This is iHeartRadio's West Michigan Weekend. West Michigan Weekend is

a wide range of public policy issues, as well as
news and current events. Now here's your host, Phil Tower.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
It's West Michigan Weekend from iHeartRadio and I'm Phil Tower.
Once again, thank you so much for tuning in love
having you join us across whatever iHeartRadio station you're listening to.
And of course we're a podcast as well. You can
get us after you hear us on the radio any
of our nearly five hundred episodes at woodradio dot com.
We've got big news in this segment. Exciting news. We're
(00:38):
going to talk ice fishing. Yes, because the West Michigan
Sports Commission recently announced some very exciting news, the selection
of the World Ice Fishing Championship happening right here in
West Michigan. It'll happen February eleventh to sixteenth, and happen
a little bit north of Grand Rapids. I know this
(01:00):
because I'm from this area, but we'll tell you about it.
I'm very pleased to welcome Mike McNett, freshwater Fishing director
at USA Angling Hey, Mike, thanks for catching up with us.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Good morning, Phil. Thank you well.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
I appreciate this, and I know you're on the road
a lot. Let's establish for our listeners a little bit
about US angling or is it USA Angling? I want
to get that right. Your nonprofit group. Are you all
about freshwater fishing in general or are you focus on
ice fishing? Talk to us about that.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Yeah, the United States Angling Confederation US Angling basically is
the confederation that oversees the freshwater and saltwater and fly fishing.
So we have several teams in the freshwater that I direct.
I think seventeen or eighteen teams all in total now,
including the fly fishing teams and the salt teams. And yeah, basically,
(01:58):
it's the nonprofit group helps all the individual sports commissions
that we have get the best anglers in the United
States for the world championship.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Interesting question, how does one get good enough as someone
who fishes to make it onto an ice fishing or
a freshwater fishing team, whether it's bass fishing or any
kind of sport fishing. How do you know you're qualified
or at least you might be good enough to make
a team.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Yeah, that's a great question. You know, in the vast world,
it's pretty simple. For us. We just take the top
pro anglers kayak. I know there are several different leagues
across the United States and they have a national Championship
and the ice side. It's a little different because the
(02:47):
style of fishing in the World Championship is very unlike
what we're doing here. Typically we're looking for the largest
fish and trying to catch those big fish. In the
World Championship, it's more of a speed of it. And
that's one of the reasons that we chose Lakeview is
because Lake Tavarack has a lot of small fish. Uh
(03:12):
and in a three hour period. It's really about you're
kind of a machine really when you When the spectators
come out to watch this, I will guarantee they have
never seen anything like it. We have four or five
different locations in the in the year in different tournaments.
The naif C used to be one of the big ones,
(03:32):
but the style of fishing in the United States again
is unlikeness. So it takes people just to come out
and see and decide whether they want to learn the
style of fishing. And then of course, the the the
guys that we have on Team USA invite them in
for the Nationals, and that's usually when they get that
(03:53):
first look at it to see if they want to
train and and do this style of fishing.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
By the way, we're speaking with Mike us Angling as
we're talking about the World Ice Fishing Championship coming to
West Michigan specifically. And you should know, Mike, I grew
up in Greenville, which is just south of Lakeview, so
I know been to Lakeview many times. I know Tamarack
Lake or Lake Tamarack Big Lake. This is truly a
(04:19):
world event, and I think that might surprise our listeners.
But you've got people coming in nations competing from Finland, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mongolia, Norway, Poland,
Sweden and USA. And you had mentioned earlier you like
Tamarack Lake in Lakeview because it's got a lot of
(04:40):
different species. And this will be once the augurs are down,
the holes are ready to go, they're going to drop
their tip ups. Are they using tip ups, by the way.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
What do they use? No, definitely not. These guys are
using what we call more mischiga or very small jigs,
and it's live bait only. So no, plastics. So these
guys will be using I don't know, probably one point
six millimeter line, so pound and a half two pound
line on these very small palm rods, and they basically
(05:14):
will handline the fish in after it's hooked and put
it in a bucket of water because it's a no
kill event, and then they'll be able to pull that
line and that palm rod, back drop the palm rod
into their hand, and they'll be fishing exactly in the
same spot as I said, it will be. For people
(05:36):
who've ever seen it before, they'll think it's extremely unique.
