Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is iHeartRadio's West Michigan Weekend. West Michigan Weekend is
a weekly program designed to inform and enlighten on a
wide range of public policy issues, as well as news
and current events. Now here's your host, Phil Tower.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
It's West Michigan Weekend from iHeartRadio. Thank you so much
for tuning in across whatever iHeartRadio station you are listening to,
and you may be hearing us as a podcast as well.
Remember we have over five hundred episodes of this program
available at woodradio dot com in our podcast section. Well,
I'm excited, listen. Let's just can I just lay it
(00:37):
out there. I get to do fun stuff as a
part of this program West Michigan Weekend, and we're calling
it Northwestern Michigan Weekend for this episode. As we are
in studio. It's always fun to be in studio with people.
And I have Whitney Wara with us chief operating officer
for Trevorse City Tourism, and they have cooked up something big.
(00:58):
Just walk over to your radio or feed in your car.
Carefully hit the volume up button because you're gonna want
to know about this. I guess twenty get through twenty
fourth the first ever Traverse City Food and Wine event,
a five day farm to a table celebration. How can
that not be a celebration? Whitney Wara, Welcome to the program.
I'm glad you're here.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Thanks so much for having me.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
So this is pretty exciting, and you know, there's it's
not like you don't have a wonderful summer already happening
in Trevorse City. So you guys sat around the brain
trust of Traverse City Tourism and said, we need to
cook up this amazing event. Tell us the real quickly,
the backstory and how this came to be.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Yeah. Absolutely, Well, we sat with our winery and restaurant
friends and a lot of different partners and ask, you know,
what's the right thing to do here in terms of
really highlighting our agricultural scene, our agritourism scene, the amazing
fifty over fifty wineries on the Travers Wine coast, and
the culinary adventures and explorations that have been happening in
(01:57):
the area for quite a while. And everybody they kind
of came together and said, yes, we want to do this,
Yes we want to do this at the peak of
summer harvest. It's a beautiful time to be there. It's
the perfect end cap to here summer, really, and we're
going to have about over seventy events now participately. You know,
we've got all different businesses offering to host these events
(02:18):
and they're creating their own unique offerings to include in
the run up, and it's.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Going to be in a number of different venues. But
this is it's really an event to celebrate wine is
really what it comes down to. There will be food
as part of many of the events, but you're bringing
in some big guns. Food Network star Tyler Florence will
be in Traverse City. He actually worked at the Grand
Traverse Resort and SPA. A well prepared press release told me,
(02:46):
I never knew that. That's really cool.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
Yeah, little no. I didn't know either until we started
talking about that.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
So Tyler for our listeners on the radio, if you
don't know already, you probably do. He hosts a great
food truck race and food court war. He's also a
mentor for home Cooks, which I love. I wish I
could hire him amas America's Best cook. He is going
to demonstrate his favorite grilling techniques and side dishes Friday afternoon,
(03:12):
followed by a multi course wine Oh my goodness, a
multi course wine pairing dinner at Grand Trever's Resort and
Spa at Friday night. So I mean that's available. Everything,
by the way, is at Trevor Cityfood and Wine dot com.
Everything you and I are talking about. So as people
are unpacking this, this is less than three weeks away.
As we're talking on the radio this Sunday morning, August's heard.
(03:36):
What should they know? Obviously they want to get tickets early.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Right, Absolutely, a lot of our events have already sold out.
The fun part is we have all different sizes and
scales of events, and so this is really a curate
your own adventure of how you want to spend your
five days. If you can spend five or if you
can only come up for one or two, you know,
there's still plenty to do and great opportunities. But again
a lot of those tickets are starting to sell out,
(04:00):
and so we want to encourage people to get their
tickets in advance and make sure that they are able
to tap into those events that they're so excited about.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
And the big tasting you said is on the twenty third,
but there are other events as well. It kicks off
on Wednesday, the twenty twentieth. You've got things happening through
the twenty fourth, and there are different ticket levels for
the tasting as well.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Right, the Grand Tasting is really designed so people can
enjoy it at a couple of different levels. It's set
it from noon to four. That's the VIP or Early
Access experience, and if you're going to get a great
general admission, that's going to start at one o'clock and
so you still have three great hours. You know, over
one hundred wines, beer, cider, all kinds of non alcoholic
offerings of like from our local purveyors, and we also
(04:49):
have wonderful local restaurants and other food purveyors providing great
little tastes. And then those guest chefs that are going
to be up on stage doing demonstrations the whole whole day,
and you'll be able to taste those demonstrated foods as well.
