Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is iHeartRadio's West Michigan Weekend. West Michigan Weekend is
a weekly programmed designed to inform and enlightened on a
wide range of public policy issues, as well as news
and current events. Now here's your host, Phil Tower.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is iHeartRadio's West Michigan Weekend and we are on
location for this segment inside Help Pregnancy Aid on the
west side of Grand Rapids to tell the story of
an amazing organization. You should know about them. If you
don't know about them, Paula Vna Claus will tell you
everything you need to know by the end of this conversation.
(00:37):
Paula Venaclaus is the executive director of Help Pregnancy Aid.
We are sitting inside a beautiful conference room which has
really this whole place is transformed, and I've watched this
transformable over the last several years. First of all, Paula,
thank you for joining me.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Oh, thank you for having me the pleasure to be here.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Well, it's it's really great to have you and I've
wanted to learn more about what you are doing here
because this place has transformed, like a lot of Bridge
Street over the last several years. So, paul you've been
with help for calling in thirteen years to do.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Yeah, it'll be thirteen years in February.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Okay. How long has this organization been here in Grand Rapids.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Well, it's been here for fifty two years now, so
most of the time landing here on Bridge Street.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Okay. And recently the building went underwent a major change
at a major addition. You have a beautiful garden in
front of your building. But I'm going to guess the
reason that Help Pregnancy Aid expanded was because of the demand.
(01:51):
You have a lot of people that utilize your services
here at Help Pregnancy Aid. Let's talk a little bit
about that. You are executive director. What did you do
when you first came here?
Speaker 3 (02:02):
By the way, what did I do? I was actually
in the retail business. I worked in grocery family fair, Yes,
in Grantville. So, but fifty two years ago. Judy Brown
was our original founder and she actually seen a need
in the community. Working with God's Kitchen kind of was
you know, part of that. And she actually would see
(02:24):
pregnant women out in the streets of Grand Rapids and
she started by bringing them into her home and that
turned into a ministry that landed at eight o seven
Bridge Street, originally a little house a couple of blocks
to the west, and in two thousand and two we
landed here at the corner of Cadwell and Bridge and
in a little building that used to be a post office,
(02:46):
it used to be a bank, it used to be
the car auto parts place. So and then again, expanding
our services over the years caused us to fill up
all the rooms in that little building, which you know,
it violated some confidentiality and some of the programming that
(03:09):
we did, and we really feel felt a need to
expand to meet all the needs because as our programs expanded,
so did the need for two separate spaces, one that
helped with the women's health part of what we did
and one with the resources side. So now we have
(03:30):
two different wings per se to accommodate all the programming.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
That we do, and helped school is to promote the
healthy development of babies from conception to age three, and.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
Helped the women walk alongside the women too, right, And
I want to talk about that for a moment, because
these women come to many of them kind of in.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
A crisis, Paul. They maybe some of them have been
out of their homes, some of them may be unhoused
or really unsure what they're supposed to do, unsure if
they are meant to be pregnant, and all just one
hundred questions. How do these women encounter you at Help
(04:16):
Pregnancy Aid and let's just kind of walk through this journey.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Well, they encounter us as a place of care and compassion,
a place where they can make a plan moving forward.
If they find themselves in an unexpected pregnancy, they'll find
a place where they can confirm their pregnancy, find out
how far along they are, talk about a path forward
(04:39):
and what that might look like. You know, we offer
the free pregnancy test. We offer an altersound limited altersound
that will confirm that it's a healthy pregnancy, that there's
no complications, there might not you know, there's no topic.
You know, so those kind of things are necessary to
(05:03):
making a plan forward to parenting or whatever that plan
might be.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
And these women come to the word of mouth referrals
through church communities. How do they generally hear about Help Pregnancy, Well.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
They might find us online. Word of mouth is still
the biggest way people find us. It's because of the
care and compassion and that are shown to the women.
