose for
it. We're gonna take a quickbreak when we come back. We're gonna
try to get a couple of playerinterviews and get the coach over here as
well, gonna help the Camus paperMaker celebrate this one again, their first
state championship for basketball in school history. Final score once again, fifty seven
to forty one. We're gonna takea break and be right back. You
are listening to the twenty twenty fourWIAA Geza Credit Union State Basketball Championships on

(48:15):
Sports Radio nine fifty KJR and acelebratory moment here athlete tat Comodome for the
Camas paper Makers. Not only theplayers, coaches, and the cheers squads
who are over there celebrating right nowwith the trophy, but their fan base.

(48:36):
Players leaving the court here momentarily togo over there and celebrate with their
fans. A lot of red andblack being worn over there right now.
Players are jumping up and down forjoy, having a good time. Scott
Thompson, the head coach, isdoing an interview right now over on the
TV side of things, so we'llget him home earlier. Girls start to
make their way back to the floor. Riley Sands getting to carry that trophy

(48:57):
right now. She looks like she'shaving a great time too. We're gonna
see if we maybe get Kiat Thompsonon the way by here. Let's get
it right now, Karrit Thompson asshe's actually going over there, so we'll
wait, Joe, Let's go ahead, give us some numbers right now.
What looking at the canvas side ofthings here as the girls come over it,
go ahead and give us the topscores there. Yeah. Absolutely for
the For the Canvas Papermakers, theywere led by the seventeen points of Reagan

(49:19):
Jamison, followed by the twelve pointsof Addison Harris, ten points from Riley
Sands, nine points from Kierra Thompson, five points, five points from Parker
Mahers, two points from Phylbe Buzzett, two points from Kendall Marris for a
total of fifty seven points as theywere able to win without fifty seven to
forty one win over gun Zega Prep. The gun Zega Prep Bullpops were paced

(49:40):
by the nineteen points of Aila Cornwallnine points from Gillian Bears, eight points
from Libya McIntyre, three points McKenziePrince and two points from Quinn Peterson.
Yeah, the right now on theon again the NFHS side of things,
the Thompson's both being interviewed together coachand daughter. What a special moment that's
gonna be too. Again. Youyou've had kids play sports, you know

(50:01):
what it's like when you're coaching them. Can you imagine winning a state championship
with a sounder daughter? Oh,it'd be a dream come true. Gives
me used I'm thinking about that opportunity. Well, let's see if we can
get Scott Thompson over here in justa moment, as he's got the trophy
in his hand. Here, we'lltry to wave Scott over here in a
moment. And now the print mediagrabbing him as well. Here, Maybe
we can see if we can gethim here in just a second. Let's

(50:21):
grab Addie Harris. Maybe we canget her while we're waiting here, We're
gonna get Addie on the radio herefor a moment. She is the three
time Greaters Saint Helens League Player ofthe Year, and more portly, right
now, she's a state champion Addie, congratulations. How are you feeling right
now? Pretty good? Pretty good, big smile on your face right now.

(50:44):
You came oh so close last yearto getting this crown. I've got
to think that it just gives youthat much more motivation going into the offseason.
What has it been like waiting fortwelve months to get this opportunity and
now to have that trophy going backto your place? It's awesome. We've
been waiting since like freshman year.I guess we've worked for you this.
I'm honored to be here with thesegirls, like, it's been an amazing
journey. That wouldn't trade it foranything. Now Mom, mom already has

(51:05):
the state championship, right, gottto keep up with my mother? Right?
So is it kind of nice youHas she told you about the experience
they ever kind of compare notes in? Absolutely? Yeah, She's been a
big part of like why I'm here. My parents and all my family,
they're so supportive of us in theteam. Well, very cool, and
Wei should point out too, kindof interesting. You're going to Montana State
and we mentioned to people you hadpower five options. What was it about

(51:28):
Boseman that that lured you there?Because we're watching your game on here.
You can certainly play just about anywhere, thank you. But it was about
like the culture for me, andlike not the fancy stuff, Like it's
really just fans of stuff. Andif you're not like happy, they're surrounded
by happy people with the right people, people like you, Like, you're
not gonna be happy there, AndI just felt like I'm gonna be happy
at Bozeman. Boseman's a lot likewhat campus is here, like that family

