Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, let's catch up man.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
First of all, how was the vacate I followed you
and your wife on Instagram and ye, my man's unplugging, dude.

Speaker 3 (00:08):
Well, halfway, like, we had all three kids down there,
my cousin, my grandma, my mom.

Speaker 4 (00:15):
My two nephews.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
It was vacation was a that's a soft term, that's
a I get that.

Speaker 4 (00:23):
It's a trip. It's a trip, but it's fun.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Well we got first of.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
All, your mother needs to know that if you're bringing her,
it's because she's the sole purposes to watch the children,
not enjoy herself.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
I know, Okay, And.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
That was what that was kind of the problem was like,
which is why we ended up bringing another babysitter down
to ours. Like, look, I need three days to sit
on a beach and just have it out with a
biolet tequila, you know, just figure you know, just figure
some things out.

Speaker 4 (00:52):
So you watch the kiddos.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
I'll check back in to show that I'm still alive,
and then we'll meet up for dinner.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
You and your wife definitely set up parameters on what
vacations with y'all are like, because what was it like
if she wasn't Like if you don't drink.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
Margarita's on vacation. You can't vac case with.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
Us like she is. She is very much. I mean,
let's just say the high noons started cracking before.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Noon many days, let's many days, like early enough to
be with scrambled eggs. Are we just talking like shortly
after that?

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Let's just say, if you were late to breakfast, you
could have.

Speaker 4 (01:34):
You could have you could have caught on.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
So man, yeah, let's say the eggs were cold.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
But yes, somewhere there.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
You go, I feel that. Hey, so we got a
new song. That's the whole reason we're catching up with
you today. Uh is it tough? Obviously? I can see
the the promotion coming up behind this. You just shared
a little bit of a sample of it on social media.
Have you been sitting on this song a little or
were you able to be like cool, it's done, like
let's run not the door?

Speaker 4 (02:03):
We uh? We just this one just got written.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
I guess it was two months ago and just recorded
like last month, so it was pretty quick.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
We've been looking actually for I mean got Lee.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
I've been you know, kind of having the next single
talk for a little bit now, uh, and been writing
a lot for it. You know, knew what I wanted
to do and kind of the feel and the sound
that I wanted, which I think you can kind of
you know, kind of going back into the almost maybes,
uh take it from me world spinds, you know, kind

(02:40):
of up feel. And what's crazy is we went to
Montana to write for this next single and Travis Emily
Steven Mark wrote this.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
I wasn't in the room.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
They came in played it for me and I was like, dude,
that's amazing, and they were like, yeah, change up whatever
you want. I was like, that thing's done, Like this
song is over. And you know, after listening to a
few songs, we decided this was a single.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Hey, knowing how tough it can be. I mean, I'm
sure it's like someone who's building a house. You know
what color am I gonna paint it?

Speaker 1 (03:15):
Type deal?

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Right, whenever a song is brought to you, how refreshing
is to be like, damn, that thing's done, put a
ball on and let's send it out.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
After three months of like you know, looking for it
and writing and you know, living with it for a
week and being like, ah, this is this doesn't feel right,
it was pretty it was pretty refreshing, you know, and
too like I haven't I think with a busy, torn schedule,

(03:44):
you know, family stuff, like I haven't been able to
write as much as I have in the past. And man,
I'm so grateful to be in a place with so
many great songwriters that sit down and write a song
that they think you would write. And that's a thing
is I told all of them, I was like, guys,
this sounds like I wrote this song, Like this is
a song that.