Is why you know, the word of mouth is so
you know, one of the still the the way people
(05:38):
find out about us. So that's we have a good
reputation of taking good care of the people that come.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
And you walk alongside these mothers as they're going through
their pregnancy and then after birth after they have their
child or children, depending on how many children they are,
having your support system for them as well too, because
it doesn't stop just at birth. I mean, the new
moms need lots of things, don't they, especially education they do.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
And actually the one of the lay up programs too
is everything mom would need to have. The bring the
baby home from the hospital is one of our original
programs that goes all the way back to Judy Brown
and being able to walk in when you need help,
And the educational piece is icing on the cake because
finding community, finding people that maybe have gone through what
(06:31):
you've gone through and can be a living witness to
everything's going to be okay and we can get through
this together is one of the highlights of what we do.
Just being right there to help because we know all
the resources in the community that can come alongside too,
so we don't do this alone. We partnerships and collaborations
(06:56):
with many of the services in the community that help,
especially when it comes to you know, housing homelessness. We
do run into areas where, you know, we got to
connect the ladies to some place that can be more
than just the material services that we help with, you know.
(07:18):
So it's very important to have those resources at our fingertips.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
And this is a Christian based ministry. This is it's
a very important part of Help Pregnancy AID. It's it
really Paula kind of gets down to that part of
Scripture of the phrase what you do to the least
of them and people who really need help, But it's
also about the sanctity of life for you and your
(07:44):
mission here at Help Pregnancy that's a very important thing.
You see a lot of imagery inside here that reminds
you that you're a faith based organization. Can you talk
about that and how you walk along inside these women
who may not have any faith background at all, may
not believe in any kind of spirituality, walk us through
(08:08):
that process.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
Well. The faith based part is that we don't have
to say the name of Jesus or our faith that
when they come through the care and compassion that has
offered to them, that They just see it in who
we are and representing as people. The care and compassion
and the dignity and the respect, especially with our new
(08:32):
atmosphere with our building, really does show women that we care,
and that's where that element comes. Nobody has to be
religious to come here. We serve all that come through
our door and their helps in individual ways too. We
don't set a course for the same path for each woman.
(08:57):
The woman decides how she wants to utilize our services.
We offer the programming, and she chooses do I just
want to be a walk in. I already do a
lot of appointments already. I don't have time to do
another appointment. Do I have time to do appointment once
a month and you know, have continuing care? Sure I
can do that. I love meeting the coach, the help
(09:18):
coaches we call them, and I love, you know, interacting
with them. Or if you want to be a part
of a community based program where you're getting professionals come in,
they do presentations, you get to meet somebody that might
be going through what you're going through. You're meeting as
a group of people versus one on one, or just
(09:38):
coming in when you need services. So there's they choose
how they want to use the programming.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
It's welcoming, it's affirming, it's accepting. That's pretty incredible. We're
speaking with Paula Venaclaus. She is the executive director for
Help Pregnancy AID. You want to learn more about the organization,
it's help pregnancy dot org. And you can do to
support the program if you love what they're doing here,
support help pregnancy dot org. Again, that's support support help
(10:08):
Pregnancy dot org. You have a very important event coming
up on September eighteenth. I want to talk about that
because a lot of our listeners might be interested in
attending and learning more about that. But before I do that,
you also have a walk in program, which is really important.
I mean, you have so many things going on here.
(10:28):
Trust me, if you're hearing this conversation, just go to
the website and check them out. And I just I
love the fact that people know you're here as a resource.