(51:50):
atmosphere that I've wanted. You hadsix points at the half, and yeah,
your team was up by twenty two. Were used to seeing you be
the leading scorer, and you're alreadysmiling big again, so I know you're
kind of enjoy this by nice tohave so many teammates who are able to
chip in and do their parts. It's not just a one person team.
Certainly, what's it been like toplay and this is a group of girls
that even play together all your lives? Right? Absolutely? Yeah, we
played I think like Riley was onmy wreck team. We've scrimmaged like Kira

(52:14):
in fourth grade, which it wasawesome, Well, very cool. Well,
hey they're cutting down the net rightnow. I'm gonna let you go
ahead and do that again. Congratulations, what a wonderful experience. Go enjoy
this one. Thanks you guys. All right, job Patty here, So
we're gonna take a break. We'llhave more when we come back. The
team is cutting down the nets. We'll try to get the coach over here,
maybe even a couple more players.Once again, the Camas Papermakers are

(52:35):
the state champions. You're listening tothe WIAA Geza Credit Union State Basketball Championships
on Sports Radio nine fifty KGr.Welcome back to the Tacoba Do. Once
again, the Camas paper Makers areyour four A girls state champions of twenty

(52:57):
twenty four, fifty seven to fortyone victory over Gonzaga Prep. The We're
gonna get some more interviews here momentarily, but they are deciding to cut down
a second net right now. Theyalready took care of the one off to
our left, cutting down the oneoff to our right. We just try
to get Scott Thompson, the headcoach, to come over here. But
you know what, he has anet to go cut. He told us
he'd come back over in a second. Is he's got those scissors in hand,
right now and he's cutting his pieceright now. That a cool experience,

(53:20):
absolutely, And you know, youcan just see, just as we
were talking earlier in the game, the culture that he's been able to create.
We're gonna ask him about that, but to be able to create in
this program, you see, it'ssuch a family oriented atmosphere, not just
because it's his daughter on the team, but you just see they play for
each other. These girls enjoy beingtogether. You heard it from Adda Harrison.
We wreck league together, we playedagainst each other. There's just a

(53:42):
togetherness they have. And one thingI didn't get a chance to bring up
on the broadcast, the little tidbitthat they gave us just before we went
on the air. I was talkingto the athletic director. All of these
kids, all of these girls grewup in the Camus school area, in
the elementary schools. Not one ofthem came from outside the area. He's
the head coach of his daughter's team, so as you can even though he's
only been the head coach for sixyears here, he's been coaching all these

(54:04):
girls since they were about in thesecond grade. That team unity's not a
bad thing to have, either,is it. No, And as you're
talking about that, having them allgrow up in the campus area and you
have people move in and move out, and that's understandable, but in the
day and age of transfer, sooften it just rose me the wrong way.
I love hearing about a team thatgrew up together, that came together
as youth kids, and then we'reable to come out win a state Tyler

(54:25):
gear. That just gives me goosebumps. I love it. I love hearing
those kinds of stories abolutely. Lookat those girls. They are running up.
They've got the net with them.Harris has two nets around her neck
right now. They're not wasting anytime. Oh, they're going over to
the board to put their name asthe champions on the WIA board. Over
here, Scott Thompson making his wayover towards us right now, the head

(54:45):
coach of the campus papermakers. Weshould, by the way, let's introduce
them appropriately. Yes, the headcoach of the state champion papermakers. How
does that sound? Coach? Oh, it's amazing, it's amazing. These
girls have worked so hard for this. They've gone through the ups, they've
gone through the downs, and whata fitting end a storybook into an amazing
basketball team. Talk a little bitabout the last twelve months. You lose

(55:07):
the state championship game to East Lake. You've already got a tough schedule as
it is. You guys went outand made it tougher. You go to
Washington, DC, you play someof the top teams from around the nation.
You go down and play that Niketournament down in Portland. You didn't
exactly take the easy road in termsof going through the gauntlet of teams.
How did that get you prepared forwhat you're celebrating right now? Yeah,

(55:27):
I mean it even came up inthe fourth quarter at one of the timeouts.
I mean, we went and challengedthese girls this year, and part
of it was just because they flatout earned it. They were so good
last year that that we got someinvites that we couldn't pass up and some
opportunities that were just really, reallyfun, and so we took them,
and we took this team on theroad. We played some some of the
best teams in the country, andyou know, we're sitting in a huddle