Speaker 4 (04:03):
I would have I would have written.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
And man, I'm grateful to all four writers on this
one for for writing and sending in my way.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
When it comes to that process like getting the song
out there and everything.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
It's I feel like.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
And quality wasn't sacrifice, but I feel like you've almost
had to rush through it from singles you up to
Tucson too late, because this is this might be the
longest we've gone in between singles for you, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Yeah, it's been it's been Uh it's been Guy Lee, Yeah,
since Tucson, which was I don't know how long, but
it's definitely been the biggest which I knew that we
were gonna move on from Bluebird days we weren't gonna
single another one off of that record, so it was
gonna come off on the next album, and you know,
I think I I didn't write a ton over over

(04:52):
the holidays, and then we picked up went to Europe
in February, so I kind of just found myself in
a spot where I was like, dang, I haven't been
you know, I've written seven songs in three months, and
those didn't feel right. Not saying that they're not going
to make the record, but they weren't what I wanted
to go with right now, you know, and too like

(05:13):
where we're at the touring schedule, it's summer and we're
playing outdoor amphitheater shows. You know, another another song like
next Thing.

Speaker 4 (05:23):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
I don't think it made the show any better. And
I've never really had to view releasing music.

Speaker 4 (05:28):
In that sense.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
So it's been cool to to kind of have that new,
that new angle of looking at like what what we
need from a show standpoint as far as you know,
compared to the music we're releasing.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
You said, so we got the song early.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
It's called I ain't saying and you said that you
you didn't use the word struggle but you were trying
to find the next lane, right, whether you were writing,
you were part of the writer. People were bringing songs in.
What was so right about this that you're like finally yeah.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
What's funny is when Travis brought the idea up to
me at the beginning of the retreat, I was like, hey, man,
I'm gonna read all I'm gonna spit off some ideas
for you that, you know, we can write throughout the week.
Let me know which ones to kind of keep and
which ones to trash. And he came up with this
idea and he's like, man, I got this idea. I
ain't saying you know, it's it's basically, you know guy,

(06:26):
you know in a relationship and the guy's not right
for you. Don't have a better option, but you just
know he's not right. And I think that's kind of
hit with me. Me and Christen had a dear friend
that was in a relationship that we both thought was
the guy wasn't it, you know, And we really didn't
know how to say that other than you know, I

(06:47):
don't know who is it, but it's just not him.
Uh So that one kind of connected with me and
I told him I was like, man, I think that
that one's killer.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
Let's write it this week.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
They ended up writing it that day and and I
think I just kind of connected with it in that
sense of, you know, I feel like that's where I've
been at with some some buddies here recently.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
And it's so good because the word play is when
I heard the title and then heard the song, It's
like because when you hear the title, you think you
know what the song is going to sound like, right,
and it's almost like wordplay versus what I thought the
title would bring it to. And listening back to it
and from where you sit, it almost feels like singles
you up two point oh?

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Right, Yeah, somebody actually said that, They're like, this is
like kind of singles you up the next chapter of it.
But yeah, I mean, I guess maybe because I've it's
been so long since i've since I don't even know when.

Speaker 4 (07:42):
I guess twenty seventeen, But yeah, I like and two.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
You know, for me, it took me playing that for
actually playing it for my brother, and Jacob was like,
is like, singles you up two point oh? That was
the first time it kind of clicked with me. But
I guess mainly because of where I kind of initially
took the first time Travis brought it up. But yeah,
it is is definitely in that in that vein.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
So good man.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
So you were talking about writing moving forward, obviously this
is the first handshake from an entire new project that
is coming right.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Yeah, yeah, we definitely uh, and this won't be the
only song we released this year. We've got a couple
other songs that we're we're really excited about. Uh, you know,
hopefully a new record by the end of the year.
It will probably end up being, you know, just due
to the touring schedule and trying to find time to
get in the studio. Uh, probably be early next year,

(08:42):
but who knows, we could we could wrap it up
and get this thing out by the end of the year,
So we'll see. But yes, his first song off off
a new record.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Let's go, dude, I know you're a busy guy. I'm
unless you I'm unless you roll, but holler at me
sometime and let's catch up. We'll do buddy, thank you man,
good to talk to you.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
Appreciate your best life.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
Other but he would do sign ze Ba

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