People walk in for formula, for diapers, for food. I
also understand you have kind of a credit based program
(10:49):
where women who are expected mothers or new mothers, they
take classes, they can earn points to get things they
need here at Help Pregnancy. Is that how that.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
Yeah, we have a Loving Arms boutique. So if they're
a part of the monthly program where they're watching an
educational informational dB there, I say DVD, I'm dating myself video. Yes,
but it's a link that gets sent to their phone
and it's called Bright Course and it has topics ranging
from childbirth to potty training to finances. It just has
(11:24):
a host scope of educational informational information. They watch that
and they come in, they meet with a help coach
and they earn the points to shop, or they're taking
a class in a class setting. Either way, they're ongoing
support building a community of sport. I like support is
what I like to say, is because you know, you
(11:48):
can be poor and not having money, but there's also
a poor in spirit. There's also a poor and I
don't have a surrounding. I don't have parents here, I
don't have a community a family to help me. So
we don't ask for any proof of income. So it's
all based on the individual need and that's the way
(12:11):
we like it.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Yeah, and that's really wonderful and it's important to recognize
that fifty two years ago when Help was started, a
lot of women hid pregnancies. It was a different attitude
back then for women, young women especially who became pregnant
in school or what have you, and attitude which have changed,
(12:33):
and having a safe, welcoming place like help pregnancy is
really a game changer. You have a dinner coming up
on September eighteenth, a fundraising dinner, a friend raising dinner,
A lot of things tell us about that in our
remaining moments.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
Well, our fall dinner is called Bold, Bright, Bold and
Bright beautiful you and we are at Notos, Old World
Italian Dining on twenty eighth Street, So you get to
enjoy a beautiful evening at Notos and it's at seven
o'clock on September eighteenth, that's a Thursday evening. Doors actually
(13:15):
open at six, So it's ninety five dollars a person
or nine hundred and fifty dollars if you want to
do a table of ten and invite your friends, like
you said friend raising. And also we take sponsorships, so
if you want to go to the website and check
out if you'd like to be a sponsor of our event,
we would love to have you sponsor us. And our
(13:38):
keynote speaker is Pam stencil. And she's actually the bright
course that I talked about for our programming for our Girls.
She's actually the development director for that's executive producer, I guess.
So she has a beautiful story to tell and she
wants to help us raise money to keep our doors open,
(14:02):
our lights on. One thing to mention too is our donation. Well,
I should say our ministry is totally community funded. We
do not take public funds. So it's it's the generosity
of the community that makes it happen. And generosity the
community that helped us expansion through a capital campaign happen.
(14:24):
We raised three point six million dollars. So come alongside
us and help us keep the momentum moving ahead. We
would love to have you aboard. Also, we have a
big volunteer pool. We can welcome over seven hundred people
through this through our doors every month, So we have
(14:45):
to have a big volunteer pool because there's only sixteen
staff that make this happen.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
I was going to say, oh, you need an army
of volunteers, dedicated volunteers, and I know you certainly have
them real quickly. To get tickets for the dinner on
September eighteenth, can they do that through your website, Paula.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
They can go to the support Helppregnancy dot org.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Okay, support helppregnancy dot org. The dinner is on September
eighteenth at Noos Old World Italian Restaurant. And this is
a great fundraiser and important fundraiser. And even if you
have never been in a situation with a crisis pregnancy,
or maybe you are not someone who has any kind
(15:29):
of a family situation like this, but you understand the
importance of the program. Here, it's a great opportunity to
pay it forward to support Help Pregnancy Aid. And again,
the website is support helppregnancy dot org. You can learn
more about their organization at help Pregnancy dot org. And
this is just a really amazing place, Paula. I have
(15:51):
about a minute left. There's anything I didn't ask you
wanted to make sure our listeners knew about Help Pregnancy.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
Well, just in from my own heart, just being here
day after day, day in and out the lives we touch.
Yesterday we were interviewing a couple of the gals that
have been touched by help that you'll actually get to
meet at the dinner. But their stories are just so
touching and I just just watching them persevere and watch
(16:25):
them with our guidance, our help, you know, to persevere
through through difficulties that it's going to be okay. It
just it touches your heart. And I'm just so blessed
to be here day in and day out to live
out this. I like to say, for me, it's a calling.
Speaker 5 (16:43):
I would say that's a good description. I think I
think you're feeling that calling very very well. Paulock Dounoclaus
is the executive director for Help Pregnancy A.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
You've been listening to Iheartradios West Michigan Weekend. West Michigan
Weekend is a production of Wood Radio and iHeartRadio