(55:49):
in the fourth quarter and we're like, we've done this before. This is
no sweat. You know. GonzagaPrepp made a really good run to get
back in the game, and wejust looked each other in the eyes and
said, now we're good. We'regood. We've we've done this plenty of
times, and so yeah, creditto the girls. They were absolutely outstanding.
They held their composer when the whenthe storm hit and and came home

(56:10):
with the gold ball. You know, coach, you talk about a little
bit. You have some players inhere that are other sport athletes and go
play at college in I mean forfor their other respective sports. So some
of these are maybe the second sportathletes. What does that do for your
programmer? You're able to have athletesoff the bench who are top flight athletes
and other sports. Yeah, Imean, I just can't say enough about
Parker and Kendall Mayers. I mean, they're they're absolute superstars in their sport.

(56:32):
Kendall and Parker, they were bothplayer of the Year in UH soccer
and volleyball in the fall. They'redominant. You know, they're they're they're
getting scholarships and they come out tobasketball with the mindset of what can we
do to help gosh, And theydon't need to be the stars, and
they don't they don't try to bethe stars. They just want to help
us win basketball games. You know. Uh, the story with this team

(56:52):
is they all kind of grew uptogether. They've been around each other for
a long time in a variety ofdifferent sports. Uh, they're all kind
of homegrown chemist girls, and andand and those friendships have helped make our
team really really special. When youhave girls that come on the court and
just say, hey, what canI do to help? I'll just defend,
I'll just set screens, or I'lljust you know, play my role

(57:13):
as good as I can. Andand that's why we're doing this. That's
why we're we're holding that goal ballup. At last question, I want
to get you talk about coaching yourdaughter, your point guard. You always
talking about one of the point guardbe the extension the coach on the court.
She's an extension of your bloodline rightthere. I mean, what,
how fun is it to coach yourdaughter? Yeah, I mean it's it's
it's really fun as a coach.She's she's a phenomenal point guard. She

(57:36):
sets things up for us, andshe kind of thrives passing the ball.
And we've got so many good scoreson this team that it just it's just
a perfect fit for what we're tryingto do and she's just so so special
at it. But as a dad, I mean, it's just being able
to go through all this. Imean, we lost the state title last
year, and I got to seeher go to work. I got to
see it motivate her. I gotto see, you know, kind of

(57:57):
the the ups and downs and andand how she re on into failure and
and so it was it was reallyfun. It was really fun to see
her go through this. And andI think she deserves this as much as
anybody. And and to be honest, you know, these a lot of
these girls grew up in my housebecause they're all good friends. Yeah,
and so they all kind of feellike my daughters. And I feel like
I got to see them all gothrough, you know, the the downs

(58:17):
of losing in the States title gameand coming back this year, you know,
to finish the business that was lefton the table last year. And
so I'm just happy for all ofthem. I'm proud of all of them.
You know, this is this isjust a really special team. Knowing
these girls that what you do andyou've coached some of them since they were
like the second grade from what we'vebeen told and the fact that they've all
been together for so long, Whendid you start to see that there might

(58:39):
be something special here? Was itin middle school? Was it for that?
Yeah? I think it was thefirst day of practice, the first
time I ever had them. Wewalked into a gym and I saw the
girls doing two ball dribble when theywere little kids, and I was like,
what is happening right now? TheyYeah, they've been special for since
day one. I mean you lookat this team and and they all played
softball together and they all won,you know, over and over and over.
And then they went and played balland they beat everybody. And then

(59:01):
they go play basketball and they beateverybody. I mean, this is a
very talented group. You know, they might still be able to do that.
I think they could. It's nottoo late to try out for softball.
They'd probably form a really good team. So yeah, yeah, I
mean we knew they were special fromthe get go, just because of they
were such good athletes and such hardworkers and just great kids. Final question

(59:21):
one hundred and forty seven miles awayfrom home. How do you celebrate tonight?
Oh? Man? You know, here's the funny thing after losing last
year, Like you cannot think ahead, you cannot think so I have no
idea what comes next, Like we'reprobably gonna get in the locker room,
jump around a little bit and talkand figure it out because we didn't want
to look past gun Zaga Prep.Today. Well you didn't have to.