I can only say that.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Yeah, and you said it's live bait, no plastics, you know,
no rubber jigs or anything like that. What kind of
live bait I'm assuming you can get worms still in February,
But what kind of live bait do they use?
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Yeah, and we have fortunate enough to have canutes slide bait.
They're supplying all the bait for the event, and the
guys are going to be using mostly maggots because the
fish are small, but they're welcome to use, you know,
any other of the baits that are available.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Okay, is there an advantage for the world iced Fishing Championship.
This is going to happen on the fifteenth and sixteenth.
Is there an advantage you got a lot of different
species of fish in a lake like Tamarack Lake, perch, crappie, bluegill, sunfish.
Is there an advantage from one fish over the other.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Well, the secrets out after the World Championship we had
in twy ten, in twenty thirteen in Wisconsin that the
croppies are fish, you know that aren't out of the
bottom with the bluegills. So it gave us a little
bit of a head start on the teams. But now
basically they will work the jig from the top of
(06:53):
the water column down until they find where that fish is.
Just a little secret. One of the species is a
little bit heavier than the other if you look at
them and they're the same size. So we'll be you know,
we'll be targeting one of the species more than we
will the others. We'll just have to let the other
countries figure.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
That out, okay. And this is it's important to note.
This is a spectator sport. People can drive up from
Grand Rapids anywhere, run West Michigan or anywhere, run the
state and watch from the shores of Tamarack Lake in
Lakeview and watch the competitions. Any recommendations on that, when
people should arrive and when the fishing starts.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Yeah, absolutely, there's a lot of buzz in Lakeview there. Friday,
after the final pre fishing, we're going to have an
event from at least two thirty to four to thirty
kind of a meet and greet, a little parade in town,
and then Saturday and Sunday. It sounds like it's going
to be a party. Like everybody. There are houses on
(07:57):
the shore that are going to have bonfire, but people
are welcome to come out onto the ice. If you
can imagine a football field broken up into five different zones,
We'll have one angler from each country competing against each
other in those zones, and the spectators can walk around
this football field and they can view it from ten
(08:21):
feet away, So there's no need to stay on the
shore or come on out and you know, join the fun.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
What kind of prizes? By the way, we're speaking with
Mike McNett. He is freshwater fishing director at US Angling,
and you can learn more. They have a great website
us angling dot org, us angling dot o RG. What
kind of prizes for the winning teams.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
So this is basically the Olympics of fishing. Bill It's
these guys are not fishing for money, they're fishing for
pride of their country. And there's a gold, silver, and
bronze medal for the individuals and their trophies for the
top three teams as well.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
That is really cool. This has been happening, this World
Ice Fishing Championship. This is not something new. You referenced
ten two thousand and thirteen, I think it was, But
you've been doing this. This is the twenty first year
since two thousand and four, is that right?
Speaker 3 (09:19):
That's correct. We got involved, I believe in two thousand
and nine we compete in Poland and it was a
new experience for us. Of course, we took dead last
and hosted in twenty ten. I think we're the first
team to ever come back from last to first and
took the gold medal then and ever since then we've
(09:41):
we've had difficulty competing in the other countries because we
fly there, we get minimum free fishing time and a
lot of the other countries have been on the waterways.
Last year in Mongolio, we managed their first overseas medal
and it was silver, and we're not I've given anything back.