So we'll have recipe cards for people, but it's really
a chance to meet and greet with some of those
chefs and to be able to really taste Traverse City
(05:12):
all in one place.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
You know, this is not just Traverse City trying to
blow their own horn. I mean, let me just lay
something on you here for a moment. Food and Wine Magazine,
which is kind of a big deal, recognized Traverse City,
Michigan as one of the best small US cities for
food and drink. I think a lot of us already
knew that, and they came into town were obviously blown away.
(05:36):
But the fact you're featuring Whitney Warrow over one hundred
locally produced wines, and I stopped at locally these are
not from a round Michigan.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
These are all in the region.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Yeah, we're trying to make sure not only on the
wine and all of our other craft beverage side, but
on the food side too, that we can feature as
much local to the Grand Traverse region really are kind
of four counties up there as we possibly can the
food as well. We're really trying to stay as hyper
local as we can.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
And really, the other cool thing about this, beyond the
wine the small plates that will be available at some
of the events, including the grand Tasting Saturday afternoon, is
the banter and conversation with some real rock stars in
the world of food, the Food and Network. You've got
Amy Smart and Carter ooster House, and I mean that's
(06:25):
going to be fun enough. You brought up some big
guns in You've got the National Writers Series featuring some
cooks and authors. Why was that important for you guys
for this big event?
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Absolutely? I think one of the things I would I
would highlight is that this event has been all about
partnerships and neat collaborations, right, Having these guest chefs come in,
a lot of them have ties to the Travers City area.
They have great food and family memories from the Travers
City area too, which is fun. So they're going to
be playing on all of those different things as well
(06:58):
as their culinary personality to showcase what they think is
going to be best for us to be able to
enjoy at that peak of summer. And you know, those
those collaborations with Writers Series, you know, they've been a
great partner and help us be able to showcase the
chefs that are coming in in a slightly different light.
You know, those folks know how to cook. They can
(07:19):
certainly get on stage and demo food, but what about
their backstory? What about you know, what's inspiring them, what's
making them want to continue to evolve their culinary thinking.
And it's just a really fun collaboration to be working
with them on these things.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
And like you said, there are a lot of these
with local connections. May Lynn is a Top Chef winner
and Food Network star and dearborn native and a dearborn
native James Beard or nominee, which is a big deal.
Sarah Welch and Cameron Rolka who open too highly acclaimed restaurants.
If you're from the Detroit area, We're going to Detroitmorrow
(07:57):
and Mink.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
You can check that out.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
And then and Anthony Perowski, a New York Times bestselling
author for his cookbook Looks Do Dinner, also host of
the new national geographic TV series No Taste Like Home.
This is really a cool show, and he will be
featured as a part of the National.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
Writers Series in Trevor City.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
There's going to have a panel of chefs from Top Chef,
Iron Chef, Chopped and more that will be really cool
as well.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
And that is a separate ticketed event.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Right absolutely, And they're going to give you that sort
of behind the scenes look of what does it really
like to be on these food competition shows and is
it as cutthroat as it seems or do they all
really get along?
Speaker 2 (08:41):
I want to plug your We're speaking, by the way,
with Whitney Wara, chief operating officer at Trevor's City Tourism.
Trevor's City Tourism is important. You'll want to know that
you can also get there at Trevor Cityfood and Wine
dot com. Everything for Trevor's Cityfood and Wine. The big
event that we are talking about, I guess twenty through
twenty fourth is that that festival site Trevor Cityfood.