(59:45):
You get to celebrate now, ScottThompson, congratulations again, Camas State champions
has a nice ring to it.Thank you so much. Appreciate you guys,
role makers, rolemakers in d SOCamus fifty seven to forty one victory.
We're gonna come back in just amoment and wrap things up. We'll
take one more commercial break. Hereyou are listening to the twenty twenty four
WIAA Geza Credit Union State Basketball Championshipson Sports Radio nine fifty KJR, and

(01:00:15):
welcome back once again to the TacomaDoma one more time. The Camas paper
Makers girls basketball team are the fourA Washington State champions of twenty twenty four,
fifty seven to forty one victory overGonzaga Prep. As the boys start
to warm up here, they're gettingready for the next game. It's gonna
be Radier Beach versus east Side Catholic. Mike Benton will be bringing you to

(01:00:37):
that action, So don't go toofar away, Joel. One more time.
I wanted to throw these out hereagain. We mentioned it. Multiple
sport athletes, multiple girls playing differentsports. Montana State, what school we
did mention earlier, Colorado Mesa Universityand Junction City that's where Parker Mayors is
going to play soccer at San JoseState University, Pennsylvania. Some of these

(01:01:00):
schools are going to get some prettygood at student athletes, aren't that?
And you know, I mean you, We decide Ups is getting the four
buses going there as well, andRiley Sands is probably gonna sign somewhere this
week their SAMs And it's just thething of you and I talked about this
all the time, just as friends. We mentioned but it's like any kid
who is able to go play incollege. I don't care if it's an
AID three D two D one isalways that Monica we always talk about.

(01:01:21):
But you are able to go playa sport in college. That means so
much. And I've been fortunate enoughto have a couple of my own children
go on and play at college sportsand there's nothing like it, and it's
just exciting to hear these young girlsbeing able to go. Are these young
women, I should say, beingable to go play different sports or whatever
the story to be, but takingon a state basketball title so special.
Well, Mike's gonna be broadcasting threeA games. We hit the final four

(01:01:42):
A game. So I did wantto mention this. First of all,
congratulations to Mount Sized boys basketball teamstate champions tonight as they were able to
knock off Richland. I did wantto mention the other teams that placed here
in the four eight girls category thirdplace game earlier today, Davis defeats Sumner
seventy to sixty seven, and thenin the fourth place, sixth place game,
battle of a couple of King Godteams into each other. Very well,

(01:02:05):
wouldn't Bill knocking off Boffel seventy eightto seventy And You've been a part
of multiple so Homemuch teams that haveput trophies in trophy cases. Anytime you
can come to the dome and walkedaway with a piece of hardware, it's
a nice feeling. This absolutely thegoal from day one is to be able
to play on the last day ofthe state basketball season, which is today,
and so if you're able to beplaying in it, that means you're
coming home with a trophy, andthat is a feeling that, yes,

(01:02:28):
you'd love it to be number one, that big gold ball like Camus just
walked off with. But any trophy. Once you said that forty eight hours
away, seventy two hours once ifit's past, he started to realize that's
a special team, that's a specialgroup. You can never take that trophy
away from the regardless of what itis. One through six. Congratulations to
all those four eight girls team youjust mentioned for putting some trophies in their
trophy cases. And god Zega Preppby the way, twenty fourteen, twenty

(01:02:50):
fifteen back to backstate titles. Thatwas Mike Hardi. Jeff Party the head
coach now taking over for his dadand only a second year, he's got
a good chance to put one ofthose in his trophy cases. They'll be
back, Yeah, absolutely, Iexpect them to be back here now again.
Making the state championship game is difficultno matter how good you are.
Winning is even more tough. Butdo not sleep on those bullpups. Day
are talented and they're young. Wewill see I see Mike Benton starting to

(01:03:14):
work his way over here right now, so we will go ahead and wrap
things up. Duel Boyer, alwaysa pleasure. Thank you for joining me
on the broadcast. Shit. Thanks, He's always fun when you could call
a state championship game and watch everybodycelebrating around us, and the Camus paper
Makers, they are having themselves agreat time right now. I'm sure that
locker room is full of elation andenjoying. Absolutely. It's gonna be a
fun bust ride, isn't it.You bet so? The Camas Papermakers winning

(01:03:36):
the state championship again defeating the GonzagaPrep Bullpups. Final score fifty seven forty
one, and we will wrap thingsup right here. But again, do
not go anywhere. We've gotten notone, but two more state championship basketball