We're looking for gold in this event.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
This is interesting. I did not realize that ice fishing
wasn't an Olympic sport as recently as nineteen hundred, so
it's been it's been gone for a while, but your
ultimate goal is to get it back as an Olympic competition,
right one percent.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
And that's why this year, you know, all the other
disciplines in fishing is the no kill and with ice fishing,
it's always been something that has been difficult for us
because you keep all the fish. And that's why we're
doing a no kill event in Tamarack Lake. We're going
to have each of the angles is going to have
(10:41):
a bucket. We're going to have them put the fish
in the bucket. We'll have stewards running the buckets back
to the way tent and all the fish get put
back into the water alive. And we feel like that's
the next step for the Olympic Committee when they're looking
at us as a sport, hoping that that'll get us
one step closer to them considering us as an Olympic sport.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
It's really exciting. Mike McNett with us on iHeartRadio's West
Michigan Weekend. Freshwater Fishing director at us angling the World
Ice Fishing Championship coming to Lakeview, Michigan. Actually the two
dates of fishing and as you heard Mike say, it's
going to be a party in Lakeview. If you want
to witness it, then you can do this as a
spectator Sunday and Saturday Saturday the fifteenth, Sunday the sixteenth
(11:30):
in beautiful Lakeview, Michigan on Tamarack Lake. Shout out to
the West Michigan Sports Commission here in Grand Rapids, our
friend Mike gus Weiler, great guy. They were instrumental in
bringing the World Ice Fishing Championships to the West Michigan area.
And I know that's meant a lot for you, Mike McNett.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
Yeah, absolutely, it's you know, it's about competition, it's about conservation,
and it's about community and the community of Grand rap Weapids.
They have been instrumental in helping us organize and get
this thing put together. So shout out to them.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Yeah, it's really exciting. You're in the Illinois area and
you've got people from your team. Where are people on
your team. Where do they all come from?
Speaker 3 (12:17):
Oh, we've got Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan. We've got a couple
of guys coming out from Utah. I think there are
seven states that are representative. And one of the cool
things that anybody who has followed us the twenty ten
gold medal team from Ryan Lander at the World Championship,
(12:37):
they're all going to be there. So if you're an
ice fisherman, haven't seen Dave Gens in a while, he'll
be there as well. We really welcome you out to
spend a good time with us.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
So do okay, let's get real, Mike do ice World
Champion ice fishers? Do you have groupies in the sport?
Speaker 3 (12:59):
You know? The groupies that we have are the are
the younger anglers who want to get involved.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
Sure.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
You know. One of the things that people don't understand
is when you do compete the first time. We like
to bring these guys along and we call them spotters,
and they're the ones that are watching the action and
communicating to the anglers. And the first time you go
overseas or compete with these guys, you're literally hooked to
the sport.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
I'll bet and this sounds like there's a lot of camaraderie,
a lot of support, a lot of teaching from the
older guys, and what a great opportunity. I'm so excited.
I don't know if you can hear it in my voice.
I think this is the coolest thing. Hats off to
US Angling and West Michigan Sports Commission for putting this together.
(13:45):
It is happening on Saturday the fifteenth, Sunday the sixteenth.
I know you've got some other pre World Ice Fishing
Championship events. And where is your host hotel?
Speaker 3 (13:55):
By the way, is the Double Tree?
Speaker 2 (13:58):
Okay? All right, So you're going to be at the
Double Tree downtown and that's a short drive up to Lakeview,
but definitely worth it. If you've never seen World champion
ice fishing, this is the place to see it. Hey,
thank you. I know you're a busy guy, Mike McNett.
I appreciate it, and most importantly, as a guy talking
to you on the radio, good luck. I hope you
(14:20):
guys really do fantastically well. I hope this is a
really great success for US Angling and we're so excited
to welcome you to Grand Rapids in West Michigan.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
Thank you, Phil, I really appreciate the time.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
Yeah, we really appreciate learning about it from you, and
US Angling is fortunate to have you. Mike McNett, freshwater
fishing director at US Angling in the World Ice Fishing
Championship coming to West Michigan again February eleventh through sixteenth.
You can learn more at us angling dot org, us
Angling dot o RG.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