Speaker 4 (09:04):
And Wine dot com. But let's talk about lodging.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
A lot of people as were about three weeks away,
a little under three weeks away, probably wondering can I
get lodging? What about camping? A lot of campers listen
to this program. What would you recommend? Because I know
you've got some websites to help with that.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Absolutely well, we do have lodging links available on the
Traverse Cityfood and Wine site, but you can always go
to Travercity dot com to plan any of your trips
up north. We've got all kinds of great variety of
lodging offerings and yeah, there's everything in there, from the
more camping oriented crowds to a great house on the
(09:43):
lake to a wonderful hotel, and we've got a lot
of new properties in the Traver City market in the
last year, so we have plenty of room for everybody
to come on up.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Yeah, I noticed that that last time I was there.
You're building to make sure there are enough beds for
people to sleep in, which is wonderful, and the city
is just a wonderful place to be in northern Michigan
in the summertime. You can again learn more at the
website Traverse City Tourism Wait Trever City dot com. Traversity
(10:16):
dot com is the Traverse City Tourism site, and then
for Traverse Cityfood and Wine, that website is Traverse Cityfood
and Wine dot com. There'll be a quiz at the
end of this conversation with all of these websites where
you could just email Whitney and say, remind me what
those are again? What else should people know? As we're
less than three weeks away, and I also want to
(10:40):
tease the fact that fall is coming up, so you'll
want to visit Trevor City Tourism for planning your fall
wine trips and more as well. But what else should
people know about this event? You can come for just
a day if you want, or a couple of days right.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
Absolutely, Again, this is a choose your own adventure. We
wanted to make sure that it was customizable for people
with all different interests in backgrounds, so you can get
out on the bay. We have several beautiful sales on
the wind Dancer, on the Naughty Cat, and on the Manitu.
There's a brunch aboard the Manitou in fact, which is
a really cool one. We've also got events in town
(11:15):
as well as out of town, so you can go
up Old Mission Peninsula and leland A Peninsula and really
get out into the heart of wine country and get
these very hands on personalized tours with maybe with the
winemaker or with some expert staff. And there's also a
lot of really fun photo opps, so we're going to
have beautiful sunset parties the rooftop of Hotel Indigo. Chef
(11:37):
Omaranani from Detroit's Saffron Dtois he's going to be doing
a catered meal up there along with a DJ, so
that's going to be a really fun one. On Sunday night,
we have Chef Maln's sort of brand finale dinner, so
it's really worth coming at the very beginning, it's staying
all the way till the end. But you can absolutely
(11:58):
come for a day or a couple of days and
make your experience your own.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
And one other thing, we have a lot of listeners
on this program out of state, and I want to
put a plug in for a wonderful airport in the region,
of course, the Trever City Airport.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
That's TVC.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
If you're booking your flight, NonStop flights to twenty city,
so it's really easy to fly in. And if you
do have private aircraft, my wife and I would love
to hitch a ride with you. I'm just throwing that
out there on the radio. But don't forget the airport
is a great way to get in and out of
Traverse City. Anything else before we wrap up Whitney Warra.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
Well, we just hope to see you guys up there,
and it's going to be a wonderful week and we
can't wait to celebrate with you.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
And if you can't make Traverse City food and wine
the celebration in late August, and you're planning to come
up in the fall, now's the time to visit Trevorcity
dot com and get booked.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Get that planned right, absolutely you know, October is one
of our busiest times of year, and those are definitely
hotel rooms you want to book in advance because the
colors are gorgeous, the food is amazing. Again, we're looking
at a deeper harvest season, but it's just one of
the most beautiful times of year.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
So is January and February, and really any months if
you were if you really want to just go up
there when it's a little easier, a little more accessible,
I highly recommend January, February, even you know, late November. Wow,
this is a pretty great time to be in Traverse City, Michigan.
And again, everything you need to know about Traverse Cityfood
(13:32):
and Wine is at Travercityfood and.
Speaker 4 (13:35):
Wine dot com. I love how they made that so easy.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Whitney war a chief operating officer with Travers City Tourism.
They are the wonderful team that created this magical event.
Thank you so much for being in studio with us.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
Well, thanks for the chance to talk about it.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
Lots of fun awaits.
Speaker 1 (13:52):
You've been listening to iHeartRadio's West Michigan Weekend. West Michigan
Weekend is a production of Wood Radio and iHeartRadio. Oh
mhm
